Arrived at Wembley on Mel's Barton Coach full of West Brigdfords lads aged 15 some were a little older with out Match Tickets, watched most on the game on a tv monitor outside Wembley. Got into Wembley for properly the last 10 minute's and was totally amazed how big the ground was, Forest fans were fighting in the car park after the game. My last visit to Wembley was against Huddersfield Town with a match ticket and the rest is history. COYR.
@@forgive7449 True that it was played alongside the other Saturday games, it wasn't shown on live TV and moved to a Sunday until 1984. But the final was seen as a big occasion all the same, unlike nowadays.
@@forgive7449 It obviously meant a lot to Emlyn Hughes and George Berry, if I am not mistaken that was officially the first interracial love scene recorded live on British TV! LOL
Both strips were fantastic and remained so until the late '80's when signs were there but not realised until the early mid 90's when all shirts became truly horrific - mainly due to the baggy 'fit'.
Nottingham push, but Wolves get the match. Great match and quality football. I remember my 15 years old with Francis and Robertson in Barcelona. Great players. Salutes from Spain.
I remember this Final as Wolves were outplayed but held on with a superb defensive rear guard action. That was a rare mistake by Shilton but fair play to Wolves. They were a good side back then and won despite not being great that day... also Mel Eves had a loan spell at my club Huddersfield and did very well. We were skint and alas couldnt afford to buy him and he moved on again.
Yes he did, He walked towards the Wolves fans with ear deafening jeers and then in return started to applaud us, The jeers turned to applause for him instantly. And he won us round. What a character he was.
Am so glad I grew up in this era I think football was better and more exciting. better characters in the game Emlyn Hughes was a great example of enthusiasm he was a winner and nobody deserved it more
A twist shown today on the Big Match revisited. A last minute goal by FA Cup winners West Ham in Quarter final the week before meant Andy Gray didn't miss the League Cup final due to suspension. Wolves game v Aston Villa where he served suspension would have been postponed otherwise and Gray would have missed the League Cup final.
As Ian sludge Lee's the comedian said after the game.Brian Clough said could we install bells in the ball as shilton and Needham can hear we're it is .😅😅😅. Great day right behind the goal as Andy gray tapped it in.

Remember this game. Forest were such a great side, couldn’t fathom how they could lose to Wolves. Wolves were an ordinary side at best. Forest were arguably the best side in Europe. Well they won the European Cup later this season.
Emlyn Hughes finally got to win the League Cup to complete his collection. RIP Emlyn Hughes. Oh and this was the last League Cup Final where the famous tankards were given to the players. Lovely to remember that team in their proper colours,,I don't know why they've drifted away from the traditional gold n black,,any colour but gold n black, not good,😊
this cup meant something back then not like today where clubs have disrespected our domestic cups managers put out a 2nd string team but if they get to the semi-final that 2nd string is dropped and the full strength side is picked clubs who do this should be fined by the FA and by the sponsors of the competition then may-be they may take them seriously.
We didn't score though, so at the end of it all Wolves deserved to win. Shame too because Forest would have got to keep that original trophy for good if they'd won it that day!
All credits due to wolves. A proper club. Although forest should have won by plenty I dont think us forest fans should complain. With francis out of the 1980 european cup final we lost most of our attacking power. Francis was definetly among the best strikers in the world before he got injured. After going up against Hamburg we had to defend just as wolves did in this final and without a fantastic shilton we would have lost. That was shiltons best game ever.
Tnx for the compliment ,wolves havjt won much in their history compared with the most successful clubs but their history and so many firsts in the English game is right up there.. Forest were a good side and should Indeed have won ,very lucky to have Brian clough he came along at the right time and made a very very average club !

George Berry's haircut......what a classic.....good old fashioned centre half
Made him a Figurine Panini superstar as well as a Wolves superstar !! Everyone wanted the cool Wolves dude.

George Berry and the whole of the wolves team that day where immense. Although forest were favourites, wolves managed to hold out and grind a result.

Clearly the quality is better these days but the relative lack of cynicism - and diving in particular - makes this so much more fun to watch.

I remember the goal at the time and Andy Gray's celebration. (Was it me or is Emlym Hughes not having a great game? He seemed a bit out of form).
+1.👍
I think Hughes retired in the end of this season....remember he started his career at Blackpool in the early 60s
Liverpool let him go at the end of the previous season for a reason.

How did we not win that???!!!
Should have won 5-1, but ended up losing! I always refer to this game when people say the best team always wins, because quite obviously they don't!
Because we kept a clean sheet.

yes he was operated at times! should never have been at 86 and 90 world cups! he developed lead in his feet!
