My first trip to Lombok was in 1982...pumping outside Ekas and outside Gerupuk...did not encounter any other surfers during our 2 weeks...dirt roads and only accom in Kuta was Anda..it was totally raw back then..an unforgettable trip.
My experience is, from at least May to late November Lombok surf coast, ie the south coast, cops onshore winds prevailing from the South East from dawn to dusk. This pretty much means 75% of the quality spots are taken out. Its not just a bit onshore, the winds absolutely blows hard, Leaving you with 3 maybe 4 decent spots to share amongst intermediate and advanced surfers. It’s manageable at the moment because numbers are generally low and picking the right tide for many surfers seems to be a challenge. Most spots in Lombok are very tide dependent as well as wind dependent. That being said, it will only be a matter of time, as Kuta and Lombok in general becomes the overflow of Bali and Kuta is developing fast, that Lombok wont be a great option in years to come. The reason Bali is a better option even though it’s absolutely packed with surfers is A. it has a ton of beach breaks, Lomb9k has NO beach breaks at all. B. the wind on the South West coast all the way out to the Bukit tend to be offshore from early to at least mid day from Feb to Nov and even randomly through wet season, C. Access from Bali West coast to East coast is a pretty short ride which means you can always find a wave magnet with offshore winds. D. Lombok wet season can be a challenge due to rain and landslides and a lot of quality spots can only be accessed by muddy dirt tracks which are a challenge in dry season let alone wet season. Walk around Kuta and you’ll find a shit load of ppl with bandaged legs and arms because they are not experienced bike riders and fall easily on Lomboks dangerous roads. The roads look safe but have pockets of gravel on them which catch ppl out.
Just spent a month in lombok fell in love with the place fun waves every day and met awesome travellers There is crowds but also waves without crowds that are harder to surf Loved it Try and get to mawi in the afternoons on low tide it’s so sick. FYI, the a-frame wave you describe as Insides wasn’t insides. It’s a wave called Don Dons 3:28 which requires a bit more swell than insides to work properly. Insides is another 5 min boat ride further to the east of Don Dons and works on smaller swells too. Great video!
Great video Dan, you were spot on! Stayed in Kuta and I even agreed with your food choices. Surfed Grupuk and/or Ekas everyday for 10 days. Didn’t want to travel that far for dessert point.
