#41 Discovering an ancient stone floor - Renovating an abandoned farm in rural Italy

- This week we continue organizing some of the chaos left behind by the previous inhabitants over the centuries. And discovering a beautiful stone floor in one of the outbuildings.
We're Isis & Bertus. In the summer of 2023 we moved into a neglected farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. The last inhabitants left some 10 years ago, but large parts of the property have been empty for over 20 years.
Thank you for joining us on our adventure!

I loved everything about this video. Isis your herb garden and delicious looking food. Bertus what you did with all the wood is amazing and must feel so good to have it organized and usable. Everything is so green and beautiful right now.
I really love watching you guys sort, organise, clean, recycle, repurpose, build, make and create 👍 awesome progress ❤
me too!!!! such a cool series
Me too! When I think of all the times my husband and I have thrown out and bought new during our renovations, I feel sick!
It fills me with awe that a building which was meant only for domestic animals was so amazingly constructed with care and attention to detail. Such beautiful masonry in such a beautiful country. Thank you for rescuing it.
People built for generations to come not for 30 years.
I love how you both keep all your building so cleaned up after your work, and take time to sort out the lumber and place it were it has its own space. The bread you make looks delicious and perfect ❤ I also seen the kitty on the window ledge how sweet. Thank you both for sharing your journey. Have a bless week and see you next week ❤ Love from the USA🇺🇸
The wood on the shelving is almost an Art instillation, esthetically pleasing to the eye ❤️
Things are coming along wonderfully with all your hard work.
Having multiple huge workshops and having to constantly run between them to fetch things is a problem I aim to have one day.
Thank you both, makes my Sunday nicer :o)
you're welcome wendy!
I've been watching you since the beginning. It takes much determination to do what you are succceding at. I admire your grit {pun intended!}. I look forward to each installment. i also looj forward to when you will be working on the main house!
Thank you so much! We are looking forward to that too!
Does Velutto still sleep in the little box you made for him? If he does might I suggest you open it up once a month and put in one of Bertus’ unwashed smelly work shirts he has worn after a day or even two days labour. He will then hide himself in the smell and get used to it. Then swap it out for a different shirt a month later and so on. Our cats love to hide in my husbands dirty work shirts when they fall on the floor. The monsters cannot smell them when they are masked by Dad’s smell. Also how about putting a camera in the wall of the box, something like a Blink or Ring camera from Amazon that will notify you whenever he goes in there on your phone. I loved his first meow video.
Hi guys, you have a lot of work to do! I'm Belgian too, bit I'm living in Italy since many years. In 2020 I moved to the countryside between Milan and the Lake of Como. Now I started with my own channel and Friday I published my first video.
Beautiful camera work! Good luck with your channel
@@storiesfromthecascina Thank you, and good luck for your work
I just love how you reuse things and then make everything beautiful - you two are amazing!
I Adore your work ethics. So much beauty. Thankyou.
You are so welcome!
Your mountains remind me sharply of our own mountains in Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. I love watching your plans coming together, but without any apparent hurry or anxiety. Very pleasant to watch - so glad I found your channel!
That boy will have a room of his own soon enough. Looks like he was window shopping…😅. Or at least checking to see what mamma was making for supper.
The progress is fantastic, the little cottage room really is just sweet. See you next week guys….❤
Love your episodes. Love your progress.
Watching these videos are as amazing as you two!!! Can’t wait to see what’s next!! Thank you for bringing that old place back to life!!!
Ciao Isis and Bertus, the backbreaking job you did to get the workshop done has paid off it looks Bellissimo, I have not had Elderflower, but would love to try it. Your "pollaio" is such a beautiful building, I am so happy you are restoring it. The herb garden is so nice to have, the bread looked delicious. The drone shots are so beautiful. Well done, love from N.Y.
Elderflower cordial/syrup is the flavour of my childhood summers. It makes a lovely lemonade with sparkling water or a delicious topping on ice-cream or pancakes. If elderflower grows where you live I totally recommend making yourself some. For 1 bottle you need about 10 flower screens, a lemon and about half a kilo of sugar. Otherwise maybe you can order some online?
