Goodbye, Blue Lagoon parking lot. It's astounding how much work has been done to protect this entire area from the lava flows. Fantastic footage and music, as always!
Since lagoon tourist money is a national security matter or at least gets treated like it is critical infrastructure, roads and accommodations will get rebuilt ASAP. Maybe they'll borrow one of Elon's boring machines and build tunnels to bypass lava flows.
The lava flow barriers are not only to protect the Blue Lagoon and its economically important tourist destination, but also to protect the adjacent Svartsengi power plant that supplies most of the energy (heat and electricity) for a large part of the Reykjanes Peninsula.
@@ericfielding2540 The power station is over 40 years old and the average lifetime of a geothermal power station is 40 years. They should build a new one at a safer location instead of replacing the old power plants with new ones at the same location. Soon or later the lava will overflow the barriers, because there's a limit how high you can make these walls.
I've driven that road from Blue Lagoon down to Grindavik... Seeing that lava field there just overwhelming the road and valley just breaks my heart. I'm glad we were there and saw the sights we did, and I hope all the best for the residents there. At least the walls are holding... for now.
what's wonderful about being human, is we can heal and move forward and build better and wiser from lessons learned here. May we grow into our compassion for each other more than the places we enjoy for ourselves.
The Blue Lagoon is in Grindavik as well. I stayed at the North Lights Inn which is a short walk from Blue Lagoon. The landscape is like Mars. It’s amazing. I hope the main town is able to survive this eruption.
Thanks, just seeing how beautiful and raw looking the landscape of Iceland makes me realize how little control we have over our surroundings, and how fast they can change in an instant! Thanks again!
For me as a stranger, in the first line this are excellent images and views. I hope, everybody stay´s save and I mean this for residents of Grindavik and their property too.
Fascinating aerial videos, as always. So interesting. Thanks for your hard work and obvious passion. It sets you apart from most other Icelandic volcano watchers.
I did not realise how close the eruption is to the power plant. Nothing majestic about a volcano when you can see what it is destroying. I pray the barriers hold. Thank you Gylfie
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Majestic is defined as beautiful, powerful or causing great admiration and respect. So, from my perspective claiming that something is no longer majestic just because it destroys something is not logical The lava fountains are beautiful, powerful and definitely command respect. I would say the same thing about tornadoes as another ex.
What ypu aren't seeing tho is that volcanic system made the lagoon and makes the power plant even possible. It made it, it'll certainly take it away at some point
I stayed at the Blue Lagoon back in 2011 and drove the road to Grindavik. Amazing to see how the lava has changed the landscape in the area. Amazing drone footage.
EXCELLENT footage showing the relationship of the lava to Blue Lagoon, Grindavik, power plant and the ocean! Helps to orient the impact of eruption in Iceland.

I love the way you filmed and edited this piece. Your work is great, man. This part of aiceland is very familiar to me. Amazing and haunting to see how a landscape you know so well is changing every day.
@@StarfireReborn no missed connection at all. but all the advertising CONVENIENTLY leaves out the powerplant nearby. but, hey, i love being lulled to sleep by the drone of turbines.
Difficult to find adequate words that have not already been used in acknowledging your work. Great as always. Thanks for taking the effort and for sharing ❤
I was just there 2 weeks ago! The drive in using a detour road passing right beside Grindavik was a highlight of the trip. We have lava steam on both sides of our vehicle. Amazing roadwork, berms to try to keep the lava at bay. Drones are also amazing. They are changing how the world operates and I love it.
i visited Grindavik, about 2 days before everything began in summer 2023 , never forget that maybe some´thing i saw is no longer as it was. Thanks for updates.
You videos are second to none...I bet you could even make just a plain old paper towel roll sound outstanding...lol...but know that your work is greatly appreciated...God bless...
Thank you so much for that great aerial view. Two huge craters are not very far from the Blue Lagoon. I can't believe how much of the main road to the Grindavik was taken out. Looks like more lave crept underneath one of the protective walls. It really gives you a good sense of how close everything is.
Thank you Gylfi, very excellent drone footage, Mother Nature can be cruel and nothing will stand in her way. Let’s Hope that the Blue Lagoon is not part of this current eruption 🙏 Thank you for sharing your content it is always good to hear how Iceland is going, take care and God Bless you Gylfi 🙏👍😇🇮🇸
The Island is ever evolving, as stark and harsh as this all is, it is how it became to exist. I made my first visit to Iceland for my birthday last year. Blue Lagoon, Aurora, Geysers, Glacier ski-mobil, all ticked off during our short stay. It is an unforgiving but beautiful country. Part of me feels attached to it off just one visit. After the initial culture shock, it became am experience I'll not forget. Ever!
This is truly awe-inspiring, even when seen through a camera lens. Thanks Gylfi. 🙂👍Nature will take its course. If anything which man has built in this area survives this sequence of eruptions, I'll be amazed.
In 2022 my aunt invited me to share her 50th birthday splurge to herself and spend a weekend at the fancy Retreat part of the Blue Lagoon. She booked a room with its own little lagoon. While we were taking a dip, a drone flew over us and stopped. We stared at it for a bit and it seemed like whoever was manning the camera slowly backed up and flew away, almost like “Oops- excuse me!” I have to wonder- was it you?? The spa was very posh, but the part of the trip I remember most was hiking to the top of Thorbjorn. I’ve looked back at the photos I took of my aunt and I with Grindavik behind us over and over these past few months. It’s surreal that landscape is now covered in fresh lava, and changes month by month. I can see the route of our little hike in Nov 2022 in all your aerial shots. Having been there fairly recently makes this whole unfolding situation feel so immediate to me even though I was only in Iceland for about 72 hours. I’d love to go back and spend more time exploring- Iceland is unique and awe-inspiring.
Hi Gylfi - It's June 17th. Happy Independence Day!! Love your videos and seeing the changes from when i was there at the Keflavik NATO base from 1966-1967. Enjoyed your talk with Shawn Willsey. I took courses in volcanoes & earthquakes in college. Was fascinating to see your country after my courses. It was amazing to see what the country was doing even back then with hot water & steam. Had always hoped to get back but health not up to it anymore. Stay safe. I gave up trying to fly a drone. You're great at it. Leanna, Ohio, USA.
Thank you so much Leanna, I get many visitors here from the base and it's on my plan to do some filming there, like 360 video from the top of my car since the area has changes a whole lot :) Just been so busy doing the volcano-thing :) but hope to do it since I see so many of you around :) But it's lots of flying around still to be uploaded so I hope you enjoy to travel with me :)
