The guard “tried” to stop Ganondorf’s men from chasing Zelda and Impa. When you see Zelda and Impa fleeing, only Ganondorf is in pursuit. That’s the only guard in the history of Hyrule that did his job AND did it successfully.
20 years later, having played and beaten this game numerous times and watching tons of speedruns, 100% playthroughs, and ROM hacks... and I've never known about this guard. What a mindfuck.
It stops being a "mindfuck" if you approach it as this video does, as evidence of the history of a game's development. Probably the best part of this video is how the narrator talks about what he would have believed as a child, which just happens to be in the mode of 99% of "theory" videos on RUclips
@@MegaZeta the lore/backstory behind the guard isn't what's fucking with me, but I do find it very interesting. what's got me fucked up is that I've just never known about this part of the game at all. I thought I knew everything there was to know about OOT, but I've never discovered this guard myself or even heard anyone else talk about it before. it's just so cool that there was still something left for me to learn about the game.
It can easily be explained by him being an actual, loyal guard, and the other ones are "Ganondorf's men". That also explains why he is alone in an alley.
@@MG92-91 : Good question, but they are mere guards, "red shirts", nameless goons,... as in not powerful or capable enough to stop Impa. Or... he may have grown a momentary conscience or was just too afraid to oppose Impa.
I think someone finally figured it out the only way it makes sense that he would sneak and hide is if the other guards were corrupt and why they are patrolling in mass numbers expecting link
@@MG92-91 we don’t know if the guard at the gate is the same guard that let Zelda out. They all look the same. Also Impa could have overpowered the guard and lowered the gate
He's probably there to guide people who can't seem to figure out the next step. Like he's on the opposite side of the Temple of Time. It's the game telling you, "Wrong way, doofus".
Actually, younger me also thought it was a cool way to point you in the right direction, rather than someone you can talk to repeatedly and not remember. Then again, I like torturing the undead and anything in my way in video games that have no ramifications for doing so, so I'm probably not the best example.
That’s the same thought I got, it could’ve been an inside job, but then I though wait what MEN would he have aren’t the rest of the gerudo female since only on male was born every 100 years?.
Most of the other guards were being controlled by Ganondorf. That's how he managed the attack without raising suspension from the towns people. The dieing guard was hiding from all the others, hoping to see you and pass on the message.
See I actually just commented saying ir had to of been some sort of time sit still spell or mind control but that makes sense. A guard realizing his fellow comrades have been taken over
Mmm the guard did say that he tried to stop ganondorf's men. But ganondorf is the only Male in gerudo valley. So ganondorf turned the kings men against him.
Basically the other soldiers joined Ganon and this soldier tried to go to the castle to stop him, but was injured and thrown into the back alley while no one was looking.
This is a much better theory in my opinion. I love the idea of a lone guard trying desperately to continue holding out until the boy from the forest arrived.
He's placed there to direct players in case they wanted to go to the back alley, he lets them not get distracted and makes them head to the temple... It's a good way to make sure the emotional momentum from the earlier scene is carried through to the player entering the temple
Thats exactly it, and this theory has been tested and proven to be true because as I was doing things other than the main quest. NPC's like the fkin owl tells me to go back to hyrule castle to finish the main quest so as to not get side tracked. This game was meant for kids and this was in a way to assist kids in completing the game.
Eh, I headcanon it as this: Ganondorf's men had infiltrated the Hyrulean guards. This guy was basically one of the few who were still loyal to the Hyrulean royal family. When Ganondorf staged his coup, this guy found himself outnumbered by traitors. He managed to stall them so that Impa could escape with young Zelda, maybe by fighting to open the castle gate so they could rush though and closed it behind them to keep the traitors inside. But Ganondorf and his horse got through before the gate could close. The guard was wounded. Maybe by an arrow. Maybe he was run over by Ganondorf's horse as he sped through the gate. (Having died this way in BotW, I can totally see someone being mortally wounded this way...) As he made his way to the town, he realised that if the other guards were traitors, who else could be? He realised that couldn't trust anybody. That anyone could be yet another of Ganondorf's people. So, he slipped into the alleyway to rest and figure out what to do. No-one in Castle Town saw him, as they were still reeling from the horses running through so quickly. But he quickly realises that his wounds are more serious than he thought, and he's going to die in that alleyway alone. However, Link finds him, and he quickly tells him what had happened, forgetting in his rush to mention not to trust anyone. As he slips away, he's merely grateful that at least someone was there for him at the end.
That's perfect. Same way I see it. The townspeople are oblivious because they only see Impa with Zelda fleeing from Ganondorf. They don't know anything about what happened in the castle or why Impa would take Zelda and run. The guard was wounded defending Zelda and she mentioned the boy from the forest, he hides in the alley because he wants to pass on his message to the boy without Ganondorf's minions finding him.
While that would have been cool, I think it wasn't added because it would have locked off some pieces of hearts with the shops in town and the entire happy sales man mask quest thing.
@@j.e.g.9513 Yeah probably, but even then I could imagine them keeping the damages strictly outside and make the NPCs a little sadder. But to be honest I do not know how difficult all the programming would be, but I can imagine it would be taxing so I am not blaming em for cutting it. Just would have been cool is all.
That guys the bravest person there, he literally fought off a bunch of Ganondorf’s men and still talks to Link like he’s had a scratch. On the verge of death and saying “Tis but a scratch”. He knows he’s gonna die and he’s dying a hero, literally he should be at least getting a special location or a gravesite for him somewhere. He’s a goddamn unit of a man
@@browserii2048 Well Ganondorf was sealed away after Link beat the shit out of him in OOT, but at the end of Twilight Princess Link kills Ganondorf and the Triforce of Power disappears. The Triforce of Power is somewhere hidden in Hyrule Castle still waiting for someone to come across it and claim it.
10:10 “this town is full of nothing but Ganondorf’s underlings!” Ganons evil must’ve corrupted the soldiers of hyrule. The dying soldier must’ve not been affected somehow.
Yep, this makes sense. This would also be the reason why he's hiding. Imagine he was fatally wounded while trying to protect the princess, but he couldn't go to any other guards for help in case they were traitors, so he chose to die alone in the alleyway.
He had direct knowledge of something Zelda wanted. That means he was probably one of Zelda's personal guards. He would have been away from Ganondorf's influence and with the princess, who also has divine powers that could have easily been stopping dark magic from getting near without her even knowing. I think he was protected from Ganondorf's influence by Zelda.
I had the same teary this guard duty is not over he still helps link and now his soul is in the solider armor in botw also he must be that guard that drops bombs if you hit the windows of hyrule Castle
Yeah and read what Shiro says. Seems like something an unnoticed, unseen dying guard would say and lament about don't you think? And the fact he wants medicine to feel better, to be noticed and seen - since link needs the lens of truth to even interact with him at all; tatl even seems unaware of his presence - I think it's telling a desire on link's side of things too. If he gives shiro red or blue potion, the guard will be brought back to life. He will no longer need the lens of truth to see him. Link regrets watching him die in front of him without trying to save him. In fact if you play oot, the npcs found in majora's mask are still unhappy in some way despite link saving hyrule. Majora's Mask is link trying to rectify his failures...but inevitable losses persist. The three races that made him into who he is as a child all lost someone - the deku butler and his son, were a role reversal of him and the great deku tree. The goron and zora hero. The deku child was at the wrong place and time; majora used the child's soul to transform link.
