Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham shows you how to play the verse of "The Boys Are Back in Town." This lesson continues at guitarworld.com - Развлечения
Gorham deserves to be in the ranks of Angus Young, Jimmy Page, and Randy Rhoads....... he and Thin Lizzy never got the credit they deserved. Fortunately, we as fans make them very near and dear to our heart!!!! long live Lizzy!!
Exactly , and how the hell are they not in the rock n roll hall of fame? They are rock n roll! the real fans know like you said!
Couldn't agree more..and Robbo!
When I was a kid it was thin lizzy ..acdc and hendrix for me ...I still measure stuff up against it....over the years I branched out to all kinds if music ...but I still come back to those three acts and get what i need ...lizzy with out a dought ...got pushed under the carpet..cos of drugs or what not...they should have been at live aid....it badly missed thin lizzy ....had Phil lived in the 90s and the 2000s he would have been massive the guy was an absolute star...we all know that..great song writer too ..shame we didn't get to see what he would have came up with
@@stevieG. I first heard Robbo when I heard him with Motörhead on Another Perfect Day. Love his playing.
ahhh nope
Scott Gorham is one is my favourite guitar players, not just because of his technique, but I met him in a guitar shop once, the nicest dude ever. I mentioned Fools Gold is my favourite Lizzy song because of his solo and we chatted for a few minutes, it's a memory I cherish. How many guitar heroes are that humble?
So many would be guitarists commenting here. Lets set the record straight. Phil Lynott was Scott Gorham's closest friend. He wasnt just a band member. They were like brothers. And Scott is extremely modest as a guitarist yet he is one of the greatest rock guitarists out there.
So when he tells the story of how Boys Are. Back In Town was written, he is just modestly explaining how it literally happened. He's not trying to steal Phil's limelight as a song writer. That would be ridiculous. Scott has never claimed to be a song writer when in Lizzy. Think of that!!
Remember too that Phil was first and foremost a bass player. So when a bass line is played on its own, like Phil would have played Boss Are Back In Town bassline to the rest of the band, how do think it would have sounded? Like some cosmic mind blowing experience perhaps? No. It was just a chuffin' bassline. And a bassline on its own often sounds pretty forgetful, if we're honest even - shock horror disbelief - this bassline of Phil's, until, as Scott said, the rest of the band add their bit. None of which detracts from the fact that the bassline and idea for tube song was unquestionably Phil's!!! And Scott was saying exactly that.
So stop being so precious about the memory of Phil. Because I tell you what, if it wasnt for his best friend in death even, Scott Gorham, then Thin Lizzy would never have been discovered by the audience who have come to know and love their music since Phil's death in '86. And why? Because as Scott has said, he never wanted his best friends music to die. He wanted Phil to be remembered as a true musical talent who died too young. And Scott has achieved that by ceaselessly banging the Lizzy drum for decades.
So before some of you spout off some garbage about Gorham trying to steal Phil's crown, etc etc, you should really take your hat off to Scott. He and Brian Downey have saved the musical legacy of Thin Lizzy and in particular the musical genius of Phil Lynott. Thanks Scott. You deserve so much more credit. Thanks for the memories.
Well put Chris Barlow.
@@turkeeg7644 You are very welcome.
chris barlow beautifully put sir🍻
Robbo was a bit cheesed the rest of the band didn't get enough credit or specifically, a share of the publishing rights. Not sure what to think, they would probably have had no where near the same level of success without Phil, yet they did contribute so much in putting the songs together.
Scott is my favorite American guitarist, Brilliant. Him and Hendrix
SCOTT IS A LEGEND!!! ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL & IMPORTANT GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME! THIN LIZZY RULES!!!!!
The chording is brilliant in this song.
Yes! Thank you very much sir!
Some of the best chords in rock'n'roll.
True.
