🖍 This episode beautifully describes the creative process in the mind of a quilter. It’s the “grown up” version of a brand new giant box of crayons and a new coloring book. “What page should I color first and which of these bazillion colors will I use?”🖍🤔 It’s my absolute favorite part of creating beautiful quilts. And your linen stash is amazing!
❤Loved having shared this moment with you this morning. Can’t wait to see what you make first, because you are absolutely right…there are many beautiful linen quilts in that “crayon box” of fabric stash, and you have so many fun pages ready and waiting in your “coloring book”. 🥰

Me too Beth, and I had collected shirts for quilts, especially linen shirts, for almost 25 years before I found Cathy. And I had missed the most obvious next goal: to break them down! Doing that now, and having So Much Fun. Then once I have my palette, it’s on to Sew Much Fun (my favorite part is piecing ☺️💙).

Shirts are such a great source for fabric, especially linen because by the yard it gets pricy. I love breaking them down it is so rewarding. It’s like a “quilting fabric harvest” 😂

Allways a delight to "hear you thinking" on the go. Last day I was so much laughing "alone with you" that my partner came to check what I was doing. I almost reply: oh just having a cup of tea with a good friend! As he was ready to get rid of his old office shirts... I did'nt cut them as usual to clean, but I decided I should use this precious fabric for better use and try to do a quilt with them, even if I dont respect the "quilt law" of America. As very sewing beginner you give me inspiration and confidence, thanks so much for the time you take to share with us. I'm very impressed to see all what you manage to do with a full time job, family etc... I could not. But just like you I have 1000 ideas and desires a minute... I just need to pick one project and start! With all my love from the other side of the ocean. ❤

Been collecting linen for a quilt for many years. Thank you for the thoughtful and thorough explanation for making this. I don’t have nearly the rainbow variety you are surrounded by, though.
•My colors are so dominated by a variety of acid greens, I really want at least a little more color variety before I start piecing.
•Until I saw your collection, I thought perhaps linen accepted those greens in preference to other dyes.
•After seeing your collection of linen, I wonder if there is just one donor for those shirts, and she prefers acid greens. 😉
•I’m especially glad you emphasized the necessary precautions with linen grain and raveling. I usually use a bowl of liquid starch for that.
•I once was commissioned to finish a blue and white double wedding ring quilt that had been crushed into a ball and buried at the back of the quilter’s closet, where it was discovered by her daughter after she died.
•No wonder she died. I tried to iron some of the blocks and rows, and it was hopeless. She had not understood how to do the ‘seam jumping’ at the center of the double wedding ring block, so each center was warped and twisted. And the pieces were not cut accurately. All I could guess was that the fabric had not been ironed before cutting. I imagine in my 80’s I might become similarly impatient.
•With a double wedding ring that was Hopeless.
•The woman had belonged to a large quilting class, and they were enlisted to rip the entire quilt, block by block. I made two large scrap pillows from some of the extra beautiful blues and white, and raffled them off to thank the ladies.
•Then I soaked each piece in a bowl of liquid starch, ironed and recut each piece, and reconstructed each block, and completed the king-size quilt.
•It was really a touching experience, to complete her last UFO.
•Thanks for reminding us to use a lot of starch. I hadn’t thought of that blue and white quilt for 20 years.
•And now I’m ready to find a rectangular pattern and some more colors of linen. And maybe some dye for some of that acid green. 😊

Lol! Been on a diet and lost weight! Came home with 2 linen shirts for myself to wear ! I always get 100% cotton or linen if possible! Feels so much better! Im a bit ocd and it doesn't irritate me as much as poly blendsThat being said , I prefer knitting with wool because it is quality breathable fiber ! It is biodegradable and earth friendly! Linen ,by its nature doesn't hold dye well and has a softer color scheme The quilts I love are soft and comfortable! The batt would need to be 100% cotton to have that subtle tactile quality imo. This vision of yours brings to light the necessity of interpreting the fabric constraints! Excellent!❤👏👏

You’re such a wonderful inspiration 💕 I’ve never had luck with charity shops but I also was never looking for mens shirts on those trips. Went today thinking maybe I’ll find a couple good shirts. Someone had donated over 30 xl-xxl brand new (plastic lining still in the collars extra buttons still attached) name brand 100% linen, 100% cotton, and linen cotton blend shirts! Including brooks brothers, Caribbean, and Armani brands, $5.99 each 😱 took so much restraint to not buy everything, ended up with 9 shirts - 4, 100% linen and the others cotton and linen cotton blends - spent $50 (goodwill gives a discount if you pay cash I discovered). Best shopping trip ever and thought of you the whole time, took a lot of restraint to not buy everything 😂 thank you so much for motivating me to go, was such a blessing!