I love Ocarina of Time and I had no idea about this dying guard. It's like he exists like a final precursor to Link becoming an adult. Link's not a child anymore, and it's up to him to save the world.
That's an interesting point, just as Link is taking his first step towards a hasty adulthood, there's that chance he encounters this guard, along with the (likely) young player experiencing this with Link; The guard is the first to truly and unequivocally die, and he dies in front of him. Like a child seeing a dead body for the first time, there's that realization; There's no more room for kid stuff, people's lives hang in the balance and the responsibility falls to Link (The Player), and the guard doesn't go easily; He sputters and stutters in severe pain, and his life ends with one last violent convulsion. It's like an "End of Childhood" Easter Egg. Every child experiences that rite of passage at some point, of learning about death and dying, and in the Kokiri Forest, that concept must have been entirely alien to Link, surrounded as he was by the ageless wood and its spiritual denizens.. It really is just a somewhat subtle Coming of Age story that the player is guided through, but it must have been seen as unnecessary, as that subject is touched on when the Deku Tree petrifies - and touched on again with life and death coming full circle with the appearance of the Deku Sprout later. A tree 'fading' however is the gentle version, it is not in the same way a human being (Hylian) dies.
I really like this thoery. Link is shown at the beginning as a child with no concept of responsibility, he sleeps in late, and he is the only Kokiri child (even though he isn't actually one) to have not found a fairy. He goes to get the spiritualhowe stones almost like a kid on some heroic mission, and might not actually comprehend the seriousness of the situation. This 'wake up call' as it were, might have made him realise the situation fully, and thus shocked him into maturity. Adulthood and maturity don't always coinside; just because someone ages, doesn't mean their mentality changes, and as Link was merely stuck in time for several years, his mentality wouldn't have been affected all that much without the aid of this dying guard.
@Bad Cattitude The same thing happened to me 😂. After I got the stones I was like alright mission accomplished and then Ganondorf shows up and I'm like fffuuuuuu
He must be connected to Shiro the invisible guard from Majora’s Mask! “I'm shocked. You're the first person who's ever spoken to me. I've been here for many years, waving my arms around and asking for help, but everyone ignores me and passes me by. It's 'cause I'm about as impressive as a stone, right? ...I'm used to it, though.” - Shiro IMO Shiro was based on this guard that most never even got to meet before he died.
The_Chase_of_Spades plus that fits in to the Majorca’s mask theory that it’s link fighting to get to the underworld when he died and the trauma of the dead guard was lodged in his brain
eh, actually, most people think that Shiro is instead the terminean counterpart to the carpenter that you rescue in gerudo's fortress, who goes by the exact same name. And I personally don't buy the "Link is in the underworld" theory personally, as 95% of the time Nintendo prefers simple explanations to what happens. a parallel universe is right up there; a simple explanation without stressing the details too much.
@@bramble553 hes not really a counterpart, hes a reference to the guard alot of people missed. shiro is too much of a common and plain name for me to believe theres any deep connection between the carpenter and the guard based only on it. but you are right. typically, moreso in OOTs time nintendo preferred the simpler reasons for things and always made games to be fun without a centralized conscious purposeful deep meaning. i think they like to let fans theorize though. i find it funny cause there are pages and pages on the net and several hour of videos picking apart the symbols and themes in Majoras Mask when for the most part, that game was thrown together so damn quick its a wonder anything made sense at all. i hear this question alot, "why is there a huge field and kids playing inside the moon?". the best answer ive heard was "cause it looks cool"
Gannondorf prepared for his attack by having the town gates closed, knowing it would slow down anyone who tried to escape. When fighting broke out in the castle, this guard moved to help the princess. Gathering Impa and Zelda, he leads them through a secret passageway from within the castle to an inaccessible side section of the town. Realizing they were being followed, he gives Impa and Zelda his horse that was stationed nearby and tells them to flee the town while he stands back and slows their pursuers. Realizing that the princess slipped through his fingers, Gannondorf rushes straight through the town to try and catch them. Zelda and Impa make it out, only just out of sight of Gannondorf. Gannondorf would have caught up to them, but he encounters Link on the way out, which slows him down enough for Zelda to successfully escape. Link enters, only to find the gate keeper oblivious to what happened. From his point of view, he opened the gate for Impa and Zelda to leave, and then a single other horse rushes out a minute later. Perhaps he had a message for the princess and was trying to catch up before her day trip. There's no indication that anything was wrong, so he assumes the best. Link then goes into to town, and people are talking about the rush of the 2 horses that just went by. Link finds the dying guard in the alleyway. He successfully fought off those who were chasing Impa and Zelda, but was fatally injured in the process. Knowing how dire the situation was, he tells Link what he overheard while he was leading Zelda to safety, only to then pass on.
@@oceanstar2294 it does but also still doesn't make sense. They left town on horse in a dash and hasty state, why would the guard think they are just out for a stroll...ohh and that big menacing black figure on the horse he was just "catching up" to pass a message. Perhaps remind Zelda to be home by 6:00pm for tea and scones.... GTFO with that theory lol
I love this fan-fic explanation, definitely my head-canon from now on! It also makes sense there would be a secret passageway, it's even been done later in the series in Twilight Princess!
To me it was always like this: most of the Hyrule castle guards were actually working for Ganondorf and the ones that were loyal to the royal family were killed during the invasion and he was the only one that managed to escaped to try and find Link and warn him since Zelda always talked about him. Also him being in the alleyway was cause he didnt know who he could trust and him hiding there in Hope's of Link finding him. This is why none of the townspeople saw any of Ganondorfs men head towards the castle since they were already there.
Especially considering Nintendo reused a lot of obscure/failed ideas in BotW... the Yiga Clan members who disguise themselves as normal people before working for Ganondorf could be a nod to this idea.
Me too. I feel like since Ganon is a Gerudo, he would have some of the thieves sneak in to surprise the king and help in the coup. Those were the "men" that Ganon had.
Impa and Zelda were hiding in the alley with the guard. Zelda informed the guard of the ocarina, temple of time, and the forest boy. Ganondorf searches the alley, and sees Impa and Zelda start to flee. The guard stands in Ganon's way, and Ganondorf lightning bolts him aside and charges full speed ahead.
Okay, but the video above actually tells us something likely about the game's development history, a real sort of archaeology of video games. Your comment tells us... three lines of fan fiction.
