I’m sorry.. I am not diminishing the fact that this is a very realistic disorder.. HOWEVER, I call BS on anyone thinking that this will be ‘fixed’ in ONE WEEK. 26 years of a repetitive diet - that doesn’t go away in days.
That's right ! And even the foods they made her try don't taste good to an average person! I mean i don't have any food disorder that i'm aware of but still baked potato and fried carrots with no seasoning no nothing are not tasty for me! But maybe they have a point by doing so idk ! 😅😅
It's so weird to see how these doctors approach the problem. She hasn't eaten anything but fries for 26 years, so let's try raw mushrooms and asparagus- foods that 90% of people don't like, and then watch her gag with a judgy face. Empty toast, empty pasta, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes maybe as a first not too scary step...
I know, either those doctors are idiots or they just wanted to create drama for the show. So many people hate mushrooms and asparagus! I would have started her on plain oven baked fries (no oil), and maybe other foods that can be baked to be crispy, or are naturally crispy. The cucumber was a good idea.
I’m honestly so happy for her because she finally found out what’s been going on with her for so long- and now she knows it and is relieved. I’m also happy for her knowing that her daughter is a normal child as well and isn’t directly like her.
Don't speak too soon. They only helped her for like a week.. over decades of her struggling. Let's just hope she handle it really well with those undocumented years, with her child.
Right? Like the mom was like “the doctors say she’s gonna grow out of it so I kept serving french fries - FOR THE REST OF HER CHILDHOOD AND TEENAGE LIFE??
she took her daugther to doctors, and the doctors said she would grow out of it. than, he had to see her daugther vmiting anything that was not french fries. to tell your genious solution than mate?
“Between the ages of 3 and 4 she stopped eating everything but french fries” Some people can’t be parents, you don’t allow your child to choose what they eat.
Her doctors probably have already advised her parents to let her get hungry enough to eat what's put in front of her without realising how severe her food phobia is, very few young kids will starve themselves but Amber was a rare exception. I've seen another documentary about a girl who had never eaten anything in her life as she was raised on a feeding tube. When she starved herself for five days & lost 10 per cent of her body weight, there was nothing to be done but put her back on the tube.
@lavender I'm still fussier but also more adventurous than most, but Amber's reaction to all foods except certain kinds of French fries is how we'd feel if we were asked to taste live insects (dead ones I'd probably give a go in a restaurant where they'd have been safely farmed & prepared) or even foods we usually like if they were presented to look more like cat puke.
So apparently this episode aired in 2010 on TLC... which means that woman is now 40 and her daughter is 21. I wish we could get a follow-up on how their diets are now and how they got there...
It's kinda infuriating she tried to make it sound like feeding her daughter fries for every meal is simply teaching her "its ok to be different". No lol.
They wanted her to try new foods for the first time in 26 years and thought the best place to start was a deep fried carrot 😂 Why didn't she try ice cream or deep fried chicken?
She’s trying to become healthier because she knows eating only fries and junk food is unhealthy, if she ate more junk food that wouldn’t meet her goal and won’t motivate her if she does eat them. It might even make her worse, she also wants to make sure her daughter is healthy.
I had a food avoidance disorder over 40 years ago when it was pretty much unheard of. Most foods were virtually inedible to me. It was as if someone had offered me a plate of assorted insects to dine on. I was literally terrified of most foods and would sit in front of my plate for hours, refusing to eat. I didn’t care that I would starve, I could not force myself to eat it. If someone did force feed me, I would promptly throw up. It’s a real condition- a food phobia. Rare, but definitely real.
Oh wow that is definitely very interesting… I can’t imagine feeling that way toward all foods… I hope you’ve made some progress since then and found a way to deal with this it sounds really challenging
Why didn't they start her off easy with Mashed Potatoes, Baked Potato, Chilli Cheese Fries, Taco salad on top of fries then move on up to cucumbers, watermelon, more fruit and vegetables.
