    Join me on a two night solo canoe trip, instead of a park we're heading out on public crown land in Quebec. I venture out with my trusty dog Toby and my Warbonnet Blackbird hammock for a great weekend. In the video I cover such topics as my new Sawyer Mini water filtration system, new Mora Companion knife, fishing and lets not forget about the crazy, nasty bugs among other things. I hope you'll join me on this one...
    As promised, here's a link to my custom ferro rod holder 3D print for the Mora Companion sheath: www.thingivers...

    So back in 2011, I watched your 11 part video of Algonquin Park and a light went on for me. You've always maintained a calmness in good and rough weather and showed the beauty of true wilderness. After watching your vid, I decided I wanted to try out backcountry camping and brought my very young son along. We have been going on backcountry adventures every year ever since. I still use the knot and hitch that you had shown all those years ago. Just wanted to send my gratitude to you for making that video 8 years ago. It has eternally changed my life and my family's life for the better. Keep on keepin' on.

    I have a Rat Terrier that goes hammock camping with me. After a few times of sharing my hammock with Scout and everything he has come in contact with during the day and being subject to frequent shifting I bought a Eno singlenest for him. I sling it directly under mine and he does a pretty good job of staying put all night. Before buying his own hammock I put him on the ground below me but he always wandered around and I would have to get up several times during the night to get him cozy again.

    I had 2 hydration packs and gravity fed the mini and it was AWESOME.
    my "dirty" water bag completly opened on the end, and I put the Sawyer on the end of the hose.
    After hanging, in no time my clean water bag was overflowing

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  6 лет назад

      Nice! I have a similar system now. I designed and printer some 3d prints that connect my CNOC 2L water bladder to my bottle and let it gravity feed. So far it's my favourite water filter system yet. I'll show it in one of my future videos. I actually shot it in a video from a 3 night solo a couple of weekends ago but I don't think my video is usable due to camera issues and really poor audio. Too bad, had over 5 hours of vid on that trip.

    One time I went on a solo horseback trip into Oregon high Cascades in late spring. I got to camp destination, set up a camp for the night. My horse had thousands of mosquitos even after I emptied a can of Off on him. It was so bad I packed up and went home. I couldn't stand to watch the horse suffer and longer.

    I use the sawyer mini too, i built a basic gravity system using a sil nylon dry bag with a small hole in the bottom and a valve system , there are tonnes of videos on youtube showing this system, super fast to fill .

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  6 лет назад +1

      Awesome, I'll check that out. I'm basically using the same kind of system but with an old Katadyn gravity filter bag. The only issue being they don't sell it on its own so your system sounds much more convenient. Stay tuned, that may be my next "perfect" filter system. The mini has been great so far. Thanks a lot for the info, happy trails my friend.

    Love the videos. Been watching for years! I do have a few questions about Algonquin Park.
    I have done a 40km portage there in the past, but I am looking to do something with no portages for myself and someone who is very new to backcountry. Is there a specific entrance, and a specific lake you would recommend for this? I don't mind a short canoe trip. I just wan't a great view, not much traffic, and something easy for a noobie I am bringing with me. I am huge into nature photography, so any advice on time of the year would be great too.
    Thanks Troy! Looking forward to the next vid

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for tuning in! Yup, picked up some new gear that I'll be going over in the next few weeks/months, I'll be looking at doing more in the way of reviews so stay tuned. It's mainly in an effort to lighten up my pack and getting more efficient. I'm really liking the Gregory Z55 and it weighs in at 3lbs 7oz compared to my 8lb Arc'teryx Bora 80. It's no ultralight pack but it certainly added a spring to my step. The two packs are hard to compare since the Arc'teryx is extremely tough and a fair chunk bigger. If I ever needed a big pack that could take an absolute beating and hold a lot of weight it would be a good choice but the Z55 is floating my boat right now and so far, so good! It's a perfect size now that I'm bringing less/more compact gear.

    How's the Souris holding up? I think my Wenona has another year in it but starting to think about the "next" canoe.
    ....the hammock is such an excellent solution for solo trips. Not an option when I take one of the dogs though...Bullmastiffs.

      I couldn't be happier with my Souris River Prospector canoe. It's light, durable, comfortable and handles well. I did give both ends an extra layer of fiberglass just to be safe for those nasty rocks in the rapids but I'm not sure if I really needed it or not, just made me feel better.
      Also can't say enough good stuff about the hammocks and with a Jack Russell they're perfect but a Bullmastifff, meh... not so much haha. To be honest, one of the reasons for getting the Toby, my Jack, was because he would be such a good travel companion. He works out great in the hammock, doesn't cause issues in the canoe and is tough as nails to boot!
      Thanks for the comment and I hope you have an awesome season.

    just stumbled onto your channel and liked this adventure. I might suggest for the Sawyer filter you pick up a CNOC bag. (cnocoutdoors.com/collections/hydration/products/vecto-water-container). It fits both Sawyer filters and weighs 2.6 ounces and is 2 liters. I've got an Evernew 2L and a Hydropak 4L Seeker bag (incredibly only weighs 4.4 ounces), but am seriously considering the CNOC bag. Great trip and love Toby! Cheers! DonP

      Hey lostagain, I'm already on it and have a CNOC bag. I haven't used it on a trip yet but am designing some 3D prints to go hand and hand with the CNOC bag, Sawyer Squeeze and Mini as well as a Smartwater bottle. I should have those tested in the field in a few weeks as I have a weekend hiking trip planned. Going to be strange walking a trail without a canoe over my head but really looking forward to it... been biting at the bit! Thanks for writing and hope you have a great season!

    What do you use for you camera set up ? Do you use a external microphone ?

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  6 лет назад

      I'm currently using the Canon Vixia HF R700 camera. I don't use an external mic but have considered it. I'll be doing some reviews at home and am going through the process of finding an external directional mic for that as we speak.

    Where's Lucy dog? I thought she was the perfect dog.

      Lucy's doing well but stayed home with Maddy on this trip. I thought I'd break Toby in while he's young and being a Jack he has tons of energy and curiosity which makes him great for this sort of thing, not to mention his smaller size being ideal for the hammock.