I always kind of assumed that this guard fought in the battle at the castle, and then tried to pursue Ganondorf as he chased after Zelda. Ganondorf doesn't need to have fought through Castle Town on his way to the Castle -- it's likely he was already there. We previously saw him in the throne room, and we know he was there on an ostensibly democratic mission to to the King of Hyrule. I would assume he was probably staying in the castle as an honored guest, prior to his attack. So the battle took place at the castle, the King was killed, the Princess fled, and Ganondorf pursued them. The guard, gravely wounded, followed Ganondorf as far as he could, but collapsed in the alley. The other guards aren't making a big deal of it the events in the castle because either 1.) they aren't all aware of it, or 2.) they're trying not to cause a panic. The other townsfolk may not even be aware of the dying guard in the alleyway. Hell, Ganondorf is a master of dark magics. How do we know all of the guards in the town and at the castle are not, at this point, illusions created by Ganondorf, or his soldiers in disguise.
Personally. He could have been another gate guard, that Zelda yelled as they past about the 'forest boy' then as Ganondorf ran past got hit or ran over trying to stop him, and wounded, crawled to where he thought hed be safe but no one saw him go down that ally, and he died of internal bleeding later on.
@@Dragonslayer-zp2ud The guard could have passed out in that ally, thus why he never called for help. Awoken by Link and sputtering his last words before passing out again... or as he takes his last breath.
At first, I thought this video was fake, a made up myth to fool the viewer. (Seriously, why would there be a guard in that random area to give Link such an obvious message?) -And the animation that followed looked too surreal to be real...right? Well I tried out my own copy of Oh+carina of time and played up to that point. Now imagine my shock to find this guy who I had missed every single time I played through the game.
Right! i wrapped the game like 12 times from when i was like 9yrs - 18yrs and within this year is when i found out about that dying guard ! idk how i could have missed something like this :///
We can see it from Lore's point of view: All Hyrule guards are currently Gannondorf men in disguise impersonating the guards or the guards now work for him. In this case the alley guard can easily be the last loyal guard and due to the proximity it can even be the guard at the town gate. From a mechanical point of view, its an indicator that you have chosen the wrong path and indicates that you should go to the Temple of time.
The other guards had no reaction to this whatsoever so it makes sense that some were under ganondorfs control, whether it be mine control or bribe. Also ganondorf doesn't have men in his army. He has undead warriors and the gerudo. So I think he controlled them somehow
The whole town and some of the soldiers were betraying the royal family! Link didn't realize that because the game gave us the perspective of a child!!! He didn't notice everyone was faking it! He managed to pass through alive to the temple of time because Ganondorf wanted him to open the gate of time so he could steal the triforce, and gave everyone orders to not touch Link.
Thats the finest idea behind this theory. You hit the key points of the original dialogue how is it supposed to be. The fact that Link opened the door of time was part of Ganonforf's plan from the beginning.
Holy shoot that is genius and it explains a lot but there is not really and proof for that, if anything the towns folk and most of the soldiers are just probably completely dumb and oblivious on what’s going on around them .-.
The key to all of this may be the line "I tried to stop Ganondorf's MEN from chasing them". The Gerudo tribe is comprised of only women with one male (in this case Ganondorf) being born every 100 years. Now to procure the tribe from becoming extinct, I believe the the gossip stone outside the ToT sheds some light this. "They say that Gerudo sometimes come to Hyrule Castle Town to look for boyfriends." I believe that the same men they are fraternizing with to produce offspring could also be swayed to serve the "King of Thieves". This means that the seemingly normal guards discovered after Zelda and Impa's exodus may have played a "Hydra/Shield" move when, as the dying guard stated, "Ganondorf betrayed our King". There may have been quite a few guards loyal to the royal family that perished, we were just fortunate enough to meet one that made it out of the castle before he passed.
I didn't make the connection to the Gerudo boyfriends (brilliant), but the MEN line stuck out to me as well. All Ganondorf's minions are Gerudo women or monsters. Your theory is my new headcanon now.
@@AndresRodriguez-mk9gc That may be the case. The thing about theories like this one is what parts of the information one chooses to take as literal. I enjoy these open discussions.
Remember in twilight princess there was a secret passage in a similar alleyway to the castle so they might have exited the castle through a secret passage and the people who saw the comotion didnt really pay attention
This is kinda spooky when you think about it. A guard at the gate not knowing about what just happened and everyone still going about their everyday lives. Yikes... 😖
@@darthboxOriginal have to nowadays though. So many school shootings and stuff that if you didn't ignore at least most of it, you'd spend a good bit of time probably depressed and shit.
You gotta think, back In the day, you had no way of knowing if someone happened in your town instantly unless you had some sort of warning system, ie: Bell tower, fire beacons, town messenger. If a soldier at the East side of town gets attacked by an army, the west side of town will have no idea. This also applies to towns that are nearby to each other. Think of the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. The fire beacons are lit and call for assistance from a neighboring town. Gondor to Rohan. The movie montage shows us that the distance is far apart as the beacons are lit in sequence at different times of day.
I don’t think he was there by mistake. I think it was expertly done, to have this wounded soldier who is about to die, in a town where the people are completely aloof and unaware as to what REALLY just happened. Zelda says that Ganondorf swears allegiance to the King. The townspeople seem quite oblivious and wrapped up in their own lives, and only Zelda and Link are truly suspicious about Ganondorf. So it stands to reason that the townspeople may not suspect much. The lone soldier may have been one of the few who suspected Ganondorf. For all we know, the betrayal could have taken place without a whole bunch of battling and it could have been something more low key and sneaky. Maybe only Impa and this soldier knew what was going on. Impa escaped with Zelda but the soldier may have hung back to fight off Ganondorf while she made a getaway. If so, he obviously sustained fatal wounds. As for him ending up in the alleyway, perhaps there’s some sort of passage from the castle to the town through there, and he collapsed before he could warn anyone or get help. Either way, the placement of the guard in the alleyway makes this interaction more eerie, considering how isolated, mysterious, and spooky this area ALREADY is during the gameplay. Mixing in this event against the cheery, blissfully unaware atmosphere of the town makes for some excellent juxtaposition. Mistake or not, I find him to be a cool plot device which definitely gives you a sense of foreboding.
Maybe, during all the commotion, the townspeople were too focused on Zelda, Impa and Ganondorf that they didn't notice a wounded guard slip into the back alley. The guard at the front gate was probably acting like nothing happened in an attempt to avoid causing a panic in the town, while the other guards are keeping people out of Hyrule Castle and covering up what actually happened (while dealing with the casualties) for that same reason.
Lol the townsfolk weren't aloof. Wrong choice of words. The townsfolk were oblivious to what was happening. Aloof is the complete opposite, as they were going along with their friends minding their business
I found him on my first playthrough back when I bought my game on release day. That part hit me hard inside, and harder as Navi spoke "He isn't moving anymore..." Brought me tears then, and still today. It was one of the first sequences that showed you this was not going to be a colorful game as the prior games in the series, and showed how serious this part of the timeline was going to become, and only got darker as people, friends made along the way, and even spirits like the Great Deku Tree, all died - some even before our very eyes while others hinted at their untimely deaths to later become the Sages. Even as Sages, Link lost many friends in this game he made and made you want to really kick Ganon's a$$ for what he caused in those seven long years. This series is my favorite still, and has special meaning to me for many reasons, some even more special. All I'll type for the most special reason for this series to be very dear to me is just this: Rin
