I’ve never been able to sufficiently explain to people why Varric is my favorite DA character beyond him being so likable and charismatic. This video wonderfully articulates all the deeper reasons for why he’s a great character.
I think the "Until We Sleep" comic adds a whole new layer to how tragic Varric and Bianca is when he's trapped in the fade. He says, "The only Solace I had was a certain Lady Friend, and even that didn't work out in the end." His sadness around his unrequited love overpowers the Fade's attempts to keep him trapped.
I have NO delusions that Veilguard is going to be a bittersweet experience. We're going to lose some amazing characters, but their sacrifice is going to be incredible!
Ahhhh Varric, our reliable, ever present charismatic dwarven bestie. Someone who strives for the happy ending of simple pleasures (good friends, a messy tavern, and stories abound both yours and others) even if reality seems to refuse it at every opportunity. I hope Varric does get his happy end, this video served as a good reminder of the absolute metric tonne of capital H history he's had a front row seat to, and how he's had to adapt and survive accordingly. His charismatic mask making him appear an almost static character, but to me, that mask always seemed painfully fragile the more and more stress he built up as your video detailed. Now that Bianca has been taken from him, i'm fascinated by what direction his character will evolve (especially with the absence of the World state, a very questionable choice for returning characters, but I digress). Who is Varric without Bianca, who I consider less of a weapon and more of a shield, an emotinal crutch Varric needed to cope with the unfairness of the world that seems to only take from him and the people he loves. I'm positvely rubbing my hands in delight, and will probably cry a lot when the inevitable tragedy come to play with our favourite dwarf once again.
Of all the companions in the Dragon Age series I've always found Varric to be the most relatable. Sadly, thanks to a probable spoiler in one of the IGN reveal videos I find myself forced into hoping none of his recent novels ended with a cliffhanger.
Aww, our favorite parentified second child with attention seeking tendencies and broken heart. Who wouldn't love him? I didn't know that about his mother, but it would explain why he never gives up on his friends, no matter how much he had to suffer from or for them. Like spending a fortune to protect Merril, or enduring brutal interrogation for Hawke, or walking up to mad god in the eye of magic storm with almost naive believe he could talk him down. Children of alcoholics often develop this warped understanding of love, where abuse and neglect mixing up with affection, making them feel way to comfortable in chaos. I wonder where he will go from here. It's been confirmed he survived prologue and will be alive, although a bit incapacitated, for at least first act. I'm curious what reflections this time would bring him.
Oh, yeah! I was relieved when I saw his icon on the map in the Lighthouse 🥹 You summarised it beautifully about how he might experience love. It's sad and at the same time if he has someone who REALLY cares for him it would spook him as he won't recognise the behaviour as genuine love. It would feel suffocating while he is always the first who helps others and protects them. Oh, our poor Varric 😭💔 I really hope he will retire. I need him to grow old and even more grumpier 🤣

I loved 'demon may care'! This was a wonderful analysis of a character who I realize I hadn't really thought all that deeply about very often. I knew a lot of his backstory, but with having it spread out over two (soon to be three!) games set in such different situations it's hard to pull it all together. The literal and figurative 'weight' of crossbow-Bianca coming off his back thanks to Solas could potentially liberate him, but I'm afraid it will be more likely to bear down on him even more oppressively. He's carrying so many regrets, and with that being such a significant theme of Veilguard, watching him go through the fallout of it all is going to be hard. I hope our Rooks can help him, even if it's just to make some measure of peace with himself.

On the note of unreliable narration from Varric: I've seen a theory, that everything we see in da2 is perceived through his pov and that's why everything looks the same. That's how I've always looked at DA2, makes the repetition easily overlooked. Works of the 'waves' of enemies too - Varric is just exaggerating street brawls into 4 people taking down an army; also, the reason all the qunari look identical, he's just saying 'then the qunari did X' unless it has to do with the Arishok (Darkspawn can be included here as well, until an ogre pops up).
I had so much fun in comments on this channel, but sadly now I must leave, because of the common pessimistic and sad mood of the peoples, that started to influence my own mood. I'm excited for DAV and want to stay so regardlessly. I will return in month to see all your happy, beautiful, satisfied faces and to discuss new lore bites etc.♥️

I try, but I still don't understand. I will criticize DAV after release, i'm sure, it's combat and facial animations, and maybe story decisions about Solas and Inquisitor, who knows. But not now. @@YurateYurate I see what you mean. It's the modern journalism that raised the bar for poor games that now it seems like the rating above 50% is a bad mark. I'm not a journalist, though haha. I've been saying that this game is 6.5 for me for a couple of months tbh. Probably, you missed it. The art style and combat style play a huge role for me when it comes to 10 out of 10 games. DAV changed a lot. I can't give 8 or 10 to something that I don't know. However 6.5 leaves room for getting pleasantly surprised. It might lower your mood when you read something from the opposite opinion, especially when it's written with a particular rudeness. I wish it didn't hurt you much. From experience, I can tell you that what's going on in the comments here is very soft compared to what usually happens haha. The reality of life is that both worlds live simultaniously and we have no control over it. The game is good and bad at the same time :) It doesn't mean we can't try to play it with curiousity. Fantastic video. Varric's been an easy favourite in the series, easily outstripping Alistair in the lovable jokester category. Going into Veilguard, I can't see myself playing in any way that ends with his death, unless it is the utmost ultimate sacrifice. I can't see why any of the writers have ever wanted to get rid of a unreliable narrator with such a strong backing in not only companionship to the player characters, but also one seemingly so adored by the fanbase.

Gaider where he said they have a plan for five parts plot, and although they deviated a bit here and there, it still going the same course. Sure he long gone from the studio and many things could have changed, but I like to think we may still see more Dragon age beyond DAV.

DA2, he states when comforting Hawke after Leandra's murder that he started telling stories to him mom while she was sick and Bartrand was trying to keep the family afloat. It's just rare as usually the person who comes to comfort Hawke is the romance interest
Considering BioWare fired the person that wrote Varric in DA2 and DAI and their push to sweep the previous games' narrative under the rug in order to have a clean slate I highly doubt Varric is going to last long in DA4 and IF he does I don't expect much from him.
We shall see. Unfortunately, all huge dev studios fire people these days. The only thing we can do is to support independent and indie studios if we want to have the games we like for 100%. Have you supported anyone recently?

Varric and Bianca were forced apart by dwarven politics and she was married off to someone else, but they still meet up in secret from time to time.
It happens so rarely though :( As he said, he's not even sure that they are together. At least that's what I understand from his words...
I never read the comics but from what I saw in Inquisition, it is a very Toxic relationship and Bianca is no good for him.

DA2, he states when comforting Hawke after Leandra's murder that he started telling stories to him mom while she was sick and Bartrand was trying to keep the family afloat. It's just rare as usually the person who comes to comfort Hawke is the romance interest

Considering BioWare fired the person that wrote Varric in DA2 and DAI and their push to sweep the previous games' narrative under the rug in order to have a clean slate I highly doubt Varric is going to last long in DA4 and IF he does I don't expect much from him.
Andromeda prepared us for this, they copy paste certain plots and story beats between DA and ME.
That person was fired AFTER they finished their work on Veilguard.

We shall see. Unfortunately, all huge dev studios fire people these days. The only thing we can do is to support independent and indie studios if we want to have the games we like for 100%. Have you supported anyone recently?
