Filming for that started only a couple of months after this installment of WML. So funny his "Danielle, may I call you Danielle?" Arlene's rejoinder "Be careful at all times!" These moments must tug at the heartstrings of their son, Peter, if he watches these clips.
28 Barbary Lane Yep I have to be honest it's taken about a hundred episodes for me to see how saucy showbiz Arlene is compatible with ordinary old bank manager-type Gabel. The banter here proves they were in very good shape as a couple. Still surprised that Arlene didn't have someone more handsome and tactile though.

The Fischer quintuplets were certainly topical at the time of this episode: they were born only 8 days before it aired. The quints (4 girls and 1 boy) made national news and received telegrams from numerous luminaries, including President and Mrs. Kennedy. Their mother passed away in 2012 at age 79 and their father in 2015 at age 89. As of the most recent article I can find about the quints, dated 26 July 2020, all of them were still alive.
Oh this was a really funny episode. This funny quarreling between Arleen and Martin was so lovely to look at. One can see, this two understand and respect each other very well, irregardless this show quarrel. And it's fun to watch, as always.
Interesting mis-matched couple in terms of looks. Why would Arlene be worried of his wandering eye? Hes not attractive at all. She married for money and/or brilliance? He's funny, too. Would love to see them off-stage.

She passed away on January 25, AD 2016 at the age of 99. The quints celebrated their 50th birthdays in 2013; a year or so after their mother, Mrs. Mary Ann Fischer, passed away.
People have accused Bennett Cerf of hogging a segment in an egotistical way. Explain to me how this equates with his generous passing to Dorothy after she had offered a suggestion for his next question and it turning out to be correct. To me that is excellent panel etiquette, as ever and is true to the form I tend to notice.
I've seen every episode so far. Bennett Cerf is a sniveling little 14-year-old in a grown man's body. He is what's known as an upstager, camera hog, mic hog, etc. He says grossly inappropriate things to both guests and occasionally other panelists. His jokes are forced, not usually funny, and pathetic for an adult. My dog makes better puns than he does. The only reason he ever acquiesces to anyone else is to look magnanimous. He is a disgrace, and is the weakest part of the show.
I love Bennett and you're right that this was a fine example of panel etiquette. I was surprised, however, that he complained about the guest's answer about being east of the Mississippi. Obviously, she was wrong and everyone knew it, but it must have been embarrassing for her to be challenged in this way during her moment on national TV. I think he should have let that one go.
@@kenretherford1197 - Not so sure about that. Read her book.. it's a pretty interesting story. Martin was kind of a hero and mentor to her. A very successful producer and stage actor in his own right - as well as a Tony Award winner. Neat guy.
I was totally floored in the first game when it came out that John Daily thought that the source of the Mississippi River began in Montana. He has traveled all over the world and didn't know it starts in Minnesota. This flub totally misled the panel. He very rarely ever did that.
The bodies-by-Fisher comment was probably a reference to the Fisher Body, which manufactured car bodies (for GM in particular) and had the slogan "Body by Fisher" attached to its works.
It is odd that the first guest incorrectly answered that she worked east of the Mississippi. John should have known that the Mississippi River starts in Minnesota. Aberdeen, North Dakota, is west of the Mississippi. John is so knowledgeable on a variety of subjects that his thinking the river rises in Montana and west of the Dakotas was surprising. In the next week's episode, he sort of humorously excuses himself by virtue of the fact that he was an expectant father at the time and therefore couldn't be expected to be functioning at his best. (His son was apparently born the day after this episode aired.)
Don't be stupid! Newsmen are likely well-versed in public affairs and current events. But to expect geographical expertise is pushing it...especially for someone not born in the United States (he was South African by birth).!
That was an awful blunder by 2 professional people. They could be forgiven for not knowing where Moldova or the Vistula River is, but South Dakota and the Mississippi? Oh well, it's all for fun anyway.

