Thomas Dixon, you see, here in the U.K., because we never had anyone like George Washington, our Democracy formed more... roughly from our past. The position of Prime Minister didn’t really have a hard beginning, it just emerged slowly. We never got the chance to suddenly decide our Democratic ways in such a short time as you did, so you’ll find them to be more traditional. Our Prime Ministers, as an example, don’t have a limit to how many terms they get, and as a result, after 3 terms (each term is 5 years) in office, some get a little silly. I do think that the US political system (not the method of voting though, I still favour our British method in that sense) is a very clever system, certainly better than our British one.

"Gentlemen, you will permit me to put on my spectacles, for I have not only grown gray but almost blind in the service of my country." -Washington to the Newburgh conspirators
Fun fact: The producers of John Adams didn’t hire actors. They actually created a time machine, travelled to 18th century America, and recorded everything that happened there
Some tried to make him "King." He said, "I didn't fight a war to replace one King George with another." America certainly isn't perfect, but most countries don't have a heritage like this. The most freedom loving people in the world.
When, at 3:36, he says "So help me God." and the camera cuts to John Adams, I honestly had tears in my eyes. When Adams, a brilliant but arrogant man, fully realizes not only the importance of the moment, but sees truly for the first time the great man that George Washington was, it is a superb bit of acting and directing. This scene depicts one of the greatest and most important moments of the entire millennium, and it seems that all involved understood its importance. Just awesome.
William Lattanzio Totally agree. Excellent acting and editing all around. Good to see Adams realize he should be so self-centered. Our estimation of him rises, doesn't it.
@@robertwilkinson2889 most wealthy people of the colonial Era had banking and credit accounts in London. Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, etc all had dealings with British banks. Even during the Revolution the US didn’t have its own currency, and when it did start printing “Continentals” they were virtually worthless and had no real backing by the Congress. It wasn’t until spring of 1781 that the states actually became United by ratification of the Articles of Confederacy, which ironically was the year that the “continental” was removed from circulation because its value was all but vanished. It wasn’t until 1792, if I’m not mistaken, that an official, government backed currency, the dollar, was created. Up until that time the US used an odd mixture of Spanish Pieces of Eight, the French Livre, and the British Pound Sterling. These were the currencies most likely to be found in circulation before, during, and for several years after the American Revolution. So it was not uncommon at all for a person of means during the Revolution to have accounts in foreign banks, with English banks being preferred.
I just saw this for the first time, and it was chilling. I literally and instantly 'felt' the "brilliant but arrogant" John Adams and equally felt the change in him when he realized what was happening. Yes, indeed, superb acting and directing. I even said to myself, "What's up with John Adams? He's ticked off about something?" and then I understood the incredible scene in front of me. Just amazing. Wow! Generations of us wish we could have had this kind of input in our school days. But, well, you know, we didn't, unfortunately.
did you read the book by David McCullough? if not, I encourage you to do so. it is a fascinating book about a fascinating individual. you can look at George Washington and say the military life and what not is slightly more "exciting" (there are some great books on George Washington as well so it is not like he is forgotten), but Adams played a very crucial role in helping America claim independence and the birth of this nation. Sadly, Adams contributions are not always remembered and it is a damn shame. that is why it is great David wrote the book and they even turned it into a miniseries. don't get me wrong, I am all for a Washington miniseries, but the fact you don't think John Adams was interesting enough or special enough, shows you truly don't know his life and how important he was to this nation (Adams might not have been military, but he had an exciting life of his own). Adams may not have been poor but he was not necessarily born fabulously wealthy either. he struggled somewhat establishing his practice. he wanted to prove himself his entire life but often found himself falling somewhat short compared to guys like Washington and Jefferson (though again in reality, was still indeed such a crucial figure in history). I am not taking anything away from Washington, but Adams . Like I said, if you haven't read the book yet, I really encourage you to do so. McCullough is one of my favorite historians and I think you will appreciate (at least more) the truly great man Adams was and his contribution to American history
+ninjast4r So your idea of writing an accurate story, warts and all, is to include motives which you have attributed to his actions without any evidence, your opinion on his handling of the war despite your lack of perspective, and of course your unsubstantiated insight into his character. Sounds like you tried really hard to use critical thinking but got lost in your own imagination.
Interesting, these things I did not know. Then again, what can be said about Obama? I guess I should not be surprised, frauds have existed all through history. Obama is still clearly the biggest.
Fun fact: The few words George Washington adds at the end of his inauguration-“so help me God”, was not expected by anyone. It wasn’t the words he was requested to repeat. Many believe he’d added that last part, as he’d prayed God would watch over him, and guide him as the first President of the United States, in faithfully, and justly running the young nation. Such goes the line, “In God trust”.
"In God we trust" originated during the Cold War. The government portrayed the Soviet Union as "godless," so they needed to make America more obviously "godful."