@@storiesfromthecascina thanks for the tip, I will certainly let you know how I make out.
Good luck!
I've seen others using a leaf blower to get worked in dirt out...may save time and certainly saves your back and arm muscles!
Another lovely vid. Fabulous progress. Bertus, was that a drive train you took out of the that little room? Looked short enough to be for a Fiat Cinquecento. 🥂
It might have been! The little space was definitely used as a garage at some point (we also found motor oil and an old luggage roof rack that looks like it might have been from a fiat panda).
I’m so thrilled to follow what you do every video, if I had the chance, I would do exactly what you are doing. You start a project and finish it, your commitment to tidiness is amazing. And, you seem to be enjoying it even though I can see just how hard you work.
I wish you every success to complete your dream, I hope you keep us updated on your progress, however long it takes.
Love your cooking segments too.
Regards, Eleanor from Brisbane Australia.
The scenery is gorgeous and I love your podcast best of all. It’s fascinating to watch what you are building and making. How about some recipes. Cordial and bread. And your herb/flower beds are beautiful. Envious but so happy for you. 🇨🇦
I love to see you reusing all the found materials. That's great 😍😍😍
Thank you! Cheers!
The three tonnes of wood two weeks ago may now be near 4 tonnes that you have already kept, well sized and ready to be reused!
Excellent husbandry of resources!!
See you next week!
It is so incredibly enjoyable to have the normal sounds of your working and the nature rather than sped up montages to music. The slower pace is a taste of mindful living. Thank you!
Revealing that ancient floor was very cool to watch… you guys are tireless 😅
So awesome to see Velluto eat from your hand! He is so handsome. And, yes, I am the "cat lady"😂 I love the little barn, it has so much potential. Ohhhh....that bread!👍 I could just taste it.
Enjoy watching your progress. Velluto is taking his time, poor baby! Look forward to next week!
Repairing old windows and doors is your speciality. They all turn out great.
Have spent a few hours pulling nails from old wood, requires some major grip strength.
Hi Isis & Bertus🇧🇪🇳🇱🇮🇹, I think I`m ajoure with catching up with the latest episodes🤔, Well you guys did make for sure great progress👍🏻, the polaio servet some nice suprices such as the complete stone flore some gave a ancient look from the past centuries, from that building for sure a lot to clean out from all those excrements 😓from div animals, Great you removed that old rotten sealing and get a better view of the rot in te sealingplanks 💪🏻hope fully the beams are safe🤔. The new work shop in the old barn gets a nice form. You did also sorted out all that reuseble wood planks short parts small beams well stored in they div dimensions.😉well done.Greetings.Hubertus🇳🇱🇳🇴🙏🏻🍀☮🇮🇹
Hello, from Australia
Like I said last first time I saw your RUclips channel. I really like the old house. 😊
I enjoy your channel very much! Suggestion.... related to raised garden beds for the future...your have a wood planks...build raised beds, face them east-west, 4 feet x 8 feet using scrap with posts at the corners, place them.... perhaps between road and the hen house as it creates a wind break and is south facing, if necessary line bottom of beds with wire mesh to prevent rodents, then... cardboard, much of the content of the wire compost bins you currently have, grass clipping, rotting wood, logs, sticks, straw, sand, dirt.... what ever you have available...and repeat layers as it rots down and add more layers....lasagna gardening, no till, no dig, the materials you are composting becomes the garden soil....if you build the boxes now and start filling them you will be able to plant this fall...asparagus , kale, chard etc. Goggle lasagna gardening...too much back breaking labor to garden in the ground of such rocky soil...intensive raised bed gardening is the answer...huw Richards on you tube is an excellent resource...happy gardening...we have used this lasagna method for 50 years. :). Best wishes!
Elderflower cordial is sciroppo di sambuco. I love it. It’s so healthy and great for digestion.
Thank you for inspiring with both how you really seem to enjoy the pace and take the time to reuse so many things others would discard, and also your storytelling with very nice shots and contextual words when needed. ❤
You are so welcome!
