This beautiful mint color that you see in the New Room is called “green verditer.” Recent scholarship by Mount Vernon has shown that this pigment derived its color from the mineral malachite. The green paint was applied to wallpaper that was then placed on the walls.
I was there a few years ago with my family. We loved that we are allowed to walk through the house and to have a glimpse of how it might have been to live there. It's a great job what you do!
Thank you! We do our best to re-create what it would have looked and felt like to live in the mansion in 1799. We are in the middle of restoring some rooms in the mansion, hopefully you can come back soon and see them!
Were you able to walk through the rooms? or just the hallways and look into the rooms from the doorways? Every other historical house I've toured wouldn't let you into the actual rooms themselves, just the hallways.
Mt. Vernon is a truly cool place with a sense of calm right outside the chaos of D.C. On a high school trip many decades ago, I remember standing on the misty hillside there above the Potomac feeling the same sense of awe and appreciation for the area that GW must have felt.
My family lives nearby, so when my aunt and uncle took all of us there years ago, I remember all of us little kids calling the beds "sandwich beds" because of their shape and how they were made back then. No idea why we used that term to describe them though! Lol. Really enjoyed it, would love to come back now as an adult who has such a deep appreciation for history and its preservation.
all of our history is important....good and bad. it should remain preserved. or we can never teach our children to fully appreciate and learn from those who came before us and see how far we have come since that era. it would be a disservice to not preserve and use that history to teach that all men are created equal and that God is no respector of persons. we can teach and preserve hatred and instill bitterness for what ancestors endured or we can turn it to good and teach the strength and preserverance, and determination of a resilient people and country. overcome evil with good and not succumb to the bitterness.
Very very accurate. Our preservation and collections department uses scientific analyses and historical documentation (such as Washington's letters and detailed inventory) to determine paint and wallpapers coloring. Our aim is to match, as close as possible, to the way the mansion looked in 1799.
Not one African American is shown working at mount vernon. The lack of inclusion of diverse workforce speaks volumes of why mount vernon should be Re opened as an African American community center. An absolute outrage
Im sure nothing what my ancestors suffered and didn't get paid for and I'm sure it was for more worse than what you guys are doing and preserve what racism
Summer Fancy So, what do you think about black people that work as historic interpreters(the people that dress like slaves on historic sites)? I’m black btw, and I am also studying public history (historic sites, museums, etc) and I grew up hearing about my family history including slavery. That’s not preserving slavery. Your statement is not helpful in any sort of way by encouraging healthy dialogue about actual racism. I doubt you have visited any historical site in and around Washington DC, because if you did, you would see that they do not sugar coat or ignore the plight and terror of slavery. They hire black people to tell the story, honestly and accurately. our people who do that line of work ARE working to educate the world about what our people have gone through and that there’s still work to be done. I understand your frustration at these days with so much going on. I just hope that all of us (every race) can work together to have a better country/world. But we’re not going to accomplish anything by anger and exchanging hate for hate. I truly do wish you peace.
Muddy thinking leads to muddy writing. I can't even begin to figure out just _what in the heck_ you're babbling about. But of course you can write "racist". That's a truly valuable addition to any conversation.
THANK YOU for preserving these architectures for posterity! Your hard work isn't going unnoticed.
Thanks for taking such care of a very important part of the history of the USA.
I'm feeling those mint green walls

Every so often a person comes along and elevates humanity. Rest in peace General Washington.
He owned human beings and enslavec African Americans throughout his lifetime. An immoral war criminal
Education, hertiage, knowledge is something so fantastic,it is worth reaching for culture.Good luck and respect 🕊️

I wish my house was cleaned every day like that. Love to visit some day!
I enjoyed this posting because it reminds me that this a house first...then a museum.

Thank you.
I wish they would come to my house.
can you do a video about the clocks/time peaces/watches ?
In the early 70’s I was on the grounds crew after school and summers, it was not as welly cared for back then
I slid on the staircase 😂😂😂😂 the house is beautiful on the inside btw
Haha Martha would have scolded you. George would have probably chuckled.
How historically accurate are the colors?

What was wrong with how it orginally looked before it was touched by preserve people
I wanna do it
I wonder about how much gum was found.
There is a fair bit that makes it way into the Mansion, even though it's prohibited to bring inside.
