      Kevin Zhang Before the Constitution was written, they sat in a room and discussed different types governments to choose for the new nation. Monarchy was put on the table, but was knocked down. Washington himself could’ve been literal king and even a figurative “King” if he wanted. It’s history.

      David Dyer “Richest” is a bit of a stretch. There were many that were wealthier than him, but yes, he was quite wealthy.
      I meant a life of grandeur as is power and position as well as wealth and luxury.
      In the words of Tywin Lannister, he had the opportunity to establish a dynasty that would last a thousand years!
      And yet, he denied it. Probably for the best, however.

    Washington astounded the European powers--twice. First, when he surrendered the command of the continental army, and did NOT seize power as a military dictator (as he could have easily) and secondly, when he resigned from office after his second term (there were no limits at the time). The peaceful transference of power without the death of a monarch was a concept beyond their experience at the time.

      Thomas Dixon, you see, here in the U.K., because we never had anyone like George Washington, our Democracy formed more... roughly from our past. The position of Prime Minister didn’t really have a hard beginning, it just emerged slowly. We never got the chance to suddenly decide our Democratic ways in such a short time as you did, so you’ll find them to be more traditional. Our Prime Ministers, as an example, don’t have a limit to how many terms they get, and as a result, after 3 terms (each term is 5 years) in office, some get a little silly. I do think that the US political system (not the method of voting though, I still favour our British method in that sense) is a very clever system, certainly better than our British one.

      Washington was a very good man, and not many people truly know much about him. He was the first president and is easily eclipsed by legends that came later like Lincoln, FDR, Reagan, etc. He was a private man and a peaceful man, although some speculate that he played dirty and even told lies, against the popular belief, to win independence... but I like to have a founder that was this way. Not a showboat or a king or emperor, but an honest and just soul that wanted to do the right thing.

    Some tried to make him "King." He said, "I didn't fight a war to replace one King George with another." America certainly isn't perfect, but most countries don't have a heritage like this. The most freedom loving people in the world.

    When, at 3:36, he says "So help me God." and the camera cuts to John Adams, I honestly had tears in my eyes. When Adams, a brilliant but arrogant man, fully realizes not only the importance of the moment, but sees truly for the first time the great man that George Washington was, it is a superb bit of acting and directing.
    This scene depicts one of the greatest and most important moments of the entire millennium, and it seems that all involved understood its importance. Just awesome.

      Colonel Washington was a "chancer". His diaries in the L of C show that he had bank accounts in London and America!!

      @@robertwilkinson2889 most wealthy people of the colonial Era had banking and credit accounts in London. Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, etc all had dealings with British banks. Even during the Revolution the US didn’t have its own currency, and when it did start printing “Continentals” they were virtually worthless and had no real backing by the Congress. It wasn’t until spring of 1781 that the states actually became United by ratification of the Articles of Confederacy, which ironically was the year that the “continental” was removed from circulation because its value was all but vanished. It wasn’t until 1792, if I’m not mistaken, that an official, government backed currency, the dollar, was created. Up until that time the US used an odd mixture of Spanish Pieces of Eight, the French Livre, and the British Pound Sterling. These were the currencies most likely to be found in circulation before, during, and for several years after the American Revolution.So it was not uncommon at all for a person of means during the Revolution to have accounts in foreign banks, with English banks being preferred.

      I just saw this for the first time, and it was chilling. I literally and instantly 'felt' the "brilliant but arrogant" John Adams and equally felt the change in him when he realized what was happening. Yes, indeed, superb acting and directing. I even said to myself, "What's up with John Adams? He's ticked off about something?" and then I understood the incredible scene in front of me. Just amazing. Wow! Generations of us wish we could have had this kind of input in our school days. But, well, you know, we didn't, unfortunately.

