As a kid the episode where Clarence was “rebellious” actually made me emotional. It really resonated with me and felt very real to how I felt at that age.
Clarence was like one of those shows that had an awkward vibe to it but you still loved it anyways. It was awkward bc it was realistic, as a kid I never really realized that Jeff had two moms or that Chad wasn’t Clarence’s biodad, bc they were portrayed in a realistic way. It portrayed kids just being kids and just going around messing with things and having fun, it was realistic on how kids are, stupid, imaginative, and they know how to have fun, great show really sad it ended
I am 41 and I absolutely adored Clarence. Such a sweet and hilarious cartoon. Reminds me of my first school I ever attended. Everyone was friends. I had a sleepover in the 4th grade with 17 girls! When I changed schools I barely had any friends. It was nice to watch Clarence and reminisce.💚💚💚
Clarence was part of my childhood that honestly got overshadowed by Regular Show and Adventure Time. Thanks for bringing back some great memories of this show.
Man, Clarence is such a good show. It reflects childhood friendships, playfulness and innocence so well. All the characters are extremely relatable in different ways. Growing up I could relate to Jeff because I have pretty bad OCD, Clarence because I was hyperactive, and Sumo because I also had a big family and didn’t feel very seen by my parents. It was important to see that other kids struggled too, but learn that I can still have childish fun despite things being hard.
The most realistic part of this show is that the boys only find out each other's full names only 15 episodes later (At least a month in the show's timeline) by complete accident.
The critic back in the day judged this show pretty harsh. Every opinion on Clarence was that it was a terrible cartoon and too goofy. Everybody that watched it had some social pressure to say that it was a bad show when asked. But in the end, it doesn't even matters...We grew up and realized it was a masterpiece. Rest in piece 2010's Cartoon Network. The piece of art that defined my childhood, and many others.
I never understood the vitriol directed towards Clarence. They were never really clear about why they hated it even. I appreciated how creative but down-to-earth it was. If I had to guess, it’s because it’s not suited to binging in the way shows like Adventure Time or Regular Show are where the episodes are completely whacky and high-concept. A critic is going to binge a show, so I guess I understand why they might not like it, but it’s their job to separate their own personal experiences from the quality of the show.

@@funny_gaming_Pro I mean, not necessarily, Clarence maturing doesn't mean he HAS to lose his goofy stupidness that we all know and love, and there's still a lot of fun stuff they could do as college students. But yeah, I agree that continuing the Clarence show shouldn't happen cause we all know long running shows will eventually lose their quality.
For such a charming show, Clarence had a very dark overarching subplot that I don’t see many people taking about. The subplot in question is one involving Josh (the curly-haired, hook-armed, bad-tempered teen boy). After he loses his job in “Lost in the Supermarket” all thanks to Sumo and Clarence, the next time we see him, he has a new job as a park ranger in “Nature Clarence”, then next time he has a new job somewhere else and so on. Each time Sumo and Clarence encounter Josh, he loses a body part after a series of antics (losing a chunk of his hair, his ear getting chewed off by a goat, losing his right eye) and each time we see him, he has gained weight. He gains so much weight and grows his hair out, even getting a mustache, that he becomes completely unrecognizable when compared to the first time we ever saw him back in season 1. My theory here is that Josh is slowly losing a battle with depression, and no one realises it. In that one episode about that dog Chimney, I seem to recall him being high off shrooms or something, and I think that was his way of fighting that depression, idk. This is where it gets weird: There’s another episode where Clarence and the gang wind up at a teen house party, and at some point during this episode, I remember them running through the woods or something like that. In the background, we can see Josh and a group of other unidentified young people in a circle, sporting these long robes/cloaks. They seemed to be in the middle of performing some sort of occult ritual or something. My theory is that Josh got so depressed that a cult preyed on his vulnerability and indoctrinated him into their fold. Either that or HE started that cult, relying on supernatural means to deliver him from his aguish. Or maybe he grew resentful towards the world because it was never kind to him, and this cult is a form of retaliation or something, a way to reclaim his power. The scene is so fast, barely a frame, that if you blink you’ll miss it, but I think the stark juxtaposition of the popular kids at the house party and the ‘loser’ weirdos in a cult in the woods at night was the writers’ way of solidifying Josh’s downfall for us. Or maybe, because this is a slice of life show and everyone constantly has their own thing going on, that’s just what Josh has going on in his life. He started a cult and there’s no further explanation needed lol. I’ve looked high and low and even combed through the wiki but I can’t find any references by anyone to that half-scene or this entire subplot. Which has led me to believe that maybe I’m reading too much into it haha. My memory is a bit iffy so i may have gotten a few things wrong here, but if ANYONE knows what I’m talking about, please reveal yourself to me because this has been driving me crazy for the past six years now. I need someone, anyone, to scratch this itch.