She cried when she knew this addiction was not her fault She cried harder when she found out that her daughter did not have her addiction That is what I call a true mother
I don't agree at all lol. She teaches her daughter that "it's okay to be different", which in this case is a terrible message because we are talking about bad diet and future health problem. So nope. Her daughter did not have the same condition, but the mother didn't send her a positive message towards food.
Because she doesn't eat anything else. When I was little I ate nothing but chocolate. But my parents wouldn't let me just eat chocolate. So I ended up severely underweight and I had to go to the doctor to get sugar infusion in my blood.
@@bandito4515 Lmao what? So if you say no once you immediately start saying no forever? If you say yes once you say yes forever? Sorry but idk if you're trying to sound deep or smart or whatever, but thats not true at all. What C C means in this comment is that parents should be able to say no to their children to prevent spoiling them. Her crying while eating the blue French fry proves that while yes she is a super taster and struggles with a lot of foods, this is also largely mental. It’s unfortunate that her daughter has picked up on her habits.
I guess she was supplied with vitamins and other supplements to keep her body growing. And potatoes themselves have loads of nutrition and vitamins as well. They just get a bad rep for being "junk food"
I mean I like French fries. But eating them for 2 days straight makes me sick. I can’t eat one thing for the rest of my life. Edit: Thanks for the likes!!!
Get her the air fryer that’s a start. Perhaps incorporate the vitamins and minerals Into the fries itself. It’s so heartbreaking when you can’t control your mind even though you know it’s not right. Seeking help early is def the right thing to do. Wishing them both all the best.
My brother went through a picky stage when he was like 5. My mom kept giving in letting him only eat cereal. My dad eventually had enough and made him eat beans. He sat at the table crying for so long with like 3 beans on his tongue. Finally he swallowed it. As an adult beans are now some of his favorite foods and he eats fine. Haha
Maybe true good for him. I hate Brussels sprouts, cooked carrots and parsnip. I was forced to eat them as as a kid but guess what? Didn't help, I still hate these I refuse to eat them now. Didn't work for me
I was a picky eater too in my teenage years I hated vegetables cooked or uncooked. But my elder sister was so kind and every time when I came from school and told them I don't eat this or that, She would feed me with her hands and would say if it didn't taste good spit it in my hands. I would be so hungry and whenever I tried I would love the food and wondered why I hated it in the first place. Then I would tell her because you're feeding me that's why I like it. :D
My mom forced me to eat veggies etc too. We’re a family of picky eaters, but if she hadn’t done that I might not have gotten all the nutrients I needed, so while I hated it at first, I’m glad she did. Also beans are one of my favourite foods! They’re very filling too.
so i googled her and apparently "The 30-something’s diet is limited to French fries, cheese pizza with light sauce, cheese ravioli, apples, bananas, green grapes and strawberries." and i think she's come pretty far from the time this was made- the article i read was from 2014.
That means she could try new things earlier, in the childhood. If her mother was worried about she starving, she could try another doctor. And another, and another, until they find a good specialist. Her life would be better, even if she can't eat everything, today her diet is a lot better, she eats really healthy things like fruits, this is really great.
@@beatrizamaral9354 "this means she could try new things earlier in the childhood." No actually it doesn't. If the food fears still outweigh the desire to change, or outweigh the understanding of the need for change (which is much harder if not impossible for many kids with this disorder), trying new things can actually lead to worsening the problem. Progress can't be made until the desire to change overwhelms the food fears.
It could make sense if u think about it. Like her friends probably wanted to go out with her and eat something with her but since she wasnt diagnosed officially yet, i assume people find it hard to believe that its a medical condition that she cant control. Therefore probably having them being insensitive and forcing her to try new food. I feel bad for her that she has to go through that and i hope she's doing way better now.
The daughter’s behaviour was only learned by the mother, neurologically, there was nothing that was actually wrong. The mother shouldn’t have given in to her daughter not liking other foods because that is something that all kids do.
