- Hey everyone, welcome to Mythology Explained. Today’s video dives into the celestial spheres of Heaven as they are depicted in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy.
Alright, let’s get into it.
The Divine Comedy is a monumental epic poem from the 14th century penned by Italian author Dante Alighieri. Comprising three components: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso, it charts an allegorical journey through the afterlife - Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven - offering reflections on human morality, sin, and absolution.
Our protagonist, Dante, finds himself astray in a gloomy forest, a metaphor for spiritual bewilderment. Guided through Hell and Purgatory by the Roman poet Virgil and later through Heaven by his beloved Beatrice, Dante's voyage examines the assorted rewards and punishments souls receive contingent on their earthly deeds and spiritual development.
In Paradiso, the last part of the poem, Dante and Beatrice journey through the nine celestial spheres of Heaven. Dante encounters various saints and scholars, exploring the nature of divine love, wisdom, and the celestial hierarchy.
The nine celestial spheres, as depicted in Dante's Divine Comedy, represent a hierarchical structure of Heaven based on the Christian cosmology and the teachings of the Catholic Church. Each sphere is associated with a celestial body (such as the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the Fixed Stars, and the Primum Mobile).
The structure of the spheres is such that it reflects the spiritual progression of souls from lesser to greater states of blessedness and closer proximity to God. The journey through the spheres begins with the First Sphere of the Moon, inhabited by those who were faithful but inconsistent in their vows. As Dante ascends through the spheres, he encounters souls that have achieved higher states of virtue and understanding during their earthly lives. The ascent culminates with the Primum Mobile, or the "First Moved," which symbolizes the pure love and will of God that drives all creation. Beyond the ninth sphere lies the Empyrean, the realm of pure light and divine presence, where God resides. The celestial spheres, therefore, provide a structured, hierarchical framework for understanding the various levels of spiritual attainment and divine proximity in Dante's interpretation of Heaven.

Something I took away from The Divine Comedy that I never hear anyone talk about is how Dante spirals down thru Hell to get up to that highest Heaven. I would also like to make an unprovable claim and say the Empyrean is the Universe's plane of inertia.

Cool...thanks for sharing. I have been doing a lot of reading about this, out of interest and amongst other things, and you know. the term 'heaven' is just another word for the Throne'. The term heaven is an astral plain that is just in a different realm. Yes, a day here is worth a thousands years there.. .or 1 day there, and barely time passes here. It has been said that Heaven is a beautiful garden where people work, eat, sleep, party, live in magnificent palaces, and you have everything you desire. You keep your bodies, you still be the same. No, you won't know everything, nor will you become an angel. The place is said to be an everlasting peace, glory and worry free. A place where you can meet everywhere, past or present, a place where you can meet famous people if you wished. A place where thoughts become reality. It has been said that 'heaven ' wouldn't exist until Armageddon/Judgment Day. You would be ''asleep'' for thousand years before then and you gain everything bad. Painless of course. A comfortable 26 degree perfect weather all the time.

What was Dante's poems called BEFORE it was labelled a comedy?
I remember it was changed to "comedy" to make it less scary.
It was called Comedia because it was a story with a happy ending. Giovanni Boccaccio added the Divinia part because it was about God.

Sorry, your distinct memory is wrong and Hop is completely right. Dante himself called it a "comedia" and later Boccaccio added the adjective "divina".
Inferno XVI, v.128 "questa comedìa" (this comedy)
Inferno XXI, v.2 "la mia comedìa" (my comedy).
Apparently he referred to it as its title in one of his letters (13) as well, although the authenticity of this letter is debated.
I know it sounds weird, but it was not to make it less scary. The Inferno is scary but the whole poem is hopeful, and the "comedy" label is meant to be the opposite of "tragedy", to indicate that there is a happy ending.

Pure energy starts from the 7th heaven. The higher you move up, the better everything is because it’s closer to God. Even the 2nd heaven is so much better. The 3rd is like a Utopia version of earth with no disease, poverty nor wars. 7th heaven is another level. Can hardly be perceived by a normal human being. Few humans ever have & those weren’t ordinary by any means

First of all if the point of heaven is for us to live in eternity with God then why would he not be there and only be in 1 realm? And second of all, the Bible doesn't say anything about heaven having different realms.

I’ve always felt the 9 has to do with the upset limit of individual consciousness (8D). 9D gets pretty dark and higher than that you can start reversing time.

Christianity is based on a divine Triad and Dante was obsessed with triads. "9" is a triad of triads.
His whole poem has 99+1 chapters (intro + 33 for each of the 3 parts of the afterlife). His chained rhymes are organised in triplets (aBaBcBc...). Every time he uses the word "Cristo" (Christ) at the end of a line, he only rhymes it with "Cristo" so you get the same name 3 times.
This is similar to gothic architecture as well. In the big cathedrals you often see sections of three further divided into smaller sections of three, like in their portals.
It has nothing to do with modern speculation about consciousness.

I don't know about any (9 heavens) God created one Heaven and one Earth, what people fail to understand is.. there are different Heaven and Earth ages the first Heaven and Earth age.. that's where Satan rebelled, so God destroy that age, you can find this destruction in the prophet of (Jeremiah 4:22-28) and it is because of his elect he didn't bring it to a total end, then you have this Earth age.. that you read about in the book of Genesis, where you see after the destruction mentioned in Jeremiah.. the condition of the earth after that destruction, (Genesis 1:2) and then we have the one to come which is the eternity.. the last and final Heaven and Earth age.. that you read about in the 40th chapter of the Great book of Ezekiel..to the end, we are talking about periods of time, and a lot of the misunderstanding comes from misunderstanding (Revelation 21:1) that's states.. I saw a new Heaven and a new Earth the word (New) in that passage should be translated (rejuvenate) meaning he's going to put it back to its original form, the way it was before the overthrow of Satan, God is planning on setting up shop right here on good old planet Earth, and where ever God dwell's that's Heaven 🕊️
