Nice one Gary, well done mate. A fantastic Smiths song and spot on breaking it down so well for all the budding Johnny players wanting to know how to play it. Luckily I’ve known how to play this song for years having been incredibly lucky to live near near Johnny and met him and act got to go round to his old house, go in his home studio & huge live room that was attached to the back of the house in a huge conservatory style studio. And amazingly I actually got to jam with him various times and this was one of the beautiful songs we jammed together, so learnt it perfectly from the master himself, otherwise I’d probably still be sat here trying to work it out by myself 10yrs on from playing it with him. Believe me it was a truly amazing experience learning and getting to play with my only real guitar idol and the biggest influence on my guitar playing, style and songwriting.

You’re welcome Gary, believe me I know how lucky and fortunate I am. Someone I knew said to me he’d given Johnny my number as I worked for a large music/electronics distribution company so supplied all music shops, retailers, wholesalers etc. so I could get gear at very low prices, apparently Johnny wanted to buy some more microphones for his studio. I thought nothing of it until a few days later sat in my car, my mobile rang and didn’t recognise the number, I answered and a voice said hi Stephen, it’s Johnny Marr he was given my number and could I give him some advice on microphones. I could indeed help him but I found it laughable him asking myself for advice and could I possibly go round and see him. Obviously I obliged go round to his that very evening. Yes I was very keen but he was always my favourite guitarist. Getting to jam with him playing various of his guitars was a total dream I would never imagine would of ever happened. Luckily it did and got to play some of his songs and even better we jammed a few songs I’d written with my band which he said he really liked and with him playing on them instantly added everything and sounded brilliant and gave me a lot more ideas of how to make our songs better.
He’s a lovely normal down to earth guy who when I see him occasionally and walk past each other he stops, says Hi Hello and asks how I am. Which I don’t think many musicians of his stature would really do very often.
Take care Gary enjoyed watching your song lesson even though I didn’t need it but your breakdown of the song and how you explain to your audience in my opinion is great and one of the better tuitions I’ve seen. Cheers Steve

I do get a bit lost at 12 min 20 though, video seems to cut and move on? Fantastic though. Thank you for all your videos.

wow great job on this! been on a smiths kick lately, inspired by a seven hour pod cast by bandsplain about the smiths. Decided to try this song, no shade on anyone else, but your version rocks!! So close to how Johnny plays it, can't believe you put it all together in such an excellent teaching style. thank you!

greatest smiths song ....millions of chords. Johnny plays it in his interview with the lads at That Pedal Show on RUclips and you can see his hands perfectly.

So confusing, because you played the ending refrain in the beginning of the video! Like you did part 1 and part 3 and left out part two. So I'm thinking, this doesn't sound right. Because the second part you played in the beginning actually is the refrain at the end! Other than that great lesson.