I mean yes but i can imagine that she sees herself in her kid and feeling for her. And bc she doesn't want her kid to feel like she did, she's not pushing her kid. Since she herself wasn't understood when she was a kid. I guess she just wanted her kid to feel validated by what she experienced bc she didn't get that as a kid. But that only explains it, jts still a bad way to go with it for sure. But yea. People make mistakes
Actually they were a menu staple here in the Bay Area for several years. They were from a fast food chain called SmashBurger. And they were fried carrots and green beans,,, they were called Veggie Frites. Add a little salt and maybe some catsup and They were really good.
"I dont care whether she likes the food, I just want her to try new things". That's stupid. Give her something kid friendly to eat like a chicken nugget, potato chip or plain rice or maybe some fruit first. Not many people like asparagus or mushrooms, they have strong tastes.
If your 3 year old declares they're only going to eat french fries from now on, the solution is to roll your eyes and continue feeding them other food. Not go 'okay, I guess I'll only feed you french fries from now on'.
To be fair, the mom talked to professionals about it and they were the ones who told her "she'd grow out of it". And then she never did. Although I'll say if it's something that went on for a year I'd definitely do something different.

they know she's sensitive to taste and decide to take her to eat carrots asparagus and mushrooms?? that's a big step I hate the taste of those and so do a lot of people, baby steps would be some simple and food, maybe see if she likes a little cheese with her fries, or other types of French fries from different places and not just the one that she's used to, then let her try some bread, potato chips, mashed potatoes, pasta with no sauce, then add a little bit of sauce, idk man what did they expect? who even eats fried carrots?
Fried carrots aren't too bad. I think they wanted to simulate the smell, this going for deep fry. Carrot when cooked or fried also has a mushy feel, just like potatoes and asparagus. I guess that's why they were going for those foods
Look at her face in the 16:09 frame, she doesn't look healthy at all. Her skin looks greyish and she has dark circles around the eyes, and this is while she is wearing makeup for television. Imagine if she wasn't wearing makeup.
Amber, you have my sympathy. People will only be understanding once it has a lable. That means that for 26 years they blame and guilt trip and trod on your emotions. I wish you strength and happiness.
I’m 100% convinced that if her mother hadn’t enabled her “picky eating” then Amber would have chosen to eat other food rather than suffer the pain of starvation.
@@Yeewen88 right? but why did her mother act like gagging and throwing up would kill her? I bet if her mother introduced her to healthier foods, she’d find some she wouldn’t gag on. She just gave up like that and let her keep eating the fries

I dated someone that had ARFID(avoidant restrictive food intake disorder) years ago. He explained it to me in the best way possible. “Imagine having a plate of vomit served to you, that’s what most food looks like to me.” I thought about that and was able to understand. However, the mother should have taken her to a better psychologist. There’s no way no doctor or psych would “not understand”. My ex’s mom took him to a psychiatric learning center when he was younger and he was able to eat other foods while there. While he’s still a picky eater, he’s able to eat enough variety of food to get the nutrients he needs. Her mom should have done that for the well-being of her daughter, kind of ridiculous she did nothing to help her.
i myself have arfid i eat about 30 foods-new food is really scary and my so called 'picky eating' is really embarrasing like im a teenage with my foodie friends i hate it
I guess if the doctors keep telling you not to worry, she'll grow out of it, then you can see how it got out of hand. But yeah, no way would I have tolerated it in my kids. One of mine gagged every time she tried cabbage but she still had to have some when it was served. One day she just grabbed some raw as I was making coleslaw, ate it, enjoyed it, and never looked back.
You’d be surprised just how much psychiatrists and therapists don’t understand. I have Borderline Personality Disorder and most of them have either refused to treat me or treated me like a joke
@@20bluelilies That's the way to do it. The children must at least have one or two bites of something new. And those new foods need to be served about 7 times before the child will be comfortable eating a full serving. That is how they develop familiarity with new foods. Unfortunately some parents give up too easily, after one or two attempts. Not realizing some kids need many exposures to a new food.