Daniel Ryan absolutely. and while he did loose the election it would've still been a good moment since from what I've read he and Washington had a very good friendship.
I’m just going to list a bunch of fun facts about George Washington since we’re here: George Washington would regularly walk in the streets of Philadelphia during his presidency among the people to separate the boundaries of leader and common citizen. George Washington was extremely peculiar in his body language and enjoyed being in control of himself, meaning he hated being touched and small talk. George Washington encouraged his subordinates to criticize him. George Washington donated thousands of dollars of his own money to the creation of the first Jewish and Catholic churches in the U.S., being a strong advocate for religious tolerance and the freedom to worship. He also allowed his slaves to freely practice their own religions on Mount Vernon. George Washington was 6 foot 4, towering over his men in the field of battle. George Washington never wore a wig, he powdered his hair white and even put a covering in his collar so that the powder didn’t stick to his shirt. George Washington aimed to establish a peaceful coexistence with the Native American peoples, signing the Pickering Treaty in 1794 in hopes that his countrymen would respect the boundaries and cultures of the indigenous Indians after his death (unfortunately this would not last). George Washington was the first to sign the Constitution of the United States. George Washington was proclaimed to be one of the greatest military strategists in history by Prussian Kaiser Fredrick Wilhelm II. George Washington commanded a desegregated army to the extent where a quarter of his northern force was comprised of African Americans fighting for their freedom. George Washington envisioned the U.S. as an asylum for all people of the world to live in, openly expressing his support for foreign immigration. George Washington was a Freemason. George Washington wore civilian clothing during his presidency, an act that appalled the European monarchs who always dressed in military honors, dresses, or other royal clothing that costed more than a suburban house. George Washington was given the key to the Bastille by the French revolutionary government, it can be found in Mount Vernon on display. George Washington despised holding power, repeatedly stating how he would rather be in his grave than be proclaimed emperor of the world. George Washington was posthumously promoted to General of the Armies in 1976, a six-star rank, by means to secure that he would not be outranked by any future military personnel. George Washington’s face was plastered everywhere in the young nation during his presidency and especially after his death. Think North Korea and China except the people actually _want_ his face in their house. George Washington stopped a potential coup d’etat against the Second Continental Congress, which would have granted him full power over the government as a despot. George Washington regularly exposed himself to enemy fire, most famously during the Seven Years’ War when French and native soldiers were firing at his soldiers in all directions in a forest. Washington led his men out of the battle, his clothes covered in bullet holes but not a single wound on him. One of the French-aligned natives who was present even approached Washington after his inauguration, congratulating him and telling the President that he had fired at him point-blank during the battle several times and missed all of the shots, convincing the native warrior that Washington was protected by the gods. George Washington is the only slave-owning president who freed all of his slaves. The ideal cause of the Revolution caused him to question the morality of chattel slavery and by the 1780’s and 90’s, he openly stated how he no longer wanted to own people, participate in the slave trade, or separate families, even supporting policies of gradual emancipation and putting an end to the Atlantic slave trade. He even stated that all of his slaves were to be given proper education to pursue respectable fields of work and his estate would provide housing for the elderly. After his death, then-First Council Napoleon Bonaparte held a personal eulogy praising George Washington and ordered all of France to hold ten days of mourning, even the British Royal Navy flew their flags at half-staff upon learning the news.
More fun facts! George Washington loved animals, but despised riding horses. He dearly loved his mules and was very overprotective of them, leaving a long list of instructions to his servants on how to take care of them. He considered mules to be the superior equine mount (and at this time, they were considered a king's mount) because they are far braver and sure-footed than horses. In fact, it was illegal to export a mule from Spain (where the best mules are bred) without the king's consent. He also gave his animals silly names - he had dogs named Sweetlips, Drunkard and Madame Moose. And when he finally received a mule as a gift from the king of Spain, he named it Royal Gift.
thanks for these great facts. but I struggle to see how Washington was one of the greatest military tacticians of all time, I know it was just the opinion of somebody but still.
@@martinh1309 Not just somebody - Frederick the Great. A man who is considered objectively to be one of the greatest military tacticians of his age and maybe of all time. I don't know if the claim regarding his opinion of Washington is true, I'll look into it later, but this by no means would be a small compliment.
No, The United States is not perfect. But "in order to form a more perfect Union" Our nation elected George Washington to start leading us there. We started with the best and the rest is up to us. Thanks to George Washington.
Well said Paul G, well said. There it is. Right there in the Preamble of our sacred U.S. Constitution. "In order to FORM a more perfect union" This is the task our forefathers so succinctly left to US over 200 years ago and together, we SHALL form a more perfect union. And that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth. So let it be written, so let it be DONE. Amen.
The nation did not elect George Washington. There was no campaign, no ballot boxes or anything that would be recognizable today. He was elected by the electors of the Electoral College. In 1789 only 10 of 13 States sent electors, but they were unanimous in their vote for Washington. This was a body of men that were chosen in some cases by the people of their respective states, but in nine states these electors were chosen by the state legislatures. The first election that would be recognizable today was in 1824. As time has passed, the electoral college has become subject to what is known as the "winner takes all" system. The population of each state vicariously elects the President. Each state has a corresponding number of electors in the electoral college. The candidate with the majority of votes essentially wins the state. Then the electors must cast their votes in accordance with their state's outcome. However, this outcome hardly resembles the actual voting of each American citizen. Thus, each election shows a certain preference by the population, but the people do not directly elect the President. This is why the number of Electoral College votes trump the popular vote. Hence, it has always been in the hands of a privileged body of electors far removed from the population.
What a day this must have been. There could have been no better man to set the tone for the new Republic than George Washington himself. God bless our Republic. God preserve the memory of our Founders and their wisdom and good example.

