- Hey everyone, welcome to Mythology Explained. In today’s video, we’re going to discuss the nine circles of Hell as they are presented in the Divine Comedy.
Alright, let’s get into it.
The Divine Comedy is a 14th-century epic poem written by Italian poet Dante Alighieri, consisting of three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. It is an allegorical journey through the realms of the afterlife - Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven - serving as a reflection on human sin, morality, and redemption.
The protagonist, Dante, finds himself lost in a dark forest, symbolizing spiritual confusion. The Roman poet Virgil, sent by Dante's beloved Beatrice, guides him through Hell and Purgatory, while Beatrice herself leads him through Heaven. The narrative explores the various punishments and rewards experienced by souls based on their earthly deeds and spiritual growth.
In Inferno, Dante and Virgil journey through nine circles of Hell, each representing different categories of sin, with punishments tailored to the severity of the sins committed. Dante encounters historical and mythological figures, using their stories to explore themes of divine justice and the consequences of human actions and behavior.
Purgatorio, the second part of the poem, is set on Mount Purgatory, a seven-terraced mountain representing the seven deadly sins. As souls ascend the mountain, they undergo purification through penance and spiritual growth. Dante's journey through Purgatory serves as a metaphor for the process of overcoming sin and embracing virtue.
Finally, Paradiso depicts Dante's ascent through the celestial spheres of Heaven. Guided by Beatrice, Dante encounters various saints and theologians, exploring the nature of divine love and wisdom. The journey culminates in a vision of God, emphasizing the ultimate goal of spiritual enlightenment and union with the divine.

@@wrecktitudemedia6514 why do people keep blaming demons for their bad behaviour when accprding to their own book all demons and devils are trapped in hell?
That's like blaming somebody born a vegetable why you shotup an entire school 🤷♂️
Beautiful music. Could you tell me?
I hope you get the chance to visit HELL some day.
@@amberlopez7477 Since Dante, as brilliant a writer as he was for his time, never did any research unto the rivers he listed in the Inferno, his masterpiece is what I consider an absolute joke! This may surprise you, but all 5 Rivers of the Underworld are REAL rivers. All of them are located throughout Greece to this very day. Hell may not be physically possible to vist today, unless you count Florida, but visiting all 5 of these rivers in real life is still possible (when they're not dried up due to a non-rainy season. If you go to Greece, I highly recommend it because it is quite the adventure of a lifetime.
And I thought souls being trapped in a fiery pit, being tortured by the things they mostly feared, dealing with tormenting demons, while pushing heavy boulders up impossible slopes while having thier livers pecked at daily was bad enough.....but this version of Hell is one hell of a nightmare.

I tried many times to read the entire book, was a hard read for me, the way it was broken down into poems. But thank you cliff notes.

Great post except there is no place in hell for neutral people. They're just stuck running around outside of hell, chasing a blank banner while being attacked by insects.
Hmm growing up in church I was taught that our kind just loving God only had a eternal firepit awaiting sinners.
I’m not afraid I’ll take all 9
The thing about religion.. it always keeps you living in the past. Always going back to previous altercations and different avenues that don’t serve you.
Be quiet you, snake, that's not what religion is and you know it.
Damn. God/Dante is so crafty and sick coming up with these punishments. That’s one sick, evil, and twisted bastard.
Hell has always fascinated me because I know I'm going there in a handbasket and would like to at least recognize my surroundings.
That and I feel that before people can define Heaven, they must first create Hell.
This story has taken on a reality for many. I'm sure the author would see that belief in the deception as the shrinking of the soul which comes by a person from not confessing and repenting of their sins.
Who's running Hell if Satan is a forever popsicle?

This isn't "mythology", it is "literature", there's a difference.
Still, very good analysis.
It's literature about mythology. Mythology doesn't just mean "stuff the greeks came up with."

This is terrifying
Good thing is that nobody has to go to hell because God forgives everyone no matter what your sins, he forgives those who ask for forgiveness by coming to him this is called salvation, salvation is forgiveness of sins and will grant entry into heaven, also (when one dies they are free of all their sins as the wages of all sins is death) (Roman's 6:7 & 23) you will only go to hell if you want to so don't fear it

