Finally broke down and bought the A7CR. Have to confess I love the massive 61mp sensor. This is the digital mirrorless camera I always wanted. All were great but with the advent of the A7R5, everything changed. The image quality is something else with this camera. Even bests my A7R3, though I am never going to sell that camera. I thought I wanted the A74, bought it and eventually sold it, it wasn't what I really wanted. This CR just blows it away.
I’ve owned the a7iv for about two years. In that time I have tried the FX-3, zve-10, zv-1, and the FX-30. I just got the a7cii last week and think this will be my travel camera. Going to use the 24-105 and eventually get the 20mm 1.8. Even contemplating selling the a7iv if the a7cii does everything I need.
Bought the A74 and sold it. Got the A7CR and am WOW happy. Beautiful camera body. Either the II or R are great and perfect for hitting the streets or headed to vacation or doing professional work. The A7C was about 70 percent there, the A7CR/II are 100 percent there. Fit a Sony 20-70 f4 lens on and you have an incredible system.
@@bondgabebond4907 I think I’ll be selling my a7iv after February. I committed to shooting an event and need both bodies. After that it goes and I just ordered the DJI Pocket 3 for a small setup when I don’t want to use the a7cii.
This little camera is a BEAST of a camera. It has me ready to sell my A7IV to get a second one and forget the dual card since I don’t really shoot professionally. Pair it with the 35mm F2.8 Zeiss lens and it’s walk around perfection.
I actually did just that, I sold my A7 IV and got a A7C ii. I always felt the A7IV was just a touch too big for street photography and I do not miss the joystick or second slot personally. You can get a nice base option to give you extra grip below the camera and mount it, so more versatile for me.
So I purchased the a7cii and talked myself into returning it for the a7iv because I talked myself into thinking I needed two card slots even though I'm not doing weddings. Then... I realized the weight and portability was more important to me and went back to it. Oddly I think it actually does better at auto white balance also. So the a7cii makes me want to shoot where as the IV made me feel like I had to get a perfect shot. In the end I actually end up with more photos I like because I carry it more often.
Ah!!! I loved using the 28-60mm on my new a7cii! I needed a totally inconspicuous lens for my son’s graduation at Ft Knox (no long lenses for obvious reasons lol). It worked perfectly for wide shots and portraits and was so light weight. I had so much fun with this camera/lens combo!
@@PMRTVthank you for this video as well- I’m always interested in the lenses that other photographers pair with their favorite camera bodies- there is something really special about this a7cii. Thank you Patrick! It sure does seem to be an impressive little camera! I was hoping to see images using the lenses you recommended. It seems most of the images were taken with the 35 and 50 f1.4 GM lenses and a tele zoom. Not a pro myself so I do have to resist temptation of want vs. need! What I really would like is a camera with the fully articulating screen like the A7rV. I just can't justify the A7rV's price.
Great review Patrick! I also am using the 40mm 2.5, 20-70 f4 and 16-35 f4 pz for anything that doesn't require a fast f-stop or long focal length. These lenses are perfect for travel.
Thank you again for the video. just took delivery of my A7C II. Used to own an A7IV so somewhat familiar with sensor. Maybe foolishly I have the A7CR and the A7C II now as my travel cameras (Neve like to travel with only one body). Really wanted something good for low light. Can we get a 28mm G lens to go with the 40mm?
I was hesitating between the a7cii and Nikon Zf but after handling them both at a recent salon of photography I will probably go with the a7cii. I have the Sigma contemporary 24/2 and 65/2 already. I would add the 40/2.5 later.
If they had at least added a micro sd card like Nikon did with the Zf it might be worth considering, but with just one card slot it's a "no go" for me.
The subpar battery in a camera larger and heavier than a Sony a9ii (which manages to have 2 full size card slots), the absence of UI, U2 and U3 custom profiles and the lack of real aperture rings are a no-go for me !