Ok, I'm not really a huge fan of Clarence, just a watcher-by, but for your sanity's sake, I can confirm I've also seen that scene, but I believe there was a scene in that episode before that containing Josh. Also, I'm not sure, but I think those scenes were in the medieval fair episode, so there's that.
Agreed, not even family can touch my fries. It isn't about cleanliness, they are delicious and I want every last one. They are cheap (as food goes) and plentiful. Get your own damn fries.
I watch this show before somewhere in 2015 or 2016 I thought are mix because sometimes I don't like it because of some trauma a get and sometimes I watch with my younger sister because it just sometimes good but still I hate it
This was my favorite childhood show because it presented a reality where the “weird” kid wasn’t a social outcast. Like Clarence, I was also a “weird” kid. In the real world, most of the time, the “weird” kid is at the bottom of the ranks; which is what happened to me. I knew people, but no one ever hung out with me because of my “weird” kid status.
I am 32 years old, I was also that kid who would hang out in the back hall. Everyone at school called us "The Misfits", and despite "Social Ranks" I will say that on the other side of all of that I look back and am glad I wasn't a "Normie". That I had friends who challenged that norm and did not mind trolling the NPCs with me in a time where literally everyone was struggling to find their own identity. Just so happened we didn't really care being the scapegoats that the confused individuals would project onto, and honestly Clarence is a perfect representation of that. Still just being Clarence, and still just jamming out with his friends. If that's the experience you were able to find also then there is absolutely no reason to be ashamed of being the weird kid. If anything I realized as I got older some the ones who gave me flak secretly wished they were able to be as weird without having strict parental guidance every step of the way. Could maybe, potentially be a reason why you see people who are completely and seemingly "Normal" go completely crazy on paper as adults out of nowhere maybe? (Because they weren't allowed to be "Weird" in the environments they grew up in?) 😅 Clarence runs a lot more deeper than people realize.
Some added lore is that Belson mainly lives with his mother, because his father is a rich business man. Clarence ended up going into Belson's dad's office and is mistaken to be Belson, which shows how detached his father is from his family.
I agree, it didn't get enough love. I'm surprised there even was a video about it recently, Clarence held such a place in my heart!!! I loved it because it was realistic (a bit exaggerated maybe lol) it wasn't too serious or too fictional. it was just a regular kids life with their friends
The scene where Chad falls through the floor and everyone is screaming, and Sumo's dad is just laughing cemented him as my favorite character. That'd be me haha.
I didn't realize just how much I internalized the weird shit in this show. I always thought back to it as one of those one-off shows that I watched to pass time as a kid, but as it turns out, this exposed me to _most_ of the things that I'm interested in now. It was ridiculously nostalgic to hear that intro again. Thanks for the memories :)
What’s crazy to me is that I was watching this video thinking I watched a few episodes of Clarence when they were on but no, it looks like I watched the entirety of season 1 and half of 2 and 3 and even had a weird dreamy memory of an episode I thought happened but didn’t
@@amoatlas the episode I dreamt up was based on one episode that did actually happen, I know that it was a dream however because my sister was in it among other differences
Chad is honestly my favorite character in the show. I grew up without seeing my dad much because my parents got divorced when I was very young, so I have a stepdad. Chad clearly tries his hardest to be a good father figure for Clarence and if you have a stepdad or step parent, that’s really all you could ask for. Just someone who you may not be blood related to you, but still loves you unconditionally and tries to fill a vacancy no matter what situation you’re in.
