The Lost Dungeon of Ocarina of Time (Zelda 64)

- Finally after almost 22 years, we've gained access to one of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's scrapped dungeons - back in its early days as Zelda 64. This strange castle we saw in the beta dungeon photos and old video clips has been brought back to life after being reassembled from pieces in a recent leak. A huge thanks to Z64.me and Zel for their help putting this together and for their help with this video as well!

I didn't cover this in the video so I wanted to add it here: It looks like at first the game stemmed out of Hyrule Castle similar to how Mario 64 did with a castle hub world. Miyamoto made this comment in an early interview: "At the beginning, there was only Hyrule Castle. You couldn’t move around much, and I was thinking about making a game without a lot of space. Mario was mostly created in that image." - November 16th, 1998. So perhaps this was Hyrule Castle, but it's impossible to tell if he was referring to this time period in development or the mockups that came way before this dungeon.
Love ur vids
All this stuff is so interesting keep up the amazing work ❤️
You should make DOOM videos
I just came here to say that. This seems very much like it was intended to be the hub world.
Well Ocarina of Time was made using an advanced Super Mario 64 engine.
Seeing 2 decades old beta footages and images come to life like this is absolutely magical. And somewhat eerie too. Lost media always gives me a strange feeling in my stomach.
Actually the 90s are now technically three decades ago...

Maybe a “Light” Temple, to earn the Light Medallion.
Love this theory! After all, you were sort of just "gifted" that medallion for pulling the sword. Very compelling case.
So Raru would be trapped and instead of greeting you after you pull out the sword someone else would?
@@GODOFAWSOMENESS1Candice
@@GODOFAWSOMENESS1maybe not, it could have been the first adult like dungeon, and considering the sages room is canonically in the temple of light, the goal might have been to access said room

ong
I wish this was in this game!
looks pretty badass but maybe the animation was too long or they couldn't get it working how they wanted.
Probably thought it was excessive. That’s a lot of effort for a drop of blood 😂
@@imchase7796 but looks cool!
OoT had a lot of cut content, like the Wind Temple, and this dungeon could have been the Temple of Light. The random room with the circular spotlight, the yellow/golden walls, and open peak of the castle kinda lean toward a light themed dungeon. The top of the castle's floor even reminded me of the pool where all the sages meet when you rescue them. It's been a long time, but I thought a light temple was going to be in the game but was eventually scrapped, due to most likely time constraints. Some of its assets were moved to the Spirit Temple, where a lot of the dungeon puzzles deal with reflecting light, and you get the mirror shield.
Could also be storage space constraints.
Remember the 64DD was supposed to launch worldwide in 1997, and had 64 megabyte disks. (with anything up to 32 megabytes of writeable content, if needed, which could also have implications for certain ideas)
Zelda ultimately released on a 32 megabyte cartridge, and we also know, from the fact that it was released later on on gamecube (and early rumours), that Ocarina of Time was going to have a 2nd quest, in a style similar to the very first zelda game, but in the end it didn't.
Considering it having only half the storage that it was intended to, I'd bet on a fair bit of cut content just to fit into the cartridge limitations.
The lack of a temple of light does stand out given the pattern.
But looking at the UI that shows your progress, I always used to be convinced that there'd be something to do with that triforce insignia - thus more stuff to do with collecting the triforce.
Yet that clearly isn't the case.
So, based on what we can say with reasonable confidence plus my own nagging feeling that I just could never shake...
- We can assume there was a light temple at some point.
- We can assume a 2nd/master quest existed (Whether the later gamecube bonus IS this exact thing or not is hard to say. Seems probable, but it's not definitive)
- I get personally get the feeling there was supposed to be triforce related endgame content. Whether this is a full 3 dungeons, a single dungeon, or some weird diversion the way wind waker did it, I don't know. But the status UI very much makes me feel there should've been... Something...
The loss of half of the possible storage the game was originally intended for certainly is far from trivial, and could explain a fair bit of lost content...
The Wind temple is the forest temple. It went through a name change.
Make a youtube channel stop tryina make ur own episode on someone elses lmao

so perhaps you were suppose to go into the temple to attempt to get an item to help you or perhaps free the temple from gannons control before you face him outside the sacred realm at the hyrule castle?
I've been loving all the rumor nostalgia, creepypasta, leaks, and modding that's been creeping back up and I hope they'll continue to make childhood dreams come true.
I have a hunch that this may have been an “early” ganon castle experience that could have been used right after link traveled to the future. There may have been some sort of plot where link saw what happened to the Hyrule Castle and rushed to see Zelda’s fate. But obviously it was scrapped for wanting access to the castle to be later on. Or it could have just been an early concept of Ganondorfs castle/just another portion of the dungeon that was never used. Otherwise, super cool to see things like this from games we otherwise feel like we know everything about
I think this “dungeon” is probably actually a prototype of the hub world that the developers were planning on using before they realized they would be able to make the game open world on base N64 hardware after all.
I agree and I believe that as well
No This is just a test Dungeon, that change came in later judging by that Hyrule Castle early model and early map structure that were also found in the Giga leak.