After watching this, Adams, Jefferson, and Franklin were also so important. We need massive banking reform as they would agree since our Republic has been hijacked by a banking cartel.

What I love is that even though Adams is the main subject of the miniseries, the show doesn't shy away from presenting his flaws. He's vainglorious and self-important in the opening here--he's a very real person. But at the same time, you see as the scene progresses, a man passionately devoted to the country, and as inspired by Washington as any American. He's both principled and petty--a delicate balance to strike.
George Washington: How a leader should be; even soft-spoken as portrayed at the oath, he resembles the humble and guiding spirit of Presidential leadership.
All that hesitancy at the beginning, with VP Adams expressing his bewilderment of the moment, almost wondering why he was even there, not sure of what to do next, made *me* wonder what was supposed to happen next. Giamatti played his part so well. Washington motioned Adams to proceed ahead of him to the platform, then Adams stopped himself and allowed Washington to go first. Perfect. It was an age of manners, courtesy, and propriety. This was such a great series. It's grievous that too few Americans know anything about this.
The recreation of that scene felt so real. They did an outstanding job authenticating everything from the clothing, the mannerisms of the people, to the greenscreen digital background of the city! Amazing.

The War of 1812 was really a draw. No territory changed, the main issue that caused it was resolved before it started and (if you wanna get technical) the British sort of had the upper hand of the draw because they got the White House.

Cullyn Knight It was not a draw. The British attempted an invasion of the United States and they were thwarted. That means the United States won because they achieved their own goal of stopping the invasion. The British burned the White House inside a city which had been evacuated before their arrival. There was no real political gain there because they simply burned an empty building. They didn't capture the President and the Congress which was their goal in taking Washington,DC. The General who reassured the King that he'd quickly deal with America and re-annex it into the Empire boasted,"America is like an unruly Spaniel(dog),you simply slap it on the nose." It's quite a funny moment when everyone struggles to hear him, but it's accurate. Not only were there no microphones etc. at the time but Washington actually didn't have the deep, commanding voice he's sometimes depicted as having in films/TV shows. The guy wore heavy dentures and suffered from life threatening lung diseases as a child, not to mention he didn't like to open his mouth too much due to his remaining rotting teeth. I doubt he was even capable of amplifying his voice above a certain volume. Still, the guy's eloquence and leadership were enough to inspire respect.

It was the only time in American history where we had a President, a unified nation and one political party. Now what we have today is tantamount to two entirely different countries living on one landmass. Democrats and Republicans are no longer the same people it feels like.
Colonel Washington was a "chancer". His diaries in the L of C show that he had bank accounts in London and America!!

Actor David Morse was perfect as George Washington.
did you read the book by David McCullough? if not, I encourage you to do so. it is a fascinating book about a fascinating individual. you can look at George Washington and say the military life and what not is slightly more "exciting" (there are some great books on George Washington as well so it is not like he is forgotten), but Adams played a very crucial role in helping America claim independence and the birth of this nation.
Perhaps the motivation behind the book was to persuade us otherwise? Still waters run deep. Plain men ca be the best men.
jack johnson one minor problem though; he's much taller than the real Washington and about the same height as Lincoln.
But the fact is that Washington said no such thing. It's myth that just won't die.

I’m just going to list a bunch of fun facts about George Washington since we’re here:
George Washington would regularly walk in the streets of Philadelphia during his presidency among the people to separate the boundaries of leader and common citizen.
These are great and very informative! Thank you
More fun facts!
If you want a great book on Washington I would suggest Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow

No, The United States is not perfect. But "in order to form a more perfect Union"
Our nation elected George Washington to start leading us there. We started with
the best and the rest is up to us.

