Here in Atlanta, the Olympic Stadium was designed from the start to be converted after the Games to a baseball park for the Atlanta Braves; it served as Turner Field for 20 years. When the Braves moved out, it was taken over by Georgia State University, which converted it again, this time to their football stadium. The swimming venue and Olympic village are now part of Georgia Tech, and Centennial Olympic Park is a popular venue in the heart of the city.
Atlanta doesn’t seem like an Olympic city anymore since 1996 summer games. Just sayin. I’ve always wondered why Atlanta is having a hard time getting the Olympics to come back and the same with St. Louis which hosted there summer games in 1904.
@jimpern I do not like the Atlanta Braves because they moved out of a historic stadium that was built for only the Braves to use with natural grass, and named for Ted Turner; they moved out after only 20 years. The Mets were in Shea Stadium for more than 40 years, the Phillies were in Veterans Stadium for more than 35 years.
Oslo, Norway was the Favorite to host the 2022 Winter games, but the IOC started demanding too much stuff and Oslo told them to get lost, and we ended up with the Disaster that was Bejing. A lot of cites are saying no to the IOC. Paris and LA were the only cities to Bid on the 2024 games, so they gave the 24 games to Paris and the 28 games to LA.
The IOC is now awarding Cities the Olympics almost 10 years in advance and awarding them to major cities that do not need to build venues. Paris and LA are good examples of using what is already there. Although I do not understand why Olympic Softball in 2028 will be played in Oklahoma.
I can explain that. The NCAA World Series of Softball is hosted every year in Oklahoma. No need to build anything when you have professional purpose built stadiums and accommodations from having to house multiple collegiate teams already for a sport that will only be in the Olympics that year. Yes, I know Ok and Ca are not near each other.
I live a few train stops from the London 2012 Olympic park. Whilst it's the home to my least-favourite football team, it's a usable public space built on what was wasteland. The swimming pool is now a public baths, but one where you can watch our top divers practice on the up length. Brit-bashing is a popular sport in itself, but we got this one right at least.
Always seemed weird to me when cities can't make use of another public pool. People love pools. And there never seemed to be enough of them growing up.
Agreed! It seems like there’s always a demand for venues like that… they just gotta build it into the fabric of the city rather than isolated out away from everyone where no one can easily get to it
It's because public pools in leftist cities have not only been crime ridden but expensive for the taxpayers to fund. Don't forget, Joe Biden had to beat up that bad dude Cornpop to keep the kids rubbing his legs safe.
I think Paris got it right this year (and kept cost down) using the seine for the opening ceremony (very cleverly in my opinion ! EVEN if some folks have panned it it was inovitive and something not seen before! They prioritised the use of existing and temporary venues over new construction. Excluding the Olympic Village, the only major building to have been created for the event is the timber Aquatics Centre so i Doubt they will have the problem a lot of thes hosts had after the games finish! Also in the past when Manchester UK (near my home town) hosted the 2002 comonwealth games they did build a lot of venues BUT they I am glad to say) are still in use the staduim is now home to manchester city footbal club , the cycling velodrome across the road (that was already there) continues to be used and MANY GB cycling Olimpians use it to train! also the same with the aquatics centre ! I suppose its hit and miss on where they build the venues and what they do with them after ...if they are to far away for folks to use then the people wont come and use them ect! I am glad the IOC has started to take this into account too as it tarnishes the Olympics reputation with so many host cities ending up like Athens even though its not the IOCs fault they are taking steps to mitigate another Athens etc!
You did not mention Salt Lake City's 2002 winter games. ALL 13 venues have been up and running since the Olympics left. Even during the summer, athletes are practicing on the facilities. Even the big SKI JUMPS. Not only are the venues in use but they have been upgraded. Probably one reason why Salt Lake was chosen to host the 2034 games. I hope everyone gets a chance to visit who really wants to since they will be at home. The IOC has never asked Salt Lake for anything because they didn't need to. I think they see the legacy and commitment not just the olympics but TO THE ATHLETES. 🎉🎆♥️🇺🇸
@@mikect500almost all of the cities that host the venues (Salt Lake City, Park City, Ogden, West Valley and Kearns) have very liberal governments. Provo is the lone exception.
@@bobaagard Salt Lake had to answer to Utah. All those leftist agenda cities are in the red on a regular basis so they have to go to grownups for big purchases.
I think u need to do a video of cities that used the Olympics as ways to improve their infrastructure. As much criticism as SLC received going into the 2002 Winter games, the infrastructure upgrades have greatly improved the city: Trax, I-15, Rice Eccles Stadium, ski resorts and other venues, even the Grand America, and Utah’s liquor laws.
Yes, but actually five summer, and five winter. This way, each city/country will know they'll be hosting the Olympics once every 20 years. My suggestions: SUMMER 1. Los Angeles, USA 2. Rio De Janerio, Brazil 3. Tokyo, Japan 4. Sydney, Australia 5. Athens, Greece WINTER 1. Zurich, Switzerland 2. Berlin, Germany 3. New York, USA 4. Vancouver, Canada 5. Beijing, China
Problem is, cities will trip over themselves to waste tax dollars to 'host' the games. The Olympics will NEVER lose money. The local cities taxpayers need to stand up and put their collective foot down and say "no tax dollars".
@ingridfitz5677 ummm... not sure how to break this to you.... maybe you should consider moving in the next, oh I don't know, say within the next 4 years?
The host country has to be more focused on after and the sports that city has and use what they have or create a culture of sports or the countries should make a national sports program and university so that everything is used again. In Sydney the athletes village was converted straight away, the pool centre was reduced in seating and swimming learns and the public could use the facilities and they had already booked swimming meets, the other stadiums are all used or made into something else.
Yeah Sydney's Olympic Stadium is now an 80,000 seat stadium that annually host NRL (National Rugby League) Grand Final and other finals series. The basketball stadium is now called Qudos Bank Area which now hosts regular NBL matches, concerts and entertainments...and so on. Lots of facilities that were used for the Olympics are still being used today.
Olympic’s need to rotate locations and use existing venues and the only thing would be to develop the Olympic village or set aside hotels and convention centers.
Agreed. They had to build a whole infrastructure to help facilitate Russia’s continued doping of their athletes. I mean it’s one thing to figure out how to open the tamper proof bottles, but it’s another thing for the FSB to switch those samples.
Actually the London athletes housing is now given free to the people invading Great Britain. At British taxpayers expense of course. The football stadium is also being supported by the British taxpayers so that the players and teams can make more profits because they don't have to support their own stadium anymore.
The Olympics should be held in 1 city only. This will mitigate cost and much better for everyone. It will remove corruption due to bidding too. LA is the best city to hold this event every 4 years. Salt Lake City can host the winter Olympics every 4 years too .
This is why I cannot support the Olympics. You didn't even touch on several other massive failures. Like you I hope they can move in a more sustainable manner.
Stop spreding fake news. Go read before saying bs. There is no abandoned venues in Rio. There is no Swmming pool as it was a temporary venue and is alredy dismantled.
Where is geographical centre of metropolitan Sydney? Is it Sydney CBD or is it Parramatta? I would say Parramatta. Parramatta is not far from Sydney Olympic Park (SOP). Remember that Sydney Olympic Park was an industrial wasteland before SOP was built. After the Olympic Games was finished, SOP was turned into a business/industrial park that also hosted sporting events and other entertainment events. Over the last 10 years, a lot of high-density residential housing have been built around SOP, which will gradually change the nature of the SOP and increase its usage. The biggest changes will occur when the Metro West train line and Light Rail line (Parramatta LR Stage 2) are completed.

