Bro! You were a huge help! I was getting frustrated. I made it work for a 1987 Monte Carlo SS. Only thing I had to do was jump a wire from E to D coming from the OBD with USB and it worked! I have the D plug in and not the E. Thank you sir!!!
I spent four hours trying to figure out why Tunerpro wasn’t connecting to my car’s OBD-I port. Little did I know that I had to hit the double arrow to tell the systems to connect! 6:56 Thank you for this video bro!
Hey man, thanks for making this. I'm taking my first steps into ALDL diag and am looking forward to hooking up to my '89 Cadillac Brougham tomorrow to get some readings. 14 years I've owned this car and I'm about to meet my ECM for the first time. Lol.
Let me know how it goes.....I need to do the same for my 90 Brougham. I saw this website aldlcable.com/ that sales all kinds of equip. hardware/software, so I'm lost, and will have to get on the "Thirdgen.org" forum to see what their advice is since they all use the T.B.I. motors like I have....
Great intro and practical use video, especially for older cars. Best motivator I've had to get my truck running again, clear that check engine light that had been on for months, & see what al the software can do. Thanks for posting it.
Hi Dave, this is Ross up in Maine. This was a great video, easy to understand how to get started in tuner pro. I'm hoping you used tuner pro on your 93 diesel trans ECU for your 4T65E swaps. I'm in the process of adapting a Mercedes om606 diesel to a 4t65e HD. for a mid-engine package mounted to a aluminum Impala front subframe. I know I can wire up the solenoids to manually shift the gears and I have a pwm controller that seems to be working to control the line pressure. I'd much rather have it fully automatic if I can get it to work like you had in your swaps. This is great stuff! I noticed in the comments you have a website, could you share that with me please. Subscribed. Thanks a bunch, Ross Converse
The update speed on that car's data scream is quite good in my opinion. My 99.5 Jetta's computer uses the old architecture ECU that was introduced in 1997, and it can only manage 2-3 samples a second. Of course the new cars are *much* faster. The data coming over CAN on the '12 Passat is amazing. It has pressure sensors in the glow plugs so it can monitor peak cylinder pressure, the updates from those fields just wiz away.
+compu85 Interesting. The update rate on the ALDL8192 protocol is as high as 10 or 11 datasets per second. That was introduced in 1986 on the GM cars with the new "3 connector" ECM. When using this higher speed datastream feedback for real-time ECM re-tuning, it makes for a very smooth tuning job.
+davida1hiwaaynet I think that OBDII mode might actually be faster than the native VW protocols on the 99.5's ECM. The automatic trans computers for the VW made 4 speed are really bad, they normally only cough up 1 sample per second. The VW native system also groups the data sets into "Measuring blocks". Each block will have 4 data streams, so for example block 11 has things related to turbo control: RPM, Specified MAP, Actual MAP, and the duty cycle of the vacuum control solenoid for the turbo. You can have multiple blocks open at once, but if you get 4 samples / second with one block open it drops to 2 samples / second if you have 2 open.
+compu85 Yeah that is how it goes with the request/response protocols like CAN, OBDII, and MODBUS. The more you request the slower it goes. The ALDL8192 protocol is a true one-ended serial datastream where all parameters are always being sent out.
Can't believe you still have the rusty duke. But now I know the Gm OBD1 were smart, and can understand why Joe Jack Leg don't like new cars. I use ultra gage on my car to get real time data. Laptop for other cars. That beats the heck out of jumping the two pins.
A bit late, but was looking for this kind of video. Really good one and well explained and showed. I have a question though- the ALDL youre using to connect to the ecm with, can you also modify paramters with it or just diagnose? Thanks mate
Hi Tom. This ALDL interface is only for troubleshooting. These ECMs do not have any type of flash memory, or dynamically modifiable memory of any type. The only way that the parameters can be altered is by replacing the chip with an emulator; by removing the chip and placing it in a computer with a EPROM programmer. Nothing done through the ALDL connector an alter the parameters in one of these ECMs. The ECM hardware has no ability to change the program in the EPROM chip regardless of what sort of commands are sent through the ALDL port.
Hello. I am trying to locate the cable needed to connect to GM ALDL OBD1 and to the pc. EXTREME ALDL adaptor is recommended, but seems no longer avalilable. Thank you in advance.
Hi Jamal. I believe it works with MAX232-based cables. If your cable or Bluetooth device uses (or emulates) the MAX232 chip, it would probably work. The software registers for $35 if I remember but will work as a trial until registered. I paid about $80 for the cable.
David, I bought the Moates ALDU tool. I have a 1988 Buick LeSabre with the LN3 engine. I went to the TunerPro site and looked for the data definition for my model and engine but it is not available. Do you have any ideas on how I can find a way to use the Moates tool with my engine? My LeSabre keeps dying out while driving and while idling and I am trying to watch the live data to determine what is happening and making it die out like that.
hello i have a question for u i have a 1990 k5 blazer 5.7 had it rebuild the block was 30 over did alot of up grades on it put bigger cam in it and had some one to burn my chip and for some reason cant get any power i still have the swirl port heads on it and put a xe262h cam in there do u think that cam is to big with them heads i did evrything i was suppose to do up graded my fuel pump change regulator spring to 18 psi i got 700r trans took stock torque converter out put in 2000 to 2400 stall in there edelbrock intake headers 3' pipes all the way back 4.10 gears i have 35x12.5 r15 tires on it.it it idles good sounds good but no power and i hear a ping nosie in engine real low about 25 to 35 mph after 35 mph i dont hear it..tell me what you think..im getting really frustrated im thinking about eliminating that computer and putting a efi sniper on it .i didnt no i were going to have this mush trouble.
Did the coolant temps get resolved to go into closed loop? Seems like you need 195F for normal engine temps, unless your thermostat was stuck open/missing??????
The coolant temp doesn't have to be 195° to go into closed loop. I don't have a printout of the settings for this engine ECM, but similar models of this era only require 100° or so. There is a time delay after startup before closed loop is available. I sold this car to a fellow enthusiast who has continued repairs to it, but I don't know if he changed the thermostat.
@@davida1hiwaaynet Thanks for reply. I have a 1990 v6 Astro van that's running at a high idle and have finally come across the procedure for setting the idle speed as to be in concert with the IAC and the computer. I can't find a tachometer in the area where I live but I might be able to hook it up to a laptop like you did if I can figure it out. Thanks again.
Take heed of Dave's advice... the scan tool tells you where to start. You have to use your brain to figure out the real problem, don't always believe what the computer thinks the problem is.
Danny melko hm I didn’t intend to come off as critical of Dave. My comment meant the opposite... using every tool at your disposal to do a proper diagnosis is smart! Jumping to conclusions based on a trouble code is not.

