  • As a journalist first for ATV, then TVB for 5 years I covered events leading up to the handover and beyond between 1995-2000.
    On December 19th 1999 the the eve of Macau's historic handover from Portuguese Colony to Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China I recorded the daylong coverage.
    Here for historians and researchers as well as friends and colleagues is how it looked and felt on that day.
    In this segment:
    00:01 Portugal's President Jorge Sampaio continues his his speech
    06:03 The Portuguese flag lowering ceremony begins

    the hong kong handover video is so popular whereas the macau handover has far lesser views

    • @VV_PaVria
      @VV_PaVria 5 лет назад +50

      I can think of some reasons why:
      -Macau is far less populated than Hong Kong, and is also smaller by area. Hong Kong has a huge economic and geopolitical standing at the time of their handover compared to Macau.
      -Hong Kong is also far more receptive of its relations to the PRC, what with the continuous protests that are heard by the rest of the world, so they tend to look back at their handover. Macau, meanwhile, isn't as noisy, and seemed to take their transition more smoothly than Hong Kong, so they're not too resistant.

    • @HK_Nation
      @HK_Nation 9 лет назад +5

      Kenttheclark Perhaps the GDP of Macau rized enormously. That's just because Stanley Ho didn't have such a good relationship with Jiang Zemin while he pretty much controlled the Portuguese Macau government. And besides who got rich? Many residents of Portuguese Macau emigrated during this period as Portugal granted Macanese the right of abode in Portugal. China got the land, then just replaced the population with a new, more oobedientone. This new obedient population was the one that got rich, not the True Macanese.

    • @HK_Nation

      Kenttheclark Macau's quality of life, if you base it on HDI or other charts than fine, but Macau is no longer what it used to, a laid back, somewhat poor but happy place. And now 1 million people (counting tourists) crammed into a space the size of half Manhattan with the language eradicated, local shops bulldozed, iconic buildings demolished... Macau was named a developed economy by the IMF in the early 1990s, so it is indeed saddening to see all of these icons of Macau disappear without any trace.
