#22 Finding a textile hoard, painting more doors, clearing the patio - Renovating in Italy

- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- In the summer of 2023 we moved into a dilapidated farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. The last inhabitants left 5 years ago, but large parts of the property had been empty for over 20 years.
This week we discover a textile and shoe hoard on our attic, continue painting all the iron doors on the property, and finish clearing the patio on the north-side of the house.
Thank you for joining us on our renovation adventure.

When my mother was a little girl in Italy, pre WWII, she would venture out into the wooded areas to find some moss to use for their creche at Christmas time. Your moss scene caused me to remember that story. She has dementia now. I will ask about this memory of hers, which is now in my care, to see if it is still in there somewhere.
@Reet64 it's still done here in the south
Love you using protection for lungs! The cobble was really nice find. I was hoping you would find treasure especially where the stone was missing.😛
Thank you for sharing this beautiful personal story with us
I'm really enjoying seeing your progress and I love the way you include shots of the scenery. No wonder you chose this place.
If you choose to include even more shots of the views from your property, I will be delighted. I'm starting to treat your videos the way I treat ones from Martijn Doolaard. I watch the first time to see what's new and how things are progressing, then I watch again just to see the view and the changes that the seasons bring.
And thank you very much for the history. That was a bonus.
Thank you so much! It is such a joy knowing that you are watching our videos for both the renovation progress and the magic of the seasons
I subscribe to several channels and yours has quickly become one of my favorites. All is calm and stunningly beautiful. The camera work of the scenery around you, including the clouds and fog, are so lovely. The completion of simple chores, quietly performed, are peaceful.
I look forward to your videos ever week. That sage green was a superb choice. It does lift the whole building. Thank you.
Glad you like them! Thanks for following our adventure
Bertie’s, I love how you pointed out how the mind can undermine what we truly have accomplished no matter how seemingly small the task is. And the cello music was a perfect fit. Thank you both for another beautiful video.
Your channel fast becoming one of my top tube channels. Love the slow movement of clearing around the buildings and yards - great job. Good result at the back of the house !
Thank you Sonia! That means a lot to us
Love the colour of the doors, well done so far, you are creating a really lovely place with the magical landscape around you.
Loved the respect you showed for the old textiles. You handled the tweed cap like it came from a collection at the V&A.
Also love that you compost EVERYTHING!!! You both provide inspiration for all of us indoors and out. Well done you(both)!🌲🐞🌻
This find totally reminded me of my days as a visiting scholar at the V&A :-P
Oh my you lucky, lucky girl to have had that amazing time with those collections. Died and gone to heaven!!! Well, that and touring English gardens!@@storiesfromthecascina
The aerial images and the surrounding nature are magnificent... finding old things from people from the past is so strange and makes you reflect on the life of the past... you are doing incredible work with passion, congratulations 😊👏👍❤
Another lovely episode in your unfolding stories. Fascinating finds, social and textile history (wonderful to have old clothing suitable to compost!), a green lizard, green doors and green moss being carefully lifted (I’m curious as to your intended use for it) and above it swirling fog, tiny snowflakes illuminated by a torchlight and Berthus and Isis’s considered commentary.
Thank you both from Australia.
i was thinking of making a wreath with part of the moss but might not get round to that, otherwise we'll place it on a few spots of bare earth where it will hopefully continue to grow :)
Wow, great opening sequence, those logs are really percussive and it was really atmospheric.
Very dramatic!
I love your videos and I'm quite jealous of your views😍
AH! Who could ask for more....archeology and costume history! Your efforts and care are most appreciated.
Wat een fenomenale locatie hebben jullie gevonden!!! Schitterend in beeld gebracht, complimenten! Mooi om te zien hoe jullie het aanpakken, met respect voor de natuur en de cascina zelf. Leuk om jullie te volgen, veel succes!!
I love watching you dig through the things left behind. I still have an old serving spoon that I found left behind in an apartment 40 years ago, and it was "old" then. Every time I use it, I think of where I found it.
what dedication! Thank you for letting us join your journey...and should you have enough of Bertus, we'll take him anytime😎
I am wondering with your compost bins if you need to wrap them with something to help them retain some heat to help with the decomposing. Is there any old tarps or plastic sheeting around that you could use. Our composts in the winter kind of go dormant due to the cold.
