      Vortec 5.3 engines typically are solid engines. With that said ppl say Zach aka mn millenial farmer has battery bermuda triangle now it seems you guys have engine bermuda triangle lately.

    I'm so thankful I've kept my 02 Silverado Z-71 4×4. Just a simple 5.3 engine, no cylinder delete. I think that's why I'm up to 325,000 miles, original engine and transmission. Drive train has never been out of the truck. I keep all the maintenance completely up to date. Still purring like a kitten. There's quite a bit of rust, and lots of scrapes, scratches, and some dents. It's worked very hard during its lifetime. Plenty of room, very comfortable, and all the options still work, even the power mirrors. Probably have spent more money on it than it's worth, but I love the old girl and I'll keep her rather than get something newer and experience the problems.

    I absolutely love watching you work on engines , my husband would work on them and I would help him. He passed away in 2004 and I have his 1968 Pontiac Firebirds’s 400 convertible and I can’t bring myself to work on it without him . Thank you for letting me watch you.

    My buddy had a suburban with a 5.3 that detonated at 85k miles. He paid a shop to install a remanufactured 5.3 purchased through advanced auto part. It lasted 800 miles and blew up. They replaced it and that engine lasted 100 miles. The remanufacturer tried to bail and not warranty the second engine saying metal must be in the oil cooler. Shop verified everything had been replaced with new parts and sent 2nd engine back so it could be examined. After a couple months they sent a 3rd engine and it run perfectly. My buddy was without his vehicle for one year and cost him over $10k in repairs. He sold it a month later eventhough it ran perfect. Was scared it might blow up again. Total nightmare due to gm gas saving device junk.

      Don't blame GM, it's the Feds that are making the MPG requirements. Now you get a small 4 or 6 cyl with a turbo. I remember when a turbo was "racing equipment" and your insurance company would cancel your policy if they found out you had one.

      @@randyb1890 GM is the problem at this point. They have been making DOD for 18 model years and it’s still broken. Other manufactures are not having these issues, at all.

    A quick tip for you. Pull the rear tires on the lift and you can lower the car about another 6 inches. It really helps us short guys.

    It's actually pretty easy to change valve springs. Get a adapter to put air pressure in the cylinder and they make a tool to compress the valve spring.

    My grandson bought a 2013 Silverado last fall with the 5.3 in it and 130,000 miles. He drove it home and 2 days later, it started misfiring and knocking. Even though there was no warrantee, the dealer said he would take a look at it. Sure enough, because of the Active Fuel Management system, it flattened the cam on #6 and wouldn't open the valves. To the dealer's credit, they said they would put a used 5.3 in it with similar mileage. They got that one in and it had the same problem. So here comes engine #3. It worked. Since then, my grandson has put in the module that shuts down the AFM. He wanted to put in the different oil pump but the dealer would not stand behind the engine then. So far so good.

    JEGS is having a sale on 6.2 long block crate motors - ships tomorrow. Not that difficult if you want to solve the problem with a long block.

    This is why I still have a 7.3 PS 1 ton 4x4 and an F150 300ci straight 6 extended cab for light chores. 7.3 has had 2 cam position sensors at $25 ea and a couple o rings in the injector oil lines. Wife runs a 2009 Tundra 5.7 L made in Texas and it has been bullet proof as well. Just put the second replacement battery in it and an AC compressor last summer. AC repair parts were less than $300 and I was the labor. Not bad for 14 years.

      I have owned several 5.7 Toyota’s, what an engine! I don’t think another V8 touches it for power and durability.

      I had a 300 in my old van. It had an interesting habit of starting, as soon as the key was in the on position. What was happening, is when it was turned off, it still had some fuel in the cylinder. Turning on the key, would fire the plug in the cylinder next to fire, igniting the fuel, and turning over the engine. GM researched this years ago with a starterless engine. Just fire the injector on the cylinder on the power stroke, fire the plug, and the engine would start.

    Other side of the coin on new vehicles. Couple years ago I had a timing chain failure that bent and broke a set of valves in one cylinder in my 2011 Prius. One new piston and rings, two valves, and a timing chain, and the car was back running. That occurred at 250k miles, I’m now pushing 290k. My point being there are manufacturers that still build quality equipment!!!

      I think you and I are the lone soldiers on here begging people to try Toyota or Lexus. I left GM and Ford years ago for Toyota products and have not looked back. My stress level and pocket book are much much happier.

    GM guy here too! 1976 Pontiac Trans Am, 10 years 235,000 miles. 1985 S-10 Blazer 14 years 244,000 miles 1999 Suburban 16 years 385,500 miles 2016 Silverado 1500 7 years 129,000 miles Closing in on my personal Million Miles Driven, all in quality GM products. Great work guys!

      Over 4 million here. 1 ford cabover 3 freightliners 6 Pete's 2 kw's and 4 Volvo's. Volvo definitely the most trouble free

    Don't fret, I fried my 5.4 3V triton with the janky timing setup that is so crucially oil pressure dependent about 10 years ago (2004 MY FX4 bought brand spankin' new) and bought a remanufactured to keep it. Yeah, the truck wasn't worth what the engine cost at that time, but living in the south it's basically rust free, and 8K vs 40K for new made it an easy decision. Truck is still with me and no longer a daily driver, runs great, burns a lot of gas when driven, needs paint next.