Absolutely
Phil was a showman Thin Lizzy was amazing to watch in concert
Been a fan for many years, I’m 53 now. I didn’t start to play at guitar till I was about 36. I’m not good, but I have my own brand of fun with it, and I always admire those that can just get after it. I got no room for trash talking anyone who just tries and stays after it. God bless these real musicians!!
For metal fans Thin Lizzy is an important band because their twin lead guitar style influenced both Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.
Thanks Scott! Your the coolest. You are "the" rock guitarist of my generation we all wanted to emulate.
As I grew up I thought Scott was the coolest looking stage performer on the planet,I grew My hair just like His and learnt all His solo's..and that bit of rhythm He just demo'd was awesum.Cheers Scott for all the inspiration man !!
I have a lot of respect for Scott, he seems very humble, laid back and down to earth. The music of Thin Lizzy has influenced me in so many ways - i'm pleased he's keeping the thin lizzy memory alive and still keeping at it
Saw this cat with Thin Lizzie opening for Nazareth in Nashville late 70’s What a show both bands were stellar. Freakin great show
As a lizzy die hard,, I, m a lead guitarist of more years than I care to mention but it was Live and Dangerous that hooked me forever,, I was blown away by Brian Robinson initially, with good reason! but in later life Scott Gotham, s style is a lot harder to nail,, very rhythmic and unusual note choices, check out the funky f sharp bass note slipped into the chords of the boys are back,, so cool! Still in love with you solo 2,,The outro solo on Bad Reputation,, amazing guitarist and such a lovely guy!! I Real southern Gentlemen Y, all.
I really don't care if Thin Lizzy always remains an obscure hidden gem . I thinks it is part of their blueprint and back story. I am just grafeful for how much my life changed when I discovered them. It all started when i picked up a used disc of ' dedication ' greatest hits. It was like the first time i heard 'smash hits' by Jimi Hendrix when I was very young. I was shocked how much i liked all the material. I would have never guessed they had 13 great albums that really had good songs throughout each of them. Just amazing!
Also for whatever reason the radio didn't get to ruin Lizzy like they did so many other bands. I would take them over any of the juggernaut acts like Zeppelin, Stones, all that stuff, no disrespect just being honest.
Overlooked for sure. This guy is one of the reasons Lizzy stayed together for as long as they did. And he truly got a style of his own. The mixed solos, the long tunes. the fact his solos are always nice to listen to. And, my god, when i saw him the first tim i thought too my self. This, is how a rocker looks like. The sunburst. The black/White/Red or in a combo. The moves. Ladied and gents. A true rockstar. This is my biggest hero. Even bigger than Jon Oliva and Fish. And thats a lot.
I learned this tune right here watching this. I got it. Thanks, Scott. No one ever throws in the low fat E under the Bm7th on that last chord.
Scott Gorham is a legend and a national treasure!
Gotta love the look on his face when the song is mentioned... always will be one of my favorite tracks.
Throws the thumb back like me and the boys, the old Lizzy gang, boys wanna fight you better let them, were back lol! 😆
I was 4 yrs old in 86 man part of me wishes I was a little older so i could be having a nice drink in a dim lit pub somewhere in 76 , during the golden age of rock and roll, juke box in the corner 😆
Just a testiment to how much that particular sound of the jail break album really infuenced so much of today's rock music. It was revolutionary, crazy to think they were on there last legs before the breakout. Back against the wall, genius apparent. Nothing is an accident man!
Im good with the BSR for these times, thank God! :)
He's been one of my biggest influences, and was definitely one out of many guitarists who get it in terms of knowing that the guitar is first and foremost, a
rhythm instrument!
Brilliant Scott!!!
Even tho I was learning bass in 78 Gorham and Robertson were what I noticed....they looked amazing, and their guitar weaving was just so darn good......
There is no life without Thin Lizzy
Scott has played some great stuff. Two of my faves are the leads in Downtown Sundown and Freedom Song.
Brilliant song! Thanks Scott! & Thin Lizzy!