Wrapping them would be a good idea but we haven't really found anything around the farm we could use for that. When I was a kid we never did anything in our compost heap in winter either, but it would always just get going again in spring, so I'm kind of counting on that :-)
The walls are of beautiful stone, but the floor hid many objects not visible at first glance. You are constantly working and it is visible.
You have made so many changes. It looks so good. The new color of the doors fits very well with the rustic walls of the building.
You're doing a great job. It's looking so much cleaner and lived in already. So relaxing to watch!
Thanks so much! 😊
I love finding the history of the place by what you uncover over your restoration.👍
I love❤ your videos! I feel so relaxed and amazed with such beauty of the place where you now live. Looking forward for next weeks video ! Feliz Navidad y Año Nuevo !!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you Silvia! Happy holidays to you too

Love how this labor of love is progressing! You now have a nice little patio, perhaps you can show the view from it? You both did a lot of heavy lifting this episode, who needs a gym when you have a farmhouse to renovate 😊😊😊
It doesn't really have a view currently! It looks out on the big warehouse (which we will ultimately make smaller to open up the view of the Alps and turn into something beautiful).
Buildings seem to appreciate the effort we make to repair and tidy them up. They begin to have pride in what they once were and will become.
Oh Paulette, I love how you wrote that. So beautiful. And so true!
Bravo! Once again. Thank you for painting those metal doors as they are perfect and I agree that they bring back "life" into the old farmhouse. As for the patio--OMGoodness it could be a great place for a table and a couple of chairs. Throw a couple of pots of colorful flowers and it could be heaven. Not sure the sunlight situation but you are making a lovely home here. And before I leave...the property is stunning.
it's a very shaded corner that only gets about an hour or two of evening sun. that makes it a perfect place for sitting in the hottest days of sunmer, but less ideal for (most) flowers.
We got 10cm of snow last night, came in from shovelling to watch you two shovel 😂
I didn't find anything neat though. I enjoyed the shoe and textile treasures, love finding history during renovations!
I've kept some items and made a mini museum type display in each of the projects I've worked on.
Not sure if that's up your alley, but you certainly have lots of space to choose from to dedicate to a history section.
Something your guests might enjoy too!
Everything's looking so good already, can't wait to see more!!
We've just had our first dusting of snow today! But it doesn't look like it will stay for long. The ground is still too warm. We'll definitely keep some items and frame them or display them!
Hello guys! I'm Luli from Argentina and I found your RUclips channel by chance, but I became an ABSOLUTE FAN! I love the way you film, your aesthetic, your crafts, and most of all how you embrace the little things and live slow! I literally binge watched all the episodes and I came up with an idea! Since you can't make another cottage out of the chapel due to space, I thought it could be a great place to put all the things you found throughout the house! Like the "Cascina Museum"!! Chapel Cascina Museum. You could write where you found it, your reconstruction of where it comes from, a little description of the use of the element back then.If I were a guest in your property in the future, I would love to see that!
Nice. Clearing the stage for the next act, as it were. Next job will present itself. Show goes on.
I would like to see the bricked up doors and windows opened again.
Ooooh yes us too! Can't wait to start opening those back up :-)
As if people leave part of their soul, or existence in the house. It may also be some rural superstition,
like a straw shoe hidden in a bread oven to keep witches or bad spirits away in rural Devon. Nice photography too.
Yes, textiles are easily permeated with soul, I feel. Also with doormouse poo and urine though :-P
Lovely, you do a great job with these vlogs. I made your cinnamon apple slices with yoghurt for our breakfast yesterday, just as yummy as they looked in your previous videos 😋🍎
Glad to hear you enjoyed your cinnamon apple breakfast
Isis, I loved what you said about the textiles, feel free to include that sort of thing more if you feel so inclined.
I definitely will when new subjects present themselves :-)
When I saw you unearth all the shoes it made me think of a dog we had when I was a child. He would steal our shoes and had quite a collection. We would of course steal the ones we wanted back but the old ones we let him keep after awhile he had quite a hoard.
Glad to hear this episode brought back happy childhood memories Cheryl!
J’adore l’histoire du vêtement et de la mode ! Nicole Rudolph adorerait aussi cet épisode !
Love the respect and love with which you both discover the history of your home. What can you tell us about the people who built and/or lived there?