I had to look on my map as to where the Mississippi River starts, and it does in Minnesota, a fer piece east of South Dakota, where the Quintuplets lived. I wonder (be honest now) how many of us knew where it started? I guess most people know it let's out into the Gulf Of Mexico at New Orleans.
John Daly had the Missouri River part right; it rises in Montana, the state that is on the western border of the Dakotas. The Mississippi rises in Minnesota, the state on the eastern border of the Dakotas. The two meet in Missouri, decidedly southeast of the Dakotas on account of the sharp eastward wandering of the Missouri River www2.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2013-06/gulfofmexico.jpg . romeman01 I have a cousin, who is now in his 80's. When he was three years old he could name all of the state capitals and many foreign ones as well. He went on to have a fine career as a linguist and professor of languages. As for me, and I'll bet many others here, I am so used to looking at a map of the United States with the names of the states included I have been corrupted some when it comes to naming the states from a raw map. I'm pretty sure I could do at least half, but that's not good enough. I'll have to test myself on it.

I liked Martin's reaction of mock indignation to the geographical error, acting as if that was the pivotal piece of information that steered the panel in the wrong direction. He knew they were nowhere close to guessing her occupation, no matter which side of the Mississippi she worked.
I think Cerf’s ‘starting late’ is one of his best witticisms of the show’s long run. I’m surprised the audience didn’t roar. Maybe it didn’t play as well in the house because of the acoustics, etc.
I think most of us have read of Dorothy's 6 story dwelling on Park Avenue. I wonder if there are pictures of it on the web. But what about Bennett and Arlene. My understanding is that they lived out of town, but did they have pied-à-terre's or larger accommodations in the city, or a main home in the city as well. What about John Daly's abode?
That unfortunate barbell incident occurred outside of the Gabels' New York apartment at the Ritz Towers on East 57th St., just off of Park Avenue. I believe that's where the gloriously campy photos from Arlene's "No Time For Cooking" book were taken, as well.

(Said the floorwalker... ;) Many psychologists are operating with the term "sympathetic drinking", which is when one part in a relationship drinks, the other part begins with sharing a drink or two, and after a while, some of them (quite a lot, according to a friend who works with the issue) are drinking more and more frequently, very often ending up in a worse condition than the first, often more "trained" part.
Marlene could be very flirtatious with men who she thought were good looking but when Martin seemed like he was flirting, she did not like that one bit
Gary, I just found out what happened, and I have to say that I am nothing short of appalled. Just please, do not watermark your videos from now on. In my honest opinion, they are unnecessary, and do not look good at all. They can even obscure certain things in the videos, too. Having a GSN bug, or no GSN bug, is enough. Besides, I'm sure more than enough people can easily tell apart your channel from fakes/duplicates. And even if you did watermark them, they would still try to steal your videos anyways, and zoom-in or blur to remove said watermarks. Just continue uploading them in the way you have always done so. Please trust me on this one. And finally, do not let this individual bully you, if he threatens you to leave RUclips.

