Making a Sunflower Fairy Costume

  • I made this costume for a photography meetup. It may not have turned out quite as I had planned, but I'm still glad I finished it, and I think on the right model it could be very pretty.
To be clear: the statue of liberty is a lovely work of art and engineering, not to mention an incredibly powerful symbol...but it's not exactly the sort of thing one wants to be compared to while attempting to be light and ethereal.
Though I said I'm not thrilled with the way things turned. That doesn't mean I hate it by any means. If I truly thought this project and the photos turned out horribly, I'd do everything within my power to ensure they never saw the light of day.
If you like this costume or pictures, wonderful! That's why I share the things I make. I'm so thankful anytime my work makes someone happy or inspires them! Just because a creator doesn't feel something is good enough, doesn't mean you can't love and enjoy it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and both ways of feeling are valid.

    • Sparks - Chaël (No Cop...
    Edit:
In regards to COPPA and the FTC,
While I’ve worked hard to make my content accessible and enjoyable to a broad audience, my content is not intended for young children. I regularly use potentially hazardous tools to create art including open flames, heavy gauge wire, sharp pins & sewing needles, razor blades, as well as a sewing machine & serger. These are tools no child should be using unsupervised, and by extension, children should not be watching these videos without supervision. I’m so happy when parents tell me my videos inspired them to create art with their kids. I think arts and crafts are a wonderful way to connect people of all ages, but not all arts and crafts are appropriate for young children, and should not be attempted without attentive supervision and guidance.
My videos are not intended for children. To those that would suggest that anything relating to fantasy, magic, fairies, and angels must be created for children, I’d point out the existence of shows like Carnival Row, Game of Thrones, Lost Girl, True Blood(Spoiler: series contains fairies), Good Omens, Lucifer, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and many more, are compelling evidence to the contrary.
Additionally, according to RUclips analytics less than 5% of my audience falls in the 13-17 age range (the youngest age group RUclips analytics provides data on) and the vast majority of my audience is over 20.
Also, a little update on me: I have been going through one of the worst periods of depression I’ve experienced in quite some time. I’ve barely been able to get out of bed for the past 3 months. My mental health has all but abandoned me, my physical health is suffering, and I don’t have the means or access to seek professional help. This has contributed to the lack of updates on all of my social media platforms. However, these developments with RUclips, COPPA, and the FTC, have been less than encouraging and this very well could mean the end of my channel.
To anyone who’s enjoyed watching my videos, thank you. It’s nice to know I’ve brought people a bit of happiness.
Thank you for all of the kind and supportive comments! I hope you continue to find inspiration and happiness through creativity and art

I agree about watching videos purely for the process. I just like watching people be creative, seeing them go from idea to finished project. I watch a lot of 3D Printing, Woodturning, Bladesmithing & Glassblowing videos for this reason. No intention of ever taking up the hobby, it's just nice to see a creator create.

I honestly love your costume. It looks whimsical and earthy to me, very much like a sunflower...Also I love watching making of videos as well for kind of the same reason. I love watching the process and pieces come together. So I loved this video.

Instead of leaving, dash up to the people who told that your headpiece looked like the Statue of Liberty and skewer them with it. Its beautiful

This reminds me of my fairy headdress that I made for my wedding! I love how it reminds me of the sun shining off of my sunflowers. Thank you for sharing this really inspired outfit, I think the pictures turned out great as well.

Beautiful costume, and your headdress to me invoked more of a sun goddess vibe than a Statue of Liberty look.

as someone who also struggles with finishing things, I'm very proud of you for being able to do that. It's definitely harder than most people think. I'm not too happy with the photographer's jokes, since I can't see the "liberty statue" as much as I see radiating sun rays. The final product looks beautiful in its simplicity and you should definitely be proud of the fact that you were able to make something so creative in such a short amount of time.

But it doesnt have to be finished. You don't have to stick with mixed feelings about it. Look at it again with fresh eyes. Get back to it, see how gorgeous it is, be proud of yourself, and then think of what else you can add to it. Maybe some metallic thread. Around the machine stitching. Hiding machine made stitches really helps the whimsical look. A fairy wouldn't have a machine make her clothes, I dont think they make sewing machines that tiny :)
Add more layers girl! Take some lace and incorporate there. Maybe some chiffon. Put some acrylic paint around the stones, give them depth. You can also attach flowy strips of fabric on the sleeves on the back. Giving it that extra pair of wings look.
Great video, very inspiring. I can see that if you gave yourself chance to work on this longer and not be concerned with the aesthetics of the presentation and you turned off the camera and really allowed yourself to get as creative as you can, this thing could be on a stage right now. You got talent. And the video is great. Love song at the end.

Wow, screw those photographers. That's wildly unprofessional and just a general dick move. That crown is lovely and you did an excellent job with it.
I also love how you went through with making and posting this even though you weren't super into it. I think a lot of us need the reminder that progress is way better than perfection.
I'm super proud of you for doing all of this, and I hope you get invited to many other fairy photoshoots in the future (with better people as photographers).

What’s wrong with the Statue of Liberty? I’ll bet they meant it as a compliment. To me, the headdress gives you the look of a goddess! And I totally understand having trouble finishing things. I think your project turned out perfectly! Hope you are doing well! ❤️

what? the headdress looks like a halo, haven't those photographers seen any renaissance paintings? i bet the statue of liberty's headdress was based on a halo too.

you're lack of confidence in your creation makes me sad. I feel those ways as well sometimes but hearing you say it so often makes your video less enjoyable. I thought the photo shoot was bad a$$ and your costume was unique and creative!!!! I wanted to love the costume but you kept making me dislike it piece by piece as you made it!! you looked like a powerful goddess btw!!