I agree with you, it is pretty. I love the character of that little building, it has loads of potential.👍
I just lucked onto your site a day ago and I must say I am glad I did. I've been trying to get through the older ones as well as more recent ones. There great. All of them. One comment, I love the quality and clarity of the videos, tack sharp. Also the tonality of the color, reminds me of Agfa color film. It's fun to hear the odd Dutch language snippets which I still understand even though my family left more than seven decade s ago. Thanks for the wonderful videos and look for many more to come.
You are right it is pretty…some people would pay lots of money to to have that copied in their home…love your videos with my Sunday… morning coffee …keep up the great work 😊
What do you do with all the scrap nails? Will the wood you put on the shelves be for building in the future?
The wood on the shelves is the wood that's still good enough to use for building/repairing things, everything else we cut up for fire wood for next winter. The scrap nails will go to the recycling centre. We collect a bucket full and then bring it away :-)
Fotografisch mooi opgeruimd metalen rek voor de laatste restjes hout. Dank weer voor de mooie aflevering!
Put your rusty nails and screws in with hydraenga flowers and it makes them more blue❤
I truly enjoy your videos, and envy your piece of the rural Italian countryside, I would love to have an old farm someday with beautiful stone buildings. Keep those video coming! I also enjoy seeing you two working side by side, something I also enjoy doing with my wife.
Follow your dreams! We don't regret anything - even if it's not always easy. Thank you for watching and commenting ❤️
One of the great things about how you are using the old pipes is that you can continue to use it in future without having to buy other fittings. 👍
You are truly my Sunday meditation. Heartfelt gratitude and blessings to you both.
Thank you Charlene! Same to you!
Not that is one great old wood storage unit! It's good that you are keeping it because as well as having wood when you need it without needing to buy it. These old pieces could be used in the future for a lot of uses!
I would have thought if you were looking to be there into the future the barn built to house animals would be necessary when it snows
So wonderful to see the work and progress happening (while I sip my coffee Sunday morning). I'm quite envious of your endeavors and wondering how I could do the same. Can't wait to watch your next chapters.
You can do it! We don't regret one second that we followed out dreams. A few years ago we were also still wondering how we could make this happen, but as soon as you start putting one foot in front of the other things start falling into place. We talk a little bit about our process in episode 7 or 8 I think it was.
So clever to convert the old pipes into storage racks! And they are sturdier than almost anything you could buy!
You've probably answered this question already, but I wonder how you are disposing of all the trash and unusable building materials . It's a marvelous process to watch you both work so hard to restore the compound, and your farm is full of charm!
Záběry přírody jsou dechberoucí.
The henhouse looks fabulous. Just in case you’d like to know, the word trough only has the one h at the end otherwise it means to look through something (and similar applications). Might hv been a typo but English is a strange tongue sometimes. There seem to be two or three accepted pronunciations for trough: trow (in Australia mainly) and variations on troff. Also cute to say ‘paint of coat’ but it’s the reverse 😊. I don’t mean to be picky, I just thought you might like to know. Keep up the great work. Love watching your vids.
thank you, jumbling words is something i do in any language even in dutch 🤣
I think I said it before, but who cares? I love your artistic, highly aesthetic videos and the peace they promote. Thank you so much and keep it up, please!
thank you! glad you're enjoying the videos and our projejct ❤️
That stone floor is a beautiful find! So glad that in cleaning out you are also discovering the wonderful secrets your buildings hold. And the progress with Velluto is also great to see. Thank you, as always, for sharing your story.
It really is! It was such a nice suprise find
Definetelly a way of life as renovations can go on forever and yet i would do nothing else inside my 450 square metres at Copacabana/BR potential seems endless!!! Surelly its not for everyone! Filming it majes it all the more especial! Congrats and "buon prosseguimento! "
Grazie mille Isabel!
hello! Could you add the subtitles in Spanish? Congratulations on the work, it shows that it was done with a lot of love.🎉🎉
ola carmela! if you read this message: could you tell us what's not working with the spanish subtitles for you? you can select you language in the video auto translate settings by clicking on the cogwheel. on our end it is working and we can select spanish (and many other languages).