See my response to romeman01 If I can find this channel (no luck so far), I'll try to address this, but all I can really do is explain to whoever this is that what they're doing is undermining this effort and hope that the person has a conscience. I'm not going to stop posting the shows and I'm not going to mutilate them further with my own watermark. They're not "my" shows, I just have copies of them, many of which were *shared* with me, so there's not a whole lot I can do. But I would not have known anything about this without the alert from you, romeman01 and soulierinvestments, so I really wanted to express my appreciation. It's been a joy to see the development of a community of intelligent, polite commenters on these videos.
Just learning about it now! I have no idea what's going on and so far can't even find the channel in question. But I really appreciate the heads up. I just wrote long responses to romeman01 and ***** if you're interested-- I don't want to repeat myself, except to say thank you for letting me know. Let's hope the person who's doing this just doesn't understand that's it's not a nice thing to do. If it's an intentional attempt at direct competition (using videos downloaded from my channel!), there's almost nothing I can do to stop it.
Are the mystery guests paid to appear like the panelists are? I wondered because the MacRaes have been mystery guests quite often in the last few months and i know there was a time when Gordon wasn't making many films anymore and rumors of alleged excessive drinking abounded. Plus they were doing a lot of nightclub and hotel engagements and Sheila was working again with him after leaving show business upon their marriage. Made me think they might have been having financial issues at the time.
Isn't this a strange episode? Two long and unsuccessful attempts at guessing the regular contestants, followed by a quick identification of the mystery guests, which was a good thing, since not much time was left. And more erroneous takes on things than one is used to seeing: Mississippi River geography, whether the first contestant's work is related to health, whether the second one's product is outdoors...No one covered himself or herself with glory this week, including the tellers of jokes.
I want to say to the channel owner that I am desolated to see whole episodes that you have already uploaded appearing in a "What's my line?" channel created one day ago with lower-cased letters in the channel name instead of the upper cased letters in your name. (I am presuming, surely correctly, that you are not duplicating your own channel.) A host of What's My Line? fans are deeply appreciative of your dedicated work and respectful of it. Since the demise of NorbertR33's channel, which existed for many years here and was an institution, I have tried to restore some of his individual mystery guest clips on my own channel, but there are quite a few that I have been biding my time on restoring to RUclips, and why? Specifically out of respect for your channel. Your own presentation of the full episodes in which the clips appear was only a couple of months old and I wanted to give people plenty of time and opportunity to come and see the full episode on your channel from which the mystery guest appearance had been taken. So there is appreciation of what you are doing and I want to take this opportunity once again to thank you for your kindness and generosity.
I just woke up a few minutes ago, dutifully checked my notifications as I always do, and see a bunch of messages about my videos being reposted. I have no idea what's going on but I really appreciate the heads up. Sometimes people just don't know any better. That kind of thing has happened before and sometimes can be addressed by sending a message to the person, assuming that what's going on here is an honest mistake rather than a crass attempt at competition. So far I can't even find the channel with the duplicated videos, but maybe I'll figure that out after I've had some coffee and shaken the cobwebs out of my head. Thanks very much for the kind words, and for deferring your own postings (which I had no idea about, I really started the whole channel on a lark). You really didn't have to do that, but it was very nice of you. Wow-- I found the channel. And I'll be pretty shocked if this is just an honest mistake. This person isn't just duplicating my videos, they've duplicated the channel name, video titles and the exact descriptions. That amounts to impersonating my account, a clear violation of RUclips's policies. Pretty outrageous.

This is, however, a *clear* violation of RUclips policy, as you pointed out. Unbelievable.

I had to look on my map as to where the Mississippi River starts, and it does in Minnesota, a fer piece east of South Dakota, where the Quintuplets lived. I wonder (be honest now) how many of us knew where it started? I guess most people know it let's out into the Gulf Of Mexico at New Orleans.
John Daly had the Missouri River part right; it rises in Montana, the state that is on the western border of the Dakotas. The Mississippi rises in Minnesota, the state on the eastern border of the Dakotas. The two meet in Missouri, decidedly southeast of the Dakotas on account of the sharp eastward wandering of the Missouri River www2.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2013-06/gulfofmexico.jpg . And in answer to your question ... if my life had depended on me talking to you about rivers rising and about where these specific rivers rose, I would not be here writing this message to you right now. :-) But I take some comfort in the fact that the US government map that I just posted labels both Kansas and Kentucky as TX (Texas), which may be even more troubling than my and John Daly's ignorance of rivers. :-))
romeman01 I have a cousin, who is now in his 80's. When he was three years old he could name all of the state capitals and many foreign ones as well. He went on to have a fine career as a linguist and professor of languages. As for me, and I'll bet many others here, I am so used to looking at a map of the United States with the names of the states included I have been corrupted some when it comes to naming the states from a raw map. I'm pretty sure I could do at least half, but that's not good enough. I'll have to test myself on it.

