    I am looking for a job, trying to prepare to take the MOS, and learn how to use my Window 8.1 laptop all at once. MERCY! Thank you for making it more clear to me.

    This is a great way to learn how to use many different capabilities that google drive has as well as things like power point, exel, etc. and how to share things with people much easier than many other ways like faxing etc.

    Very well presented and done, thank you. I found it very easy to follow your instructions. Looking to share large video files with friends. Have been experimenting with other platforms; One Drive, Shutter Fly, etc..... with not much success when I send a test file to another of my email accounts. Yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks..... only if the ol' dog wants to learn.....

    Excellent video, its confusing at first, here a couple of things i learned
    1. After backing up files from my phone to PC,sign out of "Google Drive" it's separate from "Google Account" other wise it can get confusing".
    2.The other thing is after backing up my ph to "Gogle Drive "my music stored on my SDCard would disapear, solved this by moving music from my SDCard to phone Internal storage," not sure why?early days yet, still trial and error though your vid was excellent.
    Thankyou.

    Thank you for your video 👍 I am worried about using these cloud based things - sharing accidentally etc .
    If I download the google drive to my laptop , does it keep things from other google account separate or does it merge/share them ? I’m a bit confused because Google loves to link all of your accounts.
    I recently had to set up a new Gmail account for my work where I have to work on spreadsheets etc which is shared with head office & other staff across the country. Head office set up the files that they share with me.
    So will that stuff always be separate from my personal stuff because my personal stuff is on a different gmail & different password from my new Gmail account used for my work colleagues?
    Also when I update the spreadsheets for my head office manager, do I need to sync that in order for them to see my changes or do they automatically get my updates because I’m authorized to update files by them?
    Thanks for your help

    Do you know if Google has changed things so that MS Word files are now able to be imported into Google Drive without a problem? And can one now export to MS Word format from Google Drive? I am asking because a group of us found it impossible to get Word files to work on GD about a year ago. Also, at that time, one could not even merge cells in a table in GD - significant disadvantages which have kept me using Microsoft's OneDrive.

    • @techteachersandstudents
      @techteachersandstudents  9 лет назад +1

      drutgat2 It is possible to import MS Word documents into Google Drive. When you do import them, though, they are "read only." You can't edit them. If you want to edit a MS Word doc that you've imported into Google Drive, you can double-click on the document name, then choose the "Open with" button that will appear at the top of the screen, and select "Google Docs." Doing so will make a copy of your MS Word document and convert it to Google Docs format, which will be editable.

    • @drutgat2
      @drutgat2 9 лет назад

      Technology for Teachers and Students Many thanks for your reply.
      Unfortunately, I just noticed that when I email myself a copy of the MS Word document that I have shared with others in Google Drive, the formatting is different from the MS Word document that I shared with others, which is a little worrying, as one wants to know that others are at least seeing the same version of the document.
      And, as I expected, the formatting of the original MS Word document and the GD version of that document are different.
      This is problematic.
      Thanks again for your reply.

      Dear reader of this comment, While on drive.google.com, when you upload a document, Word or other format, if you have, prior to uploading, selected the option "Convert uploaded files to Google document editor format," it IS then editable by you and, simultaneously, by whomever you have/will share it with.
      That option is set by clicking on the "gear" icon at the upper right on the main Gdrive page then selecting "settings." The setting is "on" until you shut it off, and vice-versa, to allow for bulk uploading and converting of files.
      One caution for you, before editing any Google doc that has been uploaded/"converted": it may not be downloaded with ALL the original formatting supported by the app that was used to originally create the document, say MS Word (i.e., some formatting may be lost upon "Download As" in the document's "File" menu [while you are "in" the document, and/or, in the popup menu>Download - using right mouse button on the document's name - while you are in the document's PARENT FOLDER view]).
      HOWEVER :) IF a document contains formatting that will be lost upon downloading then you probably didn't need that formatting in the first place. Why? Because it was only used in a non-standard proprietary (Microsoft, etc.) document. Haha!

    I note that Microsoft's "One Drive" was mentioned towards the end of this video. Unless Microsoft have changed One Drive . . . .beware. I used One Drive to backup files and then could not access them . . . .because I was not running the latest version of Office i.e. Office 365. Despite the fact that I had created those files in an earlier version of the program - in this instance the program was Publisher 2010 - I would not be able to access them until I had Publisher 2013 or later. (Downgrades to some of the available setting on the 2013 version mean that I 'won't be going there!' . . . .so the files just sit there on One Drive and I looked elsewhere for the solution to my backing up of file 'in the cloud'. Eventually, due to constant issues with space availability, we now have a paid version of Dropbox. We've gone from constant 'scrimping' to now having a massive amount of storage space!! Such a shame that there is not an in-between option!)

    How do I install Google Drive to a mapped location?
    On a 1TB or larger drive, syncing is fine. But, on a 256GB SSD, 17GB of mirroring is more than I am willing to place on my local drive.
    Please advise... I would like the sync to take place on Network drive K or L please.

    I was wondering if you know anything about the security of google drive? Or is "One Drive" better? That is; Do you find one more secure than the other. I only ask because it seems that these days if you just type someones email into gmail they find that person immediately. There seems to be no privacy these days especially if you do anything on google. Would love your thoughts on this.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 9 лет назад

      You would be totally at the mercy of the internet. Anything that is on the internet isn't exactly 100% secure there will always be a potential that someone could steal or otherwise manipulate your personal files including deleting them or otherwise. I just use it for general notes, and a way to store something to be able to copy it to another device easily. I don't store anything long term that would need to be secure.

      I agree that anything saved on the cloud or on a machine connected to a network/internet is vulnerable. But, consider the amount of resources Google has to make its data centers secure. Files sent to and from Google Drive are encrypted. The likelihood of someone intercepting that file or accessing Google's file servers and decrypting it is virtually nil. I doubt a lot of folks encrypt their own files they store on their own PC. Also, you will never have to worry about losing any files or data with Google Drive. To me it is the ultimate secure long term storage solution (barring some sort of nuclear annihilation where all of the Google data centers are leveled, but if that happened then you have more important things to worry about than old files :) ). Not to mention, there are a TON of universities, school systems, and government agencies that use the service. If its good enough for them its good enough for me. Just my two cents.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 9 лет назад

      Ed Shewbridge I now use Google Drive, as well as Google Calendar. Both work great, easy access from any internet capable device. I agree, it seems secure and probably more secure than your personal computer with antivirus and antispyware installed. I'm definitely getting a lot of use out of these Google features on a daily basis at work and at home. Don't have to carry around thumb drives and risk the drive being lost or stolen.

      William Todd Glad to hear it! I'm not a Google rep or anything, but our school district recently dropped Outlook and adopted the whole Google Apps for Education. We are saving a ton of time and money on licensing, storage and server maintenance, e-discovery processes, staff collaboration and productivity, and so on. Drive and Gmail storage is unlimited for Education and it was free!

    No mention of the file structure. It seems to be just one massive list.
    It should be similar to a Microsoft file system. Hirarchical. It been around for years, yet when I tell my phone to save to google drive, it just dumps the file in the mess. I'm sure that Google can do better. As it is its virtually unusable for storing documents.
