So many people to thank today. First, I think, is Amanda Jo for staying on top of things so we had real-time notification of the eruption. Hope your doctor's appointment went well and you're in the pink of health. Next Shawn, for jumping right on this and giving us his scientific insight. Johann, thanks again. Looking forward to tomorrow's flight. Bruce for his, as usual, stellar analysis and graphics. Props to the mods to being available at such short notice. Blows my mind that one of you is doing this from NZ! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks Shawn for the update and for the live drone flight earlier this morning. Really appreciate all you do for us. Love Bruce’s graphs too. You are the best. Have a good day.
That little building that burned at the Blue Lagoon was a bus warming hut for guests. It's crazy that building is gone. I was standing in it last week.
Really appreciate the overlays of the lava fields at 3:20 for the different eruptions. Peli hair is fascinating too. Would not like to be caught in downfall of this glass. Thank you Shawn and all.
The data graphed by Bruce Garner are in reality, not fabulous! Fabulous means "full of fable" or untrue. The graphs are true and facilitate the quick comprehension of the series of eruptions, Thanks.
@ easy there, Robert. I meant no insult, only praise. Maybe I should have said Fantastic - nope, might imply fantasy. How about Unbelievable - nope, might imply untrue. How about I appreciate his work and the illustrations are easy to follow and see the trends. Jeez.
Love the volcanology & geophysics! More thanks to you, DrShawn & a Huge thanks also to Bruce! I love the graphs & the analysis, projections, predictions- Keep 'em coming please!
Many thanks again Shawn and Amanda Jo. So interesting. The drone flight was fascinating, but these sessions give me more information. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Shawn and Amanda Jo. Some of those videos of the lava consuming the parking lot area really amazing. Just shows the power of nature. Humans can do amazing things and can do things on scale with so many of us on the planet but only our nuclear weapons can work at the scale Mother Nature does.
Since this was published the lava now hitting the berm on the road to Blue lagoon...gonna be close..hopefully there is enough downhill from there to keep the buildup to a minimum.
Excellent presentation as always, Shawn and Amanda Jo! Very much looking forward to a future discussion on how this eruption sort of 'broke the mold' in terms of duration of inter-eruptive inflation and gradually increasing seismic activity. Seems like it took everyone by surprise!
Yesterday was fun! It was thrilling to be there at the start. This ongoing drama of the building of a land mass is much more instructive than reading cold, dead words on a page.
Another excellent update! Thank you for your time, dedication and expertise, Shawn :) Many thanks to Amanda Jo and to Bruce Garner (love his charts, very helpful :)
Man.. if they hadn't filled that hole in the berm as soon as the eruption started they would be in deep trouble. Good work everyone involved. Department of Eruption Preparedness is doing their job.❤🔥Thanks for the comprehensive update!!
Called it pretty close! Looked like it might go around Thanksgiving. Noticed on the uplift data that the peaks between eruptions were getting smaller and getting to a point where it would erupt at about the same uplift point.
The playing field is changing rapidly now. We have a very established ridge where the fissures are happening, and now it is simply a slight difference of 1 or 2 degrees in the fissure orientation, or a shift of 50M east or west which really determines where the bulk of the lava goes. Such a major difference between the north flow going west and the south flow going east as the fissures cross the established ridge. Also the difference that the 20M or so in elevation of the source at the ridge makes in the velocity of the initial flows and how that inertia plays out downsream. That northern river is still booking along 3-4KM from the source, which shows how the difference in the temperature of the ground makes in keeping the temp high and the viscosity low further from the source. This eruptive cycle is definitely still on the steep upslope of the learning curve. Curious if we will again see a late eruption to the north like last time. What a great time to be retired. ;-)
14:50 There are still cars driving at the entrance of the parking area on the left. For sure, it are emergency cars or fire fighters or whatever. Brave, guys. Thank you for your interesting overview Have a nice day 👋🏻👴🏼
A comment on the sound. It sounds like you have your voice is being duplicated two times with a few milliseconds of delay which causes the kind of phasey effect. The cause might be because you are probably sending the microphone sound both directly and also thru some other thing, maybe your video mixer software?
I pulled a screen shot from Isak’s stream earlier and I have no doubt that the Blue Lagoon would be under lava by now. Yeah for the berms. We will see how high they go.
Wow! What will be done about the parking lot? I suppose it will have to be moved at least until the lava has cooled. Maybe they will use shuttle buses. Thanks for this update Shawn, Mandie Jo, and Bruce.
It was a full moon a few days ago, the extra stress on the subsurface could be the trigger for the eruption, there have been many coincidental eruptions since the start (not always, but a lot). Thoroughly enjoy your channel.
"Full moon tidal stresses" on lava are minimal. Tectonic plate movement creates far more stress; or, in this case, relieves the stress. The North American and Eurasian plates are pulling apart, allowing the magma to rise through the opening cracks. The lava pressure is only great relative to us little people.
Priorities and second guessing the flow me thinks parking lot most dispensible. Those berms are very hard wk with BIG equipment. That not dirt down there that is Old hard lava.
I seem to recall that when they were originally planning the berms, it was said that the carpark was high enough to avoid inundation and by not including it in the berm perimeter saved a lot of resources… how things change, with the new topography
The berms are still holding Only thing we worry about is the power plant The berms are still holding and machines are working on some of the berm area.
thanks for the update; enjoyed the live video as well. do you own any of Pele's hair?1 what a cool thing I've never heard of. How close can observers get to the area??
I went to go to watch 'Live in Iceland' and they are no longer live? I have been away for a month or two, so I have no idea what has happened. Are they ok?
I've been away too, so I missed it when it happened. Shawn mentioned the other day that whoever used to run that couldn't keep it going anymore. They had hoped the Met or someone else might take over their cameras & such, but that hasn't happened. As for what prompted the shutdown, I don't know. It's definitely a loss to the community, though. Their cameras were very well-placed. I'm surprised no one has taken over those locations, if not the cameras themselves.
The site was down, but it looks like it is being rebuilt Some feeds are now back online (Vogastapi is live) ~ placeholders are in place for other webcams

