So many people said that Lars is a suck drummer but he had been an inspire to many new metal bands.Ask a drummer in every rock or metal band the first name they will mention is no other if not Lars Ulrich of Metallica. And the unique thing about him is,he remove his ride cymbal long ago from the drums for he hate the bell sound effect and go for a washy crash/ride cymbal sound that resembled the band's signature and trademark. His drums part especially the fills were also memorable and some were easy to play by beginners plus more simplicity added into the song that is really helpful for every newbie drummers.
It's not the same kit. The Justice kit was Granstar in a gray metallic color. The black album tour was a white Artstar 2 with Granstar lugs and different sizes.
I actually like this kit. Even though it's simplified compared to his older kits, it still had a great sound range. Having a ride was a massive bonus, and I'm pretty sure there was a splash symbol on it at one point if the studio version of The Outlaw Torn is indicative (Edit: I just found out that this wasn't a studio kit). Does anyone know if he had a china on this kit? I don't think that I see one. I really wish Lars went back to this kit because his sound dynamics live have been a bit lackluster with his current kit. That and I'm tired of hearing the china in place of the ride on some of Metallica's older songs.
That's a TAMA Starclassic Birch Silver Sparkle set, the one that Lars used was a Starclassic Maple. The Maple was much more expensive than the Birch set.
Thats Lars kit. Its on display at guitar center in San francisco. Thats where I filmed it. Im pretty sure Tama would have him in a maple kit. I think the notes n the kit say maple as well.
It actually doesnt say maple on the plaque. So im not sure of the wood. I did read where Lars old tech Flemming said they used a wrapped finish for the silver sparkle ones, and lacquered for the green sparkle kit from St.Anger tour, and Magnetic Orange finish for the Death Magnetic tour.
same badge that they used on the SC Birch, but these are indeed Maples. Tama prided themselves on making Starclassic’s lacquer finishes and any wrap finish they did would come fitted with a metal badge like these ones. this kit is first gen and within the first 2 years of the Starclassic debut so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if they just threw the SC birch badges on this wrap kit. and it’s also not the first time Lars has had a kit special made for him. the Damaged Justice kit is a Granstar Custom with the all silver badges and thinner shells. finish was custom painted at a drum shop too! not the “Gun Metal Grey” finish everyone attributes it as in all the forums
@@mattlovesdrums69 Isn’t the white kit actually Artstar Maples with the Granstar lugs? The Maple shells were always thinner than the Birch shells. I have an Artwood snare from 1988 and it’s a 9mm Birch shell which is the same specs as the the bass drums and toms in the Granstar line.
Matt, I think you're partially wrong with that. Seems like if I recall correctly, he did use the 2 kicks from his green Starclassic touring kit later on in the studio for a while.
@@KB-th9jm The only time I remember him using the splash on an album was in the beginning of Unforgiven 2. He might have in other songs, I just don't recall.
Not sure as yo why. Unless they were going for a “Load” era look, when he did use a ride and splash. The last time I was in SF this drum set is still there on display, but they were stacked up and not set up.
Why? And I'm sincere about that question. Is it because Lars used to play them? As far as hard rock/heavy metal goes, it's the generic same ol same ol. Two kick drums, 2 mounted, and 2 floor toms. Though rock drummers are typically seen on that set up, it was first used by big band/Swing drummers decades earlier. That set up has been around conceptually since 1939, and Louie Bellson was recording with that standard 2 bass, 2 up, 2 down set up since the late 40's /early 50's.
@@BIGDADDYBALLZ420 Well, some music fans actually like hearing stories that involve music, so you can sit there and be quiet while the rest of us listen. That or go find something else to do that actually interests you.
So obviously many metal bands implement double bass parts in a lot of their songs. One reason you would use 2 is because it looks cooler than using a double pedal. Another is using a double pedal to play double bass parts can and does quite often have a different feel to it than using a double bass with 2 single pedals.

Agreed. The Granstar II set was legendary.

I bought two of the cymbal stands shown in this video. GC didn't know what to charge me so they came up with ten dollars over cost. Stoked