I feel really sorry for her and also amazed that she doesn’t seem like to have any serious health problems eating fries everyday for more than 20 years. But this is such a first world problem 🤷🏼♀️

@Macy didn’t see her father in the video but I would think the same thing applies to him as well. Like i said above it could be a sensory issue but I’ve only seen that in children. Plus if a kid wants McDonald’s(just an example) all the time and you can’t cave in every time they throw a tantrum thats enabling the issue. If the mom and dad left the option open for ONLY French fries to be a choice then that’s on them. Not only that they aren’t caring about the nutritional value in what’s she’s eating. How is she getting fiber and vitamins, nutrients?
ARFID .... after years of fighting for help for my own daughter, who is exactly like this lady and we finally got a diagnosis- ARFID. The amount of medical professionals who told us she would grow out of it, literally couldnt grasp how severe he struggles with eating were made it so much harder. Even with her diagnosis we still have a lot of medical professionals tell us they haven't heard of ARFID before. Hopefully more people become educated to that term.
Have you found probiotics helpful at all? I've heard that when the microbiome is deprived of variety and only received certain foods, it grows extra bacteria for the focus foods, and the bacteria for the rest of the foods dies of starvation, which can give a real physical reaction when those foods are introduced. I'd be very interested to see if probiotics, or slowly introducing small amount of different foods can help repopulate the microbiome.
legit, i eat oatmeal for breakfast and salad for lunch nearly everyday but i still break out more than someone who has only eaten french fries for almost 30 years

I have a similar case to this, but it's emetophobia. I've struggled with it for 4 years and i finally decided to get help, because it's getting out of hand. It has stopped me from trying new foods, eating out, going on rollercoasters, going on boats and airplanes. But i'm getting more comfortable with foods and i'm trying more things. I'm so happy that i'm finally changing and going back to a normal life style. But i believe i can do this! ❤
Emetophobia is one of the strings of ARFID. ARFID is categorised as a fear of foods stemming from a past experience or Fear of vomiting. Interoception issues whereby you don’t feel the cues for hunger and so don’t eat. This also means that volume is an issue, imagine trying to push food you don’t like into yourself when you feel full already, you think you’ll vomit. The the last strand is the sensory issues. People can have a mix of these types and they all feed each other to an extent. My daughter has all three but her root cause is sensory and interoception based, she also fears vomiting because of the gagging and the fullness she feels, plus the sensation of vomiting is heightened for her so she has a fear. It’s very likely you also have ARFID but a lesser extreme. Well done for the advances you’ve made
The way that she is eating them in the car as well, not just three meals a day , and feels euphoric after eating them, seems like this is an addiction.
I thought about this situation! We don't know what she is drinking. She may be scarfing back milkshakes, pop, juice... That would add the extra nutrition to her diet. Or maybe she drinks boost or ensure which is a meal in itself. She DRINKS Something!!!
yeah. i believe eating french fries for around 25 years may have affected how epigenetics behave and probably resulted in sensitive DNA changes. it's more of an addiction and dietary disorder.

Let me guess. They only find this "disorder" in developed countries. Try finding it in a poor country where you don't have the luxury to be a picky eater. Weak minds plus poor parenting are to blame here.
Worst part is the example she set for her daughter. Of course her daughter will eat whatever she wants because her mother believes she has the same "disease" than her.