Thanks for the review. I was on the fence about selling my A7IV. I use the camera for both photos and videos--travel videos and portrait photography. I like the smaller size, IBIS, AI. Not too concerned about extra sd slot or micro hdmi. But, I am a bit concerned about overheating in hotter temps. My A7IV has overheated (4K, 8-bit, natural) during the Denver summers.
Glad it was helpful! here are a few tips on overheating... first, make sure your back screen is slightly pulled away from the body as it traps heat. 2. if you have an alternative power source, remove the battery door and power the camera from the USB-C outlet. 3. , make sure your set for warning before shut-off. many people miss this in the menus.
Thanks for the content! I would have loved to see sample images shot through one of the tiny primes you recommended. Nevertheless, I placed my order. The a7cii will be my first ICL Sony.

if you never had a a7RV or other high end Sony with the better EVF then you wont notice. The EVF is the same as found on their APSC line and its fine for 95% of the folks.
@@sjsphotog I do have two A7R5 cameras. But, I recently took a trip and took two a6600 camera bodies with me and left the A7R5s at home. Yes, definitely. The kit lens that is the 28-60mm is a very sharp and lightweight lens that would pair well with the a7CII. Here is a link for the lens: tinyurl.com/yspmftux
I bought this camera body really for that little extra megapixels but I was not fully understanding how powerful the sponsor is and how quick/accurate the auto focus is. I don’t mind putting my 70-200gm ii, 300mm, or even my 400mm on this camera body. Highly recommend this camera body for sure
Really great video, so nice to see an honest review of this camera with examples. Can I ask why you opted for the a7cii rather than the a7cr. I was initially tempted by the a7cr but my gut now feels that the a7cii is probably the more sensible choice. Be great to know why you choose the a7cii.
I had the a7RIV and mostly shot it on medium jpg. files were just massive and I never need that big a file. 32mp is the sweet spot, plenty big for large file needs but not so huge it clogs up my hard drives.
@@PMRTV thanks, yes totally agree. I have EOs r5 that is 45mp and have always found that to be more than perfect. So agree 60+ is a bit excessive. Thank you for the video. Even though I have A1s and an A7RV I’m also getting an A7CII. Curious what flash you are using with it. Hope it’s relatively small. What do you recommend? I have a family of Sigma I-Series f/2 lenses I plan to use with it that I got for the A7C that I’m very happy with. Also plan to try and use some of my Zeiss Batis lenses with it even though the are a little large but not really heavy. Even GM glass up to 50mm f/1.4 fits it well except when you want to travel smaller and light.
Looking forward to your trying the A7cii on sports for two reasons. With both A7iv and A6700, I had to go down to Hi mode and lower instead of Hi-S because the AF couldn't keep up. And I'm still not satisfied with the hit rate. Would like to see your results. I also want to see the impact of the first curtain electronic shutter only (no full mechanical shutter on the A7cii) on the bokeh.
@@PMRTVTo be specific, I have very low hit rate for running. It seems that smooth movements (surfing, long jump) are handled much better. You can see pictures by googling my name and Ekiden Strasbourg. From this session, only 5% were fully focused.
@PM-R, Great informative review. At the beginning of you mentioned the 50mm/2.5 G, were the first two portrait images taken with that lens or the 50/1.4?
Most of my assignments do not require such a massive file size. If I shot only landscapes, I could see buying the a7CR but I do a great variety of assignments that those massive files sizes are overkill for. 32mp creates a BIG file!!! For sports, I only use the alpha 1 bodies...
Nice point.. I also worry about giant file size.. and.. it’s gonna be my first Sony camera, looks like it’s the best choice for now A7c ii? Why don’t you recommend 24-105 OSS? Does the 24-70 f4 significantly better?
Following up again. You showed the picture with the mechanical shutter of the drummer. Do you ever have issues with the A7CII only having a single curtain mechanical shutter with only EFCS instead of a full two curtain mechanical shutter like the A7IV or A7RV has? Curious that you never mention it. Thank you.
