Zoom H2 Essential - Train Station Ambience Recordings - Eastleigh Train Station
Welcome this video in which we take @ZoomSoundLab latest offering, the Zoom H2 Essential, to the train station in Eastleigh to capture some ambience & train sounds.
All sounds are straight from the recorder, with no post processing. Levels aren't altered, there is no low cut applied and nothing has been tweaked in post.
I wanted to demonstrate what it is capable of "out of the box" with no editing.
All recordings were captured with the front and rear mics active with 120 degrees selected.
This video is not endorsed and I am not sponsored at all. I purchased this with my own money and just enjoy demonstrating what audio gear is capable of.

@@Kellysnorthshore thanks Kelly. Totally agree. I think it would prove too noisy for quiet ambiences where distant birds are chirping for example - the self noise would probably overpower these subtle sounds. I’d opt for a zoom F3 and external mics for this sort of thing though. I’m hoping to explore this further in a couple more videos soon - something more mature based and hopefully a comparison video between this and its predecessor the H2N. I’ve not had time to do those yet but hopefully should get around to it soon.

I also want to get a stereopair of the clippies with my recorder to buy. And the plugs change from between the h1e / h2e and the x6. So first buying the zoom recorders and then upgrading later and then also having to get new clippies is not a fun thought. On the other hand the h1e is so damn cheap now that I can get both the recorder, the clippies and wind protection for the price of the x6. @@SimplePianoMusic Hi mate. That’s strange, because it doesn’t sound that noisy to me. Are you boosting the signal in post at all? If you’re recording a piano from a distance, so the sound is being picked up fairly quietly - and you have to boost the signal, you will also be boosting the noise level too. If you record the piano with it very close to the sound source, you should get a good signal to noise ratio and should barely hear the self noise - if at all. Sometimes these recorders can have quite noisy headphone outputs. So if you listen back on headphones, it may sound noisier than it actually is. This could be what you are experiencing. Maybe take the files from the device and listen to them with headphones on a computer if possible as this will eliminate any potential noise being introduced via the headphone jack. Other than that, I’m not 100% what the issue could be unless it’s the unit itself that’s potentially faulty. Hope this helps mate.

Great recording! Could you, please, say something on the noise level of H1e with EM272 vs internal mics? I have seen that many reviewers of H1e complain on the noise. @EQAVOX Месяц назад

@@sergeyf77 hi mate. Thanks for listening and glad you enjoyed it. I definitely find using external mics like the clippys to be a huge improvement over the onboard mics. Having said that, I’m not an expert on this sort of thing. I think the EIN is around -120 with the Zoom H1E which isn’t great really, but it’s not horrendous either. More sensitive external mics like the clippys allow you to get a better signal to noise ratio, so the noise level I believe will be the same, but you’ll get a much louder signal with more sensitive mics, which means that boosting the signal and boosting the noise is much less likely to be required. I've noted on watching back that there are some instances where the audio skips for a microsecond on some of the Ilfracombe videos. All these videos and sounds were recorded in extremely windy conditions, and I had to locate areas where the wind wasn't so violent to record sounds. These little "blips" in the audio are sudden, very strong blasts of air getting through to the microphones. Wind protection can only go so far, and these blasts sadly caused some minor blips here and there. the fact that I could get anything at this location in these conditions was nothing short of miraculous, so I'll take those little blips with a pinch of salt.

@@glhf1 hey 👋 glad you enjoyed the video cheers. I think in terms of something you can just have in a pocket or bag and get out quickly to record sounds, the Sony A10 is easily the best. It’s one of the smallest out there, smaller than the om systems LS-P5, and I take it out and about a lot when I don’t want to be messing around with anything. The Roland R07 is a great option too, but it’s a bit larger than the Sony A10. Another one worth considering is Zooms latest offering - the Zoom H1 Essential. It’s small, pocketable, 32-bit float and really easy to use. It’s also considerably cheaper than the Sony A10 and easily competes in terms of sound quality to the A10 (at least to my ear 👂). I think sound quality is totally subjective, some may prefer the sound of the A10 and some may prefer the Zoom H1E, whilst others may prefer the LS-P5 - it totally depends on what you prefer the sound of. Something to note with the A10 tbh ough is that you can change the positioning of the mics which is really cool, that’s a feature the zoom H1E, LS-P5 or Roland R07 don’t offer and it is nice to have sometimes. Hope this helps, I may have just made things worse and added more options into the mix though haha. 😝

Cant really find the details of a sound recording range comparison between lsp1 and h1e. But I think I'm into the metal build:) The research rabbit hole continues lol.