Interesting story! Lots of us would have to experience several rings for our sins. Haha
This is interesting! Good to know about ?
So, if one commits multiple types of sin, how is it determined which circle they will go to?
By which one was the strongest. Someone could be Gluttonous, Prideful and Greedy in their life, but they will go to the circle of the Sin that truly represents them the most.
Someone could be rich through excessive greed their entire life and thus feel Prideful of themselves and their wealth they’ve accumulated; But what they chose to spend their money on the most was food, spending hundreds of dollars per meal at expensive and lavish restaurants every single day, and therefore Gluttony is their eternal punishment.
@Johnny Rocket how is Satan plotting against people of earth bur trapped on a froze lake?
@@kiaadams104 Because the Divine Comedy by Dante Alleghieri is not Canonical Biblical information; It’s a story. No Abrahamic Religion or any of their derivatives ((Judaism, Christianity, Catholicism and their descendants like Protestantism, Mormonism, etc)) consider what Dante wrote to be accurate to the Bible.
.
In the Bible, Lucifer was God’s most Perfect creation. In all his Might and Wisdom and Power; God could never hope to create something more Perfect than Lucifer. He was to be God’s Right-Hand Man for all of Eternity, a Paragon of what He could make. Lucifer was supposed to be the Blueprint of Humanity; The perfect mixture of Masculine and Feminine.
A third of the Angels of Heaven did not side with Lucifer out of fear; They sided with him out of Love. He was more perfect than any Angel, more perfect than anything else God had ever created. He was Intelligent beyond measure, no other Angel could hope to top him in Strategy, Planning, Warfare, Music, Architecture, and so much more.
He was literally Perfection Incarnate in everything relating to Human Affairs. We were supposed to be modeled after Lucifer, as the Bible tells us.
.
In the Canonical Bible, God never banished Lucifer. Banishment entails he can never return. No, Lucifer was Exiled. He cannot permanently reside in Heaven anymore, but he is allowed to visit whenever he might ask God to speak with him. But only for a short time before he has to leave.
In the Bible, Lucifer was exiled under a certain condition, “Understand the error of your ways and realize your place at My Divine Side as my Greatest achievement.” Once this requirement is met, Lucifer can freely return to Heaven and stay there for eternity.
But that’s not what Lucifer wants. He wants to be the One True God; The Ruler of All That Is. Lucifer is not permanently bound to the confines of Hell; He can exert his Will across Earth with ease. It’s just that he cannot create a physical body, merely possess and influence humans.
Lucifer failed with only one third of Heaven against the majority of Angels at God’s side, so the reason he is trying to influence Humans and bring them to his side is **Not to punish souls at God’s behest,** but rather to build a large enough Army of spirits and Angels to reenact the War In Heaven and finally claim Dominion over All That Is.

Because in Dante's inferno Satan isn't a torturer, he's a prisoner, like everyone else trapped in hell.
I don't understand why people interpret Hell as Satan's domain, when hell is supposed to be his prison for betraying God.
Like yeah God, real smart letting the guy that betrayed you to have his own realm of existence where he can build an army.
No, Satan doesn't want to suffer alone, and those other sufferers just so end up joining him to escape their prison.
The end times is basically Satan's prison break, not his "oh well time to cause the end of the world"
Now that is deep
Imagine having a child. And that child misbehaves. And your response as his loving parent is to create a place so awful that after your child dies they will suffer these fates for all eternity with no end and no ability to repent after death. You’d be an evil parent in this case.
Imagine having a child, who you love dearly, but because they are free, make choices that separate them from you and your love.
Imagine trying to help time and time again, but ultimately they choose to commit sin and so remain distanced from your love.
A drug addict puts themselves in their own hell, separated from all that love them. Same with us and God.
Lol imagine your handbook to life LITERALLY SAYS the wages of sin is death, then skip a few chapters to where this loving being (never being childish, jealous, or imperfect enough to let Satan prank him in the entire Book of Job, of COURSE) decides that his blood ritual is mandatory or you'll be punished forever, even after you've paid your wages of death. God's petty like that. Spent half my life scared of your fantasy, hope you wake up and find you don't need to believe in ridiculous things to lead an honorable life as a kind and responsible person.
Looking at this, is this where we are all going to end up.
What happens if the frozen lake is Antarctica . I feel like the 9 circles are hollow earth

Maybe in Australia, the formula is different to the US or England.
Purgatory time in hell is for the demons only
Satan isn't trapped he's not even in hell right now so I don't know where this information about a frozen lake came from because he'll be thrown into the lake of fire by Jesus and you'll know when you're in hell, there will be suffering and the body you have in that place is built to be tormented.
It’s funny some groins are blurred others aren’t
You know it would be nice if each of us had a Guardian Angel to take through one of the circles of Hell if we're starting to make the bad decisions to show us where we're going to end up. I know personally I have made some mistakes and I try to be a good person. I don't believe I've ever betrayed somebody but I have lied before, greed is also an issue considering the capitalist system we have in the United States basically has us chasing money on a daily basis to accumulate wealth. I know if I had an angel show me where I'm going to end up if I continue down a certain path I would change my ways in a heartbeat.
We do lol. He chose Virgil to represent his guide to demonstrate the value of classic literature and how it guides us through the trials of life. Your guardian angels can all fit on a 5x5 book shelf.

