  • It is no longer a secret; Indonesia is blessed with constant surf as the roaring 40's produce swell after swell year round. Bali is the epicenter of the Indonesian surfing world. Bali has it all, surf for all skill levels, beauty, culture, endless places to stay, restaurants of every type cuisine imageable, and nightlife. For surfers it is too good to be true and the byproduct is crowds.
The days of "nobody was out, it was prefect" might be over for the most part. Every knows about it: Aussies, Americans, Europeans, Brazilians, and locals. They got surf forecasts, guides, videos, and many know where to surf on what conditions. Regardless, we at Bali Surf Hunters will attempt to do the impossible, find fun surf in Bali with less crowds. We might get lucky, find a few spots with a handful of surfers on that particular day. Likely the less crowded spots won't be as good as the best premier spots and for better and worse, there will not likely be guys shredding it apart in the videos but isn't that the point, surfing waves where you actually catch the set waves?
The is video was shot on May 1 2023. Balian is often effect by crosswinds after 10am just like Canggu to the south and Medewi to the northwest. Yes, Bali is known to have a shark and there has been a few attacks, non fatal. Balian has a rivermouth feeding into it in front of the right. The attacks seem to happen just after a strong rain because the silt from the river blocks visibility. You can read up on how many shark attacks have occurred. Some tend to exaggerate how often so look it up. To be safe, paddle in and out where the left is and don't surf Balian just after it rains. If you are fearful, do surf it, and if really fearful, stop surfing, watch tennis on TV.

The guy in the red shorts has the smoothest style. Not really ripping as such, but I can watch people who surf like that all day.

It appears he is riding a twin fin. Those wide nosed twin fins are perfect for a wave like Balian. They get into waves early, have a relaxed rocker that gives the board more planning speed which carries a person though the flat spots on a soft Balian wave. Twin fins are faster than thrusters. Twin fins tend to not do vertical snaps as well. The width that gives them planning speed also make it harder to do quick rail to rail surfing. If you like this style surfing, like pumping down the line turns, a twin fin is a perfect board.

There's still plenty of uncrowded waves in Indonesia for those willing to explore and possibly sleep in a tent.
      Thanks for watching!

Sharks like it too there... especially during rainy season but not only. Last attack in Balian was in July

There are very few sharks attack in Bali ( less then 10 in the last 10 years) but they all happen in Balian because bull sharks like to swim in the river mouth to eat trash…

@@7siamesecat thanks. Well, maybe better to choose Medewi then. Less than 10/10 seems a small possibility but math doesn’t guarantee 11th will be not yours :/

@@mishachesnokov it was my friend, he was paddling out at dawn trying to be first out. Shark hit his hand as he was paddling. 25 stitches around his hand. they're there, but its safer in daylight and when the waters clean.

Call me crazy but i'll choose crowd over bullsharks

The high risk occurs right after it rains, and the water is murky from the rivermouth.

@@BaliSurfHunters not always, my friend had his hand mauled there last year paddling out at dawn. wanted to be first out. Shark hit him as he was paddling, he then had to get back in with blood pouring from his hand as he paddled. He won't ever go back. Im heading back for my 6th time and hope for the best lol ;)
