  • The Honda Clarity has a small engine and can be loud at times. In this video we test the loudness of the 2018 Honda Clarity in different scenarios. Also, your top 10 comments are addressed:
    1. Did you Buy the Clarity Locally: Yes, at I-79 Honda / i79hondamazda1
    2. Do you Know what it will Tow? The answer I have found is 2000 pounds.
    3. Is it Necessary to Use Premium Gas? No, but I prefer it.
    4. What price do you think is reasonable? Between 20k and 25k for a used Clarity.
    5. How do you like this car? Love it. Will always drive a plug-in car after owning this one.
    6. Have you been able to estimate the cost of electricity use? At most, for me, $9 a month. This is calculated as an average based on a year over year comparison. I have not tried to measure my total KWh consumption.
    7. How long did the factory tires last? 19,000 miles.
    8. How do you use HV mode? You can turn it on to preserve your last few miles of EV range in order to maintain performance. You can also use it to save your EV range for in-town driving and use Gas on the highway, in an attempt to be more efficient.
    9. How is the Cabin Noise? Cabin noise is low, if you own a comparable gasoline powered Honda, the noise level is similar.
    10. Is there a big difference in Economy at Higher speed? Yes, over the speed limit you can expect your fuel economy to decrease due to the size of the car compared to the size of the engine (1.5L)

Thanks for doing this video, I've watched and enjoyed all of them.
One additional point on HV Mode. You mentioned the "short push" for maintaining your current battery charge so that it's available for when your back in town. There's also the "long push" which charges your depleted battery to about 57% while you're highway driving so that you have EV Mode available for you when back to city driving. The HV Mode(s) and the engine noise are probably the 2 most misunderstood things about the Clarity.

We bought a 2019 Clarity new in November 2019. It simply is an amazing car. Like you, I don't think I will ever own a non-hybrid vehicle again. All our driving is in the city (mostly non-highway). We regularly drive 500+ miles between visits to the gas station; where we put in 5 gallons of gas ($3.49 a gallon in California). So we love the gas mileage.
I use sport mode if I have 4 adults in the car. (4 adults fit comfortably by the way) It makes reaching highway speeds easy. Friends who have been in the car always comment on the quiet performance and comfort.
Keeping some battery life and driving in HV minimizes the noise coming from the engine and maximizes the mpg. The "angry bee" noise only comes on in full throttle or high speed highway driving (80 mph) when there is not enough charge in the battery. I suspect that the low friction tires use a very hard compound on the tread and that causes the only noise we notice most of the time.
Personally I love the lane keep assist function the best. Driving on a 5 lane freeway at 75 mph is stressful at times. Having the LKA on means the car won't wonder if I am momentarily distracted.

@@randomvideotosee we have 31,000 miles on it and it has been very reliable. The shift control module had to be replaced last month, but it was covered by the warranty. There was a work around, so it didn't hinder our use of the vehicle until we got it to the dealer. In warm weather we get 44 miles+ on a charge, in 30 degree weather we get 39+ miles on a charge. We will probably need tires in 10k to 15k miles. I find that on trips long enough to need the engine I switch to HV mode with 17+ miles of range left, which keeps the engine noise down to a whisper, even on hills.

The premium gas vs regular gas is a myth that's been busted MANY times by reputable sources over the years. Premium gas is NOT better EXCEPT for engines that REQUIRE premium. Most cars DO NOT require premium and DO NOT run better or more efficiently on premium.