So let me get this straight. The 6th Circle is really located in the Aroania Mountains in Greece's northern Peloponnese Peninsula near Nonacris while the 1st, 7th, and 9th Circles are all located at the Necromanteion of Acheron in Epirus, Greece? Does that also mean that the Earthly Paradise (atop the Mountain of Purgatory as mentioned in Dante's Purgatorio) actually being located in southern Livadia (Boeotia, Greece) at the Cave of Trophonius? The reason I ask these questions is because these are the REAL locations of all the 5 infernal rivers as mentioned in Dante's description of the Underworld. Just FYI: The River Styx is also called the Mavroneri. The Lethe River is the only true "underworld" river that cones in the fotm of a spring at the Springs of Kyra in Livadia. The Acheron is the only infernal river located on Google Maps by name and it's a major tourist attraction in Glyki, Greece. Although not mentioned by name on Google Map's Terrain Mode (only way to see them!), both the Phlegethon (Vouvos) and the Cocytus (Mavros) can be seen flowing into the Acheron from the north (with the Phlegethon on the left and the Cocytus on the right) where the intersection of the 3 rivers being located just to the right of the Necromanteion of Acheron (Oracle of the Dead) in Mesopotamos of Epirus, Greece. Underneath the Necromanteion exists a tunnel featuring the an ACTUAL physical, but sealed off, entrance to The Underworld which was supposedly used by Orpheus when he attempted to rescue his wife Eurydice from Hades). WARNING: The River Styx aka The Mavroneri (meaning "Black Water"), begins with a black waterfall which was once known to contain the most deadliest toxic substance in the entire world called Calicheamicin. Calicheamicins target your DNA and cause strand scission as they induce double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) breakages at sub-picomolar concentrations. In Layman's terms, it scrambles your DNA! Calicheamicin displays unbiased toxicity to bacteria, fungi, viruses, eukaryotic cells, and especially to Alexander The Great. Fortunately, the only way to die from it is if you digest it. Knowing this fact, I now personally believe that the story of Achilles was mistranslated. Achilles didn't get his invulnerability when his mother dipped him in the River Styx by his heel, it was a test to see if he had preexisting invulnerability because if you can survive being dipped into the worst toxic waste in history, you can survive anything!

Crazy that these shitty game companies have managed to brain wash people into thinking DLC is something normal and to be expected. @@ivornworrell it's not the Bible it's an allegory
@@bunnybird9342 i c, & how do YOU no that, bunny??
@@ivornworrell The Divine Comedy is an allegory of the soul's journey towards God. Even Dante himself wrote about it in a letter.
The greatest difficulty I had with reading Dante's Inferno was the references to people specific to his time. There were hundreds of footnotes about people I had never heard of, but they were likey known in his time. It took away from the timeless quality of the work, even though it is a classic. Very vivid and specific description of Hell, though. I always wondered if the references were to connote comedy or satire, and I always go back and forth between the seriousness and horror of the story and the possible comedic intention. I don't know.
Its a language barrier problem. Nothing about it is "Comedy" or "funny" or satire. The job of a Commedia is to: "project a reality closer to the daily life"
The word itself comes from greek and means: "procession in honor of the gods/divinity"
Commedia is also usually a story or piece of art with a good ending.
For Dante it was a journey to the betterment of himself, to find God and finding Gods vision/enlightenment.
@@IlNamelessKinglI Thanks for tellingi me, I didn't know what to make of it, honestly. It's been a while since university. My footnotes only explained who the people were. So it's serious, and no joke. Essentially, Dante saying outright and without humor that these people were going to be in Hell? Pretty damning.
@@tryingbutfailing Usually they are meant to be stories with a good ending and like, uplifting content etc...but for Dante it was a different story. And yeah from what I remember in School, no one told me he was joking or making satire about anything 😂
When he placed certain historical people in certain circles, he really thought those guys were bad guys, but he still respected some of them and enjoyed stopping by to have a conversation with them.
@@IlNamelessKinglIwell, it was also a little bit of a political hit piece. They banished him, so he immortalized them in hell.
Who would set someone up in anyway to be hurt in anyway. That weirder.
Could it be that Satan is trapped under Antarctica?🤔
It's fiction.
What if he's under Arctic pole? Or in Siberia?
Yea satan is in Antarctica and Santa Claus is in the North poll.
It would be interesting to compare Dante's circle of hells and buddhist's Narakas (or in Japanese Jigokus). The idea of a descending hell and increasingly sever punishments, hot and cold regions and the gruesomes sceneries are shared between these hell depictions. Knowing that Narakas are quite old (first mentions around the 5th century), maybe Dante has been inspired by eastern mythology to describe his christian hell.
Extremely similar
@@rchristianwooley4870 considering Christianity is a rip off of many religions, it's a wonder how nobody in said religion, knows it yet
Truth aligns no matter the time period
There is no way he would have known about Buddhism. However there is some speculation that he knew about the Apocalypse of Paul which describes hell in detail and does include some cold hells.
Rabbit Hole time!!!!!
so everyone goes to hell. nice
I do enjoy a good bit of Divine Comedy. Hope we get a video on Purgatory and Paradise
Keep that same energy in the lake of fire 🔥
What did you think of national express? That was quite upbeat
Yeah religion is so fake it doesn't even have a special circle for all of the catholic and christian priests who rape kids 😬😬😬
@@Mo.1988 You sheep

