PANTSMONSTER66 What you are and what I am does not matter whatsoever. I did not say we were British. We were Canadian even when we we had British symbols to identify us. In both world wars Canadians, serving King, Canada and the Empire bore British unit identification, used British traditions and flew the British Flag, even the Canadian Red Ensign which Canadians in both world wars fought under was a Canadian symbol, it was designed in Canada in 1868 a year after Confederation in 1867.
@stalbanslad Be happy that Canada grew up, and was able to spread its wings. We owe a debt of gratitude to the UK for helping make Canada what it has become - a tolerant, progressive, multicultural social democracy.
you need to review the Department of Canadian Heritage if you disagree. You will then see that Canada does have two official flags. One is used for rather specific events, is all.
Canada was a real country before it had its present flag. Saying otherwise is a sad demonstration of national insecurities, and if nothing else, rude to everyone in our history that used it and died fighting under it.
I always wanted that Eddie picture from The Trooper as a tattoo, but I would have a Red Ensign instead of the Union Jack, that way its Canadian but still pays respect to Britain.
Paul Flag How can a nation be represented by a mere leaf or foliage that resembles more of a sports or beer logo rather than a dignified design of historical, cultural and national pride?
nice attitude dude...dont forget your rights and freedoms today (and not speaking german) are due to WW2 vets who fought and DIED under that Flag your Curse. my fellow canadians truly amaze me sometimes. I have never seen a 1st world country soooooo passionately hate their own pride and heritage.
The greatest honour that we can give to those who've died for our country is to continue growing and developing as a nation. The most pressing thing now is to make life better for Canadians, and to fight for justice around the world. In keeping with this idea, we can ensure that captured ex-child soldiers are not treated outside the law by foreign countries, while being denied their right of citizenship at home.
As good Canadians our main goal as a country is to make sure that it ends up in the hands of Asian people while our population dwindles and in the meantime we can be sure to grovel and obfuscate our history and culture so no one takes offense to our existence.
@Prairielander I'm all for honouring our heritage; but I'm also all for proclaiming our independence and multicultural reality. The Canadian Constitution recognises that we were founded by more than one nation, and the discontent in Quebec can be traced to the reality of English domination. The old flag was a potent symbol of that dynamic.
Maybe,it should be.We're not British anymore and we don't need their-or any other country's-flag.The Leaf is our flag now and we don't need one from another country.
It was the beginning of the end for so many great things about our country. I was forced to watch this sad event on TV in our public school's auditorium. I remember being told how great an event this was by our grade five school teacher. Nothing great ever happened and I stand corrected being sad on that February 15, 1965 day, There is nothing I can change for you "Nationalist Canuck".
And the Maple Leaf Forever never was the official anthem of Canada. Until 01 Jul 80 the official anthem was God Save The Queen. We just sang O Canada because we all felt it should ALWAYS have been THE....OFFICIAL anthem. It was almost 100 years late in coming.
We're both entitled to our own perspectives. I simply disagree on your take of an Ensign. You don't have to speak as if I am some old-money Lord from Westminster's second chamber - I know the Empire is of the past. The Empire has no connexion to what I was referring to. Indeed, Canada has evolved. But if this is the case, then why did the Liberals choose an even more exclusive flag than the Red Ensign to represent the Federal Government?
It was and is our true flag ... the committee that imposed the Liberal Party rag could not change that. The Red Ensign and The Maple Leaf Forever! I like O'Canada as an anthem but it just does not strike the same heart-felt chords. Both should be the official anthems of this country which would be more historically correct anyhow.
Always makes me laugh that as they lower he Red Ensign & Raise the new flag they play a song (the Maple Leaf Forever) about the Union Jack flying in Canada.
Nat Mey I'm Canadian born and raised but this new flag does not represent me. The old Canadian Red Ensign represents me and my family, the Union Flag, the Lions of England, the Lion of Scotland and the three Maple Leafs.
Yes but the point is it doesn't represent Indian-Canadians, Vietnamese-Canadians, Syrian-Canadians, Brazilian-Canadians, Italian-Canadians, Greek-Canadians, etc. etc. The sole Maple Leaf came to represent Canadians of all backgrounds. That's why the Red Ensign was a relic of the British Empire's outdated tradition. It's not relevant except in a historic sense to the Canada of today.