Another beautifully shot video, you truly live in a most beautiful part of the world. You have certainly shifted a lot of building materials, both reusable and well past its best. It’s quite amazing the skill that was used to build buildings that were only to be used to house animals. They were certainly built to last! ❤
Would you share your bread recipe ? Looked so good!
Almost 60k subscribers🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I had a house with four floors, a half duplex, with a garage, nothing was ever where I was, and often wasn’t where I remembered.
yep, that's what our life feels like too :-P so looking forward to having just the one workshop again soon.
That old muck, straw and poo would be great for the garden. Looking on the positive side that is. Guess you added it to your compost piles. Love those by the way. Great idea with the wire as the containers. Also love your bread. It has been years since I used to bake my own. Great to see "Smokey" as I think of the cat, having a favourite safe spot to relax near you and nervously eating from your hand. Love your neatness. You have so much barn space. Best wishes.
Seems like the rain has just been unrelenting this spring. Is the amount typical or much above normal. I admire your persistence in working no matter what the weather!!
our area has been having mostly really strange weather the last few years, so it's hard to say what is normal 😅 i would say that this spring has been wetter than usual, but the two springs before that have been unusually dry (before this winter there has been a drought of about 18 months).
Lovely video !
Following your determination and hard work has become my choice of relaxation When I actually have some spare time.
Looking good. Love seeing the drone shots. Enjoy listening to the birds 🐦 singing their tunes that they are given by God to sing.
I know subscribers have mixed feelings about this however .... I feel like it might be a good idea to have an Amazon wish list for a few things...
I keep thinking 'shop vac'.
♥️🇨🇦
Hi Maria! A shop vac is definitely on our wishlist and we've actually looked into setting up an amazon wishlist a while ago, but the complexity is that we have to set it up with amazon Italy because otherwise you run into products not being able to be shipped here, but amazon Italy only has an Italian language version, which makes it difficult for many of our subscribers. Or we're missing something, but that's how far we got with it :-P
@@storiesfromthecascina still think worth trying Isis.
Many ways to get around the language thing now with google translate etc
♥️🇨🇦
Maria
I enjoy your videos so much.
Thank you for sharing 💐💐💐
When you started pulling the pipe out I thought, it would make a nice sturdy scaffolding! Great & handy to have for roof & gutter work also for painting the upper story! Then when you started to build, I thought, he is building a scaffold! Looks Great as is! BUT if you should find more of that heavy duty pipe... That pipe AND scaffolding are expensive! But I do have many more ideas, trellises, fence posts, art builds, on & on😅❤!!!
we inherited scaffolding from the previous owners and also have a 3m or so high scaffold ourselves, so we're good in the scaffolding department for now!
It is getting much more organised .⭐️⭐️👋👋
yes, bit by bit, definitely! :-)
Beautiful old wooden work bench in your former workshop. I hope you will preserve that too. It is so good to see you renovating the old things, not throwing them out.
If it's old, beautiful, and in decent enough condition to make it worthwhile to fix it, we're keeping it :-)
you are so meticulous in your work, I was wondering why didn't you brush off that wood you stored so thoughtful ?
We still want to, but that's another job. So we put the dirtiest ones on the lowest bars, so their dirt can't fall on the other pieces, and will do the brushing (& scraping...) later.
Have you ever thought about having your own chickens?
certainly :)
Fantastic work.
Bertus is the Grand Master of repurpose! I love to watch his creations!
Marvellous stone floor. I hope you didn't forget to sweep the walls too.
Like I said, you should definitely open up that old window.
But best of all was the view of those three loafs. Totally Top Chef.