I mean, A Link to the Past wasn't that colorful neither. In the very first part, the beggining of the game, your uncle almost dies trying to stop Ganon and you have to watch a corrupted world with corrupted villagers. Truly the pioneer on lore and darkness in Zelda's games.
Actually him being in the 3d version is easier to explain, as they never actually tried fixing most of the mistakes and bugs as to not lose the original feeling of the game
@@vaulttraveler3478 nah it’s definitely an excuse. There was a popular speed run at the time, and it just so happens that all the glitches shown in that run are fixed, and ONLY those glitches. They also attempted to fix the gravedigging tour heart piece bug, but instead just messed it up in the exact opposite way lol. The 3DS version is good but Grezzo seems to have taken some… interesting approaches.
I agree, this is probably some sort of story line change that was made partway through development; possibly you may have had to talk this guard originally before you can actually meet Zelda herself and receive the Ocarina of Time, or there was some sort rescue operation where you fight Ganondorf's men either at the castle or town before Zelda and Impa make their escape, AND THEN you meet this Guard...
Probably, I mean the story has changed a lot. You originally supposed to explore Ganondorf's castle as Link for the hub world, similarly to Banjo-Kazooie with how Banjo explored Gruntilda's lair. It's not like there hasn't already been a lot of plot changes already.
But why scrap this idea? Could it possibly been too much to code? That would have been an intensive scene: Creating new models for “Ganandorf’s men”, a re-skinned model of the town in shambles? A scripted event, added dialogue. Maybe it was too much for the n64 at the time? Or they were under a deadline at Nintendo and had to finish the game up?
@@ShonenBeats yeah, I mean when people faint they didn't move right xD unless it said "Hes not breathing anymore" then me and my childhood brain would immediately know that the guard has died😂
I don't know why people still have trouble with this. There's 2 ways to beat him you can take the easy but long way by starting the race, running straight to the temple of time, turning to a child and then going to the bridge and either leaving your 64 running for 7 years or playing the Sun's Song 5,110 times. The faster way is a little harder and deceitful but worth it. Once you finish the water temple as an adult you go to the little island in Zora's Domain, you have to have full magic and 4 green potions but then you stand at the edge of the island closest to the wall. Put on the iron boots and spam Din's Fire (mash the buttons as hard as you can because you lose heat with every frame) as soon as you run out of magic drink the potion and do it again and repeat until you run out of potions. If you did all of that fast enough the ice will melt and allow you into a pathway under the island that leads to the fabled Unicorn Fountain and the Triforce. Now that the easy stuff is out of the way you need to take the Triforce to the Temple of Time and Rauru will open the Temple of Light. This. Dungeon. Is. Tough. If you make it to the very end you'll receive the Four Sword. Now just use the spin attack with the sword to split yourself and have one clone sit at the bridge while you go start the race. As soon as you step out of the tent a cutscene will play of the Running Man running into the bridge and seeing you standing there. You'll win the race and be able to go back to him for a black rupee whenever you want.
@@jeremymitchem327 I really appreciate that response. I honestly did try it but it didn't work for me. I kept getting stuck trying to melt the ice in Zora's Domain, so I gave up. Luckily i found a work around! I went off the idea of playing the sun song a lot like you said, but instead do it 25,200 times. Make sure you do this as an adult though because that way it'll be amount to 69 years. By then Hyrule looks way worse, but the brightside is that the "Runner" will challenge you and break his ankles from arthritis he develops in old age. I still want to get the four sword so i am going to keep attempting ur strategy. I think it's solid, i just need to get the timing right.
ok here is how you win vs the running man. And as a bonus i will tell you what it really unlocks too. first you must talk to this guard, and continue on your way. You then must complete the grave keeper race first try in record time. (this is important.) following this complete the forest temple,(do not miss a single arrow shot.) now once done go back to temple of time, and go back and forward in time 3 times each. (it will assist you as up to this point each of these actions give you a massive lead.) now go to the fire temple. Now you must complete the fire temple in green tunic link. cannot change tunic at all. And finally go to the water temple. Now this is where it gets tricky. complete water temple with no tunic change and swapping to iorn boots no more then 25 times. once completed and water temple done, the way to the temple of light is revealed, Proceed up and recive our light sages blessings and the 4, swords as meantioned above. With all of this the gaurd will block the running man from entering the bridge in lost woods, and you will see him actually run up to you and stop, revealing the ruse. This is also how you unlock the hyrulian guard in the N64 smash bros too, as the rumble pack (if you have one) will reveal a new challenger in your first game, vs link. cheers and enjoy it proceede through the water temple as link in
@Awawawa CM Naw, your thinking of the cut cow hunting quest. Originally all the hidden cows in Hyrule were tied to a sidequest in Lon Lon ranch where after Kicking out Ingo and bringing Talon home, you'd be asked by Malon to find the cows which fled the farm. The reward, of course, was a piece of heart and presumbly a tease by malon hence the Nude assest. The Temple of Light is only relevant because one of the cows went there.
The standing soldiers betrayed the king by supporting Ganondorf! The Town people are the rebels celebrating!! The door guard saw everything and said nothing!!! The dying guard went to the alley through the town square and nobody helped him!!! This was a very sinister betrayal of the royal family! With everyone trying to keep the appearances! Link was actually in danger walking by these people, but they let him through because Ganondorf was waiting for him to open the door of time!!!
Gandorf: YOU SHALL NOT PA- Eh? What am I saying? Of course you'll pass... PASS AWAY, THAT IS! Now to throw the Triforce of Courage into Death Mountain... Lord of the Rings heroes: Wait a second... That's our quest with the ring. Link: Wait, what's with this ring? And who the heck is that? Ganondalf the conflicted: I... I have no idea what's going on anymore.
As a kid, it was especially creepy to watch a guard die in front of you as the cheerful Castle Town theme looms overhead. I remembering encountering this and being truly scared of Ganondorf for the first time. Did anyone else find the guard on their first playthrough like I did?
I found out today this even exists. But same as Many Del Mal, I wouldn't have understood it. However, I wish I found it on my own, even in a later playthrough...
I wasn't scared, but it made me really sad, because like he said, everyone else is acting normal, and you can't tell anyone about it. This guard just like
I like the idea that the attack on the castle was an internal affair, Ganondorf using gerudo soldiers disguised as Hyian soldiers to have an internal coup. This would explain why the damage in town is minimal and the other guards are seemingly oblivious to the carnage is going on because the guards on the outside of the castle have no idea that there was an internal coup.
Interesting theory. When making Majora's Mask they wanted to reuse as many assets as possible. I didn't know about the dying guard in OoT, so I assumed those were new animations. Everyone in Termina is a counterpart to someone in Hyrule. The Ikana guard is evidently a counterpart to the alley guard.
As I kid I actually watched my uncle and older brother try to figure this out. They tried a lot of different things to get another response from the guard, or from anyone about what just took place with Zelda.
I played this game over 15 years ago and this is the first time I have seen this guard and it gave me goose bumps. Like this is a total Easter egg, an unsettling Easter egg, for me. Thank you for showing me something new.
