  • An audiovisual project on an exploration into science and science fiction.
When writing the music, I was inspired by science-fiction concepts, such as space travel and alien life (hence the name Andromeda - the name of our neighbouring galaxy), as well as the subjects of evolution, biology and animal life. I was also influenced by the soundtracks of eighties sci-fi films.
For the visual aspect of the project, I carefully selected footage that I felt best represented the science (fiction) concepts I wanted to convey. I compiled some clips I had captured on camera over the past few years into a short film. I looped a shot of an airborne aeroplane wing, adding various filters to emulate space travel for the intro section. The first part of the middle section makes use of a shot involving large blocks of stone. I was inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey’s monoliths - machines built by aliens to oversee humanity’s evolution. As evolution and alien life were both concepts which inspired the track, I felt these images would act as a suitable accompaniment to the themes of the music. The second part of the middle section deals with the concept of time and so I found a shot I had filmed in Berlin of the Weltzeituhr (world-time clock) to accompany this part of the music. The third part of the middle section was written as an exploration into life itself, hence the shots of children and sea creatures. The final part of the middle section continues this theme, yet instead focuses on the mysterious and less friendly beings that exist on our planet. For this part of the music, I have used the shot of a shark - a creature commonly thought of as dangerous and mysterious. I also felt the image of a human arm (minus its skin) complimented the unnerving chords and sounds used in this part of the music, whilst continuing the theme of biology. For the outro section, I re-used various shots from the intro section, albeit with different filters. Reversed shots of fireworks were used to emulate interstellar travel and the final shots were meant to represent the atomic structure of our universe, with the small lights acting as protons, neutrons and electrons. All clips were filmed by myself and all have filters added to emphasise the science-fiction nature of the music.