The video game was dope AF
EeeeeeYAH!!!!
I had the unexpected tears listening to this. It really does help one reflect on their own actions.
I am repentful of the wrong doings in my life. I am no Christian but I do believe in right and wrong.
I do the best I can on a day to day basis. I hope my actions help change people for the good.
For me the greatest realization was hell and heaven are makeable settings of mind in this mortal life.
I am so happy for you get baptized time is running out
It's just a book...
@@Oh_mariam
Do you think those strong in Faith but have physical/emotional challenges or limitations who cannot or are private people for whatever reason,
that being baptized is MANDATORY to be allowed entrance into Heaven?
What about babies or children?
Or those who have been baptized that are human monsters who hate, steal, hurt, kill?
@@Oh_mariamthat’s Abrahaimic mythology 😂
An interesting thought, most sinners commit various sins throughout their existence. So does that mean, that you are punished for the gravest sin or punished in order of severity?
Another interesting thought, the many ways one can condemn oneself to Purgatory or Damnation, their maybe few residing in Heaven. Please note, self assurance in one's place in Heaven, is the sin of Pride.
We must remember that we are flawed, weak and undeserving of the light and love of God. By knowing this, we build our love and faith in God and strive to be one with God. Knowing the perfect existence of God and our flawed nature, humbles us.
Be Humble and have Faith, for God is with you always. Amen.
🤣
Amen
Nine circles of hell and the seven deadly sins, Blessed Be.
How ridiculous. Light as a feather stiff as a board..🤣😂🤣🙄
My own personal belief is that we're already in hell, I like to refer to it as the 10th circle, but God offers us hope.
lol
Yeah we definitely somewhere.
I think it’s always funny that Satan is just getting slam dunked constantly by god lmao
Devil may cry
So basically god is the government? 🤔😶
Just the politicians alone Hell is going to be a crowed place.
Satan may be trapped in the lake, but TRUE hell is having to take your shirt off to go in the water
Genesis 3:14-15 - God has always had victory over evil.
Proverbs 18:10 - God is our shelter.
Psalm 56:8 - Our sorrow matters to God.
Romans 5:3-5 - Our pain has a purpose.
How does eternal pain in hell serve a purpose? Just throw em in a fire n forget about em? I don't understand but I guess it's gods will not mine
Our sorrow matters to god alright. God gets off on suffering obviously
How about your Bible's assertion that the wages of sin is death? Scaring people with something afterwards sounds like such a lame pitiful insecure move.
My favorite take on Dante's Inferno is by Larry Niven Inferno, and even his sequel escape from hell. He is a sci-fi writer so it really has some fun aspects.
I read both of them; I like how for example he shows that in the Gluttony Circle there's like someone who was a fitness or weight loss fanatic or something, to show that that circle is not just about overeating but an imbalance in consumption. Niven and Pournelle did a great job with their work.
I think satan is not trapped in a frozen lake but still rules our modern world.
Fax
Lol sure
He’s not real.
I think the divine comedy stands as an example of the hierarchy of sins and how the lords of the greatest sin sits in the midst of the torment of mortals and fallen angels alike but this is applying christian over tones to Dante's work
It is damn creepy how detailed this is lol
Imo the sixth and the ninth are the creepiest. Especially with how sinners in the sixth circle can only "remember" the future and will forget everything once time ends, and how some sinners actually go to the ninth circle before dying which then leaves their bodies to get taken over by demons pretending to be them until the body's natural death.