"Ganondorf's men..." The guard mentions Ganondorf's men. When have we ever seen Ganondorf have MEN serving him? That's an interesting mystery right there...
There's a guard at the castle gate that accepts bribes at one point in the story. You can pay him rupees to open the gate. It's a pretty small timeframe in the story he'll do this before shit hits the fan. I want to say it might've been in the og version, but it's definitely in the 3ds version.
I replay this game once every couple of years. Had a nostalgic trip when I lived in Japan from 2015-2018. After my 20 year anniversary play through, I couldn’t believe I missed this guy in the back alley all these years. It was like finding the last secret in your favorite game, and realizing it was an actual in game death startled me.
I played this game entirely for the first time in my life in 2020 because of the fake veyeruss nonsense. It was interesting playing in the Spirit Temple when before, I had only seen a few scenes that my then-"friend" had shown me. I also replayed Paper Mario for the perhaps fifth or sixth time. It was so empty playing it without my sister, and knowing what would happen. It lost its charm.
Brought my old n64 out during covid and now have decided to replay it once every couple years or so as well until my nephew is old enough to play it with me
Ocarina of Time is like Final Fantasy VII, it changed a lot of times over development but little tidbits remain from previous stages. It's like the Texas sign in Tifa's bar, 7th Heaven.
Also signs calling it "Tyfer bar." There's numerous implications that you-know-who was meant to die at the crater instead of the forgotten city as well.
Mega Zeta well he's not wrong, you can bribe the guard at the castle the second time you try to go inside. and you also bribe the one in kakariko village with the mask. two corrupted knights in a game where there are 5-6 knights top, it's a message.
I too have that fear. The first few times I enter an area in a game, I examine EVERYTHING. I've gotten better about that (don't have as much free time as I used to), but I still look around a LOT.
FOMO is practically the development strategy of most genres of video games now. Make a game with a bunch of stuff to find that the player might miss, and you can convince people to keep playing a game they don't find otherwise rewarding.
I would guess that advancing the timeline and having castle town in a semi ruinous state or war like state would complicate side quest and games as a child. Anything you didnt do as a child up to that point would be inaccessible. i.e heart pieces, the happy mask salesman, bombchu alley and so on. The events were probably left out and just a few dialogue changes. But essentially time is at a standstill. I would have liked to replay it years later and be motivated to get those items before zelda has to flee.
I like my idea about it: All the other guards sided with Ganondorf, except for that one guard, which is why the others beat him to death in the back ally, away from prying eyes. Though they didn't do a good job of it, as he was able to relay a message to Link.
Except he says he tried to stop Ganondorf's "men", so presumably they are the ones that attacked him. Yet we never see said men. There being some traitors among the guards is one of the better theories for who he could be talking about. It's not an asspull, just trying to make the line make sense when Ganondorf had no men/followers.
That may be the case. The guards and the people of the town figured Ganondorf was more powerful and rather than standing against him they quickly fell in line. Only one guard was brave enough to fight back and he stood alone.
I remember finding the dying gaurd as a kid and since me and my grandpa were playing it together, my grandpa wasn't one for exploring very much unless there was a visible clue that something was there (like a cracked area against a wall or the sound of a gold skulltula scratching around nearby). So, I was the first one between us to find that guard all because my grandpa would always go straight for the temple of time instead of just exploring around the marketplace and back alley.
When they did the remake they really only wanted quality of life changes and to fix game breaking bugs. He's still there precisely because so many people found them in the first edition of the game.
It always made me upset as a kid that he was dying alone and the townspeople went about their business as if nothing happened. When I played as an adult, I realized how all too real this outcome was. A lone soldier who gave his all to protect what he held dear in his heart knowing he failed, and the ignorant townspeople who just watched and became redeads.
That is real man bystander effect. Nobody gives a fuck until it happens to them. Same that happened during covid unvaccinated people got treated horribly and nobody stood up for them. Only bystanders are truly evil cause they use their mass to support bad shit. I guarantee you if people stood up for their rights and what was right nobody could ever do bad shit and we would be living in an utopia.
That anxiety you talked about in the beginning is something I got like *crazy* from Majora's mask. Great game though! I couldn't quite get over my fear enough back then, in the days before I really knew how to find all the info online even though it was there, to figure out how to get things under control and be able to replay the timeline faster and then get to do other things. I always just freaked out and struggled to get the moon's tear and thought I had to go back to the tower or something.
I've literally been playing this game since 2000, I believed to know every single secret of this game, and yet, it still has more details and missed things to offer, that's how you know a game is really great.
Creepy. I've never been to this channel and decided to replay Ocarina of Time a few days ago, I found the dying guard for the first time ever, having also overlooked it, and this was just uploaded. Thanks I guess for more insight. I was baffled I missed this after all these years.
I remember reading a statement somewhere around when the 3ds remake first came out saying the remake struggled to keep the general feel of *everything* the same as the original game. This went so deep as to maintain glitches that were present in the most up to date N64 version of the game. It's not much of a stretch to imagine they kept that guard in there just in case a few players did find him and went back to find him again just like they would a popular glitch. Also, assuming your theory of a potential third state is true (I'm inclined to believe it tbh) I can imagine there being a midway point in development where they are working on puzzles that cross the timelines and realizing it could be problematic if Castle Town is destroyed before the player has a chance to finish like the Mask quest for example. It would make a lot of sense if they started off trying to make the coup a dark and brutal affair that decimates the town, only to double back on it later down the line.
Am I the only one that remembers a guard standing back there in the alley when you go back in time to get the bomb-chu's? Or is it that damn Mandela effect? Lol
I remember something about talking with certain people before finding him .. or something but in some kind of way he should give you something before he dies .. i think... so far my memory : S
Ya know, i think he does stand around in the back alley but at the same time i also remember that its empty... i cant decide if the latter is true or not because of the night time effect and i think theres dogs too
Wasn't there also a side quest in that alley? My brothers and I explored every inch of this game back in 98-99 we knew all the secrets, hints and Easter eggs because we had a strategy guide and there was a website that had even more hints and Easter eggs that was updated daily and we used to print out the stuff we found interesting or useful. Interestingly enough we never encountered the dying guard. I swore we knew this entire game like the back of our hands so it's weird we never heard or read about the guard. But I distinctly remember there being something else back there. I remember one of the townsfolk dogs running around back there as well as an old man who resembled the mask guy and even a door that lead to a "shooting range " where you had to hit rupees with your arrows to win. I could have sworn it was all located in that alley at different points in the game. But I haven't played this since 2001 so my memory is definitely fuzzy