Hi Shawn. Just letting you know that the audio sounds a bit weird, this is likely because you're recording from more than one microphone simultaneously. Otherwise, excellent video as usual!
Mountain View, California here. Thank you again, as usual, for the detailed geologic assessment. QUESTION: Noting the small magnitude and number of earthquakes during the current eruption, does this mean that the fissure now does not have much resistance to uplift, and the magma has an easier time getting to the surface?
It would seem that the longer the magma sits quietly underneath the surface, the less likely it would cause earthquakes when continuing its emergence because the dykes and fissures may have already have been formed during the initial quakes and are thus already filled with magma and ready to be pushed without thunderous activity above the surface in what can realistically be considered a continuous event from the initial eruptions/quakes until now.
so, let me get this straight... you turn on the tap to get the lava flowing and then , by pure coincidence, have flighst already booked for a vacation in Iceland ? 🙂 BTW, there was a video of an iceland air flight landing from the south (so right side of plane got perfect few of the still young eruption) last night. Better views than the helicopter ones ! BTW, what is the time period bettween e-ruptions? They are called inter-ruptions 🙂
Wonder if Blue Lagoon losing half of its parking space to lava will delay its re-opening. I bet they will just put some rocks and sand on top of the lava once it has cooled down enough to drive over it, put a fresh asphalt coat on it, re-open and pretend nothing happened. NVM about half the parking, wrote that before seeing the later pictures. Completely gone. Still betting on the lagoon re-opening as soon as the lava has cooled down enough to pave over it though.
After viewing these various Icelandic eruptions you've shared with us, what you perceive to be the potential geological changes? Is this cycle of magna movement a part of mountain and lake building in a flash of geological time?

Wow! That lava is nonvintage fast!!!
Reykjavik, Iceland here. I live downtown in Breholdt. We are safe and everyone is fine so far. Thankfully this happens away from the main city areas.
Hope you can enjoy the view without being overly stressed. Stay safe.

Great coverage! Thank you for this update and everything you're doing to keep us informed.

Yes, cool, never heard of that before.
Geology is so awesome. Thanks Shawn!
Yep, I always tell people that Astronomy is stellar, but Geology rocks!
@mindcraftyD13 I used to live in the Sierra Nevada. More visible geology there than anywhere in the country. Just my opinion 😊

Audio sounds weird. Sounds like as if you're recording with 2 mic's at the same time. Or maybe too low bitrate.
Thanks again! The Pele’s hair was great, never seen a picture of it before.
Thank you Shawn and AmandaJo. You've answered all my questions plus ❤️✌️👍

In your next update, can you explain how an earthquake can have a negative magnitude?
These data are presented on a log scale.
www.src.com.au/negative-magnitude-earthquakes/?fbclid=IwAR0QJWMXG2zupVml16ZOT0907eiuOVEg4_3Ursgl7fGjNFhy8zhujT9G2Jo

Di…Cumbria.
The charts by Bruce Garner, are stunning and so comprehensible
Is it possible that plate tectonic movement is opening a gap for the magma? Are there any up-to-date maps available to the public?
Not only possible, that IS what's happening.
14:43 Getting pretty damned close to the lava flow!
I saw the Lagoon parking lot is nearly gone and a building burned.
so, let me get this straight... you turn on the tap to get the lava flowing and then , by pure coincidence, have flighst already booked for a vacation in Iceland ? 🙂 BTW, there was a video of an iceland air flight landing from the south (so right side of plane got perfect few of the still young eruption) last night. Lagoons days are numbered as its just a matter of when.
Saw the earlier show. Not looking good for the lagoon.