Yes, I knew that the headwaters of the Mississippi River were located in Minnesota, north of Minneapolis-St. Paul, even before I crossed the Mississippi in July 2009 (traveling from the US Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth (MN) to Fargo (ND) on a bridge that didn't require the road to be elevated (Minnesota Route 200, just west of the Jacobson Post Office). Only the sign lets one know for sure that it eventually becomes the mighty Mississippi.

I recall at one time the headwaters of the Mississippi were considered as beginning at Lake Winnibigsohish, but now geologists have defined the river as flowing past that lake through a chain of more lakes, first west and then back south until it reaches Lake Itasca (about 15 miles SW of Bemidji as the crow flies).
Except during Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is not on the Gulf Coast. The Mississippi continues to flow through bayous until the river splits at its southern end at the Gulf of Mexico. Where the main channel enters the Gulf is currently about 70 miles SSW of the southern tip of New Orleans as that busy crow flies. (Do crows fly straighter than other birds?)
The Lewis & Clark expedition followed the Missouri River upstream from its origin near St. Louis until its headwaters in Montana at the confluence of three rivers within less than a half mile of each other. None of the rivers could be considered superior to the other two so none of them are considered a continuation upstream of the Missouri. Knowing they owed the funding of the expedition to the government, they did the politically expedient thing and named these three branches the Jefferson (President Thomas), Madison (Secretary of State James) and Gallatin (Secretary of the Treasury Albert).

In July 2010, I had a picturesque ride alongside the Gallatin River on US 191 SW of Bozeman (MT) into the NW corner of Yellowstone National Park until crossing over briefly into Wyoming.
I knew the Mississippi River started in Minnesota. I think of it as a natural boundary. Hence, the Gateway to the West (Gateway Arch in St. Louis) is on the west bank of the Mississippi River. It was a starting point for westward expansion, as you probably already know. Terri Johnson
I liked Martin's reaction of mock indignation to the geographical error, acting as if that was the pivotal piece of information that steered the panel in the wrong direction. He knew they were nowhere close to guessing her occupation, no matter which side of the Mississippi she worked.
I think Cerf’s ‘starting late’ is one of his best witticisms of the show’s long run. I’m surprised the audience didn’t roar. Maybe it didn’t play as well in the house because of the acoustics, etc.

My understanding is that they lived out of town, but did they have pied-à-terre's or larger accommodations in the city, or a main home in the city as well. What about John Daly's abode?
That unfortunate barbell incident occurred outside of the Gabels' New York apartment at the Ritz Towers on East 57th St., just off of Park Avenue. I believe that's where the gloriously campy photos from Arlene's "No Time For Cooking" book were taken, as well.

(Said the floorwalker... ;) Many psychologists are operating with the term "sympathetic drinking", which is when one part in a relationship drinks, the other part begins with sharing a drink or two, and after a while, some of them (quite a lot, according to a friend who works with the issue) are drinking more and more frequently, very often ending up in a worse condition than the first, often more "trained" part.
Arlene was really jealous of that Mademoiselle! 😜

Gary, I just found out what happened, and I have to say that I am nothing short of appalled.
Just please, do not watermark your videos from now on. In my honest opinion, they are unnecessary, and do not look good at all. They can even obscure certain things in the videos, too. Having a GSN bug, or no GSN bug, is enough. Besides, I'm sure more than enough people can easily tell apart your channel from fakes/duplicates. And even if you did watermark them, they would still try to steal your videos anyways, and zoom-in or blur to remove said watermarks. Just continue uploading them in the way you have always done so. Please trust me on this one.
And finally, do not let this individual bully you, if he threatens you to leave RUclips.

If I can find this channel (no luck so far), I'll try to address this, but all I can really do is explain to whoever this is that what they're doing is undermining this effort and hope that the person has a conscience. I'm not going to stop posting the shows and I'm not going to mutilate them further with my own watermark. They're not "my" shows, I just have copies of them, many of which were *shared* with me, so there's not a whole lot I can do.
But I would not have known anything about this without the alert from you, romeman01 and soulierinvestments, so I really wanted to express my appreciation. It's been a joy to see the development of a community of intelligent, polite commenters on these videos.