@@PMRTV understand but on the A1 the electronic shutters have less rolling artifacts. The A1 also only has a single curtain mechanically shutter with EFCS but it’s a different shutter design so I don’t know how that factors into the results. Really interested in the A7CII results when I’m not taking my A1’s. Thank you for your feedback.
Hi there my friend.I’m interested in the bokeh distortion effect when shooting wide one at shutter speeds over 1/1000 of a second.I love shooting wide open and this may change my mind on the a7cii or cr……many thanks.
if you can live without the near perfect EVF of the a7RV and it's ability to shoot 60P video in 4K, then maybe... I love mine but I'm forced to shoot sports related video with other bodies
What about for wildlife? If im going to get the sony 200-600, should i buy the a7cii, a7iv, a6700 for the reach of the crop sensor or maybe the a7riv for the cropping power? How is the autofocus compared to each other, and do you think 33 megapixels is enough for the heavy cropping that happens in wildlife photography? Also the 200-600 vs the 100-400 gm for wildlife? I could get a high megapixel body like the a7riv or get the a6700 to get the 600 ff equiv Theres so many possible combos, and I just dont know which one would be best (I want to do primarily wildlife and birds, but a little bit of everything) It would be great to have your input. 😊
Before I say anything, it needs to be said that I own two a1 bodies that I use for sports. When I need a larger file, I reach for those. But 33mp is still a big file. I use my A7CII all the time in crop mode (1.5X) and then commonly crop the image from there. I have no issue with doing this. The AF system is excellent in the A7CII, A7CR, A7IV, and A7RV but none of them will hold a cnadle to the low light AF and fast acquire of the a9, a9II, and a1. So if you shoot a lot of birds in flight, you are better off having one of these and having most of your images be tack sharp with a smaller file (a9/a9II) than having massive files that are out of focus. "wildlife photography" covers a lot of ground... if you are shooting animals and birds running and flying, respectively, then the a1 is likely your best solution.
@@PMRTV I think the a9ii and a1 are out of budget, but coming from a 24 megapixel body, i feel it is a little bit lacking. I forgot to mention that i also want it to be an all purpose camera, that I can use for everything like travel, but i will predominatly use for wildlife. Then what do you think would be the best option out of the a7cii, a6700, a7iv, and a7riv? I usually dont shoot fast action and birds in flight, but would the a7riv, a7cii, a7iv, and a6700 work in those situations?
Additionally(sorry), do you think the a9 with 24 megapixels is enough and is it good for the things i previously said i wanted to shoot or would any of the other 4 be better for my needs.
I'm torn between this and the Lumix S5x ii. The Sony might be a slightly better photography camera but the Panasonic seems like a slightly better cinema camera, especially with an internal cooling fan.
MAN, I don't think so. Shooting full frame in 4k with 4:2:2 is the bomb... It's an editor's dream, those clips--so easy to color grade and work with. I agree it's a great camera but it's a half pound heavier and the AF is no match for the Sony. S-Cinetone alone is worth the price of admission.
@@PMRTV I read the Sony overheats in long form video sessions due to no internal fan. It's not a FX3 replacement despite using the same sensor. Pretty sure the Panasonic records in 4:2:2 at 4k as well, it even has open gate 6.2k at 30 fps and the ability to output in Blackmagic RAW which is great since I use DaVinci Resolve Studio.
Have the 7RV and CII , best combo. Waiting for Adobe to add RAW converter for the CII, I have the 24 and 35 1.4 GM and , although they are Ok with the CII. Thinking got get the 40mm 2.5 to pair with the CII , how do you like that lens?.......if you had to choose one of the three amigos, which one Ould it be?
hows your thoughts if you have received it? The one thing i hate about the new size sony is EVF and screen being poor but otherwise perfection @@MrPetebuster1
Great review as usual Patrick! I have a pair of A1's but bought an A7C for the flippy screen. I liked it a lot, but not having a front dial for aperture and limited ability to customize was a drawback. The A7C-II fixes that AND adds so much more flexibility with the insane autofocus and great touch operations. I just bought a second one and pretty much all my commercial work is being shot on those now. Love this camera!
