Honestly I feel like leg arms would be such an amazing auto tech teacher because how good he is at explaining things and how patient he is with working on stuff
Easiest way to remember hydraulic hose sizes is dash size is in 16th of an inch increments. So -4 = 4/16” =1/4”. -5 =5/16”. -6 = 6/16” = 3/8” and so on. That’s the inside diameter.
I did a first aid course the other week for work (tree surgeon/arborist). He ended up teaching us about hydraulic injuries. That is no joke!! Good to see you make sure they are tight, basically a pin hole in a finger can fill your arm with hydraulic fluid, which stops oxygen getting to your arm and you end up with what looks like extreme frost bite!! The only way to treat it is to go to the hospital and have a major operation. Stay safe guys 👍🏻👍🏻
@@WelkerFarms the pictures he showed us were horrible. He said to use cardboard to check for leaks and keep your hands well away. But I never heard of it. Good you know about it 👍🏻👍🏻.
The money you guys have saved on sending out for repairs must be over a million dollars! Thank God for Leg Arms, Hollywood and your expertise Papa Welker!
Micheal Bloomberg said farmers aren't very smart. They don't know business very well. You are proof that a farmer is an engineer, a mechanic, a Pharmacist, chemist, irgraminist, truck driver, and certainly a business man, or woman. All around genius comes to mind. Thanks for providing that to us. God Bless you all.
The internal rod gland seal on a hydraulic cylinder is notoriously difficult to install without damage due to its tight location and stiff material. A special tool and method has been devised to make the installation much safer and easy. Using a special three leg pliers the warmed seal is pressed from its round shape to a "W" shape which uses the mechanical advantage of the pliers to shorten the seal just enough to clear the internal bore where the seal must fit. Once the seal is positioned in its groove the pliers are released and the seal pops back into its round shape and mission accomplished without damage. Three leg pliers for this application are available from tool companies sized individually or as a multi-size kit and priced for your needs.
That is a lot better way to pick rocks, especially if you have A/C. I had a Farmall C pulling a hay wagon with an old car hood chained on behind, small rocks piled on the wagon the big rocks got rolled onto the old car hood. Test the hydraulic hose for a leak with a piece of cardboard not your hands. Hope you all stay safe and healthy. Also thanks for explaining how you are doing things, you guys really rock at sharing information. The boys will no longer be living a stones throw away, lol.
I remember when l could watch your videos 2 times a week like clock work. Can't tell you how much l miss those days. I believe l would watch if all you did was talk about the time of day. 😅 The shop work you show is awesome and anything with the Big Buds is golden. God Bless You All !
Good choice in rock picking wagon. Hydraulic is the only way to go. Use a tractor where you can adjust the flow rate. You want it fast enough to give your hyro motor enough power to tose a 100 ib rock or so, but not to fast were it just pounds itself to pieces. When you get good with it you will tose a rock and the reel will only make a half a revolution to pick a rock. Also put a big frame about 2/3 of the way back on the dump basket, and hang a heavy curtain made out of muddlap material. It will keep rocks from being tossed completely over the back of the machine. They put them on new ones.
No such thing as over kill there is only open fore, then cover me whole I reload! So hydraulic lines are measured in 1/16th of an inch, IE 1/2 inch =8/16s
Degleman is a great machine! One addition you might want to add is the apron at the back that stops the stones from being tossed over the hopper. It’s pretty simple and it helps a lot!
The green one I ran for many years would pick up as small as a softball and as big as you could feed through it. Many, many basalt lava rocks removed with that bad boy.
Yes, you need a guard for your drive motor to stop rocks from bashing it. And breaking hydraulic hoses too! Need separate spinner and Dumping hydraulic circuits 8:52
put some lite oil on the hose and fittings before putting the fittings on the hose and then some oil on the outside the fitting before cripping. the hose goes together faster and not has hard to get a good crip. less failures. keep an eye open for a rock rake to windrow the rocks to make rock picking faster and you get more of the rocks out of the field. rock rakes level the ground too
Ah the Ritchie Bros paint job, nice to see the masters of mechanics back in the shop......the highness of hydraulics......the Faro of fabrication......the emperors of improvements,,,,,
The bat teeth look quite worn. Consider cutting some small wedges to weld on to square them up and then hard surface them. When the teeth are nice and square they grab rock like a dream and don't slip over top of them. We built ours back up and works much better now.
that tensioner was also a softener for when the motor starts and stops shock absorber we will see how long it holds together hard working men great stuff
Thanks for another great video Welkers. It was interesting. Thanks to Scott and Bob for showing us the part of the rock picker they worked on. My compliments to you both for your engineering skills. You are doing great on redoing the rock picker. Scott you can fix just about anything I believe. I would have been completely lost trying to figure out what you and Bob did and made it look easy. Great skills both of you have. Believe you will have a nice piece of equipment when done. Thanks again for showing us the building of the rock picker. You all take care and be safe. Enjoyed following along with you both. Totally enjoy my time with the Welkers always. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.