    If you have to do Nicks springs, make an adapter that screws into to the plug hole and has a male air coupler. Put air pressure into it. An old time trick used when replacing valve seals.

      Do you think too dead center is enough or will it be too difficult to lift the valve high enough to put the retainer on? I've heard the air pressure trick, definitely will try it!

      @@WelkerFarms TDC may not be high enough to keep the valve up far enough to get the spring retainer and keepers back in place. Using 150 lbs of air pressure in the cylinder is more than enough to keep the valve seated while you work

      @@WelkerFarms If you want to use the TDC metthod, I've used something like braided rope/paracord and pushed it into the cylinder via the spark plug hole. That way when you raise the piston to TDC the rope fills in the void and holds the valve completely closed. I've used both air and rope methods successfully.

      With the air pressure hold, you also need to put a socket on the end of the crank and brace a break over bar against the frame or something to hold the crank in one place. The reason is if you don't get the motor EXACTLY at TDC on the cylinder you are working on, the air hold will spin the crank over. Sometimes it will hold in place at TDC for several minutes, but then all at once it will spin - usually at the worst possible moment.
      That is why the rope trick is usually safer, but more hassle to do. The easiest method is to feed a bunch of rope in with the cylinder part way down in the stroke, then rotate the crank towards TDC until it stops - forcing the rope up against both valves.
      OBTW, racers repair (tig weld) LS heads all the time with far worse damage that you have on yours. A decent pro welder can fix most damage for you, they have the experience to weld up the head without porosity problems. Then machine as normal.

    My sons 5.3 did the same thing his mechanic told him EPA is looking to make it illegal to delete dod systems under federal @ntipollution laws. More government over reach! Really enjoy your families content, hope the rebuild goes smoothly.

    13:31 Leg Arms' comment about "gotta have the piston at TDC" and Nick adding, "- to keep the valve from falling inside" brings to mind a trick used by small engine mechanics - which is to stuff the rope from the pull starter into the spark plug hole and raise the piston. The bunched up rope will hold the valve shut without harming anything.

      If we have to swap valve springs when the head is on the car, we feed shop air with a hose through the spark plug hole.

      I have had very good luck with V8 Toyota trucks and landcruisers. So far Tundra 4.7 372k, Tundra 5.7 280k, 100 series Land Cruiser 282k, 100 series Landcruiser 255k, 200 Series Land Cruiser 110k. Just phenomenal machines.

    My brother just redid his son in laws 2016 Dodge hemi. What a disaster. One of the roller lifters cracked the roller, dumped the needle bearings and rattled line crazy. The heads and block OK. Took four months to gather all the parts to put it back together. Wonderful story about acts of kindness. Special people!😊

    My wife's RX350 broke a valve spring and left her stranded. The valve didn't drop but the keepers were hanging on by a cats whisker. Tore it completely down replaced all 24 springs and a valve along with seals and it should be running next week. She got really lucky. I've seen the carnage on "I do cars" yt channel when a valve drops and it's not pretty.

      I had a Ford that lived up to its name. Fixed Or Repaired Daily. Had it only to 40k miles before got rid of it because it spent more time at the dealership than the road.

    Wife drives a 2021 Denali and it had 9k miles and a similar situation happened to us heading down the interstate. Lost power, weird engine noise, barely made it off the interstate. Turns out it was bent push rods. The GM tech said it was a common issue over a few of the year models on the 6.2 and some of the 5.3 engines. Faulty spring retainers or lifters is what we were told. Frustrating to say the least.

      Good grief, how can GM who brought us the small block V8 those many years ago not figure this out. They have been having these problems now for 17 years!!!

    Scott, in this engine both the intake and exhaust valves are hollow. The exhaust is sodium filled to aid in the heat transfer away from the seat area. The intake valve is hollow solely for the weight advantage.

    The one good thing about this 'mess' is that you have an enclosed shop, lots of tools and, at this time of the year, not too much going on with the farming business. I was a 'dyed in the wool' guy until the 2000s when I got my first Toyota. They have run VERY well for me. Any more though, I think I would go with a Cummins Diesel.

    I had a 08 Yukon Denali AWD that I loved. It had the stupid VVT setup. I deleted that when I put a cam and supercharger on it. Ran like a champ until I traded it. I was lucky it didn't have DOD. I think that was around the time that junk started getting introduced. You will have an extremely reliable vehicle once it's back together. Hang in there!

    Dad's 6.2 was good till he hit 200k now it seems to drop a valve seat every year. And runs exactly how you described every time it does it

    My '07 Silverado 5.3L experienced a DoD failure at 232k miles. One of the lifters collapsed for cylinder deactivation and would not release. I got a special punch that is designed to allow the lifter to release when it is hit just right. I did that, it worked, and I put a cylinder deactivation override device on it and broke off some parts of the VLOM gasket so it cannot build oil pressure and activate the DoD. It's been running great for 3,000 miles, but this truck doesn't get driven that much anymore. It's a chore truck.

