- I got invited to NYC for the launch of the brand new Sony A1 II camera body today so I wanted to make a video of the most important top three things this new camera offers sports photographers.

Really good video. I have preordered the mark 2 pretty much sold on the pre capture feature. Do mostly wildlife. Recapture plus 50 megapixels is very attractive. Will be interesting to see the battery life with this feature. I would like to know more about your experience with the 300gm. Did I understand correctly that it replaced your 400? Do you use with teleconverter?
300GM did replace my 400GM. Battery life is less than on A9III but it only makes sense. My shooting is all jpg/heif so if you shoot RAW it will be much worse as the files are so much larger.
What does GM stand for? Thanks for any replies.
I have a A1. Your opinion to upgrade from it to the mark 2 or the a9iii? I do sports but branching out to landscape wildlife and portraits. Thanks great video
It can go either way. shooting landscapes with A1 and portraits it will perform killer. The AI in the A1II wouldn't help you in the least for either. if you have the money, A1II is better. If you don't, just keep what you have.
The a1ii is an amazing camera, but I really want a a9iii. Just because I want the global shutter. I use strobes in my industry every time I shoot a rodeo. But I would not say no if someone wanted to send me a a1ii haha. As always, love your videos. Keep up coming.
yep, if you are shooting sports with strobes, there is no other camera :)
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the A1 II as a sports photographer!
thanks Marc!
Thanks. Always informative and to the point.
Thanks for watching!
Hope you’re well man! I’m going to let my a1 age a little more before upgrading but I do love those new features. I’ll definitely borrow one from Pro support. Hey I wasn’t sure if you heard but we’re having a MLB game with the Braves and the Reds inside Bristol Motor Speedway next August.. I figured for sure you’d be coming. I’m going to document the field build leading up to it in exchange for some credentials to shoot it. Hope to see you there.
I didn't know that. Really cool!!!
Speech to text is something I have dreamed about for years!
This isn't a new feature. Transfer and Tagging has had it for a while
nice im super keen to finally trade in the a7rV and grab the a1ii for afl sport. i crop a lot as i shoot 70-200 with the tc14 on it so hopefully wont miss 11 mp to much ut should get a lot more in focus pics
you won't miss it, or the out of focus frames when you shoot backlit. A1II will be next level + for you coming out of a A7RV :)
@PMRTV oh yes some games are midday so shoot backlit to get decent images and had so many come out out of focus so I'm pretty keen on a2ii if it's much better at that to
Thank you, Patrick!
You bet, Howard!!!
Thanks PM-R. You didn't mention the auto AI that will recognize the subject without you choosing human, bird, animal, etc. I have one ordered ahead of my January trip to Thailand. I will take both the A1 II and my A9III on this trip. Cheers
as most of us shoot sports that watch my channel, mine is almost always set to human. So that feature is not so interesting. Every once in a while a squirrel will get loose on the field at an MLB game, so maybe you are right ;)
Thanks for taking the time to make all of these videos PMR. Really good stuff. Besides higher MP and the ability to punch in, would you give the A1ii other advantages over the A9iii. In a previous video you had said the A9iii was king over the A1 and curious to hear more comparing the A9iii and A1ii. Maybe a video comparison?
AF is a toss up between the two now. A1 is easily as good at AF as A9III.
YES!!!! Voice to text!
NOW IT ALL MAKE SENSE TO ME! If the low light performance improved on top of all the new features, then the 6500 dollars price tag is justifiable.
I can see that it is better. I got up to only 2000 ISO yesterday but the files look like 160 ISO even when you crop them. I'm super happy with low noise on the new A1II!!!
Great review. One thing that no one is talking about is the ability to assign Digital Manual Focus to be always on (in the menu). Just like the A9iii. With the A1 you can only assign it with the dial, which means you can't have DMF on and CAF at the same time. I am a back button focusser, and not being able to take over focus manually was a real disappointment. Like you, I'm going to sell one of my A1's and upgrade ASAP.
Good point!