Having grown up originally playing Zeldas 1 and 2 on the NES, I always thought that it was meant to hint that the townsfolk were now fakes - specifically, the shape shifting Ache bats from Zelda II. As an adult now I’m sure this wasn’t the case but I still think it’s creepy enough of an idea that it’s now my headcanon each time I play through.
Jonathan Jones How’s it useless? I understand money is money, but come on, it’s pretty misleading when it’s a 10 minute video, yet only after 4 minutes is actually about the title.
I just started replaying this on my 3DS and just found this as well. I've played it so many times growing up and I've never seen it or heard of it. Sorta glad I never saw it as a kid because it was a bit dark. I really appreciate this breakdown of the scene and your theory of it, so incredibly strange
@Lucrecia Adams-Tyer Yes. The guard in the castle is wearing elite armor (white in color, but I could be wrong about that) and a tall helmet. I am positive that they are both different guards.
Desmond's Corner well yes people can change clothes but they are knights wearing armor based on rank or how highly respected they are. So the elite knight has the title of elite so he gets special armor that looks different to signify ranking while the other guard gets regular knight armor. TLDR; Can’t just casually wear your wrong armor
Maybe the thing about ganon and the guard is some time-travel shenanigan? As if the townspeople had forgotten the events happening, but that guard managed to escape?
OoT is one of the first games I ever played and one I revisited countless times since a chils. Done so many 100% runs of it and explored so much. I've never seen this... I'm utterly shocked
I know what happened, Ganondorf used the memory wipe from Men in Black on the whole town, and that guard was yote all the way from the castle through Ganondorf's Warlock Punch.
The dying guard was the guard in the guardhouse. He was mortally wounded trying to allow Zelda to escape. He then dragged his mortally wounded body into the alley to die, away from all the townspeople. Seven years after his death, he becomes a ghost and obsessed with collecting the Poes of Hyrule for some reason. He then becomes the creepy guy who buys the big Poes from you and eventually gives you the bottle. The empty bottle is the thing he was supposed to give you, not the Ocarina of Time but he died before he could.
Another possible outcome is that Gannons men could have been sleeper cells type thing. Undercover guards. Maybe all the guards in the castle now are gannons men who discreetly took over the castle to avoid panic from the townsfolk
What I find really interesting is how he knows that Zelda was waiting for a boy from the forest. Did Zelda tell all of the other guards about Link or was it just this guard? If she had told the other guards, they would have had a bigger reaction when they saw Link. Also, the way he says “I’ve finally met you” implies that he was actually eager to meet Link. It is also interesting how he actually tells Link to go to the temple of time. None of the other guards even mention this. Why was this guard the only one who was supportive? Maybe he had another role in the game, which is why Ganondorf targeted him instead of the other guards.
That was always my theory, that he was Zelda’s personal guard Or something. He was probably with Zelda and Impa helping them escape, and got injured In the process.
My theory is that the guard was heavily wounded at the castle, he knew he wouldn't make it out alive so he snuck out of the castle to see his family in castle town, his house was in the back alley, he collapsed before he could get home, and that's when you find him
The video has a theory, tied to how video games are developed. You have fan fiction. I can't blame you for thinking it's a "theory", because most of the "theories" on RUclips are just fan fiction.
Theory: The guard could have chased after Ganondorf taking out his men and the guards who stayed hid the bodies.Meaning Ganondorf wounded the guard who tried to save Zelda. The guard would have hidden so the townsfolk wouldn't freak out.
I figured that Impa took a secret way out of the castle that lead to the alleyway. The guard fought Gannon in the alleyway an the guard at the gate said what he did to keep the townsfolk from panicking.
My guess is that it might explain that small corner of Hyrule field to the left of Castle Town. It's possible that there might have been plans for a hidden path into Castle Town similar to how you got into and out of the castle in A Link to the Past.
I remember seeing this guard when I was playing through as a kid. I didn't think much of it and thought he had just passed out after being hit by a horse, and also figured the horse chase might have gone through that alley as well. Then I forgot about it
Maybe he’s a ghost. Hence why he “tried” to stop them and why no one ever saw him, and when you see him die, he’s re-enacting his death, however he’s a ghost that never disappears.