I think it's unfair to assume the parents didn't try to get her to change. Her genetics test showed her dna is extremely rare. Most kids will eat when they're hungry enough but not all kids. There are some who truly will not eat. I think this mom had to make a choice between letting her kid starve herself to death and giving her the only food she'd eat. Force feeding a kid a food they have this severe a physical reaction to will only increase their anxiety related to the food, ultimately making the problem worse. A common belief is that "if they get hungry enough, they'll eat what they can get." This is not the case for kids with ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). If deprived of their safe foods, they will simply not eat. Kids with this condition can and do end up severely malnourished. In fact, in order for it to _be_ eventually classified, it has to be both prevalent and medically significant enough for the necessary research to be conducted. This process can take quite some time, particularly for behavioral disorders, and even more so if the condition is rare. ARFID didn't make it into the DSM-V until 2013. You're right that "no one had heard of it until then" in the sense that people suffering from it had no name to put to their issues. As evidenced by this very video -- this woman very clearly suffers from it but never received a diagnosis. Other reasons you may not of heard if it before include the fact that it's pretty uncommon, and often gets conflated with picky eating because that's the closest thing most people do know. Additionally, those suffering from it tend to isolate themselves out of shame, particularly before it was recognized as a medical diagnosis. Again, as evidenced by this video.

I highly doubt she’s only eaten fries for 26 years. That’s a complete lack of essential vitamins and nutrients for 2 1/2 decades. She would have been in the hospital by now.
It's not 26 years
Just some guy without a Beard then how long is it then???
@@justsomeguywithoutabeard8563 Title and the show both say 26 years. In the first few seconds of the show they say she’s 29, but has been eating only fries for 26. So, I guess you’re either stupid or a troll or both.
Nahh, she'd be dead without sugar and everything. I highly doubt this
Laur X no way
I prefer the UK version because they work on it for a month and tackle it from different angles rather than just focusing on the food.
She's pushing her eating habits on to the child the child is hearing her say things like that so the child is picking it up from the mother
Exactly. The child is clearly learning from her mom and trying to be just like her in order to show her she loves her, believes her, and is “on her side”.
When the mom eats potato fries for the whole pregnancy, the child automatically likes french fries too
terrible parenting i see
@@-pachamannu1150 lol
Her saying “I would never do this out of choice😭” made me genuinely sad.
Indeed
@iloveyou 3000 yes she really did :( i hope this woman is doing much better now!
Sorry but the parents are to blame for letting this habit develop
Did you not hear the part where they say she has very unique taste buds?
@@timeland8343 yes, but there are ways to work around it and not only limit her to just eating fries.
Yeah but she wont eat anything
@@strollingfawn there really isn’t, she has some sort of sensory disorder with her taste buds. Her daughter is developing it
@@icebeariswatchingyou2327 there is, depending on what type of food she likes and the reason as to why she likes the fries she can get similar food that have the same texture/feelings, there are many ways to work with those who have a sensory disorder :)
The fact that she doesn’t even dip it in a sauce
she can't get enough vitamins and fibres from those French fries how is she still alive???
@Henry Brother the difference is that dog food is made to be balanced and contain all important nutrients in the right amounts. Fries are just a side dish, they will never give you all you need in the right amounts.
Because it's fake lmfao y'all some idiots believe it.
This is fake I guess so
Cause surviving in French fries isn't possible at all! Cause french Fries don't get you the protein and vitamins that Healthy food get
If this would be true then first of all
She would have died or lost her eyesight or be obese

How do people Say u cant be vegan with B12 lacking and french Fries is a vegan food..so no B12 in french fries
Yes, what about vitamin C too ? !?!?!
True, but she has to be getting some sort of vitamins and minerals.
She has a disorder called ARFID which stands for Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. They’re often super tasters which makes them extremely sensitive to certain tastes and textures and have “safe foods”. I’m surprised JJ Virgin didn’t even look at this
This was filmed over a decade ago in 2010 i think. ARFID wasn’t a DSM disorder until the DSM-5 in 2013
SHEESH YOU JUST GOT FACTED
If u are a super taster u cant stomach that much fatty food
When you eat one thing for a long time, you can't stomach another. It's like how vegetarians can't stand real meat after a while.
Let me guess. They only find this "disorder" in developed countries. Try finding it in a poor country where you don't have the luxury to be a picky eater. Weak minds plus poor parenting are to blame here.
2:42 would not eat? Then let her starve.
