The Jerk has been my all time favorite movie since it first appeared in theaters! I still make use of its many quotes in everyday conversation. In college classes (and other group settings), whenever we were asked to INTRODUCE ourselves, I often started with, "I was born a poor black child." It was a great ice-breaker and consistently got laughs. Sadly, nowadays, some folks take offense to that line.

“Social responsibility” has no place in comedy. Mel Brooks said he wouldn’t be able to make Blazing Saddles in today’s political environment. That’s tragic. I’ll bet that cut scene with Bill Murray was hysterical.

Steve Martin wasn't making fun of African Americans when he declared convincingly he "was born a poor black child" and he wasn't making fun of his, Bill Murray's and Bernadette Peters' many gay friends and associates. I love your videos and u say great insight about different scenes or actors. Honestly I hope one day they will show a special edition on dvd or 4k or Bluray and show those special cut of the scenes and maybe make the movie more understandable since now the scenes are now either used as a deleted scene or put into the movie where it makes more sense. It’s like the movie Love at First Bite with George Hamilton which I hope u show a special about that movie like u did The Jerk. Anyway there was scenes cut out of that comedy and showed in the tv version cuz I seen it and it was funny but never showed it on dvd or regular movie on Netflix or Prime. Anyway I hope u do a special about Love At First Bite cuz it is a good movie and one of my favorites and again love your videos and please keep showing and I will still be watching.

Love Steve Martin, and love The Jerk. Totally disagree with your (I assume un-researched point) that the film received "mostly positive reviews" upon release. Quite the opposite! Movie critics hated this movie, calling it simple, dumb, politically incorrect and crass. But people went to see The Jerk anyway, and the rest is history. Please do some actually research next time. Lazy writing.

@@KidFresh71 in fact, if you read the comments a full 1/3 or so say they do not like The Jerk.
It was NOT received well. But, audiences loved it. Plus… MARTIN WROTE IT! Carl Reiner agreed to do it, and Martin left stand-up! His autobiography is harsh, he suffered. He struggled. Then, he “made it” and had 50,000 in an audience. But, once at the top? He hated it. Totally hated it. Making films saved him. Read that autobiography- it’s revealing,
Martin wanted to entertain audiences. That was his soul. An entertaining man who wanted to make people laugh. Pennies from Heaven demonstrated his range, imo.

@@bobbymoore5249 try watching Murray in The Razors Edge. Murray got the studio to do that film in exchange for him agreeing to Stripes, or Ghostbusters? It was a dramatic role and he did very well. Also, the film where he tries to go back to women he’s wronged and he faces all the women he’s hurt, Broken Flowers. Like many type-cast celebs, Murray isn’t free to just make what he wants, control editing, etc.