@@reitairue2073 No, he's saying it's dark for a kids game. It's supposed to be conversational and you misunderstood it, then were rude about it.
Eh, I headcanon it as this:
Ganondorf's men had infiltrated the Hyrulean guards.
(Having died this way in BotW, I can totally see someone being mortally wounded this way...)
As he made his way to the town, he realised that if the other guards were traitors, who else could be?
He realised that couldn't trust anybody. That anyone could be yet another of Ganondorf's people.
So, he slipped into the alleyway to rest and figure out what to do. No-one in Castle Town saw him, as they were still reeling from the horses running through so quickly.
But he quickly realises that his wounds are more serious than he thought, and he's going to die in that alleyway alone.
However, Link finds him, and he quickly tells him what had happened, forgetting in his rush to mention not to trust anyone.
As he slips away, he's merely grateful that at least someone was there for him at the end.
That's a pretty good explanation.
Yikes...I dig that.
What's the point of "headcanon"?
That's perfect. Same way I see it. The townspeople are oblivious because they only see Impa with Zelda fleeing from Ganondorf. They don't know anything about what happened in the castle or why Impa would take Zelda and run. The guard was wounded defending Zelda and she mentioned the boy from the forest, he hides in the alley because he wants to pass on his message to the boy without Ganondorf's minions finding him.