The reason a lot of people loved Clearance is because they could relate to their socio economic upbringing. A lot of us grew up semi poor or poor asf and can relate to it.
Clarence is a great show. It was from a time where you kinda had to give something for all ages in a show and Clarence does it right. It's a silly relatable show to watch and give ideas on what to do to kids when I was little, and looking back on it now that I'm older, is a treat to nostalgia, helps bring back the child in you, and like lots of cartoons around this golden age, has some really heartfelt and sometimes down right dark and "wow" moments, such as in the erratic rock episode with Amy down right says her family is dealing with a divorce.
for real though, i never had much friends growing up but when i ever did play with said friends, it has the same feel of watching clarence on his adventures lmao.
man this show got overshadowed by others that were dominating at the time but i loved it. As someone that grew up poor with a single mother and a small amount of friends this show hit unnecessarily hard sometimes
I didn’t necessarily grow up poor but not rich but I do relate to only having a couple friends but I’m actually happy for that since I found my self becoming way closer with them
I related a lot to this show in many ways growing up. I grew up with a stepdad and my mom, I was always weird and a bit dumb lol but it never bothered me or my friends. Also it was one of the only kid showed my mom actually really liked. She loved how the parents and the kids relationships were portrayed and she thought it was actually funny.
This show was an absolute gem to me. No matter when I went on Cartoon Network, there would always have been Clarence just right around the corner for me. I loved it, binged watched it, and even planned things to see the new episodes. A shame why it got cancelled and discontinued though, I really liked the series and thought it could go on for at least 2 more seasons. There wasn't a single Clarence episode I hadn't watched. And the moment you showed the clip of an episode, I would remember it.
You forgot to mention a very famous theory that is more than likely 100% real. In the star episode, at 5:27 you can clearly see Jeff pushing Gilben to the floor and him landing on a very specific way. Before that episode he behaved normally but after that he barely changed from the position he fell to the floor in, which means that the fall caused by Jeff probably paralyzed Gilben from then on
It could very well be true, to support this theory Gilben fell on his back which could have shattered his spine. Your spine being one of the most fragile bones in your body it can easily get a fracture and damage the nerve around it, giving you partial or full paralysis depending on the place where it shattered.
The first time that I saw the episode where Clarence played with Amy, I straight up cried when she talked about how she doesn't know which parent she's going to be living with. At the time I was going through a divorce and things were really not good. Clarence should have gotten so much more recognition for the good show that it was
The entire show and the children’s behavior in it makes a lot more sense if you view Jeff through the lens of someone with autism, or severe sensory issues, and view Clarence & Sumo as folks with ADHD. My belief goes as follows Jeff has a form of autism, high functioning, of course, but leaves him with severe sensory issues and hyper cleanliness. Clarence has a form of mid functioning autism, along with adhd. This means he is sometimes reckless, does things before thinking, and behaves far differently than other children. He may have sensory needs that may not fit with “other” autistic folks, leading him to not understand why others do not function the same as him. Sumo has ADHD. This is lead by his extreme hyperactivity, lack of attention to school and topics he is not very passionate about, and his overall disregard for consequences and how his actions affect him or others. All of the boys’ behaviors are nearly down to the blueprint “stereotypical” or, for better words, the MOST COMMONLY SHOWN behaviors within each disability. From my experience as someone, who, like I believe Clarence does, has adhd & autism.. I can say that many of my friends share my mental struggles. Children with disabilities will, even unconsciously, seek out others who replicate and soothe them and their needs.
I hate that nowadays kids are into some “mental illness” stuff. Stop making a big deal out of getting a little amount of attention from parents (ADHD).