Hey There - Thanks for the content. I'm considering renting this for a week for a trip home over the Holidays to give it a try - probably with the 24 2.8, 40 2.5 and 85 1.8. I'm new to the Sony ecosystem and was wondering if anyone has a good, simple resource that discusses the camera operations including the different focusing options - a "how to" if you will. A brief RUclips scan has been limited. Thanks.
Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it. Thanks for the video link. Do you have any additional content that speaks to AF set-up and what you recommend for people, city and such? More from a journalistic perspective rather than sports or wildlife. I went to my local store and played around with the camera a bit. It''s different than my OM-1 in terms of AF, selection points, focus area and such. Thanks again for your time! @@PMRTV
Why ? It crops in 4K@60fps. The camera is good but it crops horribly in 4K@60. I don't get it. Seems that SONY has trouble making cameras that don't crop 1.5x in 4K@60. I don't get it. I have the A7CR and its miles better than the A7CII.
Quick question, I just picked up an A7CII open-box and I noticed there’s a slight gap between the bottom two shutter blades. Does yours have the same slight gap between the shutter blades? It’s only noticeable when you’re looking down at it from an angle. Not sure if this impacts performance but want to make sure I dont have a defective camera
What is one megapixels these days, but the Sony A7CII do have 33 megapixels. 514 g (1.13 lb / 18.13 oz). For me the issues with the Sony A7CII is the small EVF with low resolution, the lack of a joystick and the fully articulating back screen which makes the camera thicker.
Question: Are you using Sony glass or Tamron or Sigma, or Canon with MC-11?
@@PMRTV Sony 2.8 70 200 GM2.
@@PMRTVTo be specific, I have very low hit rate for running. It seems that smooth movements (surfing, long jump) are handled much better.
You can see pictures by googling my name and Ekiden Strasbourg. From this session, only 5% were fully focused.
Brilliant, informative and enjoyable
Glad you think so!
Would you still pick the 20-70 f4 over the 24-50 f2.8 or go with the 24,40, 50G primes?
you won't like my answer. I have them all... but I will be selling my 24CP though.
@@PMRTV Wish I could do that too. It's a love affair with photography, not a paid gigs. So hard for me to justify doing the same.
@PM-R, Great informative review. At the beginning of you mentioned the 50mm/2.5 G, were the first two portrait images taken with that lens or the 50/1.4?
FE50mm f/1.5GM
I thought A7Cii didn't have mechanical shutter (referencing 11:40). I just purchased my a7cii and it is coming on Monday. :)
it does.
@@PMRTV good to know! Just not first curtain mechanical
what do you think about A7C R ? isn't it more capable to support your assignments?
Most of my assignments do not require such a massive file size. If I shot only landscapes, I could see buying the a7CR but I do a great variety of assignments that those massive files sizes are overkill for. 32mp creates a BIG file!!! For sports, I only use the alpha 1 bodies...
A7Cr has much better colors than A7Cii and significantly better AWB. Those are enough reasons to choose one.
Nice point.. I also worry about giant file size.. and.. it’s gonna be my first Sony camera, looks like it’s the best choice for now A7c ii? Why don’t you recommend 24-105 OSS? Does the 24-70 f4 significantly better?
@@PMRTV You don't need always to use the 61 Megapixel, you can switch down to 26 or to 15 MP - even in raw.
what didnt you like about the a7cr?
Following up again. You showed the picture with the mechanical shutter of the drummer. Do you ever have issues with the A7CII only having a single curtain mechanical shutter with only EFCS instead of a full two curtain mechanical shutter like the A7IV or A7RV has?
Curious that you never mention it. Thank you.
I really have not had an issue with that. But remember, I own two A1's that I use for shooting sports so when stuff is moving, I shoot the A1's.
Hi there my friend.I’m interested in the bokeh distortion effect when shooting wide one at shutter speeds over 1/1000 of a second.I love shooting wide open and this may change my mind on the a7cii or cr……many thanks.
you bet!