Thought you were going to say Super Mario 64.
That intro hit me in the nostalgia hard! OoT was my first Zelda game and first N64 game I bought myself, as opposed to the ones which came with the console or received as gifts. It will always hold a special place ib my heart and I would spend ages looking at a website called the Odyssey of Hyrule in those early internet days reading about Easter eggs and rumours and the pre-release stuff. Anyone else here remember that site?
It's not necessarily the case that this dungeon was definitely story related. Nintendo makes LOTS of test maps and this could very much have been just to test stalfos encounters or something.
Test maps are usually titled as such, those maps are called "First Dungeon". Granted, you could say it's simply called that because it's the first dungeon they created, but there's too many details compared to test maps found in the Debug ROM or in Wind Waker, which usually use crude textures, random geometry and were never shown in trailers. Plus, most maps used for enemies are a single room, testing them in a big map like that would be a huge waste of time.
@@MrCed122 probably they didn't have the story pieced together when they created this dungeon. I think the fact that the dungeon has that many details is because they wanted to use it for trailers and showcase and not just for testing.

This dungeon really reminds me of the Tower of the Gods from Wind Waker.
Same! And climbing up stairs being able to see the sky also reminds me of the top bit of the Tower of Spirits in Spirit Tracks
I see it clear, the stairway reaching up to the sky.
Yeah totally
Glad I'm not the only one with that thought
That isn't a crazy idea.
Nintendo has a habit of reusing old ideas in new projects. It's a consequence of keeping the same people at a job for decades.

Ok don't tell me this game has an iceberg now?
This game does have that mysterious vibe to it like Mario 64.
There is some that have been made and Mike Kroz is doing a video on a particular one like he did for Mario.
Edit: Mish Koz sorry
This game is truly a Master piece, I have no other words.. 😅
Wilfred Cthulu I searched up Mike Kroz on youtube because I’m interested on what the Mario video you’re talking about is, could you tell me how to actually search him up on YT??
@@Star_Mans_Legacy It's MISH KOZ sorry for getting the name wrong. Just look up the Mario 64 Iceberg on here and he should come up.
@Katz Meowski Mmm.
Feels to me like its purpose was as a vertical slice that might have been shown behind closed doors to showcase a 3D Zelda, hence the old screenshots. It's the polygonal medieval atmosphere as well as a focus on Link duelling against knight enemies. Looks more like a showcase than a place that was meant to be explored.
Yeah I'm almost sure it was just a prototyping test to set the mood and to serve as an slice for demoing and finding a direction.
It really feels and looks like it
From looking at it, this looks like what they might have had in mind for the light temple since the design has a big emphasis on light and sight along with bright colors refering to the sun, which is what the light medallion's emblem somewhat resembles...
rumors state that there WAS going to be a dungeon for the light medallion, so it makes sense.
Lol that's a stretch.
It was just an unthemed prototype
The use of light and sun themes seem to be more a motif for the gerudo, which could be either spirit temple or Ganon's castle.
Light Medallion was the only one lacking a dungeon, so it might've been for that. Maybe they started doing the dungeon but decided to abandon it for some reason. OR it could have been just a test map.
Wasn't the original over world for OoT to be..like mario 64? the dungeons were interconnected via magic which this beta castle makes sense if they wanted to go for that concept, still would love to see a game like that.
That’s true, and I believe there is a strong chance this castle is from a build where that concept of a hub castle was still in place. Hence the very cartoonish art style and the Mario 64 textures.
Nintendo apparently ditched the hub world concept when they realized how powerful the N64 was and could handle more.
Joey Bobby woooowwwww you just threw me the fuck back with that image. I remember it so clearly haha thanks 😊

I like that this video focused more on information that speculation, but I still liked that some speculation was there. This has got to be one of my favorite videos of yours.
It does seem like they reused the rooms in this dungeon for Ganon's Tower.
Isn't it crazy how much work and how much love they put into all those details? Because the game could've looked like this, and even then it stood out in that time. But they literally made everything perfect and created a timeless masterpiece.
oot and mario 64's betas always fascinated me that they both had that weird mysterious vibe to them. i guess makes sense given their shared development cycle. They both have dedicated fans who bring back old concepts which is really cool! seeing the old photos i legit thought this was ganondorf's castle, although it was probably just a test room that they reused some layouts for the final game. great video!
Very cool video, particularly from a history/preservation perspective. And now I'm off to check out more and your collaborator's channels.