EV
Scott a real legend !!! Hi from greece....
The most sympatic and friendly guy in the music business!
Thanks for the lessons! 🎸
Love this guy! Love TL.
I have actually heard of bands that build songs from scratch. You know, where there is a skeleton of a song and they all collaborate and brainstorm and then put it all together. Scott wasn't being condescending or downplaying just telling it like it was.
Nice to hear some stories on phil,🙂 And hearing about legends from the otherside,it's keeps the man alive
Why isnt this shredder gettn more hype? Such a beast of a player. And that's a fact!
Man that dude has to be the coolest, underestimated Rock legend ever. Scott and Robbo are the best team - just check out the work on Bad Reputation. Glad he's returned to the Les Paul though.
Scott is a BEAST. Very complex and complete guitar player with the most kickass licks, powerhose riffs abd Amazing jawdropping solos. The American Irish Flag ship, no doubt.
I can just imagine Phil presenting these really basic but totally solid ideas.
you are right scott deserve more credit as a awesome guitarist that he never acclaim to get;
@rocknrollguru23 Absolutely! Emerald, Don't Believe A Word, Are You Ready, Still In Love With You, Waitin' For An Alibi (a personal favourite), Dancin' In The Moonlight.....soooooo many. Phil Lynot was a brilliant song-writer.
finally.... a good guitarist on Guitarworld
That's great ❤
Great interview.
So many classic tunes start lika this. One bandmember has an idea, that sounds crap at first, and 40 years later it's a classic.
Satisfaction started like this to. Richards thought the riff was downright silly at first...
Scott Rocks !!!
Hey Donna Cool Story. Thin Lizzy were always popular up here in BC Canada... as I remember it anyway... then again, their vein sort of fit in real well with what was happening in Canadian music, i.e. April Wine, Trooper etc. It melded right in there. Cheers
Handsome dude x thank you Scott
Scott he's a Great Guitarist
Scott was the glue.
What a cool guy!!!!!!!!.
Love you man☺
Absolute Legend :D
@rocknrollguru23 - Few bands have done so consistent material as Thin Lizzy. Even their average material is good. Definitely one of my favorite bands !
I Love him.
magic.
He should get more recognition.
Really cool video
Achingly cool.
The word "skeletal" came to my mind too. Skull, actually. Because,... well, you have eyes.
...well written tune non the less....
Its all going pretty good yeah i like that !
He would stand around go what do you think? Lol
Next to play I must say is
Scotty Shot Gun Gorham and away!
Love the tone and distortion. Scott taught me how to play rhythm and how to understand music. Not a lot of rock musicians do that at least for me. Having Downey and Lynott helped a lot but the guitars filled in all the gaps.
RIP-Gary Moore
And that Really IS how Great Songs are Written for any one out ther who is wondering !!
Dear Heart, in the flesh.
He played all the guitars on the Bad Reputation album and to me it's the best album they ever made - Bad reputation, Opium Trail, That woman's gonna break your heart, the whole album is beautiful!
- that and Live & Dangerous.
Robertson did a few solos.
@@thefonzkiss Ok thanks 👍🏻
Phil and Brian Downey were Irish. Brian Robertson was Glaswegian. Him and Scott came much later. Scott really got into the Irish heritage of the band.
Leave a link to the full video at least.
RIP-Good Music
I fucking love Lizzy.
The hardest rocking swing rhythm EVER
I rembember when Scott came over from the states,we were waiting hopeing he'd join our band as his brother in law was rehearsing with us (bob seibenberg )who later went on to join SUPERTRAMP) BOB WAS A REALLY NICE GUYand they lived for a while in Ealing.....but I must admit his personna and his great look made him a force in the rock band look ,he coulld have sold shampoo with his hair before that Pratt from europe anyway .............rock on
@domnal ....Had to go back and see what my original comment was.
Well said sir and well explained.
When i was a lot younger the fast guitarslingers really impressed me, not so much now.
