Tempest 2000 is known for its techno soundtrack by Imagitec Design, Inc. in redbook audio format across a variety of platforms. However, the MS-DOS version has optional AdLib/Sound Blaster music that can be enabled in the configuration program. I’ve decided to make it available here. (I also would like to note that the DOS version also has MT-32 music, and that maybe someone with a real card could also make it available some day.)

I've decided to name the tracks that were variations on the CD tracks accordingly while leaving original tracks untitled. Enjoy.

Wow, Mind Eye (The first song) gives some kind of Genesis feel with the drum beats (Streets of Rage anyone?).
Also it sounds good.
Necrocomment necroresponse, Genesis also used a Yamaha FM synth chip, just with an onboard 9-bit DAC, LFO and a few other quirks, along with the old multi-waveform chip from a master system. So they sound similar because they operate on the same technology.
Glad to have found this in a Goodwill a few years back. Totally worth it.
This soundtrack reminds me quite a bit of Street of Rage.

WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME THIS EXISTED
I have a real MT-32! Point me to a place where I can get it and I'll record the soundtrack tonight!
Holy shit, this was quick. I'll send you a message in a bit.
Man, Mind's Eye sounds fitting for a title/attract screen.
This is somehow incredibly charming to listen to.
Awesome work as always, Anatoly :)
Sweet!
Thanks for sharing this! Love the good ol' Soundblaster.
For a minute I thought this was a game for the Megadrive
30:22 What a gem
I have an MT32. I'll have to record it sometime....
I know this is an old comment but PLEASE record it when you get the chance! Thank you for taking the time to read this comment. Have a wonderful rest of your day.
@@ThatWeirdGuyYouKnow I know I'm late to the party, but I just recorded the MT-32 soundtrack on a real setup. I'm in the process of cropping the tracks right now ... expect the soundtrack to be uploaded to my channel soon-ish
@@1337Shockwav3 Hey no worries. Thanks for letting me know. Very cool.
I heard the MT-32 version and this sounds better.
It all comes down to personal preference. MT-32 is unique in a sense that you didn't hear this kind of music out of an 80s MIDI device. And it's a cool implementation considering the limitations of technology. I personally enjoy all 4 versions of the soundtrack. The original Jaguar tracker songs, the reworked CD soundtrack, and both exclusive DOS chip & midi renditions.
music by Ian Howe, is he related to Stewe Howe from yes?
I wish. That would be awesome!
Tempest is the best game of Atari Jaguar (like Alien & Predator)
MT32 emulation now works quite well in DOSBOX SVN (DOSBOX SVN DAUM) and the music of this game sounds interesting
If it sounds like clanging pianos it's wrong. This soundtrack uses a lot of custom instruments. I have a real MT-32 and, after patching DOSBoX to send sysex more slowly, I was blown away by the music when I finally got it working.
It sounds okay right now in Munt, but I would love to hear some recorded from the real thing.
Here's what I just recorded using Munt. How does it compare with the real thing? dosnostalgia.com/files/temp2kmt32new.mp3
That's very close. Some of the filter effects are slightly off, though. I only have the demo version, so I can't record the full soundtrack. If I can find the time sometime I can record the 2 tracks that are part of the demo.
@@dosnostalgic If you can tell me your process for recording the tracks (can't/don't wanna play through the full game) I can give it a roll.
The MUNT rendition sounds good on it's own, but considerably off the original. Mind's Eye has an extremely "acid" feeling on real hardware.
Do the original tracks in this port have names?
I believe that the original *original* songs from the Jaguar game had alternate titles before being released on CD, only some tracks from Tempest X3 on PS1 have names?
No names.
Question, is Tempest 2000 officially abandonware?
Kazuo1G There's no such thing as officially abandonware.
Kazuo1G - Supposedly, Hasbro (when they owned Atari between the ST/Jaguar years and when Infogrames bought it) gave up all rights to their Jaguar properties and even gave away the encryption key so any new games could be freely made for it, so any Atari-owned Jaguar games are free to share. Not sure if that extended to Atari Interactive PC games.
Also please respond: how'd you rip the music from the game?
Never mind, you can rename any .alb and .rld file to tune09.alb (and .rld for mt-32 music), replacing the old one, and enabling it to play uninterrupted on the start screen.
Yep, that's what I did.
@@dosnostalgic Thanks for confirming ... I just recorded the MT-32 soundtrack the same way.
URNTULL....
Is it a dosbox recording?
Yes
this sounds off from what i remember. was this done with a real adlib/sb card?
+zaphod77 No, this is emulated.
I hd a real sb in my machine when i played this in dos and minds eye sounded a LOT better on it. i'm not sure how to get what i heard back.
@@dosnostalgic I think this is one of those tunes that sounds different on an sb 16/awe versus an sb/pro. Supaplex is a more well known example. In this case, i''m pretty sure it was the sb16 that the tune was made for. please try on an emulated sb16
THIS is how it's supposed to sound.
ruclips.net/video/KZVHOFijsgE/видео.html
@@zaphod77 Lots of time has gone by since then, and the emulation has improved. Also since then I've got cards with both real OPL2 and OPL3 chips. SB16, the ones with a real OPL3, would make no difference from an SB PRO 2, which has the same chip. And I can tell you that it doesn't target an SB16 simply by the fact that it only uses OPL2 commands (and addresses music as "AdLib" in the settings.)
All that being said, it's probably time for me to re-record all my old stuff using authentic hardware.
@@dosnostalgic no, some instruments sound an octave higher on an sb16 and later. minds eye uses one of them. again, check supaplex. some of its' notes are an octave higher on the sb16. And at the time of release, most people had an sb 16 or awe 32. so the other video i linked is what they heard.
That said, i did check out the mt 32 version, and it also has this same instrument low. but the higher pitch more matches the jaguar original. and the mt32 instrument has some hihg harmonics that the adlib oe does not.
Can you re-upload the download link? It appears to be dead.
It's working just fine. It's just a weird way YT handles links. But try this one dosnostalgia.com/files/tempest2k_ost.zip
The ost needed some base, the entire thing is too tinny.
its a lot less tinny on a creative card with CQM.
