  • We fly the first mission of Leutnant Shultz with Ju 87 Stuka Ace, the World War 2 wargame (historical game board game) from Lock 'N Load Publishing, designed by Gottardo Zancani. In this game you play as a German Stuka pilot in World War 2, and can fly in an entire campaign for the length of World War 2.

    Known Errors
    1 - On the "TO HIT" Sequence, I pulled a new card to check for a hit on the railroad, but I should have used the same number from the Bomb Release section. The bomb release result was an 8, should have been a 9, so there would have been no difference in the result: railroad destroyed.

    After Action Report:
    Written by Hauptman Krieger
    Target for today was mid-distance railroad, goals being to interdict local redeployment by Polish forces to prevent a breakthrough. Gruppe performance overall was lackluster, dense clouds forced our planes to fly low to avoid missing target. This led most pilots to glide more than dive, leading most bombs to miss their mark. However, one pilot, Leutnant Schultz of Staffel 2 Kette 3 conducted himself with vigor, holding himself until near altitude before releasing, thus achieving success with his payload. His Kette Leader reported his success to me, I have since used his example to inspire the rest of the Gruppe to be more daring. If he continues to acquit himself admirably, I recommend he be given his own Kette so that they may learn from his example.

      Thanks! I generally only will undo something if it's a rules mistake that's easily fixable. Part of that is related to how much more time it would take if I re-recorded every mistake in judgement or rules. :) The other part is that I'm not super concerned about playing well/winning so much as learning as I play, if that makes sense. I feel like mistakes like that are learnable moments, for both myself and people watching, perhaps. :)

    If it's not too late to get back to the devs, I noticed that they misspelled "PULL-UP" on the Bomb Attack Sequence at 17:21. Also, they should be more consistent with their terminology. On that Bomb Attack card, not all of the sequences specify the die roll type (AA Fire and AA Damage do but Dive doesn't) and that card uses "D6" whereas the weather cards use "1D6". Not a big deal but makes the game seem a bit less polished.

    Please continue the campaign of Schultz, I definitely want to see more. I vote you call your plane Helga, there's a classic comedy called Allo Allo in the UK and the main German female character shares that name and I think it suits a Stuka.

He was most unhappy contrary to myself to find out I gained Ju87's for a battle over 9th January Square. I promptly used them to flatten the two buildings they were using as defensive bases one of which was Pavlov's House. The way the campaign works those two buildings will remain rubble for the remainder of the campaign. Its a great game and campaign but alas not Solo and unlikely to be seen on your channel. • @SoloBattles
    @SoloBattles Год назад +2

    Great video! Really shows how fun and exciting the game can be. I tend not to enjoy Solitaire games because the "challenge" is often simply tough die rolls. Luck not skill. A great way to mitigate this is to make most successes automatic IF you plan and play smart. This makes those occasional die rolls that could fail, very tense and exciting.
    This game does that!
    When I play Nemo's War, I call all die rolls (2d6) a 7, which makes most rolls automatic IF you get your mods right or select safer options. If a seven isn't good enough, then you have to roll. That gets very tense! So, you can always call an automatic seven, unless you need more, then you have to roll.
    Sure, bad luck happens, but this is a game, and to have all your time invested just to lose on a routine check is kind of anti-climactic. I got Real Life for that! 🤪

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Год назад +2

      Oh, that's an interesting mechanic in Nemo. I have to get that game to the table soon. :) But yes, that's one thing that I think is clear from this game, that you want to stack the odds in your favor to make things like the pull up automatic. You won't last long if every pull up is a 1/6 chance of crashing. :)

    • @SoloBattles
      @SoloBattles Год назад +1

      @@ZillaBlitz My point exactly! If you're making numerous rolls per turn, any chance of failure is too much when failure any failure is catastrophic.

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Год назад +1

      Well, to be fair, most of the attack rolls impact your chances of hitting the target, but you're balancing that with that final pull up. The pull up is the one catastrophic part. Although, the AA fire can create issues as well, especially if it hits your plane. :)

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Год назад +1

      Yes, all things considered I think we'll take this for a first mission. 6 VP and a destroyed railroad is a great start. And yep, I think he'll learn from his mistakes. The diving runs are actually a fun little mini-puzzle, where you're trying to think about how to use the cards you have to get the best odds for success. I imagine they'll get trickier as the campaign progresses. And Heidi is a great name! We do have a Hilda too.

