  • With Bioware revealing Dragon Age Veilguard we have seen a lot of great stuff. Such as the story, world, gameplay and what I want to talk about in this video companions. And Dragon Age Veilguard has some amazing companions designs! Each character is lovingly crafted and I want to go over them! So, lets discuss why Dragon Age Veilguard has some great companions and character design broadly.

      I really like them in the trailer (subtle, natural face movements; distinct looks including signs of aging and past combat encounters), absolutely hated them in the gameplay reveal.
      Both Solas and Varric looked ridiculous and like they had on to many instagram filters (just compare it to 3, where you could even see pores), making the scares and moles Varric has look oddly painted on. Especially since they changed his hair to reflect his aging, but then gave him beauty filter skin. Harding barely looks like she did before, they even gave her a completely different nose, but at least she looks more like an actual person than the other two.
      In regards to Neve I have the same issue I have with a lot of BioWare's female characters: I don't like the way they walk (it always reminds me of how I walked when my scoliosis was at it's worst and I do not need that reminder!). I hope it's Neve specific bc of the prostethic (which would be cool) and not a 'female character choice'

    Really like how you discussed what character designs tell you about the character rather than the ‘are they hot or not?’ debate that everyone seems focused on. In a game like Dragon Age, the characters are there to tell a story, not just look pretty and I would rather have characters who communicate themselves well through their appearance, whether they are attractive or not (I do think this group is attractive; don’t get me wrong). You did an excellent job breaking down what the character designs tell you about each of the companions.
    The only one that I am not sold on at this point is Neve. I think her design by itself is good, but it seems incoherent with the ‘voice of the streets’ characterization that the developers have said that they gave her. I would have thought that her look would be more simple and grounded (plus I can’t imagine tailing someone inconspicuously in that outfit, even in Minrathous). And I would have expected her to remind me far less of Vivienne. But my thoughts may change once I play the game and get to know her better. Great video!

    • @Knight1029
      @Knight1029  2 месяца назад +2

      Thank you. I am glad the video was good.
      I can get just wanting to talk about how hot the companions are but I do think that reduces the discussion a bit. What a character should look like should reflect who they are and what story they are trying to tell. But so many people seem to just want them to be hot. It misses great opportunities for story telling. I like Oghren a lot but I feel if he was design later his look of a drunken dead beat would be gone or reduced. And I think if that did happen something would be lost.
      You make a good point on Neve not looking like she represents the "voices on the ground". Though I think she is meant to be more of the noble echelon representing the people rather than being one of them. That is my interpretation at least. Still a good point that I should have mentioned in the video.
      Again thank you for the kind words and I am glad you enjoyed the video.

    A minor correction: canis means dog, not wolf. And while it's true that "lu" was sometimes used to emphasise that someone/something was young/small it was used as a suffix (es: Augustulus instead of Augustus).
    So I don't think Lucanis' name is meant to give "little wolf" vibes.
    On the other hand Neve literally means snow (and gallus is rooster).
    So basically you have a Luke dog of death and a snow rooster.

    • @Knight1029
      @Knight1029  3 месяца назад +2

      I didn't know that. Thank you for clarifying. Though I do think Lucanis is meant to somewhat parallel some ideas of Solas. Alongside the purple coloring I think there is something.
      That's funny though. Neve meaning snow rooster is just to good.

      the lu part could be closer to italian rather than latin like Canis, lu-canis, lu being a typed out southern italian accent way of speaking
      Roughly meaning "Lu-Canis= The Dog"
      Hes from Antiva wich is basically italy in Dragon Age
      Heres an example i could find:
      "Lu cane mozzeca o secuta sempre lu strazzatu"
      Translation:
      il cane va a mordere o insegue preferibilmente il povero dai vestiti laceri

      @@o.d.d.343 I suppose we'll never know. Well until someone asks them about in an interview that is. Anyway, a reference to ancient Lucania (and the lucani people) seems a bit more likely. Or they just like the name lol. While they took inspiration from real world history and cultures they never wanted to portray them exactly as they are/were (a good thing if you ask me).
      Like tevinterians don't use patronymics (perhaps that's for the best, imagine they called Neve "Gallina" lol), Rivain has at least some parts of its culture not related to Spain, Ferelden isn't exactly England, Tevinter is often thought to be the DA "byzantium" by the fans but the territories they lost centuries ago were not their original homeland, on the other hand however their struggle with the qunari mimics the one between byzantines and truks, ecc.
      Just saying they mix a lot of stories and cultures from around the world (mostly Europe but the pyramids of Par Vollen scream South America), but seems to focus more on the most famous ones.
      So while taking inspiration from a local language (but not the official one) of another country is definetely a possibility, I wouldn't expect them to do it.
      And I can't really blame them.

