- Moments before midnight on July 1 1997, the Union Jack and the British colonial flag of Hong Kong was removed with the British empire's national anthem "God save the Queen" to mark the end of Britain's rule in Hong Kong and the Chinese flag was raised with the "The volunteer's March" to officially mark the start of Chinese rule in Hong Kong
It's rather like a funeral ceremony of European colonial rule itself.

Romans 6.23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Different situations - Hong Kong wasn't granted independence, it was returned to another country.
It was a British government, that of Margaret Thatcher, which brought about an end to white minority rule in Zimbabwe, allowing Robert Mugabe to come to power. What happened after independence is Zimbabwe's responsibility. Similarly, what happened in Nigeria after independence is Nigeria's responsibility. As for Bangladesh, it wasn't Britain that helped it break with Pakistan, it was India.

I understand that Britain didn’t have a choice but instead of a lease that expired, there should’ve been a referendum to decide what the people of Hong Kong wanted.
China made it clear they were prepared to invade, plus you know what the PRC does to any country who refuses to "accept" the One China policy? that would be the case, but unfortunately the British policy of self-determination was just cast aside and the people of Hong Kong were handed to China on a plate. This is because of growing international pressure (UN deconolization commission, which does not take into the account the self determination of people such as Falkland Islanders), the fact the Chinese chairman said he could take Hong Kong within a day and because it would open the door for more trade with China.

You are mistaken. Governor Mark Aitchison Young had tried to push for political reforms under his "Young Plan" in 1946 which would have eventually result in a Municipal Council (taking charge of all matters except for finance and defence) which would be 2/3 directly elected and 1/3 appointed. It eventually did not materialise because of the background of the Chinese Civil War (both KMT and CCP might manipulate political situation in HK) and the lack of support from the locals at that time.

All of the comments below are just patriots missing colonialism thinking it's better for other nations 😂😂 most don't even understand Hong Kong's status now they think it's just a city of China
Then explain why most HK citizens want to return to British rule?
mr.madness Most don't ,they want to be an independent city state not a Special Administrative region that doesn't actually have any true democracy (they have the vote but they can only vote for parties nominated by the communist party of china but we'll have to until 2017 if they'll repeal this new undemocratic policy) nor a British colony being suppressed with minority white rule. Also there were numerous riots (the 1966 riots and the 1967 Leftist riots) for anti-British imperialism there were even groups such as the Anti-British Struggle Committee which was established for the purpose of targeting the British Colonial government.
In an opinion poll, 90% said they want HK to return to British rule. HK'ers are afraid and tired of the oppressive CCP trying to control every aspect of their lives, and the recent kidnappings of the 5 booksellers does nothing to quell the situation, I can agree that the ultimate goal is a completely free HK, by of that doesn't present itself as an option, then most would rather return to British rule. I can assert that HK citizens felt better under British rule, then Chinese rule, just ask almost any HK citizen.

@taki619 That would be unlikely cos like I told you before, the Chinese made law after Taiwan threatened independence some years ago (Taiwan is Chinese terrority despite different political system). which forbids independence and that covers SARs too. Us Brits won't be back too cos Britain promised not to take back HK in the 1984 treaty signed by Zhao Ziyang and Mrs Thatcher.
We can't do anything to help HK now cos we are tied to that promise. Sorry HK.
Hongkong is totally different with the places of the communist China even Peking. We have freedom of expression, do they have? Our country is governed by ourselves, do they? The answer is very clear. Hongkong is older than the communist China, even the Repubic of China. How can they say the communist China is the mother country of Hongkong?
But the fruits of the growth was held by tycoons and their associates, who happened to be the only ones who have the vote in either electing members of the functional constituency seats and the Chief Executive by virtue of their membership on the election committee. Ordinary Hong Kongers can't vote for their CE but Li Ka-shing and his fellow tycoons could. That must be rocket science to you, old sport.
