You've got a great mix of beautiful scenery, drone shots of the surroundings, "vlog" style to show what you are working on and you sitting down talking to give updates. I find it both relaxing and interesting to watch. I can't wait to see what this year holds for you :)

    First night in the house must have felt like a big milestone!
    The market looks like great potential for nice vintage decorations and such.
    The bathroom presure problem sound like a rusted/clogged up pipe.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 Год назад

      Yes. 1960s was still very much the era of galvanised pipes and those pipes tend to rust on the inside until barely any water gets through. On the other hand the greenish stains on the sink do look like copper combined with acidic water, which would be a bit unhealthy.

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  Год назад +1

      It did feel like a big milestone! And we'll definitely be picking up more treasures from the market over the coming months!
      We have very hard water, so that no doubt has caused clogging in the pipes. we think the pipes are copper rather than iron, but there might be buildup of corrosion.

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  Год назад

      We think the pipes are copper rather than galvanised iron. Copper is quite commonly used for water pipes in Belgium and The Netherlands as well (I guess in all of Europe). As our water is very hard I'd be surprised if it would be acidic. Our water comes from the municipal water supply so it does meet national standard criteria. I wonder if the green corrosion might have been caused by acidic cleaning products rather than acid in the water itself.

Nonetheless, I love your project and am excited to see what you'll do next.

    I was surprised that you had olives, even if small ones. I think that you are at the limits of plant hardiness for olives, zone 9. You are probably correct about the microclimate of the site helping them to survive.
    I have a garden in Zone 8 on the Olympic peninsula in Washington state but some winters we can get hit by very cold air coming down the Fraser River of British Columbia which wipes out some of the plants that I try from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America. Life is a risk but worthwhile trying.
    I have been successful with the hardiest eucalyptus from Tasmania. I love the eucalyptus oil scent mixing with the ocean air from Discovery Bay.
    My suggestion if you plan on creating an ornamental garden think about scents and prefumes from herbs and other plants, like lilacs. You can create a paradical ambrosia of scents that can enhance your life experience to a new level.
    Glad that you are setting in. It is a beautiful place there with some grand vistas.

      @@michaelroark2019 as we're moving over in summer we'll just have to make it work somehow! i'm not sure yet whether it would be best to keep them in a container until fall arrives, or to plant them out and water often.

    • @michaelroark2019
      @michaelroark2019 Год назад

      @@storiesfromthecascina You have a dilemma. Transplanting is a very stressful event for plants. I would recommend planting in a pot until the Fall because Italian summers are typically hot and dry. Cool wet misting conditions are best which is more possible in the Fall/ Winter. The crucial variable is how many roots you can obtain when you cut into the original plant for the offshoot.

      they've been in pots for about a month now and seem to have taken well to their new temporary home. i've also cut out the flower buds so that all the energy would go to the roots rather than flowers.

      In our videos you can sometimes see the Alps, with one very prominent pointy peak sticking out: the Monte Viso / Monviso mountain. Martijn lives relatively nearby that peak.

    Ik weet niet of jullie alles echt weg gooien maar soms is het handig om dingen bij de hand te houden. Ik zag dat er takken gezaagd werden maar die zijn juist erg bruikbaar,als bonestaak of als basis voor een vlechtwerk hek.Konden jullie lopende naar de markt of is dat net te ver weg van jullie huis?
    Ik weet niet veel van water af maar ik heb wel eens gehoord dat er een drukvat geplaatst moet worden , misschien een handigheidje om te weten.

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  Год назад

      wij gooien bijna niets weg :) de takken liggen in de grote loods te wachten op een toepassing. de markt is ca. 20 minuutjes rijden. in vogelvucht is het vlakbij maar kronkelweggetjes door de heuvels :)

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  Год назад

      een drukvat is een mogelijke route! maar voor we daar aan beginnen eerst maar even laten kijken of er nergens lekken zijn. want een lekkende leiding met een drukverhoger erop daar heb je weinig aan :-) we hebben nog een waterdrukverhoger uit een vorig project die het normaal nog prima doet, dus hopelijk komt die nog van pas hier :-)

      @@nevisscot7697 thanks for taking the time to reply! we were just going for a walk that day with the intention of taking some photos of wildflowers. we had no expectation of finding that olive grove. so we didn't bring our microphone with us. we are making a conscious choice to not live for vlogging, but rather to vlog our life (parts of it anyway).

    You have a enormous work to do, I think you need help!

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  Год назад

      We have neighbours who renovated a similar size property pretty much all by themselves over the past 16 years. So it's definitely possible. However, we'll be getting help for sure - if only because the regulations in Italy (as I'm sure you know) don't allow you to do everything by yourself and need to be done by professionals, but also because sometimes extra hands simply make the work more fun and much faster. In a way we are already being helped by our neighbour who mows the hay on our 8 hectares or fields.

    Actually it seems that in Piemonte there are about 300000 olive trees… Nothing comparable to others italian Regions but not irrelevant as we can imagine

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  Год назад

      they are definitely there, but we haven't seen any properties with an olive grove (and we've seen around 30). mostly as single trees here and there, not in larger groups. especially since we're at 555m above sea level this was unexpected!

    • @storiesfromthecascina
      @storiesfromthecascina  Год назад +1

      also, turns out that most of those 250-300k olive trees have been planted fairly recently (2003-2004) and that since then many of them have died due to frost. growing olive trees here is still in the experimental phase :)
      we're happy that the previous owners of our farm were among the pioneers 🥰

      i get that it can get annoying sometimes, but those adverts are the way that creators get compensated for all the time and effort they invest in making these videos. i happily watch the commercials on youtube channels that i love because i know i'm supporting the maker behind it.

    Sthill has a small hand held chainsaw ideal for chopping all those smaller branches,get yourself a tester for the power cords ,we don’t want anyone electrocuted .Keep your ash from the stove and use it where you are going to have your vegetable garden.please don’t pick spinning wheels up by the wheel use the bed or put your arm through the wheel not by the rim over time this breaks the joints in the wheel and helps buckle them.finally beautiful video nd good find on flowers and trees.

      we're saving the ashes but before using them in the garden we need to test our soil. it's our understanding that we have fairly alkalic soils and we want to be careful not to overdo it :)

    Why don’t you hang the bathroom mirror horizontally rather than vertically? As long as you can see your faces in it I think it might look better. Your home, your choice of course. 😉

    • @storiesfromthecascina

      the mirror currently only has a "hook" to hang it vertically. we might change it later still, we'll see :)