@@jennjennedington279haha guess it depends on where you live. My jackpot was at the goodwill on the southwest corner of Jog Road and Lantana road in Lake Worth, FL. Most of the store had not great stock as thrift stores usually do down here but I think a lot of that is caused by people who have a career hunting down items and reselling online. Their men’s shirts was the best stocked area by far (thanks to the huge donation of new shirts). Goodwill has a warehouse location in West Palm where you pay by the pound but it’s way too overwhelming for me, went once years ago and never again 😂 South Miami, Aventura, and East Lauderdale have a large population of residents who wear stuff once and get rid of it, their stores might be even better. Palm beach not as much except around maybe Boca. 6+ hour drive from the state line if ya take 95, like 8-9hrs from 75 but def a nice place to visit especially if you have interest in scuba diving - surprisingly uncommon known fact - palm beach is ranked 3rd best reef scuba location in the world 🙂

Linen relaxes. I don’t think in reality it stretches, it just relaxes. The way a very independent and angry toddler relaxes after awhile when you hold them and rock them to hug it out. It does feel heavy and I need heavy to fall asleep and of course that is a horrible habit for sleeping. I almost always wake up hot. I love to listen to everything you have to say about anything quilting. Now I know I need a linen quilt. Great chat. TFS

I recently dyed an old linen white linen shirt that had gone yellow. It was really easy and it took the colour really easily and looks great in hot pink. That pattern you have picked out would lend itself to dyed linen to create the gradients of colour as well. Just thinking out loud.

Oh I'm so glad you commented, Michelle! I am cooking an idea about using the pinks/blushes together but it needs a contrasting color to keep it interesting. I think that a mustard or burnt sienna would look great but I don't happen to have that in linen! My friend suggested dyeing some of the linen and I wondered if it would take the dye well! And then, voilà! Your comment answered my question perfectly! Thank you! ❤️

It is super crinkly after washing and drying, so just know that! You can iron it (although be careful if the batting isn't cotton) to smooth it out some. It acts just exactly like linen clothes---so if that look bothers you, you might not enjoy it in quilt form unless you're willing to iron it!

A whole quilt of linen sounds lovely. I do find the fabric trickier, maybe I just didn't starch the ever-living fire out of it though!! Also, can I just mention that I saw bolts of linen at Hobby Lobby's fabric section! I was soooo tempted, but I have decided no more new fabric until I get some of all the fabric I have used up.
Love love linen, but batiks are my kryptonite :)
The whole, I don't need more WIP's made me chuckle! that is also me in a nutshell - I have fabric in "project cases" just waiting for the right pattern, but every time I look at the fabrics, I want to get started on them right now. I had to put most of my projects aside because we painted the living room and the sofa no longer looked good with the new paint, so I pieced, sewed and quilted 9 big pillowcases and it looks like a new couch!

I’m collecting linen too, although nearly as far along as you are and most of mine are stripes, with the exception of one peach with white floral pattern. I’m guessing that those small snowball corners will be tricky with linen! Also, another thing to consider with linen is the weight of linen/heft of the fabric varies a lot. So if you’re collecting for a specific project it’s helpful to collect/use similar weight linen (Yes, ask me how I know…😂). Lastly, linen works well with something less than batting in between. I made several small linen quilts one year using a sheet as the “batting”. They were a great year-around weight especially for the weather of the southern US.

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  4 месяца назад +1

Thank, Sister, for the reminder and suggestions! The linen quilt I'm currently working on has different weights of linen and it has posed some challenges! Lots of comments asking about what batting I will use, and some suggestions (like yours) for sheets as batting (like flannel)...I know it's a good idea, but I want something with a little thickness, so we'll see! 🤓 I bet your peach linen with white floral pattern is pretty!❤️

LOL! Thanks, Dedra! I didn't realize I could win for sitting cross-legged on the floor, but I'll take it! 😂🤩 Linen is a woven fabric, but not all woven fabrics are linen, if I understand correctly. I know Ruby Star Society put out a line of wovens (Warp and Weft, if memory serves)--some quilters love them, and some quilters don't! If you treat it like linen (starch heavily, cut on-or-close to the grain, press don't iron, and don't use steam) I think you will enjoy quilting with them. They do fray/ravel, especially if you don't starch them, so be prepared! 😉

It is the most comfortable bed covering that I have ever used! It is soft and drapes beautifully. It is breathable and does not trap heat. I like it better than cotton batting, which is what I have always used in the past. I love the bamboo! Perhaps you could try it in a small lap or throw-sized quilt before you commit to bed-sized. But I wholeheartedly recommend bamboo!

What a great linen stash. I'm hoping to find some palazzo style linen pants over the summer. Especially drawstring as they're so easy to unpick.
Most of my linens are block colours ir stripes, I don't think florals are very common, but I'll definitely look out for them.
Some great quilt patterns shown here too.

Thanks, Maggie! ❤️ If I found some wide-leg linen pants, they would be on my body in a New York minute! I LURVVVV linen pants! 😍🤩 But you are right, they are easier to unpick and there's a lot of fabric in pants!
