Three Choices From The Previous Games Will Matter in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Dragon Age Veilguard has been really great so far. But an interview with, Bioware Creative Director, John Epler has revealed one of the more disappointing aspects of Veilguard. The fact that only three of our choices in the previous game will be carried forward. So, join me as we discuss this.

    It's such a bad faith argument to say that the only thing people have to complain about is "woke, politics, & pronouns." There are a plethora of valid and extensive criticisms about this game. To say "people say Dragon Age bad . . and they don't have any arguments for it," is just being willfully ignorant. To discard someones opinion because they don't fully dissect every single frame on screen, doesn't mean you are critically thinking either. When the credits rolled on DAI, the next DA game was all I wanted. In the past 3 months, any interest I had has completely flatlined, crashed and burned. And it's for so many reasons that has nothing to do with pronouns. But to call that character creator "the most inclusive" is utter bullshit. Inclusive, unless curves. lol

      @@Knight1029 Sorry, dude. 10 minutes in, and all you kept saying is that no one has any actual complaints or valid criticisms. Here's some of mine, off the dome real quick: Art direction, wildly diverging from previous games. Ugly HUD heavy UI. Floaty looking, spongy "action combat" with shoddy companion AI. The entire plot of the game diverging from the incredible sequel hook, that everyone wanted; shift of focus from an epic, nuanced and complex villain that was built up in the prior game, with world ending stakes, to instead focus on a cast of quirky colorful characters. The fact that the game has been in development hell for 10 years, and apparently changed direction at least 3 different times. That they put out the first trailer that was so off the mark from what anyone wanted, that they have since been over-correcting by showing off so many spoilers from the game ever since. And in my opinion the final nail in the coffin, that no decisions will matter except for 3. Completely discarding the main promise of the franchise, about choice and consequences, and a world shaped by character choice. Does that mean every single choice had to have some wildly branching outcome? No. Previous games primarily resolved this through alternate lines of dialogue or codex entries; swapping cameos; and in few instances of major choices, fairly significant changes. For them to NOT prioritize this aspect of the series in any way, in fact to blatantly discard it, is just such a slap in the face to the fans of these games. The amount of effort that would have to have gone in, to eliminate any reference to variable world states at this point, to homogenize everything, and avoid mentioning significant aspects of the world, to not contradict any player canon, makes the world smaller, not bigger. How can you bring Morrigan back, but not care if she was romanced by the warden? Or if she was a mother? Or if she drank from the well? What is the actual point of making a Dragon Age game, when you are literally discarding the history. Just make some mobile action dating sim, at that point, clearly it's what they wanted.

      @@Keyatzin its cool. I just wish people would actually listen to what I am saying and not what they think I am saying. My biggest issue with the Dragon Age series is the inconsistency of the franchise. To be clear this issue I have is not the writing, not the lore or characters. Its the inconsistency of combat and art style. I think the series is true to its core but those surface level details matter in showing a consistent identity. All the Dragon Age games are the same where it matters but lacking that surface level consistency makes them feel less like each other. DAV on its own has an amazing art style and combat. But in conversation with prior games the issue is that it isn't building upon what was done before. Other points I wish to say is that I don't think DAV's art style is "mobile" that just seems like a buzz word thrown out to have another word for bad. Compare DAV to DAO's characters. They are not the same but they are similar. If DAV is mobile game then so is DAO. I am not a fan of the UI because I feel like it could have been more tailored to the game. I don't think it looks bad but it could have been better. The story direction is fine. Solas is still present in the game but now is someone we can talk to instead of someone we see talking to us. Him being a companion means he has to be used differently. What made Solas interesting was us interacting with him like a companion. And how they did it retains that. Additionally, Solas isn't out of the game yet. Solas could likely be lying and waiting for his opportunity to strike. The other gods would attack him first for obvious reasons. But if they believe he is out of the picture then they wouldn't care. The story direction is fine. Also the strongest part of Bioware games have been their ability to tell stories through characters. It is what made ME2 so successful and what made Anthem feel like the least like a Bioware game. Focusing on the characters is a good thing. I do agree that the spoilers have been odd. I made a video about it where I do agree they should stop it. I also dislike that Bioware has basically made only three choices from the prior games matter. It sucks. It really does. Will that make a bad game? No, it will definitely effect it but it won't make it worse. Was Fallout 2 a worse game because it canonize the Brotherhood of Steel ending? No. And what Bioware is doing isn't that. They are simply not mentioning our choices in the next game. Its not good but its fine. Why they did this is reasonable. They want to have a high amount of reactivity and the only way to do that is limit the amount of choices they have to carry over. An issue that all Bioware games will have to face at some point is when will the game stop being about telling a story and start being about showing off our choices? I think that's fine but that should be the end of a franchise. Where the last game is only about showing off our choices. If Bioware did this with a new franchise that would be fine. New expectations and all that. But doing it with the fourth game of Dragon Age where all the prior games carried over our choices? That isn't great. If it was up to me I would have sacrificed that reactivity they wanted for those one of lines and cameos.