He had direct knowledge of something Zelda wanted. That means he was probably one of Zelda's personal guards.
@@ShadowSkyX massively underrated comment
duuuuuuuude, omgggg
😦
Link being 16 is not an adult LOL

IMO Shiro was based on this guard that most never even got to meet before he died.

This comment makes more sense than the video
@@oceanstar2294 it does but also still doesn't make sense.
That would make sense

Good theory, would also make sense as to why all of the other guards are acting like nothing happened. Because they are part of the coverup.

But what avout Ganobdorf's "men"?

Okay, but the video above actually tells us something likely about the game's development history, a real sort of archaeology of video games. Your comment tells us... three lines of fan fiction.
@@MegaZeta It is speculation, friend. Not a competition.
I personally agree with this.. or perhaps he didn't want to disturb the townspeople and so he went there after being attacked
@@Dragonslayer-zp2ud The guard could have passed out in that ally, thus why he never called for help. Awoken by Link and sputtering his last words before passing out again... or as he takes his last breath.

I smell a liar. Also aren't you a kid?

Men could refer to mercenaries. That’s what I 1st though when I talked to the guard years ago.

Okay, but that doesn't square with anything else going on nearby in the game

追っ手を 食 "Otte-o" is Followers.
Not specially men so surely Gerudo, NPCs said there was Gerudos in town.

@05r it does make sense tell us why not??
Except he says he tried to stop Ganondorf's "men", so presumably they are the ones that attacked him. Yet we never see said men.
There being some traitors among the guards is one of the better theories for who he could be talking about. It's not an asspull, just trying to make the line make sense when Ganondorf had no men/followers.
That may be the case. The guards and the people of the town figured Ganondorf was more powerful and rather than standing against him they quickly fell in line. Only one guard was brave enough to fight back and he stood alone.
I have played this game countless times over the years and never talked to this guard. This is so interesting.

Honestly an interesting watch, but the most I got out of this was that there's a zelda manga for me to read
I've had this game since Christmas of 1998. This is me just finding out about this NPC.

Guard: That out there...that's the End.......game

"We're in the Endgame now."
Lol
I also remember this. I do not recall the guard dying while sitting on the ground. Maybe they replace the guard when it's time to access the ToT?
I remember something about talking with certain people before finding him .. or something but in some kind of way he should give you something before he dies .. i think... so far my memory : S
Ya know, i think he does stand around in the back alley but at the same time i also remember that its empty... i cant decide if the latter is true or not because of the night time effect and i think theres dogs too
I remember the dying guard in adult link world, it's fucking weird yo

When I saw this when I was in kindergarten I literally went upstairs and cried 😂

I just started replaying this on my 3DS and just found this as well. I've played it so many times growing up and I've never seen it or heard of it. Sorta glad I never saw it as a kid because it was a bit dark. I really appreciate this breakdown of the scene and your theory of it, so incredibly strange
Theory: its the guard that threw a bomb at you from the window.
No. Both are wearing different armor.
@Lucrecia Adams-Tyer Yes. The guard in the castle is wearing elite armor (white in color, but I could be wrong about that) and a tall helmet.
I am positive that they are both different guards.
@@thenifell You are correct, the guard at the castle wears elite armor
@@thenifell you...realize that people can change clothes? and that someone who wants to kill link isn't obligated to where the clothes you'd expect?
Desmond's Corner well yes people can change clothes but they are knights wearing armor based on rank or how highly respected they are. So the elite knight has the title of elite so he gets special armor that looks different to signify ranking while the other guard gets regular knight armor. TLDR; Can’t just casually wear your wrong armor
Maybe the thing about ganon and the guard is some time-travel shenanigan?
As if the townspeople had forgotten the events happening, but that guard managed to escape?
Or perhaps it's a time loop type thing?
Maybe the guards at the castle DID let him out..

seems legit
The dying guard was the guard in the guardhouse. He was mortally wounded trying to allow Zelda to escape. He then dragged his mortally wounded body into the alley to die, away from all the townspeople.
Seven years after his death, he becomes a ghost and obsessed with collecting the Poes of Hyrule for some reason. He then becomes the creepy guy who buys the big Poes from you and eventually gives you the bottle.
The empty bottle is the thing he was supposed to give you, not the Ocarina of Time but he died before he could.
Exactly , this guy made an 11 minutes video just to say that lol.
Mind blown
Actually the poe hunter is the soldier that was in the same room 7 years prior. He even mentions his. Interest in ghosts
Thomas best answer yet I believe it
hitmonchan52 He is talking about that one, but he is wrong as that guard is still there after the other one dies
Another possible outcome is that Gannons men could have been sleeper cells type thing. Undercover guards. Maybe all the guards in the castle now are gannons men who discreetly took over the castle to avoid panic from the townsfolk
This guy’s videos remind me of having to fill out the word count in an essay.
lmao right he goes on and on and on and on

True... He said the word dying gaurd so many times 😂
I think the guard was heading to the kokiri forest to tell link to go to the temple of time, but was too wounded so he went to the alley to rest.
That was always my theory, that he was Zelda’s personal guard
Or something. He was probably with Zelda and Impa helping them escape, and got injured
In the process.
My theory is that the guard was heavily wounded at the castle, he knew he wouldn't make it out alive so he snuck out of the castle to see his family in castle town, his house was in the back alley, he collapsed before he could get home, and that's when you find him
That's oddly wholesome
F
The video has a theory, tied to how video games are developed. You have fan fiction. I can't blame you for thinking it's a "theory", because most of the "theories" on RUclips are just fan fiction.
holy shit there's a closed door in the town right
Theory:
The guard could have chased after Ganondorf taking out his men and the guards who stayed hid the bodies.Meaning Ganondorf wounded the guard who tried to save Zelda.
I'm not sure if i ever encountered this guard, interesting to know it exists, huh
I did...
I always encounter him after getting the Ocarina.
...Or I ditch the ocarina and go speak to the dying guard.
I remember seeing this guard when I was playing through as a kid. I didn't think much of it and thought he had just passed out after being hit by a horse, and also figured the horse chase might have gone through that alley as well. Then I forgot about it
Eyyy nice to see Star Ocean get mentioned
yeah dude, made me really happy!
My fav game of all time still to this day. XD So yessss.
Maybe he’s a ghost. Hence why he “tried” to stop them and why no one ever saw him, and when you see him die, he’s re-enacting his death, however he’s a ghost that never disappears.
That's fuckin dark
I thought that too. That the guard was a ghost
My mans over thinking it big time 😂 he’s there to direct people to the right location if they somehow forget where to go
@LazerDog Laz it really does. Developers just put him there for that reason hence why no one mentions a fight going on.
That's actually the best and most agreeable conclusion as to why he was there.
