The GGHD I bought worked fine, it had its issues ironically on the case and wish it was designed better but there will be no other updates as our friend passed away last year
Just a tip, nothing wrong with using some flux when using desolder braid... some braids just won't cooperate without out it and some (with included flux in the braid) just don't help enough on their own.
Did you only try this kit using an Everdrive? I know the Everdrive requires a certain amount of power to operate correctly without problems. Also, with the removal of caps and using USB-C I'm curious if the Game Gear is getting the appropriate amount of V/W to power everything.
I had the same issue on my game gear it was the 5v supply these old gg need 5.5volts so you may need to mod your supply it’s a problem with aging asic’s and aging boards upping the voltage solves it not sure if the mod could take it so you might have to check with them as on a standard gg setup you can mod the power board to up it to 5.3-5.5volts
The rainbow screen issue is a common problem on Game Gears when doing LCD upgrades as well. I've seen this exact issue reported on the BennVenn discord a few times, no one seems totally know ×hy it happens. Only occurs when cycling power off/on quickly.
As someone who works extensively with HDMI professionally I would test it with more than just 6 cables. Also there might be an issue with power, try isolated the power supply on a different circuit and then on the same circuit as TV or capture to see if the issues persist, as well as test different USB-C cables. As others have mentioned as well, try using a real cart vs an everdrive. To me it seems like there's lots of variables to still look at before not recommending this unit.
Would you, as the consumer of a product, test it more then 6 times after it doesn't work? Would you completely change your setup trying to get it to work? I used multiple USB C cables and power supplies on different TVs, and as far as I'm concerned I'm using it as advertised. I'm helping them gather information and do testing, but it's not my responsibility to figure out the issues, especially with the new console that they sent me.
@@dubesinhower Fair enough. In my business (film production) I'm not able to give up on equipment when millions rely on "getting the shot". So I've learned tricks to try my best to accomplish that, if that means I try 20 different HDMI cables, sometimes that's what it takes.
@@morbitalof course lol I know it's not a Samsung phone but hell even mass produced items aren't perfect either but they should at least be functional. All I'm saying is if there are problems that major then just fix it before you release it. Either way I'm glad he's pointing out the issues so hopefully they can be resolved.
Ah, I was considering this kit since I have 2 broken Game Gears (recapped but both immediately turn off after powering on). Was hoping this kit would make them easier to repair, but guess I should hold off for now. Maybe a QSB would also be good for those handful of wires you need to solder.
Thanks for this interesting video. Gonna pass on this product even though m a big fan of SegaGG. My Mcwill mod VGA out looks really good, and I even made a GG satellite to broadcast the image over the air to my CRT TV. I also have the harness for an SMS controller so that I could play co-op SMS titles like Time Soldier with my buddy.
Wow, that's a massive bummer. I got mine in the mail a week ago, but haven't had time to install it. This sounds like it's a common issue...very disappointing. Maybe Voultar will take a look and see if these can be fixed.

Awesome install to see, appreciate the honesty with this as well.
Thanks for the comment, it's always difficult to be negative especially when you respect the mod developers!
@Dubesinhower it's not about being negative. You have to have integrity and we all respect you so very much for having it. So shout out to you!

I've had a migraine and trouble keeping food/liquid down today. this is just what i needed to lay down and watch! Thanky ou Dubes!

thanks dubes! it sounds like this mod wasn't yet ready for primetime. i hope they can fix it. it's a cool concept.

@@dubesinhower exactly it should work right out of the box especially for the price. If there are problems then the product shouldn't be released.
@@ericochoa4034 this is a hobbyist device, not a Samsung Smartphone. Expectations need to be adjusted.

That’s one hell of an install 😮
Same happen to me when I installed my second RETRO-KAI kit. So it's because of my GG pcb.
Out of curiosity, have you tried another Game Gear? I know those can be absolute nightmares at times.
Postman sent me a different game gear back (maybe I wasn’t clear in the video)

A custom flex cable/ribbon seems like a better solution than a QSB.
This mod looked cool, but the pocket plus adapter plus dock is already such a good solution, I passed.

For the cost it should be a well done product without issues. Specially needing specific hdmi cables.

Seems like there's some promising leads on Twitter in the replies of this video's post! 🤞
Yes! Hoping to make a follow up video
sounds like a unreliable mod until they get the issues sorted out.
You're using the wrong kind of chisel tip for this. It should have a flat bottom so that you can have more surface area touching the pads.
seems like he was using his just fine to me
@@Sampsonited like when he lifted that pad?
Yea I probably shouldn’t have used solder braid sideways too
@@dubesinhower that's true. I didn't even consider that.
Okay but a sms already exists, so...?
What's that have to do with the Game Gear??
@@Septer_Sever they have almost the same hardware. the Game Gear is even a little bit more powerful (a bit more RAM if I remember correctly).
it's fun to do.
Looks like grabage.
All that work for a shitty display
