- We all have a thread that drew us to quilting. We sat down with Trisch, a quilter and maker from Annandale, VA, to hear about her quilting journey: how she got started, what she likes to make and give, and why quilting has remained such a big part of her life.
Every quilt has a story, and so does every quilter. We’re in love with them all. Does Trisch's story resonate with you? Share with us in the comments below.

I enjoy the online quilting channels, it is my only connection with quilters.
Same here. 😉
Me too!
My love of quilting came from a dear neighbor as a young child. She was so creative with patterns, her work was very precise and she always said, Do something everyday to show your day of achieving a memory.
Either being something small or large. Don’t waste your day.
If she could see quilting now compared to yesterday, she would be happy to see time hasn’t been waisted.
Love quilting and RUclips and Missouri Star has taught
Me so much. 😅
Beautiful story. Jenny has changed the work of quilting for sure. Quilting is like watching a beautiful piece of artwork coming together.
I'm teaching myself to quilt and I'm 67 . It's so much fun and I l9ve bright colors!!
I'm 66 and teaching myself too via RUclips. I've been working on 8 quilts for grandkids for 13 months! I hope to be finished in 2 months. My beginner quilts are very imperfect, but want grandkids to have something to remember me by in case I'm not here to make them quilts when I've got more experience. Nice to know I'm not the only one starting quilting in mid-sixties! I love it so much, I'm almost mad at myself for not starting at a younger age! 😂
This was such a fun experience and afterwards I thought of so many other things I wish I had shared, so I'm adding more here. I've had so many wonderful experiences due to quilting.
I helped my daughter's 3rd grade class make a "factors of 12" quilt. They divided into teams of 2. I brought my scraps stash (every quilter has one!) and they had to design a quilt block that represented factors of 12. These were kids who would never have experienced quilting in their family. The blocks weren't perfect, but the process was perfect. Kids being creative, working together, collaborating...it was amazing. I turned their blocks into a quilt that was displayed at the school for a while.
A teacher friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer. I met with her class and had them each draw a picture for her. I scanned and printed onto fabric and made it into a quilt that I gave to her and she used while she was getting chemo.
My fourth child died shortly after birth. After so many years of making quilts for friends, I received baby quilts from friends. Those quilts are buried with my son. It brings me peace to know he is wrapped in love.
Why do I quilt? It brings me joy!
I absolutely love these quilters stories. I haven’t yet really made a connection with other quilters online or locally, but am inspired to try and find some new quilting friends. Thank you
I’m giving it to you because I care about you and I want you to know that 💜. That says it in a nutshell. Thank you for sharing 💖
I was emotional right along with you. We are giving of ourselves when we create quilts and then give them away to others.❤
Thanks for sharing your story Trisch! Quilting is from the heart😊
I’m from Annandale! Used to volunteer at Sully’s quilt show ❤
Such a beautiful story, love it. Quilting is very emotional.
Hi! I grew up in Falls Church. I live in Aldie. I learned how to make my first quilt all by hand. I did several that way. I took a long break and have started back this year by using all of the new things. I live in Aldie, VA now. Retiring in June and can't wait to have more time to quilt and cross stitch. On line stitchers are my community for now. It's great!
When you retire make a date with yourself to do your quilting every day. Just as you devoted time on your job. Devote a certain amount of time to do your craft. Time is short.
Good advice, Thank you Gwen
I made two twin bed quilts for my babies in my 30’s. Both quilts sat in Katrina flood water for 3 weeks. I rescued my daughter’s sampler quilt and washed it 10 times until it didn’t smell. The log cabin quilt i couldn’t save. Both were hand quilted. In my 77th year I’ve started quilting again and learning how to FMQ. I love it even though the results are not that great on my domestic machine. I finished a quilt in 4 months for a charity and starting an Aztec quilt for my grown daughter. I don’t think you can be too old to start as long as you still have hands and a brain.
Love this sentiment.
Thanks for sharing your story
I feel similarly about hand quilting the special quilts. I feel like by the time I give it to the recipient the quilt is pre-loved and somehow the fibers know that and pass it on. Fanciful perhaps, but the thought makes me happy. Seems to make the recipients happy too.😊
Trisch's story was very moving.
I love this woman! Bless you❤️
Bellissimo.
I love hand quilting. I relate to this story ❤
Love this story