I only really watched the first season of Clarence, but I’ll say that as a college student, me and my friends are having a blast watching it now. It’s ridiculous, silly, but always so endearing. It’s messages are so real and it’s events feel nostalgic for how they closely line up with my childhood. Really a diamond buried in the dirt
Underrated show , this show was really relatable every time I watched the show as a little kid it felt like I was watching something that would probably happened to me, made it feel like I was in the world. As a adult now the show is still very fun and relatable
For some reason, every episode I see in this video it's like a memory just washed over me and I now remember everything. I truly don't remember any of these episodes until they're brought up.
being real here, the clarence dollars episode solely taught me what supply and demand are, and whenever i learn somethng new regarding economy i think back to this show. it's amazing how amidst the chaos they could use a subject as "adult" as flooding a market and yet i understood it all as a kid.
Clarence showed unconventual family types. Something that isn’t shown on tv in possible light. I’m happy they hit almost all the marks with the main threes family. Gay parents, trailer park parents, and non married step dad with mom. I loved it as a kid and I appreciate it now.
the reason it's underrated is because it's one of the first shows that transitioned from cartoons being about a show that was enjoyable with a story, to goofy stupidness with no thought put into it. It just wasn't that generations cup of tea, to put it simply
Cartoon Network didn't advertise it much after the first few episodes due to Skylar Page having a mental breakdown and not being involved with the show from then on.
@Tk--cp9xw realistic? Sure. Stupid nonsense? Also true. They're not mutually exclusive, it's just that the issue is this one is entirely based on like a 4 year old. No attention span. Adventure time has way more story. And now most cartoons are like this
@@got_beef8029The show connected to me in a way adventure time couldnt as i lived through the struggles in clarence life but lived it how he did and was mostly blind to it Now that reality hit me im just that quiet kid everyone dosent understand all that well and i am now seeing the flaws in my family from drugs to control and the economy effecting my mother in a hard way as we can barely buy food. I saw myself in clarence somewhat i cannot ever what the two titans of cartoon network regularshow and Adventure time and see myself in the character I Just watched them casue the story was cool. Except for regular show actually.
While I do love a good plot with fleshed out characters its nice to have shows that u can pop into any time an not really have to worry about missing out on dozens of hours of storyline. I'd say Clarence is comparable to shows like gumball because of that relative lack of complex plot prior. Where gumball soared due to a variety of its factors like its much more creative art style, clarence fell short because of the advertising problems among other things like the Skylar Page situation plus its much shorter running time. Both types of cartoons (complex plot & one off) are enjoyable in their own right
Clarence always hit different when I watched it forever ago. It felt so real compared to other cartoons. Each kid is the type of kid you knew growing up
Never liked Clarence for the gross stuff, but I need to say that it's story was incredibly good (for a kid cartoon) and it's characters were explored in multiple episodes with multiple points and callbacks.
It's nice, but not nice enough that I would literally sit down and actually watch it. I just feel like it's too jumbled up and it makes it feel strange. To me, it's unenjoyable because of how random the episodes are because first it's one place, than right after it it's another. The only episodes I actually understood were the 6 episodes for the stormy sleepover. Other than that, I could barely understand what was even happening.
I know this show isn't that old but its been long enough since I watched it that seeing each scene hit me with a huge wave a nostalgia. This might be the only 2010s show I actually watched the entirety of.
My sister unironically loves this show! As a matter of fact, she told me a fun fact that I don’t think many people know about. The fun fact is; Belson is voiced by Rodger Craig Smith, the modern voice of Sonic the Hedgehog.
I was a Clarence as a kid. Through and through. I got knocked down, I would cry, but then I would get back up with my teeth kicked it a little... I walked in front of the swings a lot as a kid. Though, that also means I went through what Clarence did at the end of the series. Parents divorced at grade 2, I got diagnosed with depression at grade 6, my mom just disappeared for a couple of years after that, and by middle school I was losing my friends because I was, according to my still best friend, becoming less like myself. Growing up is a beeeeeeaytch, especially when you feel cornered and feel like you're supposed to change. Even then, I didn't watch this show all the way through until a year ago, and oh my god, this show hit me like a train.