      did you read the book by David McCullough? if not, I encourage you to do so. it is a fascinating book about a fascinating individual. you can look at George Washington and say the military life and what not is slightly more "exciting" (there are some great books on George Washington as well so it is not like he is forgotten), but Adams played a very crucial role in helping America claim independence and the birth of this nation. Sadly, Adams contributions are not always remembered and it is a damn shame. that is why it is great David wrote the book and they even turned it into a miniseries. don't get me wrong, I am all for a Washington miniseries, but the fact you don't think John Adams was interesting enough or special enough, shows you truly don't know his life and how important he was to this nation (Adams might not have been military, but he had an exciting life of his own). Adams may not have been poor but he was not necessarily born fabulously wealthy either. he struggled somewhat establishing his practice. he wanted to prove himself his entire life but often found himself falling somewhat short compared to guys like Washington and Jefferson (though again in reality, was still indeed such a crucial figure in history). I am not taking anything away from Washington, but Adams . Like I said, if you haven't read the book yet, I really encourage you to do so. McCullough is one of my favorite historians and I think you will appreciate (at least more) the truly great man Adams was and his contribution to American history

      +ninjast4r So your idea of writing an accurate story, warts and all, is to include motives which you have attributed to his actions without any evidence, your opinion on his handling of the war despite your lack of perspective, and of course your unsubstantiated insight into his character. Sounds like you tried really hard to use critical thinking but got lost in your own imagination.

    Fun fact: The few words George Washington adds at the end of his inauguration-“so help me God”, was not expected by anyone. It wasn’t the words he was requested to repeat. Many believe he’d added that last part, as he’d prayed God would watch over him, and guide him as the first President of the United States, in faithfully, and justly running the young nation. Such goes the line, “In God trust”.

They wrote the constitution like a starwars intro because they knew dope stuff was going to go down long after they got the job done. The preamble to the constitution is very short and straight to the point and excplicitly states that they were establishing the constitution like a glue to hold the future nation together in order to aquire blessings. Blessings can only come from god. Thats what a constitution is. Even the mayflower compact. The europeans sent columbus to find india and he thought he was in india but it wasnt so people figured this out and they went to try to see who was going to win in the great knew world and it was spain uk the french battling witu native american warefare etc. The mayflower was many if the first ships bmit was THE ONE that everyone learns in public education unless your teacher does meth. The mayflower memebers signed a compact before they left because there was immemse danger they wouodnt make it and would die. Many did even when they settled their tow. Didnt make it. Jamestown was a notable one. The first thing their compact mensions right before they left was god: In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, defender of the Faith, etc.:
      Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, and advancements of the Christian faith, and the honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia; do by these presents, solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one another; covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic; for our better ordering, and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience.
      In witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the 11th of November, in the year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth, 1620.
      These are clearly people who know jesus is the God but they say they dread king james and they were leaving to advance the christian faith and found the contsitution of the knew world. The famous "liberty or death!" By patrick henry before georhe washington lead the militia agaiamt the redcoats explicitly mensions god. The declaration of independance was written by toimas jefferson who was george washingtons 1st secretary of state in usa ever and also 3rd president in the very beggining of the declaration explicitly states "When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."
      So congradulations you failed american history and reading comprehension. Our natioms history is 100% founded upon men calling onto God before venturing into a great unknown abyss. Every time they did it wild stuff happened right after. The mayflower landed at plymouth and they broke bread witu the native people and they were allies they advanced them ahead countless ages and helped them defeat tribes waring agaisnt them and they had to fight for every inch. The mayflower and these type voyages were of the most daring of their times. There wasnt ibuprohen. It was called the poop deck and someone had to scrub it. Thr king of england was trying to get prople to bow to him and instead georhe washington bowed himself to them instead and everything changed. They didnt get on the mayflower to proclaim athiesm. The declaration of independance of usa was not written by athiests. It was clearly written by a man named thomas jefferson who read his bible beforehand. God is ome of the first things he mentions. Whe writimg it God was at the top of his mind. Whatever you believe athiesm agnostism bhuddism hindusim communism socialism it doesnt matter because thats just the facts man. They saw the navel vessels amd they proclaimed liberty or desth from the front steps of the church in richmond virginia.