It is amazing that you can in December, here in NZ it has to be 12 degrees Celsius or higher to be able to paint.
A had read that shoes and textiles are hidden in walls and crevices of the house ususally at doorways and other entry places to ward off evil spirits. That might be the reason you found so many buried in the stairs.
My favourite kind of vlog you get things "done" in an extremely and what looks like effortlessly way!! Almost meditive 🙏 👏
Yay! Thank you!
Nice music & picturesque photo of the snow covered property. Your newly painted doors look fabulous. Love the wood stacks. I'm enjoying following your progress. 🌷
Thank you for following along Marie!
That sage green is a wonderful addition, and I'm so glad you saved the moss!
What a difference, looks totally different.👍
Love the detective work on the textile discovery!
Good work, Bertus! Steady and consistent work will get you there. And the journey - what a journey!
Absolutely!
Although I'm not archeologist, but art historian instead. I looove the find of so many shoes and textiles, with repairs on the inside. Because life might have bee cruel to the people, living far away from shops and luxurities by then.
Old fabrics with repairs are my favourite! There's so much stories to imagine in the patches :-)
Bravo! Bravo! I'm a neat-freak so your clearing up that stairwell makes my heart sing. Once cleaned up and the occasional bit of cleaning and it is a job well done. I never ceased to be amazed at what people accumulate and just leave trash about when watching these renovation shows from Italy, France and Sweden.
There's often a lot to clean up with old properties like these. It sometimes overwhelmes us a little too, but it's absolutely satisfying to do this work. :-)
Amazing pictures!
Love seeing that old Italian cap! So interesting!
Seeing hand stitching on those pieces of fabric must have been exciting! I wonder who sat and sewed them, were they sewn on site or bought from a tailor in a nearby village?
Thank you for another great video, I really enjoyed it. Did any more shoes match or was it just one pair and lots of odd ones? That’s the great thing with old properties - you don’t know what you might find :)
There were a few pairs of shoes and a few singles :-)
You still need to wear a mask in that environment. That old debris is full of you don't what. Protect yourself.
👓
The gauze might have been cheesecloth.
Love the fog and celli!
Definitely Rembrandt-like❤❤
حياتكم رائعة 😍🥰 تقبل تحياتي من المملكة العربية السعودية 🇸🇦❤️
I’m happy to see you finally wearing a mask!
this mask has been making appearances since, I think, episode 8? we've used it quite a bit, especially in areas with poor ventilation :-)
Another beautiful vlog. Great drone footage above the fog. Which drone are you filming with. Thank you!
Thanks! Bertus flies a DJI Mavic Air 2S to capture those gorgeous shots.
A poco a poco 🌱
I so love your property; it is such a tranquil spot on the earth. I am always surprised by the different hidey holes, storage rooms, attics, and other as yet unused spaces you have. What a life project!
Also, that sage green paint is gorgeous!
Nice
Do you know already how many people lived here in the 50ths and 60ths? Might have been several families.
As far as we know two nuclear families + seasonal workers.
Technical historic textile commentary...followed by rat shit lol.
Haha yes, it all smells of rat/doormouse pee too 😂
Looks like a a hand forged hinge at 3:37.
lots of those around at the cascina :-)
I absolutely LOVED the textile lesson. Thank you for sharing that
Glad you liked it Arleen!
Really cool shoes. I’d be fascinated too. 😊
Your finds are more likely hidden evidence of something much more sinister.
😉
You could use the lowe selling rooms for solar batteries.
👍😁✌
I sure enjoy your videos! Any ideas why there was a pile of dirt by the outdoor stairs and patio.
The pile of "dirt" on the patio was sand, covered under roof tiles, that we suspect was there to make cement/concrete and/or lime plaster. There are parts of the house that they started plastering but never finished. We've kept it either to make cement/lime-plaster or to break up the pretty heavy clay soil when we start a vegetable garden in the future. We'll definitely find a good use for it :-)
BEST
💪💪👋
Mystery staircase scene was cool!
I like the sage green 👍
Great video!
💕
Serenity❤🙏
Thank you for shearing your interesting journey with your property🙏🏻🍀
Thanks for watching!
🥰🥰🥰👋👋👋
♥️😊🇧🇪
nice wood stove
It sure is!
Love the old shoes and textiles, so interesting. I would be pleased if you show us all you little find ❤