Just recently was made aware of this software. I'm definitely going to use this to monitor my 94 Corvette.

Thanks for the video. I like tinkering around with this old, forgotten and underappreciated technology.

Thanks, I am glad you found it useful!
At last someone explains what the definitions are for. Thanxs!
Found this video while looking at how to use the TunerPro RT for my 90 chevy. Great video! My parents had an 85 Century, I loved that car!

I love that style of steering wheel on these buicks
TY...this is the first video I've found that goes through the steps for hooking up.

I bet it would work. You need to get the engine RPO code and then search to be sure it's available on the website.

True. There are details you miss with "only" knowing the DTC's from jumping the pins - without actual live data.
Great info David

davida1hiwaaynet thanks for the info. i have aldl droid with 1330 electronics scanner
Can you adjust AFR with this? I think a couple of knuckleheads set my HT4100 to run rich to pass CA smog and I'm 99% sure that's why it stalls.

I was wondering about your idle rpm it was 950 or so did that come down after the engine warmed up?
Yes, it would have idled down somewhat. Not sure what exactly the idle speed should be on this one.

What are the numbers associated under everything
How will you know that it is the original ECM, in our 86 Buick century 2.5L, And where is located. thx!
Cannot get to closed loop @153.00 degrees.
Will this work for a 1990 Chevy g20 van?
What does close loop open mean
I have a 1994 chevy ck 4.3 ,what file do I select.?
Can I use an OBD2 for my 1992 VP commodore?
will this work for a 87 cadillac brougham??

Was it hard to get going
The car? It needed fuel tank cleaned and pump replaced. the worst thing was the rats nest and chewed wiring under the hood.
I worked for a while at the plant that made iron dukes in Pontiac, MI. it was a pretty crappy engine, to be honest.