    Even though Adams was undoubtedly bitter about the outcome of the election, I can still imagine him getting a bit teary for the occasion. It was the culmination of a lifetime's worth of struggle and sacrifice.

    I’m just going to list a bunch of fun facts about George Washington since we’re here:
    George Washington would regularly walk in the streets of Philadelphia during his presidency among the people to separate the boundaries of leader and common citizen.
    George Washington was extremely peculiar in his body language and enjoyed being in control of himself, meaning he hated being touched and small talk.
    George Washington encouraged his subordinates to criticize him.
    George Washington donated thousands of dollars of his own money to the creation of the first Jewish and Catholic churches in the U.S., being a strong advocate for religious tolerance and the freedom to worship. He also allowed his slaves to freely practice their own religions on Mount Vernon.
    George Washington was 6 foot 4, towering over his men in the field of battle.
    George Washington never wore a wig, he powdered his hair white and even put a covering in his collar so that the powder didn’t stick to his shirt.
    George Washington aimed to establish a peaceful coexistence with the Native American peoples, signing the Pickering Treaty in 1794 in hopes that his countrymen would respect the boundaries and cultures of the indigenous Indians after his death (unfortunately this would not last).
    George Washington was the first to sign the Constitution of the United States.
    George Washington was proclaimed to be one of the greatest military strategists in history by Prussian Kaiser Fredrick Wilhelm II.
    George Washington commanded a desegregated army to the extent where a quarter of his northern force was comprised of African Americans fighting for their freedom.
    George Washington envisioned the U.S. as an asylum for all people of the world to live in, openly expressing his support for foreign immigration.
    George Washington was a Freemason.
    George Washington wore civilian clothing during his presidency, an act that appalled the European monarchs who always dressed in military honors, dresses, or other royal clothing that costed more than a suburban house.
    George Washington was given the key to the Bastille by the French revolutionary government, it can be found in Mount Vernon on display.
    George Washington despised holding power, repeatedly stating how he would rather be in his grave than be proclaimed emperor of the world.
    George Washington was posthumously promoted to General of the Armies in 1976, a six-star rank, by means to secure that he would not be outranked by any future military personnel.
    George Washington’s face was plastered everywhere in the young nation during his presidency and especially after his death. Think North Korea and China except the people actually _want_ his face in their house.
    George Washington stopped a potential coup d’etat against the Second Continental Congress, which would have granted him full power over the government as a despot.
    George Washington regularly exposed himself to enemy fire, most famously during the Seven Years’ War when French and native soldiers were firing at his soldiers in all directions in a forest. Washington led his men out of the battle, his clothes covered in bullet holes but not a single wound on him. One of the French-aligned natives who was present even approached Washington after his inauguration, congratulating him and telling the President that he had fired at him point-blank during the battle several times and missed all of the shots, convincing the native warrior that Washington was protected by the gods.
    George Washington is the only slave-owning president who freed all of his slaves. The ideal cause of the Revolution caused him to question the morality of chattel slavery and by the 1780’s and 90’s, he openly stated how he no longer wanted to own people, participate in the slave trade, or separate families, even supporting policies of gradual emancipation and putting an end to the Atlantic slave trade. He even stated that all of his slaves were to be given proper education to pursue respectable fields of work and his estate would provide housing for the elderly.
    After his death, then-First Council Napoleon Bonaparte held a personal eulogy praising George Washington and ordered all of France to hold ten days of mourning, even the British Royal Navy flew their flags at half-staff upon learning the news.

      More fun facts! George Washington loved animals, but despised riding horses. He dearly loved his mules and was very overprotective of them, leaving a long list of instructions to his servants on how to take care of them. He considered mules to be the superior equine mount (and at this time, they were considered a king's mount) because they are far braver and sure-footed than horses. In fact, it was illegal to export a mule from Spain (where the best mules are bred) without the king's consent.
      He also gave his animals silly names - he had dogs named Sweetlips, Drunkard and Madame Moose. And when he finally received a mule as a gift from the king of Spain, he named it Royal Gift.