    This was a great video! Than you for making it. I love character design analysis, it's so fun to break down the elements in a design and see what it says about the character. I think Neve's is my favorite, I love that her color pallet is balanced between having having two prominent opposing colors to the traditional Tevinter colors (black vs white and red vs blue) but also has two colors that still tie her to it(black and gold but lesser of them compared to the other colors). Also her outfit is just so cool I think! I also liked that you took their downtime outfits in to consideration too, it adds a lot to the character even if it's something small.
    I think this dragon age has the the strongest character designs out of any of the dragon ages so far honestly. I think they did a great job with the character design. I also like that they have been pushing boundaries. Even in Inquisition I think they made companions that were not always conventionally handsome or beautiful. Not that they weren't beautiful or handsome, they certainly were, just that they weren't so cookie-cutter which was nice to see. I'm glad they pushed that more in Veilguard. I like that the characters mostly come off as more mature-looking and maybe even a little bit older, also pretty similar to Inquisition which makes me happy.
    I'm not great or technical really with analyzing these things. But maybe Davrin's red/orange and blue also represents a clash of some kind since blue and orange(although it's more red here) are opposites on the color wheel, maybe because he's presumably a Dalish elf which I think is sort of rare even for the Wardens? At least in Fereldan and in Origins, it seemed like that was the case. Things could have changed in the time since then too, though, and we are in a different part of the world now. This point is kinda weak but: It could maybe also point to how he's using a sword and shield, but he also has a little gryphon that he goes into battle with, which is more like a ranger-rogue class back in Origins. Although to be fair I don't know if that's how it's actually gonna work in game or not, but that's how it was in the trailer! But IF that were the case, I'd think it'd be blue and green or something like that, not necessarily blue and red, but it's just something that came to mind.
    Neve's blue/white could, in a more on-the-nose way, be a nod to her ice magic as well. But I don't have anything else on that XD
    In the trailer, there's a little bit of red on Lucanis' cloak, on the back although it's hard to see, which could be a nod to his assassin capabilities. Also on his tarot card, there's a bunch of "eye" looking things behind him, that also look like feathers, which could be a peacock, or something more sinister (or both?)! If it is a peacock, they can represent many things, but vanity, pride, and confidence can be a huge part of their symbolism. That and the fact you mentioned his name translates to "little wolf" is quite... intriguing.

      @Knight1029  3 месяца назад +6

      Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the video.
      I do like that there is a range of different types of designs. I think what is good about it is because they are a lot more considered. In DAO it seems the idea with character design was "What's the first thing that pops into my head about this character?" That's not bad but it does mean that the character designs are not as fully thought out. In DAV's character designs it seems that their are so many layers to them. You mentioned that the blue/white colors for Neve also represent her ice magic which I completely forgot about. Her design has so many different layers of meaning. Its great!
      The only way to get better at analyzing is by doing it. A lot of what you should focus on is does the design achieve its goal. Like does Cassandra look like "queen of the vampires". And how you know that is by thinking of all the colors, shapes and iconography associated with that idea.
      You do make a good point about Davrin. I do think he must be a Dalish elf because all the elves with tattoos have been Dalish. From DAO to DAI. All of the elves we meet with tattoos are Dalish. And looking more into the meaning of orange has a couple of meanings one of them being purification. Which makes sense with him being a warden. I should have mentioned that.
      Nice point on Lucanis' tarot card. Eyes in Dragon Age have always been associated with the pride demons. Since they have many eyes. It reinforces the idea that Lucanis may be prideful.

    I really like the diversity we are getting in terms of companions. Like finally a Dragon Age Game that nails black hair styles instead of just giving us the cornrows and short hair. I love that we can get black and Asian coded elves in the game as well. Ever sense Inqistion they just been adding more and more black humans into the game like Vivienne and tons of NPC, So I am happy to see they triple downed here and are showing us more diverse ethnicity's, races, and body types. The biggest problem with Dragon age origins and 2 is that they tend to make all the humans white and the non-humans ones non-white like with Sten, Fenris and that one elf from awakening. So I am happy to see them keep moving away from that fantasy trope. I mean of course people are gonna scream woke and be angry about this stuff, but this really makes the world feel more immersive and larger than any other dragon age game in terms of world building if they do it right.

Even in DAO their was way more non-white characters than not. I remember distinctly thinking "Just random non-white NPCs? Don't see that to much in a fantasy game."