I feel like this is just parents giving in to fussy kids and allowing them to develop comfort and extreme eating disorders
Worst part is the example she set for her daughter. Of course her daughter will eat whatever she wants because her mother believes she has the same "disease" than her.
Yup. Lazy parents who just want the quickest way for the kid to stop complaining.
Then pretending she's just teaching her daughter "it's OK to be different". No ma'am that's not what youre doing lmao. Gaslighting everyone who tells you you're neglecting your daughter as if they're the ones in the wrong
@Dorothy Zbornak idk about OP but I have 2 kids. This is unacceptable.
I'm sure this mom has been judged so much by other people already...
this series really makes me grateful that my mom never let me go too far or enabled any bad food habits
this isn't just a hobby it's a eating disorder
@@flarfquiet yeah that developed because she was enabled, it doesnt matter if she's miserable and unhappy eating different foods i still wouldnt have fed her nothing but french fries for every meal thats like child abuse
@@thesquad2253 If only it were that simple. She wasn't just 'unhappy' eating other foods, she would literally throw them up.
If proper treatment is not an option, it's better to let them eat their safe foods than nothing.
@@WhitePaintbrush I totally disagree. Until recent years, no one had even heard of this rubbish. The problem today is that people have forgotten how to parent. They take their cues from their children rather than being actual parents. It's having devastating effects on society in all sorts of ways.
@@gardyloo3093 Just because an illness has not been identified doesn't mean it isn't real.
How she’s not obese is beyond me….. 125 lbs of greasy, deep-fried French fries per month. And she has flawless skin???? Must have EXTREMELY good genetics 😭
Bcz she doesn't eat enough protein & for her skin no idea why she is so lucky with flawless skin
Soybean and canola oil is very rich in vit e, a powerful antioxidant, and also vit k.
Because she doesn’t consume sugar. Sugar is seriously worse than deep fried potatoes
@@cestchou Carbohydrates convert into sugar within our bodies. That's why is so important for diabetics to eat low carb diets, w/o the fruits, high carb veggies, and "low glycemic" whole grains, brown rice, and wheat pasta. These all convert into sugar, regardless of how low glycemic they are.
@classicgameplay10 yes but when you heat it it changes the composition. It's only healthy if consumed in an unheated state.
I BET SHES A PRO AT COOKING FRIES!!
Girl, start your own business!!! Making fries 🍟
I cried when she got the diagnosis, it must have been a huge relief to finally know that she was right about having a medical problem, she must have thought at times that it was all in her head.
It was also a mental problem that was enabled when she was developing. The color dyed fries test proved it.
It wasn't a "diagnosis" the test was inconclusive. She had unusual results and like the nutritionist said that gives her a bit of allowance but not all.....
There is nature, nurture and choice and for this chick 2/3 is a learned behaviour of always picking chips. She can change. Being told she has an unusual taste gene is not a free pass to only ever eat fries for the rest of her life
@@sophiefrench4547 Go and rewatch the part that explained it. She has a genetic pattern that does not follow what we expect. This is nature, nurture aspect. Please don't give out made-up stats e.g. 2/3.
No one is claiming it to be a free pass, it's simply important to acknowledge that there is an explanation (not a justification) to this situation.
waste of life
@@carolinem.5044 you go and rewatch it moron. what Sophie typed was exactly correct. it was inconclusive meaning that this person's mental and emotional issues were also part of it. this is what happens when children are not taught to grow up and their stupid behaviors are enabled.

She has selective eating disorder, otherwise known as ARFID. The cause is thought to be from a childhood experience that made them connect food to discomfort or to be genetic. This disorder can be treated by therapy which has been proven to most often help people with this disorder become willing to try new foods.

Honestly, I also wonder if she should see a re-feeding specialist of sorts because her body may actually need re-training on the actual foods. They may be weird to her body as her body isn't use to having them. Also, these "therapists" simply cannot, and SHOULD NOT, expect her to suddenly be so much better in a day or two. She's got 20+ years of habits to break, which is not going to happen in that short amount of time.