Nat Mey it may not represent them but they are not Canadian in the sense of having either solely Canadian or English Canadian, Irish Canadian, French Canadian, Scottish Canadian blood.
I know about the Red Ensign; its place is largely reserved for War Memorials, Cenotaphs, and historic events. And what you may say is true, but you admit to an ultimate ignorance about your own country that ought to be an embarrassment.
and that is the line of reasoning why we humans will NEVER learn from the past. and keep repeating the same mistakes..we CHOOSE to ignore and shun history. my fellow canucks seems to be particualry fond of hating their heritage. I admire our Yankee neighbours..at least they are proud of who they are even if most of the world hates them. They dont care. I resepect that about them.

The Dominion of Canada should have been transformed into a Province of the United Kingdom of Great Britain just like how Martinique and Guadeloupe where transformed from Colonies to Departments of the Republic of France. The term of the United Kingdom of Great Britain should not just be applied to England and Scotland, but should also be applied to Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The United Kingdom of Great Britain should be comprised of six provinces which should be 1)The Province of England, 2)The Province of Scotland, 3)The Province of Ireland, 4)The Province of Canada, 5)The Province of Australia and 6)The Province of New Zealand. England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand should be to Great Britain what California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois and Pennyslvania are to America. The Republic of France is not just comprised of Metropolitan France (Mainland France) and Corisca, it is also comprised of Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana for example. The United Kingdom of Great Britain should not just be comprised of just of England and Scotland (Mainland Great Britain) but also Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The Dominion of Canada is LOYALIST and ROYALIST land and all French Quebecois seperatist and nationalist traitors and all Anglo Canadian republican traitors should be deported to both America and France ASAP. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN AND LONG LIVE THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN.
well said my family are united empire loyalists.to bad alot canadians have no idea about this and brainwashed by liberals over years
That was a sad day in Canada!!!!!
This was a great moment in Canadian history.
This was a shameful moment in Canadian history.
Lucas Hammond For many of those including myself that admire our Canadian Red Ensign believe this is a shameful moment in our history, Liberals throwing away our true identity as Canadians and giving us a new "identity" The new one is a pretender and I still fly a Canadian Red Ensign and a Union Flag as it should be.
CPRailEnthusiast You beat me to it! Yes, Lucas, that is why it is shameful.
+1812AndMore What will you do in *that inevitable moment when the Federal Republic of Canada* is proclaimed?
@stalbanslad Be happy that Canada grew up, and was able to spread its wings. We owe a debt of gratitude to the UK for helping make Canada what it has become - a tolerant, progressive, multicultural social democracy.
HAPPY 150 BIRTHDAY CANADA
This is probably a shot in the dark, but does anybody know what was the music played during the lowering of the Red Ensign?
youdonknowme I would like to know too.
you need to review the Department of Canadian Heritage if you disagree.
You will then see that Canada does have two official flags.
One is used for rather specific events, is all.
Canada was a real country before it had its present flag.
Saying otherwise is a sad demonstration of national insecurities, and if nothing else, rude to everyone in our history that used it and died fighting under it.
I grew up with our flag it would be too painful to switch it back! I do want the old anthem returned though! "Maple Leaf Forever."
No need to. The current flag is good. Though the Red ensign is still used because countries tend to have multiple flags, though one official one.
February 15, 2015: Happy Canada flag day for the 50th time
I always wanted that Eddie picture from The Trooper as a tattoo, but I would have a Red Ensign instead of the Union Jack, that way its Canadian but still pays respect to Britain.
Does anyone know the title or composer of the fanfare being played when the red ensign is being lowered?
It is definitely the most beautiful flag of any country bar none
I was alive in Canada when this happened, but too young to remember.
Red ensign and Maple leaf flags are both good.
Red Ensign this Dominion day
where i can get a officiel maple leaf flag used by ottawa?
Paul Flag How can a nation be represented by a mere leaf or foliage that resembles more of a sports or beer logo rather than a dignified design of historical, cultural and national pride?
What's the song played as the Old flag was lowered?
I have the same question- it's an amazing sounding fanfare!