I grew up watching this show and I think this video is brilliant, it's a perfect flash back and I believe it's good for kids as well, no unnecessary bad language, no weird ideas it's just wonderful
This show was the best every episode for me was worth waiting for , and i wished it had more episodes. I was still a kid back then and i actually wanted to recreate everything they did with my friends who also loved the show. I missed this show
Man, I miss Clarence! I’m grown and used to watch that show with my daughter all the time. It got to the point that when it was on and she wasn’t around I’d still watch it myself lol.
I loved Clarence so much back in the day, relatable and funny childhood mishaps with sharp and witty writing. Steven Universe and Adventure Time were CN's big moneymakers, but I'm glad this show is seeing a lot of love.
Unfortunately, when Clarence came out I wasn't into it I was already 21 but watching it with my son and my wife's younger brother. Watching this makes me want to go back and watch it with him because these shows were so good along with adventure time and Steve universe
To be honest, people who hated the show always had the most minor and cherry-picked reasons to hate it, looking back as an early adult, I actually don’t think it was THAT bad, it was unique in a way
it's definitely not everyone's pick because it's too "weird" or nothing visually exciting, but it reflected on real life. we all have so much real life drama and angst. just have some silly kids who do silly things
I remember seeing promos for this show when it was originally airing and I never tuned in because I was more into Regular Show, Adventure Time & Steven Universe. I didn’t discover how great this show was until my younger brother was watching it on HULU and it literally made me stop what I was doing and made me genuinely laugh. I went on to watch it beginning to end and I never seen a show depict a child so realistic like this show did. The way he talks, see things, his feelings when he gets passionate about something, how he feels when he is upset, the activities he finds interesting and fun are all things I could have relate to when I was his age. I regret not watching while it was airing but I’m glad it’s on streaming services where I can rewatch it again and again. 10/10 highly recommend it to older and newer generations.
I remember Clarence. I wasn’t even a child but I enjoyed it immensely 😭 I could relate to Jeff, so personally, I loved being able to see him in his friend group (as I struggle at making friends). Plus I enjoyed the dorky, childish humor
I think as a kid, I was too blinded by the crude visuals and odd stories to really see the actual plot and message. this is actually helpful. I always thought it was a terrible show all together lol
when me and my brother were about 9 or 10 or so, we used to watch this with our dad, who liked it. our dad has recently passed in September. I'm gonna try to warch as much as this show as I can, i feel like that would make him happy
Clarence was one of my favorite cartoons of the 2010’s, it’s so fun and carefree just like Clarence himself. Too bad it got cancelled and wasn’t very loved

Damn bro that’s deep wish nun but the best for you dawg

Relatable bro
(Because they weren't allowed to be "Weird" in the environments they grew up in?) 😅
Clarence runs a lot more deeper than people realize.

Fun Dungeon Face-Off is one of my favorite and most memorable, childhood show episodes of all time.
Or when the mayor literally dies in a helicopter crash.

There wasn't a single Clarence episode I hadn't watched. And the moment you showed the clip of an episode, I would remember it.
I rewatched this show plenty of times and never got bored
You seem like a true fan of Clarence! And so do I! I just wished it went on for longer.

Goddamn I hated this show
This show feels like a dream: short, remembering bits and pieces and a weird sense of deja vu on occasion.
My belief goes as follows
Jeff has a form of autism, high functioning, of course, but leaves him with severe sensory issues and hyper cleanliness.
Children with disabilities will, even unconsciously, seek out others who replicate and soothe them and their needs.
not that deep bro also doesn't matter if he has autism you should view it the same way you monkey
I disagree with Jeff having autism. He is a germaphobe and potentially a form of ocd
I hate that nowadays kids are into some “mental illness” stuff. Stop making a big deal out of getting a little amount of attention from parents (ADHD).

This isn’t Kanye west’s story 😢
When his mom's busted out with food stamps it showed me it was more or less realistic