Great video. As someone who takes pictures of birds in various countries, the ability to attach the birds name to the pic almost simultaneously , will obviate the need to carry a small taperecorder. I own the original Alpha 1, but the above plus precapture is very enticing.
cool
Is pre capture for both RAW and Jpeg? I know in the Nikon Z9 it’s only for Jpeg.
yes
I'm not sure whether it's relevant; but I noticed much improved WB when the A7RV came out with its dedicated AI processor. So I'm definitely expecting more accurate / consistent colour from this model. Look forward to seeing some of your hands-on sessions with this camera.
agreed!
Interesting buddy! :)
Glad you think so!
Thanks for sharing
you bet!
Fair comment with regards to the needs of a sports photographers
:)
Which Sony body would you say is best with? moire. my A1 is terrible when shooting presenters against an LED screen. My A9 mk1 is much better.
So I'm thinking of getting an A9III as the lower MP count will help.
you'd want A9III for anything in that situation.
Great vid! You said you got rid of your 400 2.8 for the 300 2.8? Why?
I also have the 600GM and the 4 and 6 were always too close in focal length. I love the lack of weight and bulk of the 300GM vs. 400GM and I still get the eye candy look of the real long glass. No regrets so far...
@@PMRTV not sure if you know sony also has 200-600 G. Even though it may not have GM badge, 200-600 is still an amazing lens esp with an internal zoom and short zoom throw. It would have saved you alot of money and only needed to carry one lens than two lens...
Alternatively, you can also get a teleconverter for 300 2.8 if you really need to have GM badge. Guess pro photographers are just spoiled with the money they make as they just need to have the fancy GM badge to justify 😅😊
@@crhuynh8 yes, I use the 300GM with tc's when I would have used the 200-600G before. I also agree it could be a GM lens--very sharp!!!
@@PMRTV Very nice reply to the above comment. I mean you're "PM-R" of course you know about the 200-600. Very kind response. ;)
Wait.. there's a slot track there????
yes, and those suckers were pretty fast too...
For wildlife and birds:
1) AI autofocus mode selector.
2) Precapture.
3) Better iso performande
4) Google Drive functionality.
Slightly expensive but probably worth it.
Disappointed no global shutter on this camera. I will be upgrading my A1 to A1 II
if they had put global shutter in it, it might have been $16,000 USD!
You were never tempted to switch to the A9 III with the pre-capture?
files are WAY smaller with A9III
I have 2- A9III bodies right now. I will use A1II for larger file shoots and with shorter glass for punching in.
Of course the a1 II is Sony’s latest and greatest. That’s not the problem. The Nikon Z8 does almost all of what you mentioned for half the price of the a1 II and continues to get new features like precapture added for FREE via firmware updates - which, mind you, Sony could have also done with the original a1 but chose to make you pay thousands more for it instead. It’s hard to justify such a price tag when Sony has failed to show any commitment to keeping a flagship model feature competitive for the lifetime of that camera.
Even if you were right, and I'm not saying you are, none of Sony's GMaster glass will work on a Nikon. I'm staying put man... Cheers!
I am keeping my A1
BUT, i was also told that the body of the new a1ii is the a9iii body?? Is that true?
yes, pretty much. Same size which feels great in your hands :)
I can give you 20 reasons to buy a used A1 over the A1 ii.
… 😂 … 20 reasons? my one and only reason to buy the a1 II over a used a1 is: I have the money … 😏 …
Set your wB baby lol
it was afunky light with a sticker on it in my hotel...
I know I could tell still good content
@@Jwitherow1964 thx!
Ask your wife if you need another new camera
:0
Where is the FW 3.0 update for the A1? Why does the piece of crap a7IV get “animal/eye AF in Video” and “focus bracketing” yet the A1 gets treated like a Palestinian?
lol
A little bit to racial, hey?
My om1 been doing that years
not in FF :)
… with 50 MP? 😏
@ pro capture
tough to justify a 3k difference between similar cameras competitors make
just remember the competitors don't make GMaster lenses. THAT difference is pretty awesome in the 10,000' view :)
@PMRTV I agree there are so many choices in the Sony system
@@PMRTV Agreed, Patrick just keep in mind Sony could kill it with a stacked crop sensor camera in an A7 body, the birding and wildlife crowd would gladly pay double the price of the 6700, which is a great camera just not ideal for tele lenses.
Top 1 reason not to buy the Sony a1 II, PRICE. Too mucho
