  • January in Piemonte. The second week at our Italian Farmstead. We get a visit from Isis’ mother, who lives in Italy. We crack open an “ancient” bottle of wine. We show you the inside of some of our outbuildings. We do a few chores around the property. We explore the south-east edge of our land. And we say goodbye to the farmstead for a few months.

Congratulations on your Farmstead truly she is a Beauty. You understand she will take time and work to bring her back to life and you have wonderfully demonstrated the methodological approach of prioritizing those tasks. You have shown her that you care by lovingly taking the time to introduce yourself in a nuanced manner to preserve her integrity. Your farmstead, land, animals, plant life all feel your presence. The postive peaceful energy you have brought her will be reciprocated in kind.
Blessings for Bounty to both of You and to all of the Farmstead.

Hoi en welkom! zeker weten dat de oude gebouwen ouder zijn, maar hoe oud is lastig te zeggen. We vermoeden intussen minimaal gebouwd ca. 1850.

You did a Great job, many more videos to come, it is Lovely, Are you going to have Solar, or wind generator??? The view is Amazing, your property is spectacular, I once lived in a cabin for 7 1/2 years with no electricity or running water, inside the cabin, burn firewood, for heat, a Big garden for fresh food, it was really The Best Time of my Life, No modern day distractions, ( No radio, television, computer, or cell phone). I have to say it got me soo in Touch with my Spirituality, and my Creative Imagination

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  Год назад

Hi Lori! We are exploring both solar and wind energy - gas is going to be mostly a temporary solution. Since we have 8 hectares of forest it also makes sense to look into wood as a source of energy/heating. And yes, a slower paced life, close to nature, the seasons and the cycle of life gives so much meaning to our existence indeed.

Hi. Thanks for sharing your journey. I love the way you guide us through on paper and then show us the building. It helps a lot. I’m not an expert on tree pruning but I think you should trim the branches closer to the main branch. This will help the tree heal over better so I’ve heard.

We'll end up taking away the entire tree (we're bringing a chainsaw in the next video ;-) This tree is a European ash, they grow to 40 meters tall and that would cause so many problems in this spot.

I'm not sure if there's a difference between bottled wine and when it's in a barrel in terms of how well it keeps.

Do you ever do a video with an over view of the lands? And their purposes and functions? You clearly are adept at drawing and mapping out the buildings, and your method of showing the layout with the progressive drawing and video intertwined is by far the most logical and easy to understand I have ever seen in a video of this sort. Do you ever do anything like this with the land? Where you draw a map of the boundary, the boundaries of each subsection, and then use drone footage and walk through video to explain the land?

I am living vicariously through you, Martijn, and Not Useless Yet while I wait for my dual Italian citizenship to be recognized and figure out a way to be a "digital nomad" until I retire in 5-7 years. I read "Under the Tuscan Sun" twenty years ago and have dreamed of purchasing and renovating a long-abandoned but structurally sound property like yours, full of old furniture, tools, and memorabilia. My great-grandparents emigrated in 1903 from a hill town in Sicily, and my dream is to one day purchase a property there and split my time between there and the US.

For cutting small branches of the tree I suggest You to buy a "coltellaccio" (large knife, machete), instead of using the hand saw, it will be more efficient and fast, but You need to pay attention not to put hand or nails near it or it will cut it. Lucky find indeed! We don't take cutting down trees lightly ;-) but having an ash tree that can easily reach 40m grow about half a metre distance from a building... that can only cause problems. we'll plant something smaller in it's place, maybe a lilac tree or a fruit tree.

Есть такие минуты в жизни, когда становится всё, всё, всё ясным и понятным. У вас наступил такой период в жизни, где всё устроится и потечёт в режиме, который вы создадите сами себе, никого не подгоняя и не торопясь.

Good job! you guys. Maybe invest in a small tractor to help you move heavy items around the farm. Something like a weed whacker or weedeater, as we call it in the US, would be a good addition to help with grounds maintenance.

We surely will at some point, but in the meantime our neighbour who is a farmer is mowing the hay on our land :-) A win-win situation ;-)

There is a modern version of the bow saw for pruning, it’s called a reciprocating saw and you use a bow saw blade in it. Just easier. I’m sure you will be buying cordless tools, so pick your brand

Congrats on the surveyors' reports! Lots of worries less.
Following various other renovation projects on YT I would strongly urge you to give priority to the roofs, and then work your way down. Spring and summer are near, so perfect for roof work. But the wet autumn and winter will be upon you in no time. And you better be weathertight before then.
Repairing the roofs will be expensive, but delaying repairs will be exponentially more expensive in the end.
Also joined renovation of both 'Mom's cabin' and the main building will benefit all. Mother will be able to move in earlier, and she may like to join in the renovation.
You could see her enjoyment in the kitchen, and in the sun drinking wine.
BTW : the little chapel, isn't that what is customary for travellers or by-passers? The local pastore will know what to do with it. It may also need to be consecrated again.

Yes, absolutely! The roof on the currently habitable part of the house is in good condition (that part of the roof was redone in 2005). On the other buildings we plan on first doing local fixes, so as to close the holes and avoid further water damage, before redoing the roofs one by one. We won't be able to start that work until summer though, as we'll be only moving to Italy full-time in July.