Probably a royal music or traditional Canadian music. Not sure
Maple Leaf Forever
(British Canadian's anthem)
At the end of the video
(God save the queen; Royal Canadian anthem)
@678caper
My grandfather refused to fly the new one until his death in the 80's.
nice attitude dude...dont forget your rights and freedoms today (and not speaking german) are due to WW2 vets who fought and DIED under that Flag your Curse.
my fellow canadians truly amaze me sometimes.
What song is playing when the ensign is lowered? It sounds like i belongs in a wetern movie.
56 years ago today
The audio is in French.
the Union Flag, however, is not a foreign flag in Canada.
That is the basic premise behind the legality of it as our second flag.
Maybe,it should be.We're not British anymore and we don't need their-or any other country's-flag.The Leaf is our flag now and we don't need one from another country.
It should be foreign
The start of the end. Change my mind.
What?
It was the beginning of the end for so many great things about our country. I was forced to watch this sad event on TV in our public school's auditorium. I remember being told how great an event this was by our grade five school teacher. Nothing great ever happened and I stand corrected being sad on that February 15, 1965 day, There is nothing I can change for you "Nationalist Canuck".
i have both flags in my room
Anthem appeared on Sign on and off
white flag / ( what color of leaf/ elemental )?
God bless Canada!
@TheSourceNoob What has that got to do with anything?
Sad to see it go..
Certainly, we each have the right to our opinion. Have a Happy Canada Day!
@678caper ...& from it, gave birth to a REAL country!!! Long live Canada, and our beautiful flag!
Agreed!
This begs the question: do conservatives and right-leaning Canadians generally prefer the Red Ensign over the Maple Leaf Flag?
Is this a question? You know the answer.
Happy 55th Anniversary on your new flag, Canada! 🇨🇦. By the way, I still prefer the old flag..
And the Maple Leaf Forever never was the official anthem of Canada. Until 01 Jul 80 the official anthem was God Save The Queen. We just sang O Canada because we all felt it should ALWAYS have been THE....OFFICIAL anthem. It was almost 100 years late in coming.
I do think the flag deserves to be used on cenotaphs and war memorials.
Trust the French commentary to step on the royal anthem haha
We're both entitled to our own perspectives.
I simply disagree on your take of an Ensign.
You don't have to speak as if I am some old-money Lord from Westminster's second chamber - I know the Empire is of the past.
The Empire has no connexion to what I was referring to.
Indeed, Canada has evolved. But if this is the case, then why did the Liberals choose an even more exclusive flag than the Red Ensign to represent the Federal Government?
We see here an example of typical media irreverance. The loud mouthed reporter will not be silent whilst the Royal Anthem is played. Irksome.
They don't mention that the first flags had to be made in the U.S. Our red wasn't the right shade.
It was a good day. Finally a flag to represent ALL Canadians
Nat Mey I'm Canadian born and raised but this new flag does not represent me. The old Canadian Red Ensign represents me and my family, the Union Flag, the Lions of England, the Lion of Scotland and the three Maple Leafs.
1812AndMore I'm Canadian too born and raised but without a drop of British blood, so what should represent me?
Nat Mey The Red Ensign had the Coat of Arms OF Canada and the Three Maple Leafs entwined. It also represents Canadians with Irish, and French blood.
@fishhead06 Queen Elizabeth II is still Canada's monarch. A couple of whiney frenchies dose not change that.
Happy 50th anniversary, Maple Leaf Flag!
NO RACE IN OTER SPACE HAS A FLAG LIKE CANADA
I know about the Red Ensign; its place is largely reserved for War Memorials, Cenotaphs, and historic events.
And what you may say is true, but you admit to an ultimate ignorance about your own country that ought to be an embarrassment.
now thats a fookin flag
1:07 Was that Adolf Hitler’s voice????
and that is the line of reasoning why we humans will NEVER learn from the past. and keep repeating the same mistakes..we CHOOSE to ignore and shun history.
my fellow canucks seems to be particualry fond of hating their heritage.
I admire our Yankee neighbours..at least they are proud of who they are even if most of the world hates them. They dont care. I resepect that about them.
Wow
Old one > New one
🖕⚜️
learn how that flag was voted for in the parliament without a proper vote Thanks Lieberals