Give me an excellent tone, mellow and slow, throw in a couple of beers and life feels good in this modern age.
Rock on friend but not at a ferocious pace.
they're gods
Cool you knew them, but I would have to say, that from a guitarists perspective, Thin Lizzy and in particular Scott G and Brian R.duo were well respected for their talent in the States. They even put them on the US charts in 76 with their Jailbreak album. I belive Boys are back in town peaked at number 12,, which was pretty big.
What a Great Band. but you are right, they should have been more famous here in the states.
Would love to see the whole video but trying to find it in guitarworld.com is like looking for a needle in a haystack 😕
Well, someone has to come up with the seed. Scott and the Brians brought the songs to life though.
Thin Lizzy pretty much developed the twin guitar lead... They were a huge influence on Dave murray and Adrian Smith.
cool
Nice
Anyone know where i can find the rest of the interview, i couldnt find it on the guitarworld.com site, if any links available i would appreciate
lots of work in a good sdong :)
This is Beautiful!! Simple Like Status Quo. But not Simplistic.
@rocknrollguru23 I couldn't agree more!
But I suppose that if people download or buy this song, that it hopefully causes them to explore a bit further and see whats below the surface.
@68blues Indeed, if you really look closely at the history of the guitar, it's truly a rhythm instrument first, and used for solo later..... The ultimate example of this from a guitarist viewpoint is Les Paul and Keith Richards.... It's all about rhythm in which a solo is built upon....!
I totally agree with your statement when blokes get older they usually play Strats. Look at Pete Townshend. He played Strats for the past like 20 years or so. I mean he played Strats in the '60s of course but he was often seen with Les Pauls but the last 20 years I think it would be Clapton model Strats. I am getting into Strats too myself. They are becoming my favorite guitars. When we see Steve Jones and Slash leaving the Paul behind and playing Strat then we know they are getting old!
he is basically saying -me and Robertson wrote a lot of that song .
The guitarworld link is dead. Anybody know where I can find the full video? This is pure gold.
I wish i knew would love to see the rest
I guess that means that rock is dead. Damn.
Looking for it too
Hey, Arbekbuseraren,
Where do you hear Scott Gorham say that he's the main man behind Thin Lizzy? I don't hear him say anything like that in this video. Do you hear ghost voices?
Of course, Phil was the main man, but Scott was at least the longest lasting guitar player during the group's history and you can't deny the influence he had on the group
when he says that brian downey put is groove in, isnt brian downey the drummer and brian robertson the guitarist?
Scott looks like a badass gunslinger.
And he is. =)
Can we have "Angel From The Coast" please ?
Was originally called GI Joe’s Back In Town.
Cold Sweat and Whiskey In the Jar. :D
@LastOfSixMusic....Would you you say that the guitar would have been better used as a rhythm instrument in songs such as Layla, Oh Well, Snowy Whites Bird Of Paradise and the Shadows Wonderful Land.
There are times when a superbly toned lead guitar is hard to beat, especially if played slow, possibly by the likes of Dave Gilmour.
By the way i'm not knocking Goram but you've voiced your opinion and so have i if you disagree let me know.....cool.
this guys funny cool guy
dude has nice tone
@domnal it's been a long time since i saw scott...he is really old...i'm just kiddin'...peace!
Wow, if I had seen him in a bar looking the way he does now, I never would have known this was Scott Gorham. Interesting video nonetheless.
@TheBusker90 oh, i get it. thanks dude. :)
Are you guys going to put up the Cowboy Song part of this video?
So where is the lesson? Where are all the parts and solo of that song?
I tried to look on the gw site for more of this. Nuthin...what am I doing wrong...or is this it?
@rocknrollguru23 I love "Still in love with you"
jailbreak is a great tune
These guys are listed as the writers of this song . Who are they ?Written by Dino Fekaris, Frederick J. Perren
The Death Blooms I'd like to see proof of that.