      I have an 08 Burning loss of oil. For 2000 and some Repairs it has been good for a year.

    Hey Scott I feel your pain brother, I just had the head gasket, timing chain an timing chain tensioner an 1 cracked manifold repaired on my 01 jeep grand Cherokee limited 4.7l, thanks for sharing
    It's absolutely rediculous how many sensors an vacuum lines vehicles have nowadays, the smallest things like a vacuum leak can hault the vehicle, the vehicle manufacturers make these new cars nowadays so complicated that you have to take it to a shop to get it fixed because it might need a special computer or some kind of specialized tool or something

    Scott, I had 2 valves drop on an engine and am currently rebuilding it. 1 valve was stuck in the piston and the other was wedged in the head. My head had alot more damage to it than yours, but my machine shop was able to locate someone to weld up the damage and reshape the chamber.

    19:06 You can see it's the intake valve (the larger one) which failed (likely due to the intake breathing dirt)- just as Leg Arms had guessed.

    The interesting thing for me is that this happened to both 6.2s. Often when something fails catastrophically on the Internet, people chime in that their engine is fine, the broken engine was built on a Friday, etc. It wasn't a coincidence that both of these engine failed. If it happens to one engine it can happen to all the rest.

    with that air intake boot like that you should have had a lean code setting because of unmetered air entering system after the mass airflow sensor

    I drove a chevy 2500 with a 6.2, great truck, good acceleration, good towing - hauling 12k generator. We did have a few trucks with this problem though. Luckily they were fleet trucks and I didn't have to deal with the aftermath.

    To change the springs without pulling the heads you need to get an compressed air adapter that fits into sparkplug hole and use compressed air to keep the valve up while you change the springs.

    I ended up adding the the module to delete the fuel management DOD on my truck. I’ve heard way to many nightmares about major engine problems.

    First I apologize that I’m logged in under my wife’s account. I’m a 27 year GM technician. Watched the video and want to give a heads up on repairing the block. You can have machine shop bore and install larger piston’s from aftermarket companies. But you have to do all cylinders or you will set codes for cylinder balance issue and have an SES light and remote start will be inoperable. GM had a bad batch of valve springs and issue with camshafts. My boss’s truck broke the valve spring and dropped into cylinder like yours. I have a great machine shop to work with that we figured this out with and wanted to pass on. Great video

      Appreciate the insight! Definitely will have all cylinders bored the same and new pistons for all 8. A good machine shop did this to Nick's 6.2 and it is running great! Except it has the old springs still so we will swap those out after learning about the spring issue. Both vehicles are 2015 models.

    Glad to see some great hospitality! Also, not sure if anyone has mentioned this. Heard a lot of horror stories on the torque converters on these. Check out the Silverado Sierra forums. Since the engine is out might be worth upgrading to a better torque converter without the thin walls. How many miles are on that Yukon? I have a 15’ Sierra with 141k. Considering my options incase of this issue. Thanks!

    I disabled the variable cylinder management system last year on our 2015 honda odyssey. Just replaced the alternator, which oil leaked onto it, and fixed the oil leak. No more engine light. It so satisfying to do the work your self and how much money you save.

    I’m sorry Scott you and your family have to deal with this. I prefer GM, one of my brothers is a Ford nut and the other is a Ram fan. You are correct. They all have their expensive issues. Oh I wish I had my 64, 65 or 68 C20’s back.

    Scott I feel your pain my friend! I have an LML Duramax engine. The CP4 fuel pump internally self-destructed! When it did that, it took out the whole fuel system! OOOUUUCCCCHHHH! You don't want to know what the final bill was. It just broke my heart and my wallet. I can do allot of repairs/work on my vehicles. However, this was above my pay-grade. It took the shop a week to do the work. The parts bill alone was 7.3k! Hang in there. I hope you can salvage the block! All my best to you!

    In January of 2020, I had just got back home from a trip out west to South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and my 2015 Yukon Denali XL 4WD with 150,000 miles on its 6.2 went south due to the cylinder deactivation garbage. Had it rebuilt and that turned off. I now have 183,000 plus miles on it. Love the vehicle and it will be my last one. I have front leveling kit and 1inch level in the rear. It’s got a cold air intake and I run 305/55/20 Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs on it. This set up has been on it since I bought used in 2016 with about 45,000 miles. It was built in 2014 so I lucked out and got the 6 speed transmission for the switch over to the horrible first generation 8speed transmission…My mileage did not change that much, maybe 1.5 mile per gallon. But it’s straight 8 all the time…Will drive it until Jesus Christ comes back, or until my kids have to take my drivers license away.

    I'm a big GM fan also. 2020 Silverado with 8L90 trans was chattering. Read about updated trans fluid in a blue label bottle and it solved the problem. At least for one week . Find out if yours needs it. Full flush 11.4 quarts.