Just learning about it now! I have no idea what's going on and so far can't even find the channel in question. But I really appreciate the heads up. I just wrote long responses to romeman01 and ***** if you're interested-- I don't want to repeat myself, except to say thank you for letting me know. Let's hope the person who's doing this just doesn't understand that's it's not a nice thing to do. If it's an intentional attempt at direct competition (using videos downloaded from my channel!), there's almost nothing I can do to stop it.

Are the mystery guests paid to appear like the panelists are? I wondered because the MacRaes have been mystery guests quite often in the last few months and i know there was a time when Gordon wasn't making many films anymore and rumors of alleged excessive drinking abounded. Plus they were doing a lot of nightclub and hotel engagements and Sheila was working again with him after leaving show business upon their marriage. Made me think they might have been having financial issues at the time.
Mystery Guests were paid as well. I don't recall the amount, and I'm sure it varied, but it might have been $500 at this time.

Isn't this a strange episode? Two long and unsuccessful attempts at guessing the regular contestants, followed by a quick identification of the mystery guests, which was a good thing, since not much time was left. And more erroneous takes on things than one is used to seeing: Mississippi River geography, whether the first contestant's work is related to health, whether the second one's product is outdoors...No one covered himself or herself with glory this week, including the tellers of jokes.

I want to say to the channel owner that I am desolated to see whole episodes that you have already uploaded appearing in a "What's my line?" channel created one day ago with lower-cased letters in the channel name instead of the upper cased letters in your name. (I am presuming, surely correctly, that you are not duplicating your own channel.) A host of What's My Line? fans are deeply appreciative of your dedicated work and respectful of it. Since the demise of NorbertR33's channel, which existed for many years here and was an institution, I have tried to restore some of his individual mystery guest clips on my own channel, but there are quite a few that I have been biding my time on restoring to RUclips, and why? Specifically out of respect for your channel. Your own presentation of the full episodes in which the clips appear was only a couple of months old and I wanted to give people plenty of time and opportunity to come and see the full episode on your channel from which the mystery guest appearance had been taken. So there is appreciation of what you are doing and I want to take this opportunity once again to thank you for your kindness and generosity.
I just woke up a few minutes ago, dutifully checked my notifications as I always do, and see a bunch of messages about my videos being reposted. I have no idea what's going on but I really appreciate the heads up.
Sometimes people just don't know any better. That kind of thing has happened before and sometimes can be addressed by sending a message to the person, assuming that what's going on here is an honest mistake rather than a crass attempt at competition. So far I can't even find the channel with the duplicated videos, but maybe I'll figure that out after I've had some coffee and shaken the cobwebs out of my head.
Thanks very much for the kind words, and for deferring your own postings (which I had no idea about, I really started the whole channel on a lark). You really didn't have to do that, but it was very nice of you. I don't own the series (any more than anyone else who has copies of the show does) so I don't have any real control over what people do with it, I just want the shows publicly available again, and this is a not entirely unexpected effect of that. .
That said, people downloading videos from a channel and reposting them on their own is dirty pool, and I'm going to do what I can to address this. Thanks again, sincerely.
Wow-- I found the channel. And I'll be pretty shocked if this is just an honest mistake. This person isn't just duplicating my videos, they've duplicated the channel name, video titles and the exact descriptions. That amounts to impersonating my account, a clear violation of RUclips's policies. Pretty outrageous.

romeman01 This person is very clearly aware of what he or she is doing-- comments are now disabled on the videos being added now so that no one can note that these videos were lifted from my channel. I've reported this using the tool RUclips provides, but given the total, and I mean total, lack of customer support, I'm not holding my breath for a response. This is, however, a *clear* violation of RUclips policy, as you pointed out. Unbelievable.