@@PMRTV does it effect the bokeh shooting wide open over 1/1000 of a second? Some say it does….
You did not list the 50mm f/1.4 which is $1300
it's a great lens!!!!
I have the a7rv for the last 6 months (I never needed the 61 mp, but wanted everything else). I'm not debating on moving to the a7cii - is that crazy?
if you can live without the near perfect EVF of the a7RV and it's ability to shoot 60P video in 4K, then maybe... I love mine but I'm forced to shoot sports related video with other bodies
Why shoot video with other cameras? Is the A7CR better for video?
Not having dual card slots have put me off upgrading to sony .
I could get a high megapixel body like the a7riv or get the a6700 to get the 600 ff equiv
Theres so many possible combos, and I just dont know which one would be best (I want to do primarily wildlife and birds, but a little bit of everything) It would be great to have your input.
33mp sensor, not 32
thanks!
I'M REALLY PARTIAL TO THE 40MM F/2.5 BUT YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH ANY OF THEM!
Its not that much smaller than the A7IV with a much worse LVF whats the point to it??
It is so much smaller and lighter than a7IV!!!
@@PMRTV Well i have ordered one, i think if i can cope with the viewfinder it may be a nice replacement. Can only really know by getting one
hows your thoughts if you have received it?

Thanks.

I love your lens choices!!! Go for it!
@@PMRTV
How about sony 24-105 OSS? for A7c ii?
it's a great lens and offers even more tele range than the 20-70. But the lens is bigger than the camera!!! LOL
Exactly!! LOL! u really had me with ur 40mm 2.5G review @@PMRTV
Why ? It crops in 4K@60fps. The camera is good but it crops horribly in 4K@60. I don't get it. Seems that SONY has trouble making cameras that don't crop 1.5x in 4K@60. I don't get it. I have the A7CR and its miles better than the A7CII.
Thank you!
So sad Sony is not updating the Sony a7iv :(
It's still a brand new camera! It was just launched on Oct. 21, in 2021. It's literally two years old.
@@PMRTV with firmware updates they can easily add luts and many new features the new cameras have.
It sounds like you’re looking for an insult. I assumed that he meant, “not African-American.” He was speaking ad lib - please -give him a break.
But I do like the compact design with the EVF in the upper corner. I have four compact prime Lenses, the Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8, the Sony Carl Zeiss Sonar 35mm 2.8 ZA, the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical and the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 ZA, I never use zoom lenses !
quite a good collection of glass...
@@PMRTV Yes, I am very happy with my glass collection ☺ My other Lenses is Sony 14mm 1.8 GM, Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0 Aspherical, Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm 2.8, Sony 135mm 1.8 GM and many analog adapted Lenses, fx Leica R, Canon FDn and Tamron SP adaptall-2 Lenses. I am waiting for Sony (Tamron, Sigma, ?) to make longe tele prime Lenses of 300mm 4.0, 400mm 4.5 and 500mm 5.6 🙂
"he is not a normal complexion, he is an Indian guy" ?
Too much orange/yellow tint in skin color. Also the sky has cyan tint. The A7Cr colors look a lot better.
I'v e never had both cameras at the same time so I cannot speak to that. I borrowed the a7CR for my run out West in the Valley of Fire, and then bought my own two copies of the a7CII. No regrets, btw...
@@PMRTV I also bought A7Cii, because I don't need the extra resolution of A7Cr. But side by side images from A7Cr do look better. Fortunately, it's not difficult to fix orange issues in LR and lower WB temperature. That takes care of most color problems.
Hi. Is it possible to see the difference? A comparison? Would like to see :)) :))
"normal complexion"?
I was going to comment the exact same thing, pretty sure he didn’t mean anything by it but yeah… no such thing as a “normal” complexion
He clearly meant “African-American”, which is a “normal” dark complexion in the USA. It was ad lib: not a university dissertation. If one is looking for offence, one will surely find it.
He's not a "normal complexion." he's an Indian guy?! Please tell me what a normal complexion is? Oh wait let me guess. Unsubbed
