In this video, Lee Morris of Fstoppers demos the brand new NiSi Black Mist Filter set. These unique filters add a film like quality to your digital video and still photos by decreasing the contrast and increasing the halation or blooming around light sources. The Black Mist Filter can also be used to smoothen skin caused by ultra sharp digital image quality.
Throughout this tutorial series, Elia Locardi has shown some of his favorite filters and filter techniques for long exposure in his landscape photography. Wholeheartedly believe these should be used more in a controlled lighting environment as opposed to out in the field. Definitely NOT in bright sunlight (I agree) but for sure at night time to get the blooming (halation) effect. I personally went with Tiffen and the DO live on my Canon perpetually when I’m in my studio. Great short vid, guys!

In my personal experience, it "works" nicely during sunset, at night (creating halos around candles) and also indoors (where there are several light sources with different strengths).

Instead of making something more cinematic, I would say it makes it look less video-ey. It knocks off the contrast and sharpness of video by softening the hi-lights and lifting the shadows. They have been around a long time, and I used them a lot before the digital era and Photoshop. We would even stretch black panty hose over a filter holder or UV filter, they would also come as "cutters" for your lens to give that vignette look in camera.

From what you showed, I agree with your assessment. They were quite impressive in the indoor shots. Thanks so much.

They're worth it for the bloom alone IMO. Much more natural than any post-process bloom.

Film, unlike digital, has much more information in the highlights and can handle much more exposure before clipping than digital with the disadvantage of being prone to muddy and lost shadows. If you look at the tests you've shot outside, you can see how the light that's hitting your forehead isn't clipped as much with a much nicer roll off into 100% white (same goes for the shot where you're looking directly into the studio light).
You can get the best of both world of using this filter by simply lowering the blacks again in post (although you will still have more flare and less sharpness which can be good if used with taste)

I was talking about the “cinematic look” last night with my wife. How do they get so much detail in the dark shadows and have perfect lighting on the subjects? Great review!

Well, I made mist filters of various kinds using clear acetate sheets using a lens holder during my film days before Photoshop. For smiles, I took my extra 82mm UV filter (cheap one from Amazon) and sprinked a bit of enriched flour on the UV filter and with an artist brushed with a near even, but very light coat. More flour-more diffusion. And it worked just as well as the $109 NiSi and made the lights glow on the softened image as a simple DIY without cost. Of course there are photo apps that can add glow, like the Orton Effect, and other diffusion effects are helpful in portraits and landscape photography. Oh yes, a little glass cleaner cleans the flour dusting until the next time.

Thank you for explaning I really appreciated! ☺ I have a question for you, thank you in advance for answring... I would like to use the lens Sony 24-105mm on my Sony A7IV, then I would like to apply a Nisi Black Mist on it, and on the black mist I’d like to put the ND64 6stops + CPL integrated filter by Nisi. Will I make a mess of my photos and videos? Would this be a bad choice to make? Is the 24-105mm G really less sharp, bidimensional, sad looking and not good in night, low light or indoors situations? Cause my intention is to get a tridimensional, cinematic looking on my photos and videos.

The 1/8 black mist works really nicely and is always on my cameras, however this is only in my studio where I shoot podcasts, so the lighting is controlled.

I dunno... 1) Seems like you could do that by adjusting levels in post, or with lighting. 2) I wonder if it would produce an cool effect on an anamorphic lens.

2:50 That's because 1 you aren't meant to use these filters at this 50deg backlight angle on people at 12pm.
2 you can always just increase your black levels to undo the contrast.
You can't just throw a filter on that changes how light looks and shoot the same way. Learn the filter

Indoor shot just lower contrast on your grade and get the same result as I did test before, it does not loose any sharpness it just lower the contrast footage

At night outside they work well, but ya, broad daylight they don’t really do anything. Night streetlights and signage are where its at. take these to HK or Tokyo at night!

You can buy a cheap clear filter and use a subtle mist of hairspray. similar results.

Old trick. You piss on your lens and let it dry. It surely looks more cinematic.
Even their 1/4 effect is too strong on the eye. Let's wait for the 1/8.

    • @Fedorevsky
      @Fedorevsky 2 года назад

I've had the their 1/8 for a good while now. A year or so. I usually only use the 1/4 for very wide lenses 18mm and below.