      Thanks, Devin, glad you liked it! This game is so much fun. :) And yes, we were so lucky on that initial AP hand. It made for plenty of good options in the attack run, but I was a touch nervous about that pull up there. A 1/6 chance of a crash doesn't seem like a viable long-life strategy in this game. :) Anyway, Mission 2 awaits! :)

      @@ZillaBlitz well.. remember that if you fail the Pull-up roll it is then a roll on the Crash table which is a D12...I just happened to pull a 1 on that which is crash and instant death-all the other results are further checks to see what happens-emergency landing..a crash check to see if you die...make it back to base ok...so failing that Pull-up roll doesn't mean you are going to instantly die...but it will make your life interesting =)

Not sure if there is something in the rules or text on the card that we don't know about to allow those bombs. Either way I enjoyed the play through and have had this game on pre-order for a bit. Hopefully they get it to the point they are happy with and release soon. After watching the video again I think I understand what is happening with the bomb load. The * symbol is on the 500kg bomb, so it can't be wing mounted. Makes perfect sense to me, could you imagine how that would turn out?

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Год назад +1

    Sturzkampfgeschwader ("dive bombing squadron") has GOT to be on a master-class pronunciation test, somewhere - lol.
    The first syllable is pronounced "sHtu-ehts" (remember to pronounce leading S's as if they were "sh" if they proceed a hard consonant like "t", and go "soft on your German "r's").
    The "a" in kampf is soft, "almost" like the vowel sound of the English word "straw".
    Both the "soft r" and the "soft a" apply in geschwader, as well.
    And remember to pronounce the "w" in geschwader as if it were your English "v".
    So phonetically, " sHtu-EHts kAWmpf ge schVawd EH", and the emphasis is on the next-to-last syllable. See? Super easy. (LOL)

      I'm not sure on the UK, but I'd think that Lock 'N Load's games are available there somewhere, right? The next episode doesn't really explain the cards to great detail either, sorry about that. I think I assumed that it was easier to pick up than it likely is. Here's a quick tutorial:
      There are a number of different type of events in the game. Many of them are called CHECK events. When you come to a CHECK event, you have the option doing one or both of the following:
      - You can play a card from your hand of Action cards. When you do this, you can use either the AP value in the top right of the card as a +Die Roll Modifier (DRM) OR you can use the special action near the bottom of the card (not the text in yellow, the text above that).
      - You can also use a stamina to draw an Action Card from the top of the Action deck and add that AP value as a DRM.
      That help some?

    Nice looking game Zilla, but can I ask why use cards for the D6 rolls etc? Is the spread of numbers in the deck you use not the same as that of a D6 ? Just seems a bit fiddly for no good reason otherwise.

    • @SoloBattles
      @SoloBattles Год назад +4

      It seems the cards fill multiple functions, one of which is to generate random numbers. This allows the deck to be cycled through and play differently each time. The same way as AH's Up Front game.
      I don't have the game, Zilla can confirm this for me.

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Год назад +2

      Yes, the Flight Deck cards are used for the Approach and Return to Base segments, so you're using them for more than just die rolls. I'd expect that since there are 37 cards in the deck and one of them is a reshuffle card, that the distribution is equal. I'm not sure of the design decision, maybe to cut down on the need to roll?
      I suppose you could use a real die if you want. Not sure if there would be any other implications to gameplay... Well, I guess that you'd be less likely to get a reshuffle card and therefore once you pulled a particular event card it would be less likely to show up in the same mission.

    • @SoloBattles
      @SoloBattles Год назад +1

      @@ZillaBlitz The other advantage to cards over dice is that you tend to get a wider spread. While you can't keep rolling sixes, you also can't keep rolling ones. At least in general.

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Год назад +2

      To be fair, I'm not sure I have a preference one way or the other. I'm fine with dice and fine with cards. I think. I've not really thought about it that much. I do think there needs to be thought given to recycling the deck in a way that doesn't make the deck predictable. I love By Stealth and Sea, but the recycling card doubles as a 12, the worst roll. So when you get late in the deck and that card hasn't come up, you can pretty much know that you're going to get wasted by that card at any moment. It's a small thing, but nice to avoid via design.
      I do like cards for recording video, though, because with dice I like to record the dice tower camera. It's faster for me to just slide a card in front of the camera, at least on the editing end of things.

    I have a question Zilla. What are Stuart tanks doing in Poland in 1939? How can you put bombs on the wings when it says no bombs on the wings? Game seems interesting but a lot of card drawing. I think id like this a bit better if it was a dice mechanic and you are rolling on charts.

    • @ZillaBlitz
      @ZillaBlitz  Год назад +2

      The "Railroad" target is used for the whole game, so the card could come up in Russia, Crete, North Africa, etc., anywhere there is a railroad target. So I think the expectation is that it represents any old railroad, and the image doesn't matter except for flavor.
      The "*no bombs on the wings" has an asterisk before it, which means that it only applies if you selected the 500kg bomb for under the fuselage. It's easy to get when you play, but on the video it might look odd because the bomb counter covers up the "500kg*". :)