Perfect. You people always have to bring slavery into the picture. Like we fucking get it, they were slave owners. Maybe if you did more research on Washington you would know that overtime he opposed slavery, and eventually found himself disgusted by it. But you’re not ready for that conversation, yet.
Huge thanks to the cameraman who recorded everything that happened over 200 years ago in color and good quality.

this series really does bring the famous paintings to life like no other
At 2:29, the captions say, “General, Dude, please place your left hand on the bible…” I’m going to say that that is totally accurate
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
As a proud American, this scene always brings a tear to my eye!!
Best scene in the movie. How can any American not get goosebumps? It's like being there.
Props to the crew that found a way to record all the angles and hold the footage for hundreds of years
Yet today, People want to take statues down of this man. This very man who could've been King, but chose not to.
I respect Washington but there's still no excuse for treating another human being like an animal.
He owned slaves he was a king to them
@@Cesar1492Enjoyer Washington instructed his overseers to treat enslaved people "with humanity and tenderness" when sick. Enslaved people who were less able, through injury, disability or age, were given light duties, while those too sick to work were generally, though not always, excused work while they recovered.

I find it humorous how everyone has a puzzled expression while Adams was speaking but suddenly changed from confused to joyful once Washington walked in the room. I wonder if that was based off how they felt personally towards John Adams, or rather a reflection of the lack of importance his title holds.

Did you know Washington's real hair color was red?
Ginger power.
I did!
False
And so was Thomas Jeffersons. Both of them were redheads at least when they were younger.
it's a wig
Our nation needs a true leader like him today- but we don't have one in either party- or anywhere.
This whole mini series was well casted
I bet Britain regrets not giving Washington an officers commission.
I bet they still feel the sting on losing both the Revolution and the war of 1812
The War of 1812 was really a draw. No territory changed, the main issue that caused it was resolved before it started and (if you wanna get technical) the British sort of had the upper hand of the draw because they got the White House.
Cullyn Knight just the sound of that, "they got the White House" is crazy! didn't they burn it to the ground? there is a story of the famouse painting of George Washington that dolly Madison saved from the fire.......and we still have a White House. the true guts and glory of our Nation's history is quite amazing.
im gonna dig up on that because im not so sure it was a draw. thanks for peeking (sp?) my interest.
The General who reassured the King that he'd quickly deal with America and re-annex it into the Empire boasted,"America is like an unruly Spaniel(dog),you simply slap it on the nose." But,he soon learned that if he slaps this Spaniel on the nose, he'll get his hand bitten.
Jerry Lay its such a little known piece of our history; where did you learn so much about it? I always wonder how this reads in the history books in England.....'we came, we saw, we got BEAT again by an "unruly Spaniel"!......:)
David Morse looks so much like the real George Washington. Great casting.
I can't help but feel like nobody would be able to hear John Adams speak if he was just above a whisper when giving a speech
After many years still watching this, that was the greatest moment in history .
It's quite a funny moment when everyone struggles to hear him, but it's accurate.
I keep forgetting how tall he was
I'm a direct descendant of George Washington's great grandmother. Well one of them

Dear Jesus, please God send us another George Washington ASAP. Please hurry before it's too late dear Lord. God bless George Washington and God bless the United States of America. Amen!

While I think we all want a Washington. The political climate and word stage needs a man like Donald Trump.

All comments aside- this made this old Marine crack a smile in pride. Love that line- “FINALLY! Finally…”. That touched me.
It’s crazy how they got this all on film.
It was the only time in American history where we had a President, a unified nation and one political party. Now what we have today is tantamount to two entirely different countries living on one landmass. Democrats and Republicans are no longer the same people it feels like. Republicans want to retain the way America was supposed to be by the founders and they should. Democrats believe the country should be radically changed and the constitution is up to interpretation. Which is why we can no longer coexist peacefully and neighborly. How can one coexist when one side wants complete power. When Democrats don't get their way. They threaten to change the system so they can gain power (I.E Pack the supreme court, end the filibuster, federalize elections, take power from the states, etc).
Neither party is your friend.
The nation wasn't unified. Loyalists still existed amongst the public they just weren't going around shooting at people.
"When democrats can't get their way..."
How many democrats stormed the Capitol again?
@@Rob774 I'll do you one better. Democrats, far left radicals bombed the capitol in November of 1983. In which the ring leader Susan Rosenberg is a cofounder of Black Lives Matter. So whos the real terrorists here? Got anything else to say?

When King George III was told that all General Washington wished to do after vanquishing the English Armies was to return to his farm, he was shocked.