      @@Knight1029 To me, it's not the art style that screams Mobile game, but the UI. It wasn't until I saw recent footage of them interacting with a vendor in the game, (which also, why is that part of the marketing?) and it popped up these big glowing icons, my brain was expecting an unskippable ad to pop up. Art Style wise, I always look back at DAO as having placeholders, and yes, being ugly. But DA2 is where they really established the look; the different races had distinct features, I don't know why they've gone away from that. And the enemy designs are just . . lacking. To me this game looks like it has been hopping on trends for the past 10 years of development and it has no identity of it's own, just this frankenstein'd skeleton from whatever survived the cutting room floor. I won't be surprised if it also heavily features Marvel-esque quippy dialogue and jokes to kill every dramatic tension. Absolutely the best parts of Bioware games were the world building AND the characters. And the most compelling hook of this game was, Solas, this companion from the previous game, that we have a connection to and backstory with, being the main antagonist. That was such an exciting premise; especially for the DA series where every game places you in a new protagonist, so while the player has this connection, they can roleplay it very differently. It's just such an exciting concept and they pushed it aside with the name change. And what they have presented as the focus instead is not nearly as interesting. Of course there were always going to be new and interesting characters as well, that was meant to be a given. But the draw was always the cliffhanger from the prior title. And whether Solas would be stopped or saved. Fallout is not a valid comparison for this. Every single Bioware franchise has carried over choices from prior installments. Hell, Kotor 2 carried over more than 3 choices and it wasn't even made by Bioware. But Dragon Age, made the promise to fans, that your choices would carry through, and you would see them carried forward. not every choice, of course, and sometimes there were retcons, sometimes it was minor cameos, or codex entries or alternate lines, but it added immersion and replayability. And their excuse "the other games were in the south" doesn't hold up to the slightest scrutiny. Not when Weisshaupt and the Fade, and Tevintor and Morrigan are prominently featured. Major decisions were made regarding the gray wardens, who came out of the fade, and who stayed behind has been the source of rampant speculation and theories for 10 years. It was a dangling plot thread clearly meant to tie into the next game, and now it just doesn't matter? Dorian and Iron Bull, their status with the Inquisition, whether they were recruited, kicked out or killed, or if they are in a romance, doesn't matter, when they were potentially both going to Tevinter. Talk about a perfect opportunity for a Gay/Bi relationship that most fans would be happy to see. But I guess they won't even cameo since they can't have any established history. I guess the Qunari plot just doesn't matter either? Trespasser teased a major invasion plot in the north. Again, not every choice has to feature in every game, and they don't have to be huge. But if they didn't want to put the work in to flesh out the choices that would clearly be relevant they shouldn't even be making the game. I think from what I've seen of the gameplay it looks mid. But I've never been into these games for the combat. Now knowing that nothing is carrying forward, that all those plot threads that we have been waiting to see some resolution to for so long, they're just irrelevant . . I have no interest left. I'm just mad. I'd honestly be less insulted if they just canonized the World State from the novels, rather than trying to ignore or hide everything that might contradict something, at least then there could be a fleshed out world.

      @@Keyatzin the UI design in general doesn't look like a mobile game to me but the shop interface does look like those of Destiny or many live service games. I can agree on that. But again the issue isn't that its bad but that it doesn't take the opportunity to look like itself. That's an interesting take. I never heard people refer to Origins art style as "placeholder". I respect that take. As for why they shifted from DA2's art style; Origins fans. They disliked DA2's art style and made a fuss about it to Bioware. Causing them to change it. Which I think is sad. DA2's art style gives Dragon Age a look of its own. From what I have seen and heard DAV doesn't have anything like Marvel dialogue. It has quipy dialogue that is common in Dragon Age. I just don't see how the game's story direction is worse then what we have now. I just don't see it. My reason in bringing up Fallout was to say that what Bioware is doing is fine. I was not comparing them one to one. Would it have been better to have our choices carry over? Yes. Is the game made worse for not doing that? No. It sucks. It really does but I don't think the game will be worse for it. There are obvious things they should address and I agree them not addressing it is bad.

