- Scatterbug, Spewpa, and Vivillon are making their Pokémon GO debuts! Trainers can collect patterned Vivillon from all over the world by pinning Postcards received from Trainers, PokéStops, or Gyms in different regions. Scatterbug will evolve into a Vivillon with a pattern from one of the following habitats: Archipelago, Continental, Elegant, Garden, High Plains, Icy Snow, Jungle, Marine, Meadow, Modern, Monsoon, Ocean, Polar, River, Sandstorm, Savanna, Sun or Tundra.

@@JustFlow.Official I had 3 at 1 day. Even reached out on campfire. Waited a few days. Sent a gift. They popped it open without acknowledgement so I lost out on the exp. Campfire would have been easy to coordinate. Shame
Some helpful tips for the future:
- be sure to do these encounters when there's an event like community day or spotlight hour with x2 or x3 catch candy
- hold on to any spares that you don't plan on evolving, trade them with friends to get guaranteed candy or transfer during x2 transfer bonus
I wish they'd expand the postcard book. Mine is also filled. It's going to be a bit messy for me to keep adding and deleting to make room, plus I love my postcards and don't really like deleting them.
If you pin and immediately unpin the postcard from the gift, it still counts. That way you don't have to go back and delete
I did hear (possibly data miners on Twitter) that the postcard storage is going to he increased. Who knows if you'll have to buy the storage.

You can hold down one postcard till it highlights and then select any others you wasn’t to delete and delete several at a time.
This is a fun new mechanic - praise to Niantic for figuring out something fresh for the game. I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out once the initial excitement has worn off. Not pay-walled, plenty of scope for long-term play for folks who like the grind, easy to ignore for folks who aren't interested.
Interesting that it's just after they announced increased gift hold/send for the next couple of weeks. I wonder if that was deliberate timing or just one of those random things.

We can't increase postcard storage, sadly. They let us increase our items and Pokemon by 50. Just 50.

This is a fun addition. I love the regionals. My son is in the army, stationed in Hawaii. I've had him searching for comfrey but he's had no luck finding it yet. Now I'll be jumping on his postcards!
I appreciate cool gifts. And have enjoyed the postcard book since they released it. I love creative minds attaching a fitting sticker to a gift picture. And some of the stops have really good art, be it murals, architecture, or really creative photography! I appreciate those!
As soon as I heard about this, I wondered why they didn’t expand the postcard book. Having to go in and delete bunches to make room will eventually get annoying.

70° North in Norway gives Icy snow, 66° North gives polar, line goes some where inbetween there.
Anything related to distance friends is fun for me. Remote raids, eggs. This postcard thing has now got me too. I wish we could do trades with distance friends too.
I was in Helsinki last weekend and thankfully saved some gifts. Now that I pinned them they are Icy Snow region. So I think all Finland should count as that because Helsinki is in the very south.
Helsinki should be Polar, but I have pinned some gifts from near Helsinki and it is Icy Snow.

The real difficult part will be gaining the Scatterbug candy, as it takes 125 candy to evolve from base baby Scatterbug to final evolution (unsure if the diff regions will affect the final name). That means a lot of gifts from that particular region? Or, I guess that isn't clear yet. But either way, it is a LOT of candy to evolve.
The candy is shared between all patterns, it's just that each particular Scatterbug will only evolve into one specific pattern. It's still a lot, but it means you don't need to rely on gifts from a particular region.

You can mass delete postcards by just holding on them, same as pokemon. Much faster than deleting one by one. You can also encounter from the badge itself, don't need to wait for the popup

Sandstorm is only 1 location. That one will be the most challenging one to get.
If its split like on the DS, Norway is split into three different regions. Polar for the Northern parts, Tundra for the Western part and Continental for the Eastern part of the country. Sweden is split Nothern for Icy Snow, Middle for Polar and Southern for Continental. Finland should be all Icy Snow.
I think it's because people pin insects for collections which is a cool tie-in
this is an amazingly good way to implement a regional variant so diverse, you dont need to actually travel around the globe, just collaborate with people.
i wonder if they'll be wild spawns in the future...
also, worth mentioning theres 2 patterns not yet available, a greenish one (pretty sure its the one in Scarlet Violet) and a pokeball one, hopefully they dont paywall those...
The pokeball one and the one in scarlet and violet were only available from mystery gifts in the main series (until obviously they put it in scarlet and violet) but yes hopefully they will be available
There's also Vivillon Poke Ball & Fancy Patterns which were originally event only in Generation 6 & 7 (the games that it's available at or coded in) until Pokemon Scarlet & Violet where i think you can get them via evolving in those games. I still have those on my Pokemon Gen 6 games.
Maybe that's why there are only 18 variations shown on the map, but 20 different evolutions possible in the pokedex. Cool. :)
only Fancy can be evolved in the Scarlet/Violet games, the other 1 is still event-only