Great video. I have some information to share
    1. You cannot purchase a Clarity at any dealer. Honda will tell you can (or not depending on who you reach at Honda corporate). There have been numerous reports on forums of buyers being flat refused even if they say they won't buy any other Honda from the dealer.
    2. Premium gasoline is not required. This is an Atkinson engine and they run just fine on 87 or higher octane. Page 566 of the owners manual. I've put the lowest grade gas in for 1 1/2 years with the same response as the one time I filled it with premium.
    3. The chance of gasoline going bad is slim. The tank is pressurized just for that reason. Honda knew that gas was not going to be used that much and the pressurized tank keeps it fresh for a long time. I'm sure you've noticed that you have to push that button and wait until the pressure is released before you can open the filler cover.
4.The proper use of HV mode is to maintain the level of drive battery charge. It will maintain the level of charge at approximately 55% (or less depending on the drive battery level when you start HV) and the engine will stop and start as needed. HV Plus mode is used to charge the battery constantly. If you HV+ the engine will not stop and start. It will run non-stop.The biggest problem with these modes is that you have to activate them after stopping for gas, etc.
    5. Sport mode does not use the engine unless the pedal is pushed past the "click" The difference between Sport and EV is the distance required to press the pedal for the same amount of acceleration. Sport simply remaps the pedal to respond quicker.
    6. Engine noise. It is loud when it enters Angry Bees bode, which is what we call that loud revving. When I drive my 2008 Sorento it is louder. Angry Bees mode is annoying because we are used to the car being so quiet. Newer cars are quieter so the difference is more noticeable.
    7. You mentioned the mileage being all over the place. That's why we call those numbers the Guess-O-Meter.
I've driven ours at 98mph (Don't ask. don't tell). Angry Bees woke up, but the car handled it beautifully.
We have had our Clarity since the first of May 2019. We love this car. Quirks and all.

@Johnny Lee True, and thank you for mentioning it. I should have. There are dealers outside of California that still stock them, but very few, and only because they requested them from Honda. Honda is concentrating on ZEV requirements which is why they pulled the stock back to California. They actually pulled vehicles off dealer lots in other states and shipped to California. I'm not sure bout other ZEV states, but it would be something to look into.

I just bought a 2018 Clarity with 26,000 miles on it. ($23k) I've had it for less than a month, and the previous owner didn't seem able to give much explanation about the electric versus hybrid situation as he drove only electric at all times.
I've taken two 120 mi highway trips each way so far.
On the first trip from New York to Pennsylvania I didn't hear any additional engine noise at any point. On yesterday's trip, 60 mi down the New Jersey turnpike I heard a sound like a loud pickup was passing me in the next Lane. When that never happened I realized, Oh, this is me. Luckily a service area was 2 miles ahead. I pulled over and called the previous owner and he said yes it's nothing to worry about. But I really still had no idea what it was and I started watching videos. Yours was excellent, but I feel like you all have a lot of understanding of how these hybrid vehicles work, which I don't. And the manual is useless, unless you have all that knowledge already. ( I also tried to use a public charger for the first time down here in Pennsylvania yesterday but the snow storm increased and I had to give up.)
I've been loving this Clarity based on the electric use around home, but since this noise started yesterday on this long distance highway trip, I really don't know what I'm doing and what to do to make it better. If someone could please give me the really simple this is what you do when you have to go farther than your electric battery will take you to keep the noise down (and still be as environmentally friendly as possible) I'd be very grateful.
And, how do the paddles function???
Thank you, all, for the helpful video and comments.

      @Aslash304  2 года назад +2

Paddles increase Regen breaking. You can tap once, or up to three times in either direction to increase or decrease the amount of regen. If you are going to travel more than your electric range will allow, make sure you press the hybrid vehicle mode button for a one count to engage regular hybrid vehicle mode with 10 miles of range remaining. This will keep enough electric range to keep your engine from sounding like it’s going to explode. If you forget, and run out of electric range, then press and hold the hybrid vehicle mode button until the HV charge mode is engaged. This will charge your engine back to around 50%. It will sound like someone is going to blow up your card for that period of time, but at least it will be over. The best way to travel on the interstate in your car when you know your trip is going to be longer than your electric range, is to engage sport mode after about 10 miles of electric travel. Save your electricity for street driving, not highway. I have a ton of videos about all of these topics, please feel free to peruse my channel, thank you so much for your comment. I know you will enjoy your new car.

What you are saying is that the clarity is different in that once the motor turns on, it is then like a regular car and the rpms vary with the speed and terrain.

Premium gas will increase fuel consumption on Atkinson cycle engines such as in Honda Clarity. Reason being is the construction of such motors imitating lower compression of an Atkinson (by keeping a valve semi closed on compression). The ignited mixture of premium gas will exit the cylinders at faster rates than the regular gas producing no desired effects of higher compression and economy observed in regular internal combustion engines.

Use only non-ethanol gasoline. Premium gasoline has ethanol which attracts water and degrades quickly.

Yes it’s a terrible misconception on your part, feeling up with the wrong octane gas will be a costly mistake for you or the next owner. Like your videos though 👍