That was informative for sure. Thank you for showing us how to rebuild a cylinder and how to make hoses. By the way, I noticed your funnel drain that you showed us how to build a few years ago. Your Welker channel has been a great asset showing us how to make stuff for around the farm.
Hydraulic number fittings go by 1/16 inch. 1/4 inch is 4/16ths so -4 size. 5/16ths is a -5 size. 3/8 is 6/16ths so a -6 size. 1/2 inch is 8/16ths so a -8 size. 5/8 is 10/16ths so a -10 size. 3/4 is 12/16ths so a -12 size. 1 inch is 16/16ths so a -16 size.
We use a zip tie on the inner seal install. Zip tie the center together, slip the seal down inside and place in the groove then cut the zip tie and slide it out. The seal falls in the groove when the zip tie is cut.
Many years ago, as a teenager, I was raking hay with an Oliver 66. Every time I spotted a rock I stopped and picked it up, and placed it on the platform on the tractor where your feet go. By the time I finished that field, I could no longer use the brakes, because the brake pedals were covered with rocks.
We could only manufacture air and hydraulic pipes at our company. The hoses had to get ordered. Since we made custom builds we could not have hoses on stock. But we had old hoses, that we used for measuring...different lengths and connectors...that way we could already check the position of the hoses and adjust it if required...in the end just note down the hoses that we used and order them.
Pressure relief is the re-set circuit breaker ,to shear pin fuse. Have ya'll ever raised cows/bison/hogs/chickens for meat ,by feeding your seed screenings? Interesting how regions differ in soils. In coastal Ga we have sand but no rocks, except small baseball at about 2 ft deep in areas.
Theres a sweet tool for those pressure seals that folds the seal into a V shap and allows you to drop it into the bore and allows it to unfold into the groove seamlessly... And it never hurts to lap the cylinder with fine Emery cloth! Nice work Gentlemen 👍👍
Always enjoy shop time with you guys. You are quite the fabricator Scott. Thanks for the schooling on hydraulic cilinders Bob. Hope you all had a great thanksgiving 🦃🦃🦃 Stay safe and warm guys !!!
Hi from Australia, we have exactly the same Degleman rock picker. We imported it from Canada. It has done a great job of picking up rocks in our irrigated cultivations. Enjoy your videos.
We use to have a ground drive like that. We looked a getting the covert kit from Dagelman, but traded instead to a Rockomatic with hydraulics. The ground drive, like yours, had four bats. The non-ground unit had three, I think. It was a great machine, this one we have now is also. Like watching you fellas work things out 👍👍
I will say with those rams inspect the collars that screw onto the tubes. I have 2 of them pickers. This spring one decided it didn’t want to work on a Sunday morning so it literally blew the collar off the casing! I know it’s not a common thing to happen but now I pay a little closer attention to that to try and prevent it.
Our rocks in central NY won't go thru that reel. Two to three rocks fit with just straight tines. We left your size rocks for another day. We grow them. Frost is our best friend and worst enemy. The soil gets mellow with deep frost and brings rocks to surface.

Always find your engineering interestingly.
That's a bobbin. (The seal in a double acting cylinder that separates the two chambers.)
You got all kinds of good toys (referring to the hydraulic hose machine). But looks like it would take a long, long time to clear your fields.
You guys can fix anything. Impressive!
Picked a lot of rocks with those rock pickers they work great might need bigger tyres so they don't leave ruts
Spring tensioner instead of a bolt for the chain. My unwanted two cents.
Take a look for manual/design in making a side rake that will feed the main rock picker, speed up picking rocks
Built in Regina Saskatchewan Canada
I think you will want a flow control as well. Unless the flow is adjustable on the tractor hydraulics. Otherwise you should have a much better set up than the old ground drive.
