These are adorable. I've noticed a LOT more homemade plywood decorations. I love it, more original than a ton of blow ups that are on every corner. I agree with the other commenter, a POSCA paint pen would be better and you can get a fat tip. Can I ask how long these take? I have a huge side yard that I really want to do up next year but not sure how far ahead I need to start.
Thanks for commenting! I was tired of fighting the inflatables and really liked the older style homemade decorations. I spent a few days on my first 2 decorations which were Mickey and Minnie. After learning how to do it I was able to complete the Tree, Donald, Daisy, Pete, Goofy, and Pluto in the same amount of time. I would guess it took about 3 days x 8 hours per day for the last 6 decorations. Good Luck! Please send a video of your completed decorations!
Love these homemade decorations! I can't draw worth a darn so the projector is great idea. My grandfather made Santa's Sleigh and Reindeers in the 1940's and my dad added a Rudolph with a red-light nose in the 1960's. Time for me to make some. I'm thinking Penguins and Snowmen are always popular.
Nice job. I did some a few years ago. Charlie Brown: the great pumpkin. And I'm doing Thanksgiving Charlie Brown cutouts now. I do everything identical to your except for the sharpie for the outline. I just use black paint. Great job though.

That is how I did the tracing on mine, well done I might add. I used 5/8 plywood with white exterior and started delamination great the first rain. Maybe I will try the primer next time. Did you use a upgrade plywood (smooth finish ) BC PLYWOOD MAYBE.. I also used a router with a round over bit clean up the edges which possibly exposed too much of the laminated plywood which was only 5 ply.. Spar urethane must have made it really happen in the waterproofing situation. Well done video.
Thanks Rik! I used sanded plywood. I also painted and applied polyurethane to the sides. I’m concerned about de lamination but we have had a mild winter so far. I will let you know if I see any issues when we take them down next week.
I used Coroplast sheeting (corrugated plastic sheets) much easier to work with (and cheaper) than plywood. (Much lighter though…have to improvise for stand-up options.)
Wish you'd included the best way to support the design once it's finished. My house is situated in a cross-wind, so my designs are forever falling down, even when I think I've secured them well enough.
I will make a video next week. We are on a hill and also get a lot of wind. I use a piece of rebar and electrical conduit pipe brackets. I use 1 rebar for the smaller ones and 2 for the tree. This year I used a metal cutting jigsaw blade. It made a much cleaner cut.

Does it matter what brand of paint to use? How did you colour match? Thinking of making some but not sure what shades to get.
I used outdoor paint from Home Depot. I was able to match the colors pretty well by holding the picture on my phone to the color samples.

How long does it take you to make one ? Would love to do this but afraid of the time commitment if making multiple