I'm so glad they didn't make this a regional form.
I already had friends in several of these, though ironically a lot of very distant people wound up in the same ones like Continental, Garden and River.
Others might be difficult. I've got 4 where people aren't reciprocating gifts at all but said they were from the region (Meadow x2, Ocean, Polar x2, Sun) and 6 I haven't found anyone for yet (Archipelago, Icy Snow, Jungle, Monsoon, Sandstorm, Savanna).
same, I was so worried that they would but I'm glad they did this instead because it makes it easier for everyone to get all 18 patterns
@@MattZRJSRoxy I wouldn't say easy, but at least possible, heh. I've been struggling with several with scouring Twitter and Discord. I'm down to just needing Savanna, Monsoon and Ocean. And another 1800 candy to evolve them all, heh.
@@Merennulli that's why I just search for GO Friend Codes and see what I find, if it's a country I don't have at least 2 for then I'm adding them. I'll be transferring some Vivillon over to HOME
Evolving them however is going to be an annoyance, that's why Elegant was first on my list
I saved 3 gifts from my bag and the encounter was a hundo Scatterbug! I was shook! The first person I thought of was you, and wonder if you are going for the hundo of each regional. The bottom iv is two stars like research, so it is a better chance. Hundo luck to you!
While saving everything I could, I used a mega and silver pineapples and got 200 candies, so I evolved my hundo already. But in the end I was still missing an encounter with Icy Snow, Ocean, and Sandstorm. I add a bunch of people from some possible regions of those. I hope I can catch one of each soon.
Tip: you can hold the postcard for a moment which enables selecting multiple to delete.
Question: Did you notice if the postcard saving stack for the medal or do you need to catch it before continuing? I was worried about this, so I only saved two or 3 each time and caught the Scatterbug before saving more.

They really REALLY need to increase the max postcard album size now though. it's not fair to people who have full albums to have to delete stuff to participate here.
Don't know if it has been brought up, but the location is where the postcard is from. So you could have someone in Australia who just holidayed in New Zealand and got a whole bunch of NZ Gifts. Might explain those weird ones eg Sweden not showing in the Sweden region. Keep it up everyone and Merry Christmas/Happy December to all!
I wish we could tag friends with different things like we can Pokemon. E.g. region (AUS / USA / NZ / UK etc. ) And now with vivillion region (garden, Tundra etc) as well as nickname - since the nickname isn't long enough for everything I want to put in there to make filtering my friends easier!
I've been nicknaming folks with *country so I can sort by nickname and because of the * the labeled ones show up first

My country is surrounded by 6 different patterns on the in-game map but I think I'm just getting Continental, which is unfortunate because no one is looking for those, lol.

I always nickname by country, so I have some idea, but sometimes people travel and have gifts from elsewhere.

Hate that entire Russia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and India get one entire Continental form. I get that it's more on Gamefreak than Niantic but its very frustrating still.
Yeah these regions are pulled exactly from the Pokémon X & Y region locations I believe. Not sure how accessible the games were for those markets in 2013? I think Sun & Moon (2016) was the first time the game was even available in Chinese (Trad & Simplified). And I think Nintendo/Pokémon still isn't commercially licensed in India? Would have been a good opportunity to give these locations a mix of patterns though.

Back in the day I would make a new profile on my 3ds and have it registered to the respective region. Start a new file on Y then catch a bunch of Scatterbug drop them off in home then level them in a different game was able to get all the forms in less than an hour

I live in the southern part of Sweden in the city of Gothenburg and we have the continental scatterbug while my friend in Umeå (northern part) has the polar scatterbug. Havnt quite figured out where the border is yet tho

also niantic: produces a bizarrely inaccurate and confusing world map for a feature that is supposed to encourage people to connect with players from specific areas all around the globe

There are better maps/lists on the Internet. I think Sweden has 3 forms, but being in the south I only get the (boring) continental one. And I have seen reports that states in the USA might even be split with 2 forms existing in the state of New York. But yeah, there will be lists with friends to add as this progresses. 2 500 candy to evolve them all - so a good hard grind. And then they will be shiny!

A side note: users of the addon app, PokeGenie have access to the remote raid feature. This allows you to make new friends from all over the world to send gifts to as well as raiding pesky region locked pokemon.
Hopefully we can get Scatterbug in 7k eggs sometime in the future. But only if you unlock the regions pattern. Or maybe it should be after you get all the patterns? Either way works.

I'd recommend double checking your postcard list for any duplicates. I found a few which is how I was able to do this "add and remove" method. I have flagged the lack of pin space with Niantic about a month ago and flagged again today. Fingers crossed. I feel you, mate.

Yep. This was the comment I was looking for so I didn't need to make it myself. It's a limit of 3 per day so you can go back and do more each day at least.

What’s the Beedrill strat you were talking about?
I believe she means if you Mega Evolve a Beedrill then it adds extra candy to the types of those species that you catch that matches Beedrill's type

You can pin up to 3 of your own postcards daily, that means you can get at least one every 5 days without counting the progress you could make with your friends, it's not that bad
