One thing that is worth noting is that several vehicle sections were actually plopped on top of an earlier level layout. See that ground model work underneath you in Ice Station Bandicoot for example? That was an early level layout, an 'arena' design where you could roam in an out open area. They cut that idea early on and redesigned the 'arenas' into vehicle levels. I feel like that might be why there's a bit of an onslaught of them in the final game. Awesome video as always, and it's cool to see old footage of a really early Beta Version of Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, my 7TH Favourite Crash Bandicoot Game.

It's really sad that Traveler's Tales were unable to realize their visions with Crash tWoC and Twinsanity with Universal giving them no time and the team having troubles with getting organized...
True, also loved the concept of the warp buttons actually being vortexes Crash dived into, with the loading screen falling animation being a leftover from that. It was a rather cool transition, similar to 2 and Warped's. I get the final game taking out unfinished ideas or ones that didn't really work, but I don't understand cutting these fun little bits of cartooniness that the betas already had showcased. They could have gave the game a needed bit of life to it.
Yes, while WOC is definitely a lesser and much jankier Crash 3, I will give the game this over 3, I honestly love the soundtrack as it really embodies the early 2000s weirdness that I love while being pretty distinct from the previous games before, it's honestly really good IMO!
There’s one thing I always think about when it comes to old Wrath of Cortex ideas and that is Coco having a twin sister named QuoCo and to be honest I can see the whole evil Twin sister Coco idea Wrath of Cortex had when it was still called Crash Bandicoot Worlds still existing alongside Crunch as well as that whole evil Twin Crash was going to have in a cancelled 2004 game (his name is Crush from What I remember hearing in a youtube video). Think about it we don’t know how many mutated Bandicoot siblings Crash and Coco truly have. I mean considering Crunch’s existence there could be a bunch for all we know plus Cortex is known to do a lot of stuff in secret I mean he created Crunch in secret
Perhaps an early build of this game will release at some point. After all, Crash 3's yet another aplha prototype surfaced up with an early version of Future Frenzy. Dude I just talked about the beta and coincidentally found your video. The game would've been much better because it would've had twinsanitys open world levels, to me it looks like twinsanity took most of the elements from twoc and implemented them.
I remember looking at articles talking about hownone level was inside of a giant plane for another level and trying to picture how Wrath of Cortex would look like as an open world game instead of a level based one.
I feel like if the game kept its original idea, it’d be better than what most critics think. I’m not gonna lie, the old story was pretty unique and I wouldn’t mind it, but with all these things we probably would’ve never gotten the legend that is Crunch Bandicoot.
Man, some of this footage reminds me of Sonic Adventure, or at least strums the same chords in my mind. It's like a missing link in Crash's evolution. Wild to think of the direction the franchise might have gone in had Wrath of Cortex kept closer to it's original vision.
I think those storyboards in the interview section of the strategy guide are very interesting as I think the cutscenes those storyboards are for never made it into the final game. At least I don't remember them.