Good to hear you enjoyed the baking! There might be a bit more of that coming as I've started to bake bread every week. :-)
And yes, the walls have been swept too! That was much needed indeed :-)
Wonderful documentation of the hard work you are both doing. Beautiful scrap wood setup. Gorgeous bread. Thank you. CH
it feels like "heart" work most of the time 😉❤️
The herbal borders are so lovely, fits the house perfectly. 😍
Love the thunder! Love the stuff just flying down from the ceiling...dust everywhere!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful videos, and congratulations on your progress with Veluto!
🐾🐈⬛🩷
Thank you! 😊🐈⬛
I need to take a lesson from you both in organizing my garage 😂
lol 😅 i'm pretty sure ours will get messy again sooner or later. and then when it gets out of hand to the point that it's unworkable, we'll tidy it up again.
This is so beautiful, clean and so very satisfying to watch! I wish I had a place like that👏👏Can’t wait for the next episode😊😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
I see all that old lumber and all I can think of is how it would look like after running through my planer.
we see all that old lumber and think "oh how we wish we had a planer" 😅❤️
@@storiesfromthecascina 🤣
As you clear out each building, we really begin to see how the bones of these buildings are solid and beautiful. I so enjoy watching you tidy and organize your each new room. Terrific job, folks!
Glad you enjoy it!
Dear Isis, your little garden front the house is very very beautifull!
BEST
Complimenti! Siete eccezionali 🎉🎉🎉
I love your gardening, so beautiful flowers and herbs to see
🌟👍👏🍀💐
There is so much going on at your place, you work hard, but the results can be seen every time it gets cleaner and cleaner, everything finds its place. The bookcase, that's excellent use of materials, bravo. Isis, Veluto is eating out of your hand, that's huge progress, I'm very happy for him, and how adorable he looked through the kitchen window. The views from the drone are beautiful, you live in a wonderful area. My warmest greetings to you and see you next week.
Thank you Donata! Wishing you a lovely week as well! We are certainly working all over the place now but we do hope that once the clearing out phase is done we can focus more on specific zones/rooms/buildings at a time. :-)
@@storiesfromthecascina You will do everything in your own time, you are the one who knows how to plan the work and it works out perfectly. Warm regards👋☺
Have you considered catnip for a corner of your herb garden? 😊🐈⬛
Always satisfying viewing. ✨
You guys are awesome 😊😊😊
you too ❤️✨️
Progress! Nice stone floor. Will you keep it?!
Before we knew this floor was here, our plan was to raise the floor by 30 or so cms (to make it level with the floors of the rooms next to it - with the added benefit of being able to easily add ventilation to the floor), but now we're not so sure. IF we take it apart for the above reasons, we will put it back in place. It's just too beautiful to replace with something else.
@@storiesfromthecascina Right. That'll look amazing!! So exciting!!! I'd love to be taking on a long-term project like this if I had the partner to do it with. I know it's super hard work but oh so fun! Your video and editing skills are fantastic. Did one of you go to school or take courses to learn. I'm an artist and am doing more social media and videos in the past year and might do some simple demos and shorts to attract 'traffic'. Any suggestions for on-line courses? If you haven't, then I'm super impressed! So relaxing to watch and I love how you do close-ups of the flora and name them! Great idea! Cheers!
Hi there! we didn't follow any training for filming and making videos. Isis is a professional (but self-taught) photographer so she knows about light and camera settings but video was completely new for us when we started this channel. There are many videos on youtube that help you getting to know the editing software (we personlly use davinci resolve) and for the artistic side of things you just have to be willing to not doe everything perfect from the beginning and learn as you go - by improving the things you're not super happy about in your videos and by studying and analizing videos from other makers. You can do it!
@@storiesfromthecascina Wow! You two are an amazing team and your videos are beautiful to watch. Thanks for the response I really appreciate it!
Build raised beds at least 2 feet tall...at least :)
Isis & Bertus sono orgoglioso che siete nel mio Paese, grazie e ciao!
Caro Alberto, è un onore essere accolto qui!
Thank you 🪴
I sure enjoy your videos! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Have you seen the cat lately?
Yes! He's in the video ;-)
@@storiesfromthecascina I will look again. I missed him.
💪💪💪👏👏👏👏