its an old rumor that there was supposed to be a light temple because you do recieve the medallion of light after becoming ADULT LINK. What a very interesting video. Ocarina of Time is my favorite Zelda game ever made, and it's interesting to see what mysteries were hidden in the files before the final completion and official release. This is just about as mysterious as the Unicorn Fountain, hidden underneath Zora's Domain. So, I wonder if there will be more mysteries behind this game. Thank you for uploading this.
I dunno if there's enough star fox 64 data to do a video on that but the og high quality audio files SOUND SO GOOD IT MAKES ME SO HAPPY TO LISTEN TO THEM!!!
This was incredible thank you for making this video. I'm wondering if you could do other videos with other games such as Majora's mask on Twilight princess
I share the same love to this game so big thanks for this awesome work and research
I love your videos. And you really love an overuse of adjectives 😂
It feels like they took this temple apart and placed bits of it in different games, the last area reminds me of the ice area in twilight Princess, and some other rooms are giving me vibes of other games. Interesting! Also I enjoyed watching this, I have a currently have a migraine so watching/listening to this was really nice
a few years ago I downloaded the OoT map for Minecraft. Upon playing, I realized what an opportunity it was to see the Hyrule of my youth expanded in such detail. I love seeing lost dungeons like this. OoT was the best Zelda of all time, IMO. Seeing it's greatness expanded to give more adventure gave me such happiness. Thank you for this video. Although it's not an "official temple," it still gives the imagination wonder into the world we all know and love.

None of the videos before or after this are about personalization
That balcony raining is also another Super Mario 64 texture, I think. I remember railings similar to them in Big Boo's Haunt.
Maybe the top of the tower brings Link to The Sky Temple? Also, the way the circular red carpet is lit, maybe it had something to do with The Mirror Shield or Light Temple? It's awesome to see some of these scraps put together 22 years later.
The way he talked about ocarina of time in the beginning is exactly how I talk about twilight princess my first zelda game on my Wii u I love that game man
Oh and wind waker hd love that one to
This makes me want to go back and play OOT, even on 3DS. Haven't in years. Thanks for that.
It also seems like this may have been intended as a gauntlet setup, fighting through different enemies that may have gotten more and more powerful along the way for some reward. Not sure what, but it could be something like having 3 gauntlet locations that unlocked as you finished areas...possibly each giving a triforce piece as a "trophy" for each. There were the early screenshots with them, and this might be the second of them. For when they would be, perhaps one would open up right before you open the Temple of Time, a second when you gain time travel, and the last when you unseal the inside of the castle at the end. Perhaps adding some of the item stockpile upgrades for things there as well.
I love how you say things i've never heard anyone but me say about how these games felt and what they meant
Fantastic... Years pass and we still get information about Zelda 64, it is almost magical.
That dungeon shows only 2 options to me:
1) An early prototype of Ganon's Tower with all those rounded stairs and getting to the top to see there is no roof-Like the pre-final battle before the building collapses and Link and Zelda need to go down. Also, there are many Stalfos, rounded rooms and torches on the edges.
2) A simple, organized test sandbox dungeon/tower/playground in order to see possible errors and glitches and, again, looking a lot like Ganon's Tower.
Thanks, those images were no less than great.
There ARE interviews mentioning how Ganons Castle was the first proper temple to be developed. These files you found inside and recreated give merit to that. The fact you have to do tons of different things (and had to use the light arrow) there is simply because it worked as a debug space. This is nice though. Good work
i actually found this VERY familiar, i believe a heavily modified version of this dungeon made it into a different zelda game as the Tower of the Gods in Wind Waker.
I love things like this because it makes you wonder what the initial plans were and if the alternative was any better. This potentially being Hyrule Castle and the game involving time travel, it could be that you had to go back in time and work your way through it to get the light arrows. Alternatively, it could just have been the developers learning to work with the game engine.
This is like modern day painting restoration. Amazing.
Never in my life have I gotten motion sickness (maybe from the roller coaster in Sunshine but that was a one off) and here I am feeling dizzy at what is basically a Zelda romhack
Nice work guys.
Those torches kind of look like mock-ups of the statues you had to smash with the Megaton Hammer in the Spirit Temple.
I didn’t know I needed this 🥺
This may have been a savage \ master sword trial dungeon. With the rooms you see most likely being looped to fight different enemies leading to a unique boss at the top. I manly think this because it seems to straight forward to be a regular dungeon. Or maybe that was why it was scraped. Anyway still really cool to see this.
It's funny reading comments implying that OoT isn't a super mysterious game like they haven't even heard of things like the hidden Triforce or the Zelda 64 beta. Maybe ten years ago or so everybody in the Nintendo community knew and wondered about OoT's secrets and mysteries. I didn't think newer fans wouldn't know about that stuff.
Not to mention that back then these mysteries were based on much more limited information and actually seemed realistic, unlike the (sorry) obviously made-up Mario 64 creepypastas that are being treated as real now.
Miyamoto helped answer a lot of your questions back in a "Iwata Asks" in 2011. These are the assets from the original construction of the game when they were testing out the system capabilities. Originally, he thought he would have to have the entire game inside Ganon's castle, with warp points to different adventures in different rooms (the blank wall and the glowing carpet would have been those points). Very similar to Mario 64.