i honestly think wrath of cortex ended up being an alright classic game. it stuck to crashes roots and didn’t turn it into a 2000’s game stereotype. it kept the original spirit alive at least a little longer. but once we reached crash of the titans, thats when crash changed for the worse. crash worlds looked interesting but also really weird. im sorta glad they scrapped it and went for something more traditional. wrath of cortex is always one of the ps2 games i keep going back to, and it gets such a bad rep for no reason.
This video needs either an update or part 2 because a lot of new stuff has been revealed thanks to Darkaiser, such as development slideshow and the lost loading screen mini game
12:50 I think they changed out the flamingos to cranes because of the overall Asian theme of the level. Cranes have a big cultural importance in most countries that are referred to in that level.
First game I bought/played along with my PS2 in either 2001/2002 when I got one... Almost INSTANTLY I knew something was off and this game was of a lesser quality compared to the PS1 Crash games. I thankfully recognised and knew that Jak & Daxter The Precursor Legacy was the new Naughty Dog developed game and I still play through that Trilogy yearly to this day (it's also PEAK Naughty Dog imo)
Why did they change flamingoes into cranes? Because the level is set in Japan, and cranes are native to Japan, flamingoes are not. P.S. If you need a British voice over in the future, feel free to reach out 🤐
16:25 I wonder If that Is why the Xbox version says "Players 2" on the back of the cover case. Or that ws a mistake because It said Coco was playable for the first time. At least here In the UK. If Anyone else has the Xbox Classics version of Wrath of Cortex from the UK, It would be great to get proper confirmation as, unfortunately, I no longer have the case for the Game.
That backstory for Cortex is awesome and fits perfectly with the late Brendan O'Brien's excellent performance. He was legit intimidating until the sequels flandarized him, but I guess that's proportional to the amount of times a villain is defeated anyways. Was that something Naughty Dog also thought of or was that established by Universal?
This was the beginning of the bad times. I'm happy crash 4 finally came out and brought back the classic feel a bit better. I still think they can do a better job like how they get rid of how the slide jump works and how the amount of boxes is insane. I hope anther game gets made even tho toys for Bob won't be involved. Also tawna leaving crash for pinstripe is fucked
Even though it's not my favorite crash game, I feel like wrath of cortex is overhated... it sure wasn't too original but every level was unique with a (usually) banger soundtrack. The medieval and factory levels were badass af and made me feel epic beating them as a kid.
I thought ND took 2 years to make Crash 1 while for 2 & Warped they simply just carried over assets from the prequels. Unfortunately WOC devs had to make a lot of assets from scratch on top of not being familiar with this series in barely a year with having to live up to the success of the ND games, so yeah they got done dirty the most.
If only developers (and the gaming industry in general) had more confidence and courage to remake games like this. Sure, they're not well liked, but i think that actually works in their favor as it means there's plenty they can improve on other than just graphics. They could very well genuinely realize the potential the project initially had and, at the very least, would be an improvement. Maybe I'm just being too optimistic since i have no idea how game development works.
If i had the abilities, i would try my best to remaster wrath of cortex, as it was the first crash game i played and what got me into playing games in general, and i would love to use some of the ideas the devs cut or dropped, and even improve other parts. (And definitely give all the classic villain bosses their own fights instead of them being crunch over and over again, and have crunch be the final boss instead)
I actually like Crunch being the main boss being fueled by the Elementals. It fits the narrative of the story that explains why Cortex's secret weapon is such a big deal and why everyone failed too many times to defeat Crash. The original concept of having mini bosses would work since "Crash 4 It's About Time" did a pretty good job with it. So bosses like Dingodila, Tiny, etc having roles as short mini-bosses in certain levels can be done right by altering some level designs. Like, this could easily be done with the vehicle base levels, just make the majority of the overall goal to defeat the Mini-boss of that course.
You really out did yourself with this video man. It's pretty interesting to get an insightful documentary into the development of Wrath of Cortex, while I don't like the game, I do appreciate the effort put into this game.
Its mostly coz of nostalgia but i'll always have a soft spot for the ps2 crash games. Sure theyre not as good as the original trilogy but i really liked how they tried to make each game different. Theres so much potential, if only the development went a bit smoother.
I alway thought it made sense to remake the weakest game. I mean, there are so many ways you can improve it that there's bond to be more positives than negatives.
This game felt terribly unfinished. I played many games, came on YT, and saw videos how how they were unfinished even though I had no idea. But this game felt like a beta build while I was playing it!
Back then 12 to 14 months was more or less industry standard, it had proven time and time again that it was actually enough time at least as far as the PS1 was concerned, there's a lot of elements that go into development so who knows maybe 1 year was the standard for better teams or something either way it certainly didn't help that wrath was on multiple consoles :v
The development of this game makes everything make so much more sense. They essentially had a whole world(s) and other systems to make the game a completely different more open experience but in the end had to cave and pretty much use cookie cutters and frame out crash levels inside the worlds they built. It explains the games kinda lopsided nature, truly tragic even tho I love the game dearly. The 2000’s vibe cannot be matched
Hey man, great video! I’ve always been very fascinated with wrath of cortex since I was a little kid, and I’ve taken a big interest in it’s beta contents. Even though I already knew most of what was in this video, I really enjoyed hearing your theories on it, and the part with the official guidebook. I’d never seen that prior to this video, so that was definitely the most interesting part! There’s a channel that I recommend you look into, if you haven’t already, called beta tester. A lot of his videos are very old, but they show a lot of very cool things on this game, about prototype stuff, and other neat things. He actually made a video about the E3 build, and found more cut levels in the files like compactor reactor, Eskimo roll, and more. They’re very incomplete though, and barely load. Hopefully we’ll discover earlier builds later on as well.
Wrath of Cortex always felt like a PS1 game in PS2. even as a kid I rember i thought it was actually a PS1 game lol seems like that's more likely the case, judging by how long the development took.
Even despite the outcoming both of them dragonfly and wrath of cortex where both rushed by universal for Christmas date, i can think wrath of cortex even tought they give crush instead of famous villains from previous games i liked than is competitor, but both of them again are half decent. But not far from perfect.
Fun fact: This video was originally going to be about the beta of Twinsanity. But the beta for that game has been documented to death at this point. I wanted to do Wrath cuz hardly anyone talks about it. Especially in a documentary format. I still may do a beta Twinsanity video sometime in the future. But not anytime soon.

Seemed like Crash 1 was the only one to properly breathe during development.
😂dude youbare the kind of fan i love
Interesting vid
It's pretty interesting to get an insightful documentary into the development of Wrath of Cortex, while I don't like the game, I do appreciate the effort put into this game.
what's the music playing @ 1:20

Cranes are very important in many East Asian cultures, including Japan, while flamingos are just weird and out of place in the setting.
Its mostly coz of nostalgia but i'll always have a soft spot for the ps2 crash games. Sure theyre not as good as the original trilogy but i really liked how they tried to make each game different. Theres so much potential, if only the development went a bit smoother.
Honestly crash's earlier model looks way better than the final game's model
that was a theory. you're welcome for watching.
I always thought this game was super underated. Sure it wasn't original but it was more great Crash gameplay
Crash Wrath of Cortex deserves a Remake I stand by it
I alway thought it made sense to remake the weakest game.
Cool, but your audio mixing is all over the place, with sections really quite and sections really loud. Just FYI!
Wrath of Cortex always felt like a PS1 game in PS2. even as a kid I rember i thought it was actually a PS1 game lol
seems like that's more likely the case, judging by how long the development took.
What if I played it on Xbox where it looks great and Fur?
Where can I see that old storyboard?
Even despite the outcoming both of them dragonfly and wrath of cortex where both rushed by universal for Christmas date, i can think wrath of cortex even tought they give crush instead of famous villains from previous games i liked than is competitor, but both of them again are half decent. But not far from perfect.
4:35 Did you choke on something while recording?
Why did I think you were the guy that talks about Simpsons theories
Wrath of Cortex feels like it was made by an AI.
I couldn't get past the load times on Wrath of Cortex.
Leaving a comment for the algorithm.
Se me hace que este juego iba a ser originalmente para PlayStation 1
Why does the early Crash model look better than the final version
cool video :)
If you do a Twinsanity beta video, you'll probably have an hour of cut content to talk about
Fun fact: This video was originally going to be about the beta of Twinsanity. But the beta for that game has been documented to death at this point. I wanted to do Wrath cuz hardly anyone talks about it. Especially in a documentary format. I still may do a beta Twinsanity video sometime in the future. But not anytime soon.