The velodrome cycling track at Stone Mountain Park was dismantled soon afterward. I have wondered if it was rebuilt somewhere else.

1:29 - In 2016, the aquatics pools at Rio, looked to be built as temporary.
I’m convinced the construction companies are the real drivers behind the Cities that bid for the games. They are the only ones who come out ahead.
Agreed! Like so much else in this world right now, it’s just about enriching the select few insiders who stand to benefit

Pools are extremely expensive to run and maintain.
Except vancouver 2010 , they came out ahead, and were considered the best, and the IoC has asked them several times to repost a games
Definitely one of the good outcomes!

Why dont we build a permanent location for the games to be hosted?

Sounds like a great idea as long as it's your city.
Most of the stadia built for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa are under used now.

I have been to Athens Olympic park apart from the stadium it was a mess. So sad and a waste of cash.
Sad to see for sure … I was scrolling through Google maps and was amazed at the scope of it! I’m sure in person it’s even more striking!
Thank you. For this and other good reasons I've always hated the Olympics.
The argument is, "Should just three major cities be picked to host the Olympic games in rotation?"
Yes, but actually five summer, and five winter. This way, each city/country will know they'll be hosting the Olympics once every 20 years. My suggestions:
SUMMER
1. Los Angeles, USA

5. Athens, Greece
WINTER
1. Zurich, Switzerland
2. Berlin, Germany

Make more sense to have Beijing for summer, Nagano or Sapparo Japan for winter

Why does there need to be an Olympic village? Can’t the athletes stay at hotels or with host families?
Seems like that would make a lot of sense!
Why can't they just re-use these older sites?
Would definitely make a lot of sense!
Olympic’s need to rotate locations and use existing venues and the only thing would be to develop the Olympic village or set aside hotels and convention centers.

now i understand why the future la opympic is so spread out over the USA.
07 seconds. Wrong. The IOC doesn’t care in the least about abandoned facilities and the financial cost to taxpayers.
They moved the Rio pools to other sites.
Need to pick two places to host games permanently.
Actually the London athletes housing is now given free to the people invading Great Britain. At British taxpayers expense of course. The football stadium is also being supported by the British taxpayers so that the players and teams can make more profits because they don't have to support their own stadium anymore.
The Olympics is just another commercial event.. Nothing to do with the goal of amateur athletes from around the world competing.
Agreed… sad to see how far off course it has gone from the original intent
The Olympics should be held in 1 city only. This will mitigate cost and much better for everyone. It will remove corruption due to bidding too. LA is the best city to hold this event every 4 years. Salt Lake City can host the winter Olympics every 4 years too .
So they should just make one big Olympic venue in Grece and host it there every time.
That would actually be kinda cool, I’m onboard with that idea!
The Olympic execs would never go for it... No means of collecting their millions in bribe.