    I've been thinking of this a lot. I've been bouncing between having this really irk me and then not caring. I think it helps that DAV will be set in Tevinter. It kind of makes some choices from DAI not need to be focused on so much. The one thing that bugs me the most is leaving out who is Divine. I feel like at least some NPCs would gossip about whoever the Divine is, especially if it's Vivienne. I kind of saw this coming when I first finished Trespasser. Whoever is Divine changes so many things. I thought for sure they would end up canonizing whoever it was. I would have preferred that over it not being mentioned at all. (And I know a lot of people would disagree with me on that lol but it's how I feel). If there will be another game after DAV idk how they will approach it. I guess it's something to worry about for later.

    • @Knight1029
      @Knight1029 2 дня назад

      That is one of the benefits of canonizing a choice. We can actually see the full consequences of that choice and not have it be barely mentioned or have all the choices end in the same outcome. And I do feel like that is something Bioware should do. At least with big choices. I do wander how another Dragon Age game would be after DAV. It will be interesting if there is another game.

    If the inquisitor and morrigan werent confirmed to play a big role I wouldnt be as disappointed but whether or not Morrigan has a kid and if she or the inquisitor drank from the well seem like choices that could play a big role. Plus, this has been touted as the biggest threat to Thedas and I find it impossible that the north wont get involved in any way to help. That the divine wont send support or that there wont mention of the race and gender of the Hero of Ferelden in weisshaupt. Like even just a simple "She was a hero, or he was a hero, i wonder where he went, or i wonder where she went" just something to let players know your choices still matter

    My thoughts on this are that Bioware are not being entirely honest. I strongly suspect that the real reason for this is because the game was initially coded as a multiplayer-only, horde mode looter shooter which then had to be quickly re-worked into a single player ARPG after Anthem's failure. This provided very little time, scope or ability to carry over choices from three previous games as the devs already had enough on their hands reworking the game into a single player game. I don't blame the devs for this, they're at the mercy of 'creative executives' from EA who make these kind of decisions - but I would far prefer them to be honest about it. That said, I doubt most of the choices made in Origins, DA:2 or even Inquisition will matter a great deal. This game is set thousands of miles away in distant Tevinter, and whether or not you allowed Jowan to live, romanced Fenris, or sided with the Mages won't have any bearing on the scenario which features a different land, and different characters. If we have the 'in-game' based choice system similar to KotR2 you described I'd have no problems at all, in fact I'd actually like that, as it's a more organic system. Time will tell.

    • @Knight1029
      @Knight1029 2 дня назад

      Well funny you should say that; EA used helping Anthem (which it did need help) to reboot DAV into a live service game. It had you playing with other characters and the story itself was there but small. It wasn't until 2021 where they pushed back against EA and turned it into a single player, offline, no microtransaction game. So, you aren't off on that. It is clear the consequences of it being a live service game at the beginning but it is good that they pivoted to the game we have today. So, you were right about that! I got the information from an IGN article : za.ign.com/dragon-age-dreadwolf/201462/news/how-bioware-finally-got-dragon-age-to-the-finish-line-after-a-tumultuous-decade Its an interesting read. I do wish they were honest about it though. People won't like it but it is important to just be honest about it. I do hope what was implied by Bioware that we are gonna get a Kotor 2 style thing.

    I was really disappointed to hear about the 3 choices thing. So many issues… favoring possible new players over the core fans has always rubbed me the wrong way. It also doesn’t make any sense as the games have always had a default world state to choose if you are a new player. Nothing confusing about it! Like DAI brought loads of new players (and resparked my interest in the series), did incredibly well, AND had the DA Keep choices feature. The flippant “one off lines and cameos” seems like PR speak. Another red flag was that the people who got to preview the game seem to have not known the 3 choices was a thing… as in it was intentionally hidden from them so they could give glowy first impressions and basically sell the game to their followers. This is reeeeeaaaally underhanded. Like studios that hide bad features or microtransactions till the last minute (this literally happened to me twice lol) to get as many sales as possible. Not a good look. On a personal note I feel very tossed-to-the-side as an old fan. I replayed DA2 and DAI last year and actually been itching replay DAO before the new one comes out… for funsies and kinda a preparation for the new one. Honestly just kinda bummed out now. Like I know I will still get the game eventually cuz I have heard it is really fun, but just uuuuuuggghhh.