      @@martinh1309 Not just somebody - Frederick the Great. A man who is considered objectively to be one of the greatest military tacticians of his age and maybe of all time.
      I don't know if the claim regarding his opinion of Washington is true, I'll look into it later, but this by no means would be a small compliment.

      The nation did not elect George Washington. There was no campaign, no ballot boxes or anything that would be recognizable today. He was elected by the electors of the Electoral College. In 1789 only 10 of 13 States sent electors, but they were unanimous in their vote for Washington. This was a body of men that were chosen in some cases by the people of their respective states, but in nine states these electors were chosen by the state legislatures. The first election that would be recognizable today was in 1824. As time has passed, the electoral college has become subject to what is known as the "winner takes all" system. The population of each state vicariously elects the President. Each state has a corresponding number of electors in the electoral college. The candidate with the majority of votes essentially wins the state. Then the electors must cast their votes in accordance with their state's outcome. However, this outcome hardly resembles the actual voting of each American citizen. Thus, each election shows a certain preference by the population, but the people do not directly elect the President. This is why the number of Electoral College votes trump the popular vote. Hence, it has always been in the hands of a privileged body of electors far removed from the population.

      It's really cool, most picture identical Washington I think made so far.

    What I love is that even though Adams is the main subject of the miniseries, the show doesn't shy away from presenting his flaws. He's vainglorious and self-important in the opening here--he's a very real person. But at the same time, you see as the scene progresses, a man passionately devoted to the country, and as inspired by Washington as any American. He's both principled and petty--a delicate balance to strike.

    All that hesitancy at the beginning, with VP Adams expressing his bewilderment of the moment, almost wondering why he was even there, not sure of what to do next, made *me* wonder what was supposed to happen next. Giamatti played his part so well. Washington motioned Adams to proceed ahead of him to the platform, then Adams stopped himself and allowed Washington to go first. Perfect. It was an age of manners, courtesy, and propriety. This was such a great series. It's grievous that too few Americans know anything about this.

    Probably the most accurate depiction of this event. Even Washington's soft tone is right, many people complained they could barely hear him when he gave a speech, mostly because of the constant trouble he had with his teeth. The building is still there in lower Manhattan, Federal Hall on Wall Street, right across the street from the JP Morgan Bank and about a hundred yards from the New York Stock Exchange.

      Cullyn Knight It was not a draw. The British attempted an invasion of the United States and they were thwarted. That means the United States won because they achieved their own goal of stopping the invasion. The British burned the White House inside a city which had been evacuated before their arrival. There was no real political gain there because they simply burned an empty building.They didn't capture the President and the Congress which was their goal in taking Washington,DC. The General who reassured the King that he'd quickly deal with America and re-annex it into the Empire boasted,"America is like an unruly Spaniel(dog),you simply slap it on the nose." But,he soon learned that if he slaps this Spaniel on the nose, he'll get his hand bitten.

    It's quite a funny moment when everyone struggles to hear him, but it's accurate. Not only were there no microphones etc. at the time but Washington actually didn't have the deep, commanding voice he's sometimes depicted as having in films/TV shows. The guy wore heavy dentures and suffered from life threatening lung diseases as a child, not to mention he didn't like to open his mouth too much due to his remaining rotting teeth. I doubt he was even capable of amplifying his voice above a certain volume. Still, the guy's eloquence and leadership were enough to inspire respect.

    It was the only time in American history where we had a President, a unified nation and one political party. Now what we have today is tantamount to two entirely different countries living on one landmass. Democrats and Republicans are no longer the same people it feels like. Republicans want to retain the way America was supposed to be by the founders and they should. Democrats believe the country should be radically changed and the constitution is up to interpretation. Which is why we can no longer coexist peacefully and neighborly. How can one coexist when one side wants complete power. When Democrats don't get their way. They threaten to change the system so they can gain power (I.E Pack the supreme court, end the filibuster, federalize elections, take power from the states, etc).

    Most of those people had never seen Washington before. There was no photography. Only paintings or cartoons. Yet they all knew who he was.
