Lovely stuff ! I grew up about a mile and a half to your left in Marske ! I'm off to one of the Hebrides (Islay) in July and am hoping to do some recording myself.
Thanks mate. I’m a big fan of Filey to be honest but this made a really nice change and I think I love it equally. Hope you manage to get some good recordings - what kit are you planning to use? Love to hear it once it’s done.
@@EQAVOX I have an Edirol R-09 and an old Sony Stereo mic, but TBH I'm happy to take advice about stepping it up a bit. Needs a proper windshield for starters.
@@Fexobs I’ve never used the R09 but I’ve heard some good things around it. There’s a really good option that’s recently come out that is reasonably priced and has 32-bit float recording (no more levels clipping). That’s the Zoom H1 essential that I’ve used in a few videos now. A company called radius do a really good windshield for it at a reasonable price too. You can get cheaper options for modern recorders too if you need to and are happy with setting levels etc and recording at 24bit. Drop me a message if you like on Facebook sometime and I can pop some suggestions through. I enjoy 32bit recording with the zoom as you don’t have to set levels or worry about the audio clipping, you literally just hit record and it does its thing. The 32bit float provides extensive extra headroom in your audio so clipping is generally a thing of the past (unless you overload the mics - but that’s pretty hard to do).
Cheers mate. I found it fascinating that the mics were picking up voices that were obviously travelling through the metal of the pier as vibrations. I’ve not experienced that before and it was pretty cool 👌.
I really like the recording quality of the Tascam X6. The Zoom H1e does a good job too, but I would like to hear the X6 on the same spot (at 9:50), maybe it would sound even more detailed…?
@@oli77sch sadly I didn’t record there with both of the recorders - that was definitely a missed opportunity. I have to say that of both units I do think the tascam x6 has the edge in terms of detail over the H1E. I shall have to remember to do more comparison style things in the future. I do think the X6 would have got more detail and crispness there than the zoom overall.
I think the x8 is a great recorder - I just wish they built these things better. They do feel very flimsy. Having said that, I had a failure of my tripod attachment recently and my x6 fell to the floor from around 4 feet onto some jagged rocks. I thought that was definitely going to be the end of it but there was absolutely no issue - not a scratch, crack or dent - the screen survived the impact and works flawlessly too still and it is still fully functional. I was amazed by this. It could have been a total fluke to be honest - but the fact it survived is still mind blowing to me. Obviously I’d never recommend dropping it, but I always said that I didn’t think it would survive a fall and it turns out I was wrong 😑.
@@EQAVOX haha possibly a super lucky fall in the perfect spot or... maybe its mad of titanium alloy under all the cheap plastics! haha stupid way to build something but who knows with tascam lol
@4ksightandsound I've been trying to get an answer about that hum issue for a while now. I wanted to buy a Tascam but only if that issue has been fixed. So if that's true, I appreciate you letting us know. Is there any source of them announcing the fix?
@@jochisfx they say they fixed it in all the newer models out now there have been confirmed people saying they got the new version and tested it and the hum is gone.
A good days field recording, the seaside never disappoints 👍
Thanks mate. Totally agree - good for the soul (if you have good wind protection - otherwise it’s just frustrating haha).
@@EQAVOX …my favourite mic for waves is the Audio-Technica BP4025 large condenser stereo. It just does a good job.
You’ve got some good recordings 👍

Great vid. Contact mics sounded rad. Zoom sounded good too.
Cheers mate. I need to do more with the contact mics I think 🤔. Need to get more creative.
This was really cool! Hope your good Ryan 😊