      @Knight1029 4 дня назад

      I can get the frustration. And I am not trying to say anyone who feels like that shouldn't. But I just want to straighten a few things out. The decision wasn't informed by wanting new fans over core fans. It certainly is a desire that Bioware wants new fans but the decision to have three choices wasn't because of that. It was simply to try and have DAV contain more reactivity and better tell its story. Games that carry over player's choices will inevitable face the issue that future games will simply be about showing off the player's choices and not telling its story. That is fine but I feel like it should be relegated to an end of franchise game. What Bioware is doing is well intentioned. As for the "The flippant “one off lines and cameos” seems like PR speak." I just don't see how it is like that. Sure Alistair, Loghain, Stroud, Hawke and others like that are more than just "one off lines and cameos" but most are. And it is fine to want to have it be more than that. The people who played the previews knew. Many content creators came out after the reveal and said they knew about it and were disappointed with it. And Ghil Dirthalen said in her podcast that was her most disappointed thing on DAV. They knew and some even spoke about it. Again, it does suck. It honestly makes the hype around the game less. And Bioware shouldn't have done that. I just wanted to clarify a few things.

    There are definitely valid criticisms long time fans like myself, the biggest right now is laziness of ditching the Dragon Age Keep and only keeping 3 major choices from inquisition even despite bringing back Morrigan. Some smaller issues might be concern I can't make a character that looks like me due to reduced butt, breast size, and curvy hips seems quite limited.

      The three choice limit is not a "laziness" issue. If Bioware were lazy they would have never fought against EA to change DAV from a live service game to a single player, offline, no microtransaction game. The reason for the change was as John Epler said. To try and use those choices for better consequences and have DAV contain better reactivity

    Dialogue wheel has advantages that normal dialogue option don't. They are both good for curtain games but for a fallout game a dialogue wheel would never work. You need to design a game story around the concept of the dialogue wheel rather than design the dialogue wheel around the game its intended too. For mass effect for instant. shepard is his own character, he is not a nameless hero that is intended to just represent the PC, he has personality that the dialogue wheel is built upon. However DA:O character is intended to be exactly the PC no more and no less and therefor require alot more details into what that character says otherwise it creates a disconnect between the PC and the player. in short don't design the dialogue wheel for the game, the design the game around the dialogue wheel.

    • @Knight1029
      @Knight1029 4 дня назад

      As I said in my video the dialogue wheel is just a UI element and that is it. You can accomplish what a dialogue list can do with a dialogue wheel. Its just a UI design and doesn't actually inform anything. The reason a dialogue wheel is used is for cinematic purposes. As was said in the early showcase for Mass Effect. The only real difference between the dialogue list and dialogue wheel is clarity. And that can be accomplished by a dialogue list with icons and colors. Not saying what you are trying to say is wrong just that both UIs can do the same thing. The issue with Fallout 4 is that it didn't understand what Fallout should do with dialogue.

They have a lot of power when it comes to recruiting whoever they want. The Right of Conscription is something that many people take issue with. And what the wardens did in DAI was bad. Now does that all wardens are bad? No, the wardens in DAI were tricked. Their devotion to stopping the Blights were used against them. Turning their noble ideas into something sinister. (Maybe i have become too old) And then, at some point, you were attacking and murdering the wardens, all of which felt such a waste and left a bad taste in my mouth. They all suddenly started hearing the Calling. Not just a few, not just a lot, but all of them. That would cause them to think and behave irrationally. Which leads them open to being manipulated. And as for us killing them; they were either demon possessed grey wardens or saw us as the enemy, due to the manipulation. I just don't see what happened as bad writing.

    despite its faults, DA Inquisition did have lot of lore to it. Both written and verbal. Masses of genuinely interesting histories and evocative myths. If only they had based the new DA to all these stories, it would have been epic, because that lore is a gold mine of brilliant set pieces and yarns. But it looks like lead writer of Veilguard is typical narcissistic nutter in that they think they can write far better fantasy than anyone else. So they just ignore what has been written before, and flood us with asinine stories that sound like they were written by a twelve year old, and not very bright twelve year old at that. When people like that write games (or tv shows like happened with Acolyte) the end result is always cringe mess.

    This is clearly an utilitarian choice no matter how BioWare insist is an artistic choice. The game had a four years-long troubled development and BioWare was not in the mood to take into consideration the events of past Dragon Age games when making Veilguard (plus Veilguard began as a Live-Service game, meaning that the writers were told to write a single worldstate for all players). While I always expected Veilguard to take just a few world choices from past games, I didn't expect that they would only take Trespasser's final choice which is if the Inquisition disbands or becomes part of the Chantry as the only choice that matters in Veilguard. I at least expected that Morrigan having the Old God soul, the three big choices from Inquisition (Who rules Orlais, If the Grey Wardens were recruited and who is the Divine) to be taken into consideration but that seems not to be the case, which is incredibly infuriating.
